Welcome back to another deep dive. You know, you probably passed by, well, dozens of schools a week without ever really thinking about the invisible army required to keep them running. Oh, for sure. It's totally behind the scenes. Right. So today, our mission is unpacking this massive job alert from one of the largest employers in their region. The London District Catholic School Board or a LDCSB? Exactly. We are looking at what it actually takes to maintain the physical spaces where education happens. And honestly, the scale of this operation is, it's pretty staggering when you look at the sources. Oh, absolutely. The numbers jump right out at you. I mean, the LDCSB employs over 4,700 people to educate roughly 28,000 students. Wow. 28,000. Yeah. And they are currently the fastest growing Catholic school board in Ontario. So that footprint is expanding rapidly, which means, you know, new positions are constantly being added to their roster.
And to keep an operation like that running, I mean, you're looking at 54 separate facilities. That's 44 elementary schools, nine secondary schools, and an adult education center. That is a massive amount of floor space to cover. Right. You realize you need a serious logistical backbone just to keep the lights on in the floor is clean. And that naturally brings us to a specific role they are actively hiring for right now. The casual custodian. And I have to say the title casual is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Oh, I totally agree. Because it's actually quite misleading when you read the fine print. Geographically, this school board's network spans middle sex, Oxford, and Elgin counties. So it's not just like isolated to one city. Not at all. You're talking about providing coverage across widely dispersed cities, you know, London, St. Thomas, Strathroid, and Woodstock. Right. So if you're looking at this posting, you have to understand the mechanism of how the job actually works. You are placed on a call out list to provide replacement coverage across that massive map.
Right. You're basically part of a rapid response team. And because the role covers such a vast geographic network to provide that coverage, having a reliable vehicle isn't just, you know, a nice perk. Oh, the daily tasks definitely prove this is anything but a relaxed gig. They really do. You're talking lifting, climbing ladders, operating heavy equipment, moving furniture and supplies, right alongside the regular sweeping and mopping. You are physically wrestling a school into a functional state, which is exactly why the compensation looks the way it does. Because the physical demands and the geographic spread are so intense, they heavily incentivize this to maintain a reliable call out list. Makes sense. Having a $24.44 an hour plus an immediate 4% vacation pay. It reflects the reality that they need dedicated people who can handle that strain. But money is only one part of the equation here, right? Right. The HR materials outline an incredibly strict vetting process. Applicants can't just, you know, submit a resume and a few character references.
What did I ask for? The board demands three supervisory references. No personal references, no friends, no family, and not even co-workers allowed. Wow. Yeah. And one of them must be your current supervisor. They are operating in a vulnerable sector, constantly surrounded by children and teenagers. That environment dictates the entire hiring mechanism. Ah, I see. It's why an original police record check, specifically a vulnerable sector check dated within the last six months, is an absolute mandatory condition of employment before an offer is even considered. It's pure risk mitigation. Exactly. The LDCSB is actively ensuring an inclusive, secure, and, ah, transparently hired workforce because the stakes are as high as they get. And that ties right back to the core mandate, doesn't it? It really does. The sources state their goal is to provide an educational atmosphere that fosters the spiritual, intellectual, physical, and social growth of their students, helping them live as responsible Catholics. And again, with the constant growth there, seeing check the LDCSB website
for the latest employment opportunities as they pop up. For sure.
