The 47-year-old actor played John Roland, the young gardener having an affair with Eva Longoria's Gabrielle Solis. The show's creator, Marc Cherry, explained it was a series about housewives, not gardeners, so Metcalf wouldn't stay a series regular. Instead, his character popped up now and then in later episodes. Metcalf took it in stride at the time. He had landed the lead in the movie, John Tucker must die from 20th Century Fox, so he felt ready to chase movie stardom. The Desperate Housewives' breakout gave him huge momentum with offers rolling in.
