John Paul Jones arena as a 14 and a half point underdog and Virginia has a clear cut path to the two seed in the ACC tournament and a a potential rematch with Duke and And and and the championship game of that ACC tournament God willing a lot We're gonna talk about including football news and notes and a Transition to a subscriber business model for Jerry raccliffe due to wick cower is behind the camera Judith you can go to the studio camera and then welcome hoody raccliffe to the program on a two shot That would mean the absolute world to us The show is yours Jerry raccliffe good Tuesday morning my friend Good to see you again as always appreciate it always look forward to our show and getting together with you and Judah It's like hanging out with friends at a bar just sitting around talking sports right a hundred percent my friend one of the highlights of the week I absolutely love friends out there. I absolutely loved doing the show

Significant news that I think Wahoo fans have already seen but here's an opportunity to do for you to highlight it in front of a lot of people Jerry raccliffe Transitioning to a subscriber model at Jerry raccliffe calm my friend the program is yours Well, you know it for we've been doing this for about eight years at Jerry raccliffe calm after I left the newspaper business and Which is a dying industry for sure? Can't believe it's still alive actually and and So we tried to we tried and tried and tried to make it work as a free website So everybody could read it That that was my main desire and Depending solely on advertising to exist and in today's climate business climate

I just found it near impossible to Continued to have consistent Advertising month after month after month. It's just Too inconsistent a way to try to make it and For just a variety of reasons and decided to try to go in another direction and Just about everybody that I know of including newspapers and most of the other Websites that cover college and pro sports have gone to Behind a paywall and it's a subscriber-based business and We decided to give that a try and see if it works better So we can bring better coverage to people by Just a better financial existence and so that's where we are right now. We just started six days ago

Thanks to your help and Judas help and 245 subscribers already. Yeah, so we We're I think it's a very encouraging start and we want to build on that and We were asking you humbly to join us and and Subscribe to our project Jerry Rackliff dot com head over to Jerry Rackliff dot com Transition from Jerry Rackliff dot com and become a subscriber He's producing content that you can find nowhere else There's 245 people who have subscribed and the first six days upon launching this business model Some examples he had a podcast that he did with Craig little page that Depicted or showcased the behind the scenes of what led to Tony Bennett being hired at the University of Virginia That's content that cannot be found anywhere else. He's got commentary. He's got analysis He's got the recruit the transfer portal. He's got notebooks

He's got Wahoo's where they now This is the type of content that does not exist anywhere else Except inside the brain of a Virginia sports hall of famer who's been on the beat for 50 plus years Jerry Rackliff dot com and the subscriber bottle folks transition over there and subscribe to the man's business It's absolutely worth your dollar now a lot to cover on the program including a loss to the Duke Blue Devils We'll cover awake for us. We'll cover inside the Atlantic coast conference Virginia's in the driver's seat to finish in the two seat in the regular season Which we'll put Virginia opposite Duke in the ACC tournament. Let's first talk about the Devils What happened in Cameron on national television on Saturday at high noon? It was certainly a blowout hoody well a few things and and we talked about this in last week's show First of all, you got to give credit to Duke because They had I thought a really good game plan and

Using their athletic and length lengthy guards to run out to the three-point line and harass Virginia shooters Which they did a good job of and I Think I said a few weeks ago, Jerry. I think this team will go as far as the three point shots will take them I know Ryan edible probably Disagree with that and say it's more about defense, but still I still think this team Gonna have to A lot of their success is gonna have to come from being able to light it up from the perimeter and the They were They were atrocious at that the other day and the and the reason that's important is because When they're not making shots that takes away the effectiveness of DeRitter inside he doesn't have room to operate they can double-team him

Virginia's five guards against Duke were six of 32 shooting six 32 and four of 24 from the three point line And when that happens it's gonna be hard to beat anybody let alone Duke on their home floor Renee pedifers watching the program Renee We're gonna get to your comments about Tony Bennett and the contract the job the The new opportunity for for coach Bennett and Tinseltown with the Los Angeles Lakers Jeremy Wilson is watching an eastern Tennessee Six different states as of now watching the Jerry and Jerry show mr. Wilson says exactly what Jerry Rackliffe just said Seven of 35 from beyond the arc That was the difference in the game for the most part we contained boozer and DeRitter was only two points behind him But seven of 35 from bonus fear is why we lost the contest. I will highlight this you from Start to middle of the season have been emphasizing the importance of UVA with its

Bonus fear shooting. It's long ball shooting and I've said Virginia is gonna go deep in the postseason Depending on what it does from bonus fear. I am a hundred percent on board with that analysis from you When chance Mallory when Sam Lewis when jacari white with grunlo are stretching the floor The ritter has an opportunity to get to the post Finish around the rim and face less double team and extra attention They struggled from the floor against Duke What did the devils do to limit Virginia shooting from long range or was it Virginia just showed up super cold against the best team in the country. I think it was more Duke's defense It was really good and again their guards have length and their guards are very athletic and They ran Virginia either off the line or harass their shots They didn't get many easy looks and when you start missing

And the other team keep scoring then I think that puts a lot more pressure on you because you you think well, you know, I got to make this shot Or you know, we're gonna get they're gonna go down the other end and score again And so I think it magnifies the problem and We talked about this last week and I've covered I used to cover Duke in North Carolina in some of those schools Long before I came to Charlottesville And I've covered games of Duke throughout my career even in Charlottesville It's one of the toughest places to play in America and Part of it is the environment it seats 10,000 they're On top of you on top of you big time The fans are closer to the court there than anywhere particularly their students Who line up one entire side of the court

And they're vocal and they're organized and they know how to Put pressure on teams that are not performing well and If you're you get off to a slow start or if Duke it's on runs and you You fall behind and you're struggling It only intensifies the the pressure on you because You feel it you can't help the feel you're human and It's it's so difficult To come back in here. That's why they're they've won Well, there's 62 and six in the last few seasons at home. I mean Who else has a record like that and it's been going on for years. I remember Distinctively One year UCLA was one of the top teams in the country they came into Cameron I think it was Jimmy V's last game as a broadcaster because I remember

uh Walking out of the arena with him after the game and it took him um 15 minutes to walk Maybe 50 yards. He was that in that bad a condition and But the UCLA coach got thrown out of the game Because he thought if they were getting jobed and maybe they were but Uh, it's a pressure-packed environment that is like no none other than I've ever been around And I've been in a lot of arena arena in this country and If things start snowballing on you there's not much you can do so You know, it was an experience they put it behind them And as Ryan Odom said yesterday he learned a long time ago from his father Dave That a lot of times it's it's when you play a team and where you play a team

And to play Duke In late February with everything on the line It's it's tough It's tough if you play it's a different deal than playing Duke In December early December or late December and uh Maybe if you play him again on a neutral floor things are a little different Uh, or if you play him in at your home Maybe things are different but uh That's that's just something that you have to live with and forget about it learn from it And go back about your business and play in the way you were before because you were playing pretty darn good before that Well said, I mean it really viewers and listeners and Virginia basketball fans This is the only dropping that Virginia has endured this season We can make a legitimate argument. They should have beaten Virginia Tech at a legitimate argument a very legitimate argument They should have beaten North Carolina They were up double digits in the first half against the tar heels and then

Collapse in the second half Virginia Tech Yes, there were some miss shots. Yes a little flat offensively the refereeing was poor UVA should have beat Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. They'll have a chance at redemption um But this is the first drumming that UVA has endured And it happened against maybe the ACC coach of the year Certainly the ACC player of the year the ACC freshman of the year Maybe the number one draft pick in the draft the NBA draft if not the top pick a top four pick I don't know your did you leave him even more impressed with with Booser after what you saw on Saturday I certainly did. Yeah, I thought he was everything that we've been led to believe that he is I thought Virginia did a pretty good job against him overall They held him without a fuel goal in the first half although he did go the free throw line a lot Because they were they were being very physical and

But you know you mentioned Duke pounding Virginia that you know after Duke knocked off number one Michigan on a neutral floor in DC a couple of weeks ago They went to Notre Dame and pounded them 90 some points and they pounded Virginia They pounded in C state last night Duke is playing at a really high level right now, so I'm not sure that Virginia has anything to be embarrassed about I agree a hundred percent agree and it's a chance To get back in the wind column against wake force tonight 14 and a half point favorites. We'll get to that contest At this point of the season who's your ACC coach of the year? Well, I think it's going to clearly be between three people John Shire, Ryan Odom, and Jai Lucas from Miami I have a hard time voting against Odom because I know Shire and she chef's used to be sort of penalized for being good as well, but

If you have that kind of talent, you're supposed to win and And win big and You know that happens I tend to go for the guy who wasn't supposed to be there and Did a hell of a coaching job bringing a team together and putting them in contention and the what Ryan Odom has done In his first year at Virginia putting together a completely brand new roster and getting them to 25 wins I'm gonna vote for him. I just think what he's done is Remarkable and I appreciate what John Shire has done, but Again, it wasn't a surprise that he was did what he did and Lucas at Miami's done pretty much the same thing east They were atrocious last year and he's put together a new roster and

And done well, but I would have to lean toward Ryan Odom I know a lot of people want to go with Shire and he may win it, but I'd vote for Ryan Odom Diane Webster is watching the program. She just liked the show viewers and listeners Do us the favor of hammering that like button share the show like the show offer a comment on the show Subscribe to the show Logan Wells-Clayla welcome to the broadcast Vanessa Parkhill welcome to the broadcast Cindy Cindy Wickline watching the program right now if you have a question put it in the feed And we will relay it live on air to Jerry Rackliffe whose approaching is 53rd straight ACC basketball tournament ladies and gentlemen The Wake Forest even deacons are a 14 and a half point underdog right now The John Paul Jones arena is I would imagine is going to be quite lively Virginia if they get this win They're 26 and 4 overall after the win should it win should UVA win and 14 and 3 and ACC play open added question

Wake Forest UVA tonight 7 o'clock ACC network where would you like to go? Well, I think Virginia just needs to get back to playing Virginia basketball and they didn't do that Saturday for a number of reasons with and Ryan Even though we talk about the offense in the shooting Ryan was most disappointed in the rebounding and the Defense it just wasn't they were substandard to what he's become accustomed to expect I'm sure that's been a point of emphasis in practice leading up to tonight Wake Forest is a team that if you don't bring your A game They can jump up and bite you they Have an interesting offense. They run a lot of different actions They have a guy who's Probably made the biggest jump from his freshman to sophomore year Of anybody in the ACC for sure and maybe in the country

Kid named Juke Harris 6-7 sophomore guard Savage in 21 points a game He's increased his scoring average by 15 points Between last year and this year he's got 29 straight games of at least 10 points and is The the difference in his scoring last year and this year is Topps in the nation after raising his average by 15 points and he He can light it up. I mean he's a really good player and they they have a couple of other guys that are good to Miles Colvin 6-5 junior guard who scored 32 points And it went over Syracuse recently over the weekend and then Harris

Even though Wake lost at Boston College last week He scored 38 points in that loss It's the first time a Wake Forest player has scored 38 points since 2008 so Those are two guys you're gonna have to deal with and and put some slap some defense on him and see what happens, but It's it's a game that You can't afford to lose and and With everything on the line for Virginia as you mentioned earlier wrapping up the two seed and getting a double buy in the ACC tournament. It's a big deal and That could lock it up tonight if they be Wake Forest as they're supposed to Southy Bagwell's giving you some props southy Southy says great job is always hoody great job is always Jerry He's a long-time

Twitter follower and we appreciate his support for sure it may always makes good observations So you know Steve Forbes was very complimentary of Ryan Odom last night talking about what a great job he did in constructing this roster and He thinks that Virginia is It is one of the better teams in the country. I mean we'll weigh the NC State head coach city call UVA final 14 He said they could be in the final four. I know. I don't know if I would go that far because Virginia hasn't proven at this point that they Can beat an elite team they and they haven't had many shots Yeah playing a You'd say they've had One shot pretty much it's to do right. Yeah, I mean, I don't call do we call North Carolina elite?

I don't think they're elite this year. I don't think they're elite this year either good team, but yeah, it's about it Yeah, I don't I don't think Miami's elite. No Louisville wasn't a Texas Louisville not elite Miami Florida State not elite. Yeah, all really good team. Yeah But they haven't played any of the powerhouses that are Above them in the ranking right so Right now. I'm thinking sweet 16 for this team, but They've got a they've got some things to prove One of my favorite parts of the basketball tournament my wife and I talk about this. She's a die hard Yukon fan. She went to She's a Yukon Husky grad and and An a tournament setting anything can happen because it's not a series Best of seven best of five whatever it is. You just have to win one game right you can get hot And in college basketball crazy things happen. Well, we've seen crazy things happen with this program over the years 100% 100% If Virginia gets hot

If the jacquari white gets hot Sam Lewis gets hot chance Mallory gets hot This team could be really really really good and we're talking about the three-pointer again Well three-pointer again, and you've been on point about this for weeks If this team gets cold This team can struggle to score. Well, yeah, that's what happened in some recent years when they lost to people like Ohio and Furman And people that they weren't supposed to lose to because they couldn't couldn't score Right, and the the the recipe is extremely obvious here The the defensive scouting report is obvious is do not let the ridder beat you in the post Yeah, make them shoot the long ball and I think these are the top of every scouting report 100% and I think the The film the tape is without question out after the due game So defense is opposing coaches opposing programs. We'll see what happened

Now most teams don't have the the kind of guard play that Duke has and can play that kind of intense defense So They're limited and and what they can do they can still attempt to do that and I hope that Virginia's having a bad night, but I Virginia won't face that kind of defense again until You know somewhere in the ACC term uh Jamie Morris is watching the program on Twitter on your Twitter feed He says this is a fantastic show. I toggled over to Jamie Morris's Twitter profile and and the description of him I absolutely love Jamie Morris. It says God Family Friends Ryan Odom in the Wahoo's the Cowboys the Yankees and hunting Um, I'm not a Cowboys fan nor my Yankees fan. I don't hunt much either But God family friends and Ryan Odom in the Wahoo's early in the description with a Virginia V savers logo

And it looks like his son on the on the pitching mound in a high school baseball uniform That's all right by me Jamie Morris and we appreciate you watching the show. Absolutely Wake Forest And then the regular season the regular season is on the very near Closure here Virginia Is got a deac's team that it shouldn't I mean I'll cut to the chase it should cruise through Then it's got a A regular season outing against everyone knows who Um and a rematch that I think everyone knows is going to be Quite a bit on the line With a lot of bitterness in its mouth Unfortunately, that's a 12 o'clock tip off on Saturday On your favorite work on the worst network of all time the CW network Um What do you make a wake force in Virginia Tech to close? I think Virginia should sweep me too

I like I like both the coaches. I like Steve Forbes and I like my young. They're both really good people really good coaches they're having Difficult years particularly at wake. They're barely over 500 um Virginia Tech is Bubblicious right now. They're they're trying to fight their way Onto the end to the tournament. I don't I don't know if they're going to make it or not but Certainly a win over Virginia would would help them if they're If they're right there on that cut line uh So they'll come in here with a fury and knowing that they Have beaten these guys before And even though it took a couple of over times to do it but They they'll come in here with their hair on fire. I would imagine and so it won't be an easy afternoon for Virginia Virginia's got to bring a tag game to To put that one away

Then the ACC tournament put in perspective the ACC tournament what it means to you And where it stacks up was one of the best sporting events that are out there. Well it used to be As you know it for years until The tournament started expanding and everything used to be only the champion Didn't matter where you finished in the regular season If you didn't win the ACC tournament you didn't go to the NCAA tournament And there was so much pressure On every coach and every game because You know at that point there was only seven or eight teams in the league and so anybody thought Hey, all we got it is stringed together three games and we're in the NCAA tournament Uh Virginia 1976 is the best example of that knocking off three ranked teams and three nights uh, there Some of those guys are going to be getting together

This weekend, I think to celebrate that championship, but um It used to be I mean you think it's pressure now. It was multiply that by 100 There were so many great teams that got left out of the NCAA tournament because they couldn't win the ACC tournament championship, so Used to be so much drama and so much pressure And so much on the line it's been watered down over the years by expansion and Um Of the conference and then expansion of the NCAA field So it's nothing like it used to be it's still fun and I think this year It'll be more fun because there's the league is better and there'll be more interesting games and the past few years just seems like A lot of people were just going through the motions because you for the most part you knew it was going to be Duke or Carolina in the end Uh, sometimes Virginia was able to sneak in there and then we had a

We had one of those freaky moments with the NC State a couple of years ago Uh, that push them to the what the final four, right? Yeah, they got made it all the way the final four But uh make me an argument that Duke is not the slam dog favorite to win Well, um It's kind of hard to do that because they're going to be playing in Charlotte There's going to be tons of Duke fans there for every game It's uh They don't have to travel very far they're Going to be in familiar territory. They're going to be having tons of sport Uh, it will be somewhat of a neutral floor not totally um But uh, they've they've had some of their struggles and And instances like that before so There are enough good teams in this league if they get hot

Uh They could they could be Duke on a neutral court even though it's really not that neutral It's more neutral than Cameron for sure um I mean Virginia into excuse me uh Of Florida State if they would get hot Miami if they would get hot Uh Carolina who's seen what you know they they beat Duke earlier though So um and they'll have a lot of fans in Charlotte as well, but uh It's not a foregone conclusion that Duke won it although It's improbable That somebody will beat him Because they're playing really good bad. We're playing phenomenal But they they I've watched a lot of Duke of lane and I can have a bad game 100% 100% agree with that 100% agree with that Savannah Bowen. Thank you for sharing the show Uh, we appreciate you Renee Pettiford especially loves the CW the only thing I think we've ever disagreed on Renee Pettiford

CW still love you Renee Pettiford although I've never met you. I feel like I know you I think she's watching it. Did you say North Carolina? Sure. I think Charlotte I think she's in Durham Durham James Madison is watching in mineral Virginia William McChestney the mayor of McIntyre is watching the program viewers and listeners put your comments in the feedwell relay. I'm live on air. I've watched a lot of Duke of late Duke beat Michigan Booser was in foul trouble and he still Essentially finished with darn near close to a triple double. Yeah Um, I think he did have a triple double. David triple double Um He does so many things well. I was impressed and the UVA matchup It was clear Virginia's strategy was to be extremely physical with Booser Because they had a UGO they have UGO they have Grunlow they have Derritor they have big Tilles. Yeah Tilles matched up They have four big guys that they could throw at Booser and that's

20 fouls And they were prepared to use them. Yeah. Booser goes to the free throw line shoots the free the free throw extremely well Punishes UVA is like you want to be physical with me. Okay. Your your guys are Derritor's gonna get in foul trouble And I'm gonna shoot darn near close to a hundred percent from the strike. Yeah He starts the fast break with a bunch of outlet passes He's a fantastic distributor of the basketball especially when the in the post when he gets double team He can step behind a three-point line and shoot it. I mean the kid just you can drive it He can drive it. I mean he's he's so fluid in such a three-level scorer and he plays defense and He got hit in the eye I thought for a second like that's a serious eye injury Goes talks with the trainer clearly. I was swelling. Yeah, they showed it you can see the lid was swelling Gets up three or four minutes later Says put me back in the game

Good job. I was just like this guy is is it only tough? Yeah, I mean you're looking at the The national player of the year for a second consecutive year from Duke both freshmen. Yeah, that's wild Yeah, years ago you would have never seen something like that. Yeah from the same school both freshmen. Yeah National player of the year. I don't know if that's ever happened. I don't think that has ever happened I don't know to my memory Yeah, and and to who these point it's going to take a lot for Duke not to win the ACC basketball tournament, but the beautiful thing about Autornament is anyone can get red hot. I got this question for you How wide is the gap between Virginia basketball and the top 10 teams in the country? It's pretty wide between Virginia and Duke But not not everybody has the personnel that Duke has but I'd say

There's definitely a gap definitely a chasm there and I don't know the personnel that well of all the top 10 teams, but um You know, Virginia's not that far off, but there's definitely a gap there and uh I'd think A lot of those people have some one and done's on the rosters I don't know the Virginia necessarily has that um So it's it's hard to put a label or a number on it, but there's definitely a gap in there and I think part of it is Virginia's probably going to have to play Teams like that to advance their program and used to be you could do it within your own conference, but the rest of the conference hasn't

Called up to that at this point the conference is better, but it's not you know, you're not facing a top 10 team Or even a top 15 team very often, so Some of these people have advantages of playing Teams of that the oak On a more regular basis and testing themselves and pushing themselves to a different level so It's uh I don't know exactly what it's going to take for them to get there, but Uh Considering where Virginia is in you know in only one year Uh, I would think that they can make some strides in this day of NIO Um to close that gap Comments coming in quickly uh, this one is from Mark Brown. He says Virginia seems to have big big problems with big athletic guards

Florida state showed that Duke showed that yeah Duke also shot the ball well if Duke shoots like that they are unbeatable Duke gets a team of five stars and it showed against us Oh, yeah, no question. How about the comment about the big athletic guard Yeah, and he made a very good point and we we pointed that out that that was one of the big problems was The way they were able to use that to their advantage defensively and uh Yeah, Virginia's guards are good, but they're not the most athletic guards in the world And uh, they're not they don't have the most length they have more length than than some teams, but not uh not that Kind that that Duke has so uh, but that's uh certainly something that Is correct and and and we talked about that earlier in the show that

They used that length and athleticism to bother Virginia's guards who were a little bit slower and not quite as big and Not quite as athletic So If they run into teams like that they're They can struggle who's Virginia's best perimeter defender. Is it Hall? Probably Hall. Yeah. Yeah. I think Hall's Virginia's best perimeter defenders, but now he's pretty good too Does Mallory get overpower size-wise? Uh Sometimes not very often because he I think he uses his Uh, ability to get low or leverage to yeah to be able to take some things away from other guards He gets into him and doesn't give him as much room to operate is they would like and uh But I think Hall overall is is that guy Um eastern Tennessee's Jeremy Wilson um, how is the basketball recruiting shaking out for next year or is this strictly a portal reliance every year

This is a question I have as a follow-up to that. Yeah I've I mean they bring guys in but Um, they have they don't have any commitments for next year Certainly things will they ensign anybody in the early signing period in November. They lose Hall Exhausted eligibility. Yeah Tillus tillus I think is gone The Ritter's got one Thomas is gone. Yep Deritter's got one left. I would think as of now Deritter comes back. Hugo was gone. You goes gone. Yeah How that may be it. Yep, that's it. That's it um chance Is back we hope I would think he would be I would think so yeah Sam Lewis we hope I think he'll be back Deritter and grunt and grunlo jacari jacari has another year right jacari have another I think he does

viewers and listeners let us know that um How do you remake the team is it through portal that's got to happen now. I think so yeah, I think that's The way to go now because you can get guys that you don't have to Develop they already know what college basketball is all about Most of them have proven themselves on at least the mid-major level and um Some of them on a high-major level so You've got the money. Why not spend it and um, I think that's the way to go now because most feet. That's what most schools are doing Uh, if you can get a couple players to compliment your roster out of the high school ranks and Bring them along you might find somebody that can contribute immediately, but The chances of that are soon to be narrowing and But I think the portal is the way to go

Lord and ivy helping us out here This is jacari whites last year. Okay. I was thinking he might have another year. Um, so you're looking chance Sam Lewis The ridder Who's got one year left grun low grun low I think that's it lies a Gertrude Yeah, limited time for Gertrude this year. Yeah, limited time and uh Barxdale who was red shirted this year. That's right committed to vcu followed odum to uva Barxdale's got upside, right Um, but they're gonna have to re-imagine this roster here um How about this question that's coming. This is from uh From Georgia Can you ask jerry raccliffe? What do you think of some of the other teams in the Atlanta coast conference and whether they can make a deep run in the NCAA tournament We're big north carolina tar hill fans in our house. What's he think of the tar hills chances?

Uh, I think as long as they can get healthy and stay healthy. They have a good chance to make a run I think uh Miami has a chance to do that Virginia Obviously, I think has a chance to do that Florida state Could possibly um, I don't know about Louisville There's been kind of disappointing of late I thought when they got browning that they were gonna become harder to be but they they've uh Kind of taking a step back um I think SMU is a team that could win a game or two I Cal if they continue to play well Is sneaky good I think that's about it, but um I think a lot of it once you get into the tournament it it's all about

matchups and you know who's in your bracket and who gets upset in front of you that you might uh You might Think you're gonna play a really good team that gets knocked off and all of a sudden you're playing somebody that That you're better than and you can take advantage of that so uh And uh, you know again a lot of it's If our coach can get his team to get hot at the right time and peak at the right time um Like NC State did a couple of years ago. I mean they were dead in the water and Uh still if Tony Bennett had called that That one time out and that late in that game That was finished state right there In the in the TOR ACC tournament and instead They pull off the upset and and make it all the way to the final four so uh

If you get hot And it's inexplicable you sometimes you just don't even see it coming but Teams can get hot and make a deep run That uh that catches everybody off guard Renee Pettifer is uh eager to chat about Tony Bennett and his she's always eager to talk about Tony Bennett Los Angeles Lakers new job. Renee we we love when you watch the program You're one of our favorite fans here at the Jerry and Jerry show um What do you make of the Tony Bennett news? What do you make of uh She she's wondering does this have does this mean he moves to LA does this mean um You know he's spending more time in the NBA folks are asking does this set him up for a job in the NBA I mean this Called a lot of people off guard and and and and wahoo wahoo country. Yeah. Oh, you know, yeah, he's still a young guy and I'm glad to see him getting back into Into basketball

because I mean he's he has a great basketball mind and He loves the game obviously I think he's going to help the Lakers front office a lot and because they're In terms of scouting and in terms of the draft process because While they've done really well in free agency Their draft in recent years has not brought impact players in who can Uh, really make a difference over a consistent period of time. So I think that's something that they feel like that they can do better Uh with and and having somebody of Tony's expertise Tony uh It's was interesting watching him over the years recruit because He had an uncanny knack for um Spotting guys that that other people would ignore

And uh, there should be there would be something about that person that That caught Tony's eye and he felt Confident that they could be successful in his system for example Uh, I think uh one almost key hay Clark 100 percent nobody wanted key hay Clark. Yeah Five foot eight point car. Yeah Malcolm Brockton was not a highly recruited guy Out of Atlanta when Virginia plucked him Uh tied your own was a young guy that some people weren't sold on early Um There's there's been others I think maybe parantes was one Uh, I'd I'd have to go back and look through the roster through the years, but Uh, he he has a good eye for talent and I think uh I think he can help the Lakers in that regard uh, whether that could eventually lead to a

Coaching job. I don't know. I don't know if Tony wants to get back into the coaching or not I don't think he'll be leaving and moving to Los Angeles. I don't I don't think Tony is a LA kind of guy Uh, but uh With today's technology with zoom and and and all that I think like he may have to go to LA You ever now and then for meetings or conferences or something, but I don't think this job would require him to to move To La La land. I think this is uh an example of a guy who just loves basketball. Yeah, he does Doesn't need the money. I'll be it. I bet you the money is extremely nice here Um, yeah, and he's making a lot of money doing it and as he should be Is one of the best basketball minds and in in in the world and he should be compensated for that IQ and that intellect But I think this really comes down to Tony Bennett missing the game of basketball Yeah, I mean it didn't make sense for him Just uh

Going to retirement at his age and and not do anything except play tennis and golf exactly It just and it doesn't make sense for him to land a job at another college program. No Because he's a Virginia guy, but I need to be facing the same problems he faced here exactly So the MBA turned him off right the MBA makes sense Boatload of our folks are watering if this is the platform for a head coaching gig Who knows I mean He could he could he could definitely be an NBA coach. There's no question about it um I don't know His thoughts on that as to whether he would want to do that Uh, or if he would just like to play uh A lesser role in doing what he's been hired to do with the Lakers, but um

I mean he could he could move into the front office he could become an assistant general manager or a general manager or uh You know director of scouting or personnel I don't know if he would want all that on his table or not Um, I don't know if he wants to jump back into the rigors of coaching and NBA team because It's it's not just the pressure of coaching and and and trying to win There's a lot of travel involved in the NBA. I mean you're on the road so much I just don't know if that would be his cup of tea at this point in his life Yeah, I totally agree with you. I think it's a guy that just missed basketball and here's yeah Here's a dose to basketball for him to kind of give him that dopamine Uh, that comes with the sport that it's been his entire life And can't think of a better franchise to do it within the Lakers

And and you got a superstar and Luca Donnich. You could build around you got yeah Money, I mean you got notoriety. I mean you got prestige and history and legacy you might as well do with the Lakers, right? It's either the Lakers of the Celtics Yeah, if you're gonna do it if you're Tony Bennett Uh, Anthony Esposito loves the program viewers and listeners are just giving props left and right um On on on on the broadcast here a lot of people want football want you to feed the football itch for them the football addiction Yeah, you be a football hoodie. Yeah, they're on the verge of starting spring practice We'll be meeting With the coaches and players as we go along Um, I think they've already set their spring game for around mid-April Um Had the opportunity last week of talking to a couple of the

New players from the transfer portal uh uspent uh some time with uh with Uh Lewis the running back from Tennessee Who um Tennessee beauty him as their next all SEC running back and uh He's from Salem, Virginia. He's a speedster. He has two years of eligibility remaining uh he was One of several talented running backs that the balls had in their system and uh We talked to him at length. I'll be doing a a big story on him in the coming days Uh a lot of Virginia fans were really excited when he decided to To come to Virginia that Tony Elliott made a run at him uh

back when Lewis was uh Uh, senior at Salem high school down in Toronto Uh, and he had he was quoted by just about every SEC program in that there is he was uh ranked the number four running back in the nation by one of the recruiting services. So this guy's for real and not only is he has a nice physique uh, but he's fastest lightning and uh that's kind of guy that could help take Virginia's running game to maybe another level um uh talking to Tony a couple of weeks ago he was mentioning then that he understood why Lewis would have turned them down and gone to Tennessee because at that point Virginia's program wasn't where Tony wanted it to be and had envisioned it to be

and At the point where he could attract guys like Lewis out of high school but now it is um now that they've won eleven games they won the ACC regular season they played in Gator Bowl, won the Gator Bowl and um Lewis is hoping that some of the other and it did happen a couple other guys that what elsewhere from the state of Virginia and now we're coming back home to play for Virginia so um I think that people will really love hearing his story that we'll be telling on the website uh in the coming days um Cherry Rackliff guys, jerryrackliff.com, jerryrackliff and jerryrackliff.com what else is in the hopper? who do you rackliff? I'm going to be doing a blowout on chance Mallory uh week of the ACC tournament

some stuff about him that you don't know and probably would never know um but uh that will be following the the team obviously um starting to wiggle into spring football a little bit as we said covering the we'll be having the coverage of the men and the women's basketball teams and all the spring sports and uh some interesting podcasts I had so um pretty much anything you want as a wife. jerryrackliff and Jeff Jones on the J&J show have Ryan Odom's wife that's this week. loose you on the J&J show. yes he's uh he's a wonderful lady uh i don't know her well uh but um it's going to be great uh hearing her thoughts on her husband and being a coach's wife and uh all the inner workings of that i

i remember uh early in my career here in trellisville uh i thought it would be kind of a neat story to uh find out what it's like being a coach's wife and i interviewed i remember interviewing Anne Hollen and Sandra Welsh at the time and uh getting their perspectives and it was very eye-opening uh story i thought and um i think lucio it's probably a little easier on coaches' wives now because i don't think they have to sit in the crowd if they don't want to or if they do they can sit right behind their husband on our nearby. well i'm not sure where she she sits but Sandra used to have to sit into the stands and she couldn't stand some of the Virginia fans because uh they they weren't into it like she was and she asked for her in her family to be moved to that uh outdoor area of Brian Hall uh it was like a

picnic patio so she could make all the noise she wanted to. i mean you think about it if you're Ryan Odom's better half everywhere this man's gone he's won you may want to sit in the crowd. well that's true. i mean he's got a six hundred and what a six fifty three win percentage uh Ryan O and and to put in perspective what it's like being a coach's wife. he's a grad assistant probably not married then but grad assistant in south florida from 96 to 97. he's an assistant at firmman from 97 to 99. he's an assistant at UNC Asheville from 99 to 2000 and assistant at american from 2000 to 2003. an assistant under Greenberg at Virginia Tech for a lot of years 2003 to 2010. an assistant associate had coach at charlotte from 2010 to 2015 interim had coach at charlotte then it goes to Leonard Ryan where he's the head coach for a year. um bc from 2016 to 2021. you tall state from 2021 to 2023. vcu from 23 to

25 and now in charlotteville. maria coach and see the world. you're talking about nomadic right there. i mean that's the life of most coaches. life of most coaches indeed hooting um that podcast is going to be something you don't want to miss. jerry raccliffe jerryraccliffe.com we encourage you the viewer and listener to subscribe to the new business model jerryraccliffe.com where you're going to get content that no one else is producing folks. jerry hoody raccliffe is 53rd ACC tournament on the horizon. support the content because the content is the best of the best. jerry raccliffe and judo wicca. my name is jerry miller. thank you kindly for joining us on the jerry jerry show. so long everybody.
