Who do we have on the show that said Michigan was the best team in the country? Tim Brando. Tim Brando. Yeah, and I disagreed with him. I said Duke and Florida. We're on a collision course, but now Duke has two significant injuries. Michigan has a significant injury at a point card as well. But yeah, we'll see. At this point, you're vindicated because they were the 1-1 overall. Yeah, I mean, I don't know. I mean, I based it on a lot of it on head-to-head when they played each other head-to-head and Duke won. Yeah, yeah. But it's going to be, you know, the tournaments is going to be crazy. It's going to be awesome. Are you pulling for anybody?

3:06Pulling for Howard. I don't know. Someone Howard to win the UMBC game, just so they do play Michigan. Yeah, people should understand that's because we have at the high school with two of the coaches there, with the head coach. Of course, can you Blake me and Rod Blombs? Who am I rooting for? Kind of depends on who I get in my pools. I'm most intrigued. I mean, I'm such an NBA guy and with the Wizards potentially having a topic. I'm most intrigued by watching how Darren Peterson performs for Kansas. There are four seed, DeBanza, DeBanza. You don't want to see the top guys. BYU. The top five or six guys. Did the Wizards be able to potentially get? Boos are obviously with Duke. Yeah. And then you were hyping up the kid from Arkansas, who's a stud. Oh, he's awesome. Yeah, I like to see them do well. I saw one of the guys. I don't even recognize some of these guys on ESPN anymore. Be honest with you. Saying he thought there was going to be more upsets, but not as many like Cinderella, sweet 16 team.

4:06You know, like a one one in Dunners, you know, that that's a scenario you could see. A lot of first round upsets, but not something that necessarily continues, you know, when you have, you know, a Cornell like 2010 in the sweet 16 or a bigger, bigger upset than that. Well, yeah. I mean, now you've had teams like VCU make the final four. George Mace make the final four. Right. You'll get runs. I think I think you'll get a team with a run. It's going to be interesting to see. Sure. You'll have one. The ones and twos, because the ones and twos for just, you know, so dominant for most of the year. Especially the ones in terms of overall record. But like I said, I mean, Duke have in significant injuries and then Michigan without the point guard. And you kind of saw how that affected him yesterday against Purdue. Braden Smith is just, I mean, he's awesome. But it's certainly effective. Which of these top teams has kind of like the most returning guys?

5:06Like it's not just a one year. Purdue's got a lot of guys back. They got a lot of guys that have been there two, three years in a program. Yeah, Braden Smith and lawyer and all those guys. Uh-huh. Well, that's more in the washroom. Florida's got some guys who've been there a few years. Yeah, what's his name, Condon? Yeah, Arizona. They've got a lot of freshmen. I mean, Duke's got all five new starters. I mean, especially if Foster's not there. Yeah, I mean, that might be teams. I mean, Houston's got a stud freshman point guard. We already talked about about a cuff. No, Florida's got a couple returns. Because I remember I was States got some transfers. The their leading score is Thomas Hough. Yep. He's been there for a while. And Alex Condon's been there for a while. Yeah, I mean, they've got they've lost some guards from last year, but Condon's junior. They're they're just really, really good. But they just ran into a hot Vandy team. Vandy couldn't miss when they played Vandy. Bogey Fland, a transfer.

6:07He was at he was with I think he was with Arkansas. Under coach Cal, but then he transferred to Florida. So he's new. But yeah, they got some new guards. But they're the big guys are their best friends too. It does kind of sting that there's not a lot of local representation from the area schools. Now you've got Howard. You've got you have got you have got you have got UMBC, which isn't really local. Okay, Howard, okay. That's great. But I mean, one of them is going to get knocked out. Then one is going to be cannon fodder for a one seed. Correct. Correct. I feel like UMBC's local. I mean, that's like their BWI airport. Like right there. Yeah, I can see that local. Local ish. I mean, VCU's in. Well, I've heard enrichment. Okay, you can you can love them in. I get what you say. You're talking about George Tal G. W Mason, Maryland. Yes, no, I understand that was bad year for them. Really bad. I mean, they didn't even have winning records. Maryland was watching. I know there wasn't even close to a postseason sweat. How many people Georgetown made the semis of the Big East?

7:09But then predictably got waxed. Made it interesting. How many people are gonna be using chat G.B.T. and then to fill out these brackets now? No idea. And how successful will it be? You think that Dome AI knows how to pick a bracket? That's the most depressing thing I've ever heard of. I was watching you do it. I was watching your mock draft over and over. Yeah, for sure they're gonna do it. If you see commercials and maybe this is only on. If you see commercials for prop G.P.T. No, there's an app out there that swears. It's gonna help you get your correct props right So why wouldn't you see maybe on the NBA channel or something? Of course, I would use that and so You know you you go to prop GPT and you get an edge people are using AI to pick stocks I mean, they're gonna they're gonna be and you're definitely using AI to help make predictions on games May I understand Valdez you like to joy of picking your own Bracket taking your sharpie out and crossing off stuff in your own bracket. I mean, yeah, but honestly, there's nothing more American than that

8:12I could get it, but this is if let's say you fill out your own bracket So you have that personal identification and then if you want to win you put it in your AI Try to you want to win money That's the American way. Yeah, yeah, there's You know the last few are always You know bad in different ways equally bad in different ways So it's just what is this committee going to like it helped this year. I think That we we're now more familiar with how important wind above bubble is as a metric when it comes to selections Um, the committee's been pretty Open about that since they added it to the Team sheet last year the wobb yep, wobb and So you know that that makes it easier. There's just some teams that you might otherwise look good But you see that they're they're 50 and wind above bubble and that's just not going to get you in that that's like an eliminated So we mentioned we had Tim Brando on the show last week and he Is a believer in Michigan being the best team in college basketball. 10:16Um That the thing about Michigan is they're not just good at every position. They're a matchup problem I mean the guy like yackelberg is Yeah, he's like a six nine guard type except for you Well, you can play anywhere on the floor. It does play anywhere on the floor Um, the last night when they were playing Purdue They were throwing in a braiden's myth to try and throw off their offense and it gave them problems because he's a foot taller than braiden almost so um And uh, yeah, he's just he's a unique guy, but they're you know, Mara's good. They're guards are good They're just good at every position and they're kind of a matchup problem. So Um, I like Michigan. I would say this though, but you're a Purdue guy. Yeah, all right. Kason's injury. I think is a factor I think foster's injuries a factor as well and Duke okay, but you saw the problems they had with a really good point guard yesterday Yeah, it's yeah, no question. Um, I might not be as high on Michigan if Duke was a hundred percent right um, but I

11:17I still I might pick Michigan anyway, but Um, I feel better about it with Duke not being a hundred percent. In fact, Duke might not make the final four, you know, it's It's just that's an important guy. Oh, yeah. What are you hearing on those two and and Michigan states in their region? So It's uh, and so are you kind of in our region too? Gashikansas man. What a region that is yeah, they're strong What are you what are you hearing on the Duke injuries going so I haven't heard anything about it. So it's not looking good I'm thinking yeah, I'm going to be surprised if we see him the first weekend anyway And then after that, you know, they could get Kansas and Kansas Kansas for me is kind of a sleeper because um You know when they have Peterson healthy, they're different. Yeah, you know When when they haven't had him healthy, then that's one thing, but when he's healthy You know, they're one of the best teams in the country and you know, the problem of course is That you know his that you've been more consistently healthy. Wait. We but it's just been a problem for them this year

12:22They're a foresteed because they couldn't keep them healthy Hey, Jerry. Were you surprised that produce run through the tournament after they dropped four their last six in the regular season and how do you think they fare as a two seed in the tournament? Um No, I can't say with pride that they've always had that in them and it's a It's a team with a lot of grit. So I had a lot of pride and most teams have a lot of pride But yeah, they were You know, Michigan I thought was a kind of a mismatch form all the other games I thought they were perfectly capable of doing what they did But they really played well against Michigan too. Yeah So Acuff was unbelievable yesterday. He was incredible all year really Yeah, he's very he's very quiet on the court. You can tell he's just he's got a motor He sees the floor so well. He can score from you know, he gets in the lane. He sees guys is a great passer Um, I don't know how great their defenses as a team that they look like they kind of have to outscore you But man, I could see them if was constant and Arkansas playing the second round that that game will be that's gonna be like an NBA game

13:29Well, yeah, I Leaving Wisconsin. I like Wisconsin a lot. They're a really good offensive team But I don't know what they do with a guy like Acuff right now I mean, and and that's not just Wisconsin. That's most of college basketball. You know, what do you do with a guy like that? He's an elite player Gonna make a lot of money starting next year but In the NBA, but yeah, he's uh, it's probably making a lot of money this year. Oh, yeah Yeah, sure he is But so here's the thing about the college basketball this year Is that there are a lot of of teams with guys like that. Yeah, you know that that are You know one and done college players going to be first round picks in the NBA at you know, Boos or Duke and um, it's uh Uh debancer um Peter sent up. Yeah, Flemmins Exactly. Yeah Caleb Wilson Caleb is gonna miss him. Unfortunately, he's out Yeah, and uh it's You know the when you got a guy like that in the NCAA tournament and things aren't going right

14:31Sometimes that guy can carry you to the next round and it's helped to have a guy like that that you can just Get on their back and write them you know to a to a game that when things aren't really quick and and uh, you know for You know teams who've got a guy like that and there's you know a lot of really good freshmen in college basketball this year You know, that's a that's a big boost Um, so you know for a team like producer pretty wasn't really had a guy like that right? He's got several guys that you can that can carry you But not on their own, right? It's it's in the team concept that they have to carry you and so you know for um But if you've got that like BYU's, you know, I mean there's Saunders is out and that's obviously changed them But debancer can carry a team now being carry him to a final four necessarily. I don't know the rest of you guys are good enough and eventually you run into somebody else like you Uh, who's a little better, but um Yeah, I think that that's a helpful thing in the NCAA tournament to have a guy like that We're joined by Jerry Palm longtime college basketball bracketology expert you can visit palm brackets dot com

15:36So Rick patino and St john's wins they win the big east Does Rick patino have another final four running him Well he might You know the problem is look at that um That region yeah do can't just and and you come again Yeah, they might not even have a sweet 16 of them It don't you think it's interesting Jerry that they're three seeds below UConn after beating them twice and winning the conference tournament Yeah, well, it's not a free game seed but yeah, I know I know Yeah, but they were pretty damn good. Yeah. Oh, yeah, they were um You know, sometimes it's just a matchup thing and uh, you know, we're saying john's is a tough matchup for UConn but You know, UConn had a better non-conference part of the season. I mean they are they're seated but they're each seated where they should be Okay, so you like St john's a five all right, so you don't like Duke coming out of the east Nobody seems to you like you kind of like can't sounds like you like Kansas if Peterson stays healthy

16:41Um, yes, okay to do although And I could see Michigan state getting through as well. Okay. I just think that region's loaded I mean Any of the top oh five easy Could win that I don't think Louisville I think we have to draw the line at Louisville But the other five could all win that region. Okay, and you like Michigan coming out of the Midwest I assume you like Arizona. Maybe you like Purdue coming out of the west. Who do you like there? You know, I've always picked Arizona um, but you know Purdue if Purdue gets there um You know, they're they're a problem. I mean Braden Smith You know running the offense is a problem, but Arizona's a problem too. I mean we talked about a great freshman. They got at least two of them Oh, um, you know, it's athleticly Arizona concerns me for Purdue um, but I don't know that they're that much different than say Michigan In terms of a matchup problem and yet they they got through the Wolverine so I You know, Purdue was preseason number one not for nothing

17:43So I wouldn't rule them out and then Florida coming out of the south What do you like Houston or maybe even I don't know Yeah, Illinois is my sleeper for that region It's Charles Barkley here with Wayfair. 19:47Is pretty pretty difficult to get ready for and short notice Because you they're hard to replicate in practice because of their size Jerry, you're sitting on your back deck. You're the lovely birds in the background Yeah, yeah, birds the birds I hear are roosters Oh nice roosters around where I am nice. I have a question for Jerry. Oh, you live on a farm Arguably nobody knows More about these teams going to the tournament for the Jerry. How do you do and in the brackets when you enter Well, you know, some years are better than others. I did really well last year You do and I did I did really well the year that pretty went to the final four so that's I get two years in a row Nice. I don't Haven't really entered too many pools, you know, like schools of friends and stuff, but um, but the you know The it's a single elimination tournament. There are a lot of bakeries involved in that it You know, she had a great team has one bad day and they're gone and everybody brackets up and smokes

20:47So and you can imagine how bitter you are the Jerry palms in your back like he's in your pool You use crumpled up throwing away immediately No, it's no, it's completely different people invite me so they can try and beat me.
