3:10list and it's great to bring him on to the show and talks a majorly baseball and we'll talk to the world baseball classic as well doing great work for our friends at the athletic just dropped an awesome article i read it this morning with each Toronto blue jason to need in following the game seven world series loss you can check it out on the athletic on twitter at jason s t jason star joins us here on a wednesday jason it's nick costos it is awesome to have you on the show my man happy baseball season to you and yours back at your neck good morning thank you so much for those time words i'll play nice i promise this whole segment you have you've always been nice i have no doubt them all let's let's see how the line of questioning goes i'm kidding i think everything's going to be awesome and i i do want to talk with you jason about this piece stood on the blue jays and like how they're recovering and how they're going to bounce back from losing game seven to the Dodgers and the world series but a couple other topics i'd like to get to before we hit on the baseball season and the first is and just from someone from the vantage point of someone who hosts a national sports radio show you know a bs is going to be something that i think is going to be

4:16a gigantic story nationally as we get a little closer to the start of the baseball season now i know in your world and for baseball fans it's something that is already a gigantic deal i actually don't think people understands like what like like how big of a story this is going to be when the baseball season actually begins for people that don't know it allows batters or pictures to challenge umpire calls you get to per game if you get them right you get to keep rolling them forward the Yankees went six for seven recently in a spring training game curious jason where you come down on this a bs players uh being able to challenge calls made by umpires people have wanted this for a long time uh Nick i'm all over this i've been watching this closely this spring and i don't know if people really have comprehended how different just those two challenges for teams are going to make the sport um first thing the strike zone is definitely smaller now do you know that some of these big tall hitters who stand straight up their zone is now four to five inches

5:22lower at the top think about that what five inches lower and it means that life's going to be very different from those hitters uh it's going to be very different for pinchers trying to figure out how they navigate the new strike zone it's going to be a whole new world for catchers because i've got a game plan differently it we're not sure yet what the value of framing is there's a lot going on there um it it's really going to be different from managers think about what managers have spent their whole lives doing like yelling at umpires every pitch and yeah i i don't know where that's going to lead us but i don't know how many umpires are going to tolerate that anymore because here's the deal if the umpire thinks you only challenge that pitch because you've got help from the dugout you can just allow it so i i have a big story running tomorrow on the athletic on manager ejections whether air and boom for example whatever be ejected again um there's

6:29a lot going on here man i i think jason the thing and i love that and it gets me really excited for it the thing that fires me up the most about this right thinking about it and conceptualizing it is the strategic element right where let's you're in a huge game towards the end of the regular season or even in a playoff game like when do you use the challenges right and the players have to make the call almost in the moment in the moment right and if you're a manager how do you navigate that like are you telling your players in the sixth inning of a playoff game like no matter what do not challenge here we can't afford losing it we need it if we get to the eighth or the ninth inning i think their strategic element is going to be something that's going to be really fascinating am i reading the situation correctly do you agree with that assessment? oh yeah and you don't think these analytic departments have been digging in on this all winter i know they have um there's there's going to be a method to the badness now i mean the i was around the mess they told me want if want to so don't want to challenge the first picture

7:30the first inning go for it these want to so do but i don't think that's going to be the way it works from virtually any other here you've got to save that challenge for the big moment hey i'll tell you i like an unattended consequence that i know this i was at a game where two out of the ninth teams winning they've got a challenge left there's a pitch that's just off the plate and so of course the catcher challenges it and think about this if he's right the game ends on that it ends on that challenge of a pitch that turned out to be quite less than half an inch off the strike zone within the margin forever of a bs and do you want 20 25 40 games ending this year on on one of those what the world series ending on a challenge i'm a huge fan of technology and using it to make the sport better i'm not sure i want that or what do you think? i i i i had to tell you i just from i i think that we as sports fans jason and baseball fans

8:36i think we all have to be consistent right because whether it's right wrong or indifference well i don't know if i want to group you into this but i'll certainly put myself on this list as i'm a big Yankee fan right if we're all going to be bitching and moaning and whining and complaining about human error and umpires missing calls then i think this is kind of like the consequence of those actions here it's like we we have a fix for it now so i certainly understand what you're saying but isn't this kind of what everyone's wanted for a long time and and and to your point now that it's here i think it's going to be really interesting to everybody to have to kind of grapple with it where hey you wanted this like the franka stands a lot you want it you got it i i think people are going to like it but you raise a really interesting points yeah i want to get the call right always i want to get the big call right always i want to correct the egregious miss call the pitch that's an inch off the plate and somehow gets called the strike like let's correct those but you understand in that there's a margin for error

9:36with a bs with the technology that's close to half an inch and so when that little animation cartoon flashes on the scoreboard and it shows you that pitch was less than one tenth of an inch off the zone because it literally shows you that are we sure that's right you know people accept an intense it's the exact same technology it's the same exact margin for error people just accept it i just something bothers me about the idea that we're going to rely on technology that isn't a hundred percent precise to make the biggest calls in the moment potentially done the game and we don't know for sure it's actually right you know think about replay we play sometimes what are the empires announced the call stands it's too close to call can you do that in a ds i think you could it's probably it's not gonna happen that would baseball once but couldn't

10:41you do that it's it it is tremendous food for thought and you're so right with the tennis analogy just like baseball and i mean this is no insult to tennis fans baseball fans are way more psychotic than and like no sport like boils my blood before the season even starts then baseball thus just as speaking as as a Yankees fan i i'm gonna say something now Jason goes thinking about this last night goes i know we're gonna have you on the show and i'm thinking about a bs and i actually came to a conclusion thinking about this that i didn't think i would come to and i think it's gonna be something that a lot of our listeners and viewers will hear and be like i can't believe he said that but i mean it is rob manford actually like an awesome commissioner because i think about all the things that have happened like on the surface i like a bs i like the pitch clock games are way quicker now i i kind of think a lot of what he's done has been really good and it feels to me like the overwhelming public sentiment has been well he sucks and most commissioners are not good i kind of think he's done really well to be clear this is not like a gotcha thing like speak badly about rob manford my opinion is i think he's really good do you think

11:46that's gonna be like it's history gonna look fondly at this guy i think all of these things have been good for the game banning the shift i think this has all been good for the game of baseball Jason yeah i know i'll let you know how history is going to look at him in a year there's no spring training we'll see how this goes i guess right yeah fair enough fair enough different conversation but yeah look we just have a fan survey run on our site on the athletic and people don't like this guy it's true but they have always looked at it is if you're in charge the stuff that happens is on your permanent record good or bad you get credit you get blamed how it and the pitch clock is the single best single most important innovation in baseball in what 20 years the game is so much more watchable so much more entertaining and love manford pushed that he made that happen and he gets big props from that you're totally right

12:46i think he's done a really no we'll see how a bs goes in a lot of you see what happens with labor and i kind of like i i hate to ask this question i really do but you know it's something that's kind of out there and maybe it's not that far down the road and i would be crushed if it happened and sports fans would be crushed if it happens yours plugged in as it gets Jason and i i hate to even talk about this but it is a story what would you say the percent chance is that there's some kind of labor stoppage in majorly baseball coming up in the next couple of years uh meeting where the sport misses games correct i mean i think it's 75% and i think uh that's that's horrible hard well i think there are people who would put it even higher neck i do um you know you look you know me and how i go about things and how i think and i'm the most optimistic positive human you'll ever meet but i'll admit something to you everybody that i talk to about this makes me more worried and more depressed um when the Yankees when house Steingrener is complaining

13:54about the Dodgers is that good is that a good sign i didn't think that good to me as a Yankee fan it it it infuriates me uh you better you bet on this Wednesday Jason Stark is out right now listen it's like hey hey how like i i i i i'll just say it'd be great if George were still around does the Yankee fan uh Jason Stark covers majorly baseball best in the business for the athletic we'll talk about the blue Jason a moment Jason has an awesome column that dropped this morning on the athletic uh on the blue Jason how they look to rebound from the uh game seven loss in the world series to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Jason i know that you've been primarily in sconston and majorly baseball but did want to ask you about the world baseball classic if you had an opinion on it because it starts today the united states first game is tomorrow and we all remember right the great two thousand twenty three final where Otani strikes out might drought to win it for japan and it feels like this is that a lot of people say this is the best american team the americans are the favorites uh do you see us a is the favorite in the world baseball classic and any opinions on the world baseball classic well i'm so stoked for this i'm

14:57not saying i'm gonna wake up at five a.m. this week to watch to you japan but in this couple of weeks are going to be so much fun i just mentioned that i can't wait to see what team lsa does it doesn't this have to be the greatest team ever assembled of american baseball players the dream team with judge and harper and wit and swarver and rolly and scooval and schemes and hey watch out for roman anthony they're all in the same field they're all in the same team that's amazing i don't know what the firepower and the star power is going to amount to it amounted to nineteen hits yesterday and i didn't get the giant so watch out for that team but i will say japan is voted and motivated that the minigame has an incredible team with wild and sodo and hulio entities and machado um i can see portolico making a run

15:58mexico korea it's just it's such great baseball but i think the u.s.a is going to win it's baseball so weird stuff happens but to me this is the most talented team i've ever seen assemble on one field i absolutely love it and i hope that we get a united state japan final i think that would be awesome yamamoto may be starting for for for japan it is would be absolutely sensational and speaking of uh speaking of yamamoto that will obviously bring us back to the world series right where he's world series MVP and the dodgers beat the blue jays in what was and maybe this is a little recency bias i kind of felt like he was one of the best world series of all time at least in my lifetime and i turned forty three later this year especially the last couple games i keep referencing the piece he wrote i read it earlier this morning on how the blue jays are looking to rebound from that you've also spent some time recently jason with my new york Yankees and i bring the obviously they play in the same division and played in the ds the blue jays winning that series uh your thoughts on those teams two of the primary challenges

16:59at least in the american league to the reigning defending two time world series champion l a dodgers yeah you know soccer has the champions leagues they still has the a.o.s it's a hard case in the case the four death teams in the sport not named the dodgers all playing in the a.o.s i think so and and in the way is that eight rockets either okay so um i do a survey every year of executives managers coaches scouts reading a display train something happened this year that's never happened the the three most improved american league teams in this voting were all in american league east and none of them were the Yankees how crazy about that and the Yankees don't feel sorry for him don't write any sympathy cards the the Steinbrenner's they're projected to win a division like start going through it um the orals they were number one

18:01alonzo ward helzley shamed eyes with a bunch of young guys on the rise who i think need that battery presence to take some of the heat off um you know the rate the rate talks are really interesting uh saw them two days ago rangers wore his son gray roasted katreras uh it's a miss Alex bredman unexpected mention of the a.o saw that guy just doing i don't know how star studded the red socks are but they're really good um and the blue jays uh i actually met him quite a bit doing sees okamoto tylo rodgers uh interesting lottery ticket in kody pumps um that's a really good team that now knows how good it is and i know like i know the Yankees ran it back again a guy named garrick cold back like all four of those teams have a chance to be monstrous can't wait to see
