Because yesterday on the show, I took a dig at Donnie about because I said he's part of the 1% that if the game was won nothing, if finished won nothing, he would come in and talk

2:06about how amazing the game still was and he still found beauty in the game. And last night, it almost ended one nothing outside of a teddy booger long shot empty netter. It was a rough go. Now look at a lot of the star powers out of the lineup for the ducks. They had a whole second. They had 120 points out of their lineup last night. No Troy Terry who is a really good player. Mason McDavish, we know how good he is, but Vancouver didn't see Leo Carlson. Leo Carlson, yeah. One of the best young talents in the National Hockey League. They had 120 points and also Vatrano was out. So look, I'll full value for the conucks for the victory, but man, that was a depleted anaheim lineup. Yeah, they've been going through it in a bad, bad way. We'll dig in more on the conucks game last night in a second. I do want to mention what's happening locally outside of the Vancouver conucks over the weekend. It's worth noting. Nothing tonight. Tonight is very quiet on the local sports scene tomorrow, though, conucks and leaves at Raj's arena. The White Caps play their second preseason game over in Spain, Rick.

3:08The White Caps do. White Caps are in Spain. Yes. And they're playing who? Preseason game. They're playing Inchon United FC. Inchon. I hope I have that right. I might be butchering that, but Inchon. Yeah. So where's Inchon from? Well, it's it's it's a Spanish side. The Spanish side. Yeah. In Spain. It makes sense. Exactly. There you go. A Spanish club team. There it is. In Spain. They lost their opening preseason match. By the way, if you're wanting to nil on Tuesday and we talked about yesterday, the announcement earlier in the week about Ryan Gold, unfortunately, needing a knee kind of a scope, a cleanup of his knee and he's supposed to help to come April. That injury with Ryan Gold is not great. We're going on months and months and months. We're going on almost a year that the injury originally took place, right? He was out last March. He's going through the same thing, Demko is like in terms of length of the injury, you know, do they got this injury nailed down or not? The fact they had so much success last year without Ryan. I know. It's pretty incredible. He is incredible because he's one of their best players.

4:08We should mention both the Giants and Royals are back home this weekend Giants take on Kelona tomorrow night. There's some star at the LEC that I think the Taylor family is going to see. So that's Giants at Kelona, seven o'clock at the LEC and they're at the LEC on Sundays that take on Red Deer. Tomorrow, the Royals are back at home. Victoria is there taking on Red Deer at six o'clock. The Warriors are in Rochester. They're back home next weekend. Four o'clock on Saturday for the Warriors. Yes, that's Rochester. That's right. Four o'clock. So they're on the road. There's always Abby Abbotsford's also on the road to their in Bakersfield. Tonight in Bakersfield, Saturday in Bakersfield for the Abby Connex. But last night we'll go back to, by the way, the Connex again, tomorrow against the Leafs four o'clock center of the universe, got to make sure we're taking care of that. Toronto universe in town four o'clock, four o'clock, so to accommodate the good people of Toronto. Of course. Well, you know the people. CBC to accommodate the center of the universe that connects have to play at four o'clock.

5:08But I'm with Donnie on this. I hate the reasoning. And I hate that the Connex have to turn their schedule for the Leafs. At the same time, I don't mind the game being done at seven. Games over at seven. If you're going to the game, games over at seven o'clock, you can go for a dinner after. You got the whole night ahead, whatever you want to do. So from that standpoint, I don't mind it. The reasoning behind it. I don't love. Last night though, we just, we started the show talking about it. Two nothing. The Connex beat the ducks, Rick. Their second win in 16 games for the Vancouver Connex. It's a bleak, man. It is bleak. But they got the win. I'm not going to poop on it. They got the win. They played an overall good team game. Adam foot was very happy with it. Juro Conner. He scored the one nothing goal late in the third period. And the key to me about Juro Conner's goal here, Rick, is the celebration after him. You guys watch him and the bros here, right? And I don't know if some of this. I don't know if there's some inside joke because he was really freaking out. And it was, I was just going to see, but we had a submission. I think it was yesterday, Rick and our inbox talking about the Washington capitals

6:13and the vibe around them when they were in town recently and the bench going nuts after every block shot and whatever. And look at, I know where the Connex are in the standings. I know what this month has probably been like for the Vancouver Connex in that locker room. Everyone probably hates coming to work, all of that. You also have to, you got to at least show you're still enjoying passion, a kid's game and passion to be a Vancouver Connex still. And this is what you see here. I thought this was just great to see because we haven't seen it a lot. You know, and little Conner's been one of the most consistent guys. Absolutely, Rick. Have you fought? It's 13th of the season. Heavy body. Yeah, skate can forecheck. And 13 goals, I think is career high, 16 in Pittsburgh. I got a double check on that. 16 is as high. Yeah, career high. True Conner's been great. Yeah. And, you know, if I'm a playoff team in the National Hockey League, I'm calling Vancouver for true Conner. And, you know, when the Connex start to get this rebuild going and start making trades, he could be one of the guys. He's got trade protection.

7:14But I loved the way he reacted to that goal. And there was a Connex goal against, last week as well, same reaction to this. You'll love the fact these guys love to score and they're showing some passion and enthusiasm with their care. And you, I know, I know where they are in the standings and like I say, I know it's probably a lot of dread coming into that building right now. Yeah. But you have to take the little victories and that was a little victory for them last night. And, Drew Conner, after the game, he talked about, you know, there was excitement and a bit of a buzz on the bench because it was the first time in a while. They had a lead and they were in a tight game late in the third period. That hasn't been happening a lot around here lately. So as I mentioned, his career high, 16 goals. And look, there's a lot of people that dump on that trade with Pittsburgh. I'm one of them. A first round pick for Marcus Patterson. I'm sorry. That's a big miss at this point with what we've seen for Marcus Patterson this year. But the Connex brought him in, O'Connor, they see him right away at the same time. Yeah. Yeah. I think two or three, four weeks after signing them again, they had them, they, rather for Nelvin Hadam and Pittsburgh before.

8:14So look, I know he's used with Drew O'Connor, he's been great, he's been consistent, he works hard, he cares, there's no issues with that guy. But if teams are calling on Drew O'Connor, you have got to listen. I've got to listen. You've got to listen. I think that was the best line for the Connex last night, by the way, as well. Drew O'Connor, add to Ratu and Jake Debross. Jake Debross, he was a monster last night. I think he had six shots. Just a really good game from him and a really good game from add to Ratu. I'm sorry. But if you're in this rebuild, I don't think that guy should be out of the lineup. Like, I think you need to find a place for that guy in the lineup. I think he's had, maybe he's had some defensive deficiencies at times this year, or he said, struggle to skate this year, but I know, I know, I know. I know. He's just skating in defensive play, but Ratu and then Sassan sit in the last night. I know. And he was on the left, he's on the wing last night, not center. And I just found that interesting. He's got to be one of your centers. You got from JT Miller and now he's on the wing. It's just, and I thought he struggled, but he's also, he's also missed so much time. He's coming off.

9:14Right. I'm lengthy. Right. I'm lengthy concussion. Exactly. Exactly. Something else I do want to talk about from last night's game. Yes. Nikita Tulapilo. Okay. I can't find the play anywhere. I thought somebody would have posted the play, but nobody did. He gets run towards the end of the first period. Ryan Pelling takes him out, drives to the net and goes right through Nikita Tulapilo. He did. And towards the end of the first period, Kevin Lankin and sitting on the bench had his full gear on, like ready to go. So I think they got word at that point that the concussion spotter had signaled down that they wanted to have a chat with Tulapilo, but there was no break in the action to get them off. So he ends up coming out late into the second period. Yep. After having the protocol and Adam Footsett concussion protocol. Yeah. The spotter. Yeah. The spotter. The concussion spotter told them, get over here. We got to check you out. Footsett post game, right? He had to take off all of his gear. Yes, he did. Which other players don't normally do, but he had to for whatever reason. So that's why it actually bled into the second period is because of the additional time

10:17and him getting all the stuff back on to come back in the game. But he gets run. Okay. So he started the show Monday talking about this after what happened to Brock Bessler on Sunday. Okay. Yes. The concussion. He gets run. Tulapilo gets run last night. No response. Nothing. There's nothing. Now. Now hold on. Late in the third period though. Derek, you got this from DPD. Okay. So DPD, I give him a ton of credit on this on this play. Tulapilo gets poked at. This is again, seven minutes left to go, a couple of jobs there and DPD goes enough of this. I think it was a Zellwiger. Yeah. Oh, and Zellwiger into the boards and kind of says, no, you're not doing this to our goal tender. See, this is the thing like this is where we disagree because you think they need more toughness in their lineup. I think you just need more of a pack mentality with just it was LWG is a offensive minded defense. Sure. But he did that. Tom Wilson. Rick. Brian rest had no if that if that was Tom Wilson is Pederson going to do that.

11:18Maybe not. Brian. Brian rest. I'm not pointing about no reaction to Brian has to have a team with no grit. Yeah, but I'm saying this is that these are the things you can't have a team that doesn't defend teammates. I appreciate what Pederson is doing here, but there's not enough of this. I agree. People in the city have been complaining about the lack of this for at least 10 years. But to my point though, is I think your set came furland game, you know, they've tried numerous guys. They've tried numerous guys, but there's not enough of this and look, I'm with you. I appreciate what Pederson did here, but there's just not enough of this because I was here. Did LeCarrie Mackie not take a bit of a shot last night? Yeah, he did. He did. But it was a weird play. I don't necessarily know the, I'm trying to remember who was. I don't think the ducks player saw him. I think it kind of ran into each other. So I'm not so frustrated about that. They need more size grit, more Canadians in lineup. I don't, I'll keep saying it and I don't, I have no issues with saying it, but I appreciate what.

12:18Yeah. I mean, look, I said. The play on Sunday, Brian Russ, like you bring up to, oh, he's not, Brian Russ had no suspension history. He's not a goon by any means either. I, I maintain that game was ending. So that's partial of why there wasn't a response. And I also don't think many of the players saw it outside of EP 40. Last night though, when Tova Pilos ran through, everybody saw that on the ice and nobody had a response. I was disappointed in that. Yeah. And again, he doesn't have to be, look at what DPD did on that play. He doesn't go and drop the gloves, right? He just does something to defend his teammate in a way. I get it. I get it. But it wasn't Tom Wilson. He went up against it. No, it wasn't offensive. But he still pushed back. Yeah. Okay. And I appreciate that. So more of that, please. Yep. More of that, please. I agree. I agree. But I, I appreciated that. Again, him showing something. And by the way, how, how I feel so bad for Tova Pilos. Why? He doesn't get the shadowed last night. Well, it's a shared shadow. It's a team shadow. It's a team shadow. I hate that, man. I hate that.

13:18I hate it. It happened. Okay. A shared shadow. If the one guy gets pulled, I understand. I understand a shared shadow. He got pulled because of injury. Because the concussion spotter. Yeah. He wasn't willingly leaving the game. So now I feel bad. He doesn't have a shutout, right? On his record. That would have been his first career shadow last night. So I feel bad. I feel bad. 14:21You know complaining the connox haven't made a bunch of trades yet because oh, they're in a rebuild This week was a perfect Chance for the connox to look at San Jose and Anaheim and what they've done look at the ducks top three goalscores Ryan ages 2221 and 20 they got a six foot five right shot center coming this guy's going to be unbelievable Roger McQueen in A couple of years maybe next year seven years in a row the ducks have had a top 10 pick now look at the connox in the last seven years They've traded a bunch of first-second routers They haven't picked in the top 10 the connox since Pad Cole said in 2019 how'd that turn out right and so one teams on the rise the ducks in the sharks two teams and the connox are in 32nd They got to get back to draft and high the connox have not had a top 10 pick in a long time They're best they're highest pick in the last five years will lander at 11th overall No top tech top 10 picks in the last five years I think the sharks and the ducks as should show the connox what they have to do here in the next five to six seven years

15:26They should what will they take the lessons that I'm not sure that Connox is so void of a young elite talent. Yeah, there is nothing in the system other than coots and he was 15th overall But you where's the kid that went first second or third overall they don't have a young elite forward That's coming up ready to take a spot They don't and it's just and it's just been so many bad decisions that the draft in the last seven years and they're Coming to what do they say roost the chickens coming home to roost. Yeah, so I'd come home or whatever that phrase is yeah But they should look at San Jose and they should look at a high and this should be a template for them Well, especially San Jose Dransers talking to you guys about that drink cross over this thing. They're in the lineup. Yeah, even at a high Yeah, they got Roger McQueen coming. This guy's gonna be beauty. Yeah, but you know what they paid a price You know, they paid a price they decided to rebuild and they're paying the benefits of it Okay, so I should mention the white caps. I said preseason game

20:38Um Yeah, I mean I don't know they were fine like I thought it was a terrible game like it was just boring Completely devoid completely devoid of any entertainment value whatsoever Um, you know, I like the Patterson line was going a little bit Um good for Drew O'Connor and Jake DeBrusc and Ahturatu to combine on that goal Nikita tolepilo played really well. It's too bad that you won't get the shutout in the stats book, but you know uh It's a shutout in his heart and all of ours and that's what matters and you know, honestly my my primary impression gentleman was On a Thursday night rainy To watch a team that had won one game in their last 15 and to sit through a game that lacked any juice excitement or entertainment value whatsoever Vancouver canucks fans First of all showed up

21:39Right that building wasn't full, but it was decent, right? um They were loud They were supportive There were a funny chance toward the end of the game I think it was the Larshiders chanting we want the cup As the connects after Teddy Bluger deposited that puck into the empty net to seal it and win the game And I just thought to myself like What's a darker moment than this? I mean, I think you have to go back to 99 I think you have to go back to the beret hold out to to Brian Burke's first year Um, you know, I think you have to go that far back to find a Moment in connects history that was darker than this, right? We're talking about a teen that Was effectively abandoned by one of their star sentiment over a rift with another one of the franchises star sentiment Uh, you know, just over a year ago now A team that made a mega money offer to their head coach and their head coach didn't believe in the direction of the franchise A team that went all in

22:40To convince Quinn Hughes to stay and couldn't And a team that basically whiffed or struck out on just about every single player personnel move They've made over the last 12 months only to have this season completely failed um We're not at a moment where this team has The sort of transcendent young star player and the lineup that fans can dream on as sort of a promise of better days ahead You know, the lander and zibuyum have played well. This isn't a shot at them But let's be real neither of those players were selected in the top 10 of the NHL draft right there's going to be a difference between What they are as prospects and and what's going to come as a result of this tanking season. So the fruits of this suffering have not been Enjoyed. They're not in evidence. They're not on the ice at roger's arena yet and they're at least a year away I mean that at least you're going to wait till at least next season Up before that even begins to trickle through You know, you think about all that you think about an organization that has changed direction significantly without ownership talking to this fanbase

23:44A management group that sort of drove us here into this ditch and has taken you know or or had no sense of accountability Nor have they really indicated like a significant come to jesus moment in terms of changing the way they do business A team coached by a head coach that was brought into win and helped convince Gwen used to stand didn't either I mean there is no reason For this fanbase to be there in those sorts of numbers Supporting this team with a certain like innocent loyalty the way they are And just sort of enjoying a good night out and and cheering and getting legitimately loud after the team second win and second win in 16 games And yet here we are like here we are I obviously came away from this entire road trip But especially from last night far more impressed by the dynamics in this market far more convinced that the rebuild the idea that That this market could possibly tolerate a rebuild

24:44Um, you know, it's probably a lie like it's probably like so many of the other things that connects a thought for the last decade flat wrong And You know, I think there's significant implications for that not not just in terms of What happens going forward, but in terms of the length of this process in terms of the sort of rope that this vibrant loyal hockey market is likely to Extend to a franchise that they're obsessed with That they want to support that they want to see win right this team can afford Can't afford if last night's any evidence can afford to take the sort of long view slow cook approach To you know accumulating the sort of critical mass young talent required to open a window for contention And deliver the sort of Stanley Cup that after nights like last night It's hard for me to suggest this market doesn't deserve like this market deserves a franchise that will aspire

25:45To what the fans reminded the franchise the last night This city does which is we want to come The trades aren't the trades aren't there yet um, you know Nine weeks ago is when they sent out the memo and you know sure what agents had to get in there and tell these guys Like what are you doing? You know, you're not getting a first that that sped up that I don't know. I mean what but that's a problem Rick like what what why are they allowing Why are they allowing an agent to dictate the schedule like the keeper surewood's not getting a first Today, but he's got a $1.5 million contract like things change Surewood's route to getting a first was always going to be that he's the solve a problem piece He's the piece that like oh, we need to shed money because we want to acquire Artemi panaren, but this isn't all in year for us will you take all of her Bjork strand and give us surewood Will you take our bad money and give us surewood so that we can keep going here's a 2027 first like that's

26:48That I mean the proactive way they traded surewood to me is part of the things I'm concerned about where you know like You've got to be a little bit more ruthless and creative than that not proactively I mean prices don't go down on 1.5 million dollar players Producing like surewood has this season ahead of the deadline there's no manager and hockey that will tell you that the connects We're sitting on a depreciating asset given those circumstances. So you know for me anyway like the agent getting involved in convincing The connects to act against their self-interest if if what you're saying is accurate Rick like that concerns me It is accurate, and I'll tell you something else that's accurate is dad's certainly it's dad millsteen Is now involved with cane it should not take nine weeks to trade of anarchy like What are we doing here? What are you going to get a fourth or fifth like you know 70 he's expensive though He's expensive. I understand like when you're when you're talking about a 5.15 million dollar commitment

27:49You know, that's very different from talking about a 1.5 million dollar commitment Um, so I understand and also surewood was playing really well. I mean surewood Uh Is a different caliber of peace entirely and the trade returns going to reflect that right that the involvement of the agent reflects that too, right Rick? Yeah, so I mean, I I think canes a more distressed asset and Yeah, I mean We'll see like hopefully they're able to return a mid-round pick and you know, I mean 5.15 million in pro-rated salaries and awful lot to spend to upgrade a fourth round pick to a third round pick If that's what they ultimately are able to to figure out here There's no real happy ending to that story unfortunately two guys that have uh picked it up here One is so Connor, you know, I got his 13th last night. Bluger's been good since he come back Yeah, Bluger's been really good and I could see teams looking at O'Connor and saying big Strong, can skate, can forecheck and now he's got 13 goals, you know, that's yeah low maintenance low maintenance

28:50And you look at last but he scores that goal and he's so happy and he's obviously a character guy But I mean there are there are pieces here. They haven't made a ton of trades But there's guys like Bluger and O'Connor that you know, if they keep going at the right there They can get something for these guys Yeah, I mean, you know Teddy Bluger returned to third round pick the last time he was traded at the deadline, right when he went from Pittsburgh To Vegas as sort of a 13th forward and if you look at what he's accomplished since then, right? I mean he's mostly been a top nine guy in Vancouver, right? He's at least matched or set new career highs The last two seasons when he's been healthy. He's been pressed in the top six duty Occasionally in Vancouver. I mean he's played that he's played his best hockey the best hockey of his career Across his Vancouver connects ten years. So I understand that he dealt with an injury earlier this season But based on the form that he's shown since he returns and if he looks good playing for Latvia at the Olympics like What's the argument to suggest that his price has gone down?

29:52Right like what why would his price be diminished given that he seems to be playing some of the best hockey he's ever played Across the last two and a half seasons, you know This the premium price that teams are paying for centers through the roof. This guy is You know like probably a low-end third-line caliber center I don't think he hurts you if he's in the top nine especially if he's surrounded by the right wingers And so yeah, I mean, I think a third-round pick should be the floor there I'd love to see them try to do better And then yeah, so and then withdrawal Connor, you know, that's a that's a guy with term and an attractive contract If he goes, I mean that should that should be a piece with real value especially You know sort of given all of the attributes that you cited and the attractive contract with the year remaining on it Especially for some of those teams that are going to face significant cap questions beyond this season You know you think about again, I come back to Tampa Bay because they're a contender that's always pressed up against the cap They've got major decisions to make with like kuturov extensions and some of those big ticket items to navigate this summer

30:58Um, they've got that that defenseman in in radish they've got You know who's just scoring it will I mean there's a lot of different balls in the air for that management group Does it help them to get an affordable piece who's affordable next year on to the books is they sort of navigate their options Is that something they'll pay for you know Those are the sorts of opportunities that do tend to come around uh at deadline season and if the right offer comes along for drill Connor I think that makes sense Thomas we haven't talked to you since that your demo was shut down hip surgery is ahead you wrote yesterday about how he fits Into the rebuild with this team of course contract extensions going to kick in it hasn't yet Preview that I haven't read it on the athletic. Well, where do you see him fitting into this rebuild coming off another major injury now And likely not really a movable piece Yeah, and it's unfortunate. I mean at this point all you can do is be patient with with a player Who has endured what Demko has right? I mean we're talking about a player that sustained

32:01I mean, I won't say seven separate injuries, but there's been seven separate extended injury related absences across his last 46 games Um, and four of those games have seen him leave early Uh as a result of injury um, you know That's a really tough spot to be in with the player whose extension doesn't kick in until next year um, you know There's not going to be a lot of exchange value there and and honestly he's probably going to have to prove to be durable over multiple seasons And and probably something like 70 to 80 starts now Uh before he has exchange value again Especially with how LTI is changing so that you can't you know sort of bury the full parade of a deal Um, unless a player is ruled out for the entirety of the season So at this point and and you know, I think the club's interest matched the interests of the fan base and match the interests of the player Which is that I mean we've all seen that your demko it is sort of dominant athletic positional genius best And he looks like one of the most imposing forces in net in the sport

33:02Uh, we'd all like to see more of that like we'd all like to see a super talented athlete be able to do the thing he's excellent at More consistently than we've got to and I'm sure that's what demko wants and at this point I think it's you know Basically the club's best plays is kind of just to wait this out You know, uh, the contract is not going to be straightforward to buy out Uh, you're not really able to buy it out in the first window anyways since it won't have kicked in until July 1 and So that's not a realistic option a trade is not going to be a realistic option This sort of one thing that that kind of presents itself to me anyway gentlemen is if the cap continues to rise You know one opportunity that might be available to a team like Vancouver is The ability to buy players not with cap space the way we saw during the flat cap era But with actual hard cash as some teams perhaps struggle to keep up with the the cap growth era And if that happens, you know one one sort of sort of piece that could have some backdoor value is is a piece whose

34:03Actual money due to them is far lower than the cap hit on their contract Um, you know if the connoxors are rebuilding here and they're a massing extra draft capital There is going to be a window in 2028 2029 the final year of demko's deal After his signing bonus is paid out where he'll be due one million in actual salary But have an 8.5 million dollar cap hit that that could be an appealing piece for you know a Non-traditional market team that's perhaps entering or or trying to reach the cap floor in the midst of a rebuild Um, you know that that might be a route for the connox to buy a useful player especially if they're able to draft well and have some you know a affordable Labor of their own good young Cost control players of their own that they've sort of developed in house You know that's sort of the route that that I think that's really the best route the best Hinge point I guess in in which demko's extension might Perhaps provide Vancouver with value as they go through this rebuilding process

35:07But you know that's sort of the the inside baseball of it all I think in the wake of this news Uh, just the amount of injuries that we've seen this player deal with I think we're all just hoping that he's able to get past it make a full recovery and get back to making the source of Spectacular sands that he's been synonymous with throughout his career in Vancouver You've made a full recovery from whatever was ailing you and so you were able to join us today and we appreciate you for that Thank you as always Thomas Anytime gentleman do all Thomas trans from the athletic and sports that 650 We haven't talked about the poll question. 37:11When Trevor linden started as an 18 year old who did he have He had a herald snaps who helped him Then the connox acquired Ryan Walter who's who's a great pro on and off the ice These guys help linden when he was a very young kid you can't just get rid of every single veteran You need guys like snaps and Ryan Walter to teach Those young kids in the next few years Uh, go ahead. We should mention Olympic roster freeze noon Wednesday February the 4th it goes into February the 22nd so few days left uh to get that uh Get a trade in if you want I mentioned this rick. I wanted to bring this up yesterday You reported that the minister of wild could be interested in car To be on the radar of course the link with quennews their best friends all of that stuff But you mentioned that you would take an offer that knocks their socks off for them to do it Garland does not have trade protection at the moment until july 1st and then his contract extension kicks in

38:12And I hear what you're saying about you can't have all young guys here you can't But then at the same time if you're in a rebuild And you need to gain assets right you need to gain either lottery tickets in the draft or you need to gain young players into this organization Who then are you trading To help said rebuild because if I look at the roster right demko now at this point not movable I'm an argue probably not movable not movable Tyler Myers is not going to move and I understand why with his family More than likely neurotic doesn't want to go anywhere. Okay Ep 40 you bring it up all the time. How much would they have to retain on on that trade right if there's interest out there So if you're going down this list and you're crossing off the names that are either not movable because of their contract situations or because of their life situations Then who are you moving out to help this rebuild you have to be talking about guys and to me There's very besides all of what I just said you also have very few guys that have value that teams are going to actually pay you for

39:17Like Connor girl and I think what probably have value maybe you have to retain because again that contract extension so as it kicked in Uh You mentioned Drew O'Connor maybe having value so then these are the guys that have to go under cane is out there He doesn't have value. I'm sorry. He is out there. He's out there. He's got no value if they get back the fourth round pick their trade or fourth I'm sorry. He doesn't Teams they call her out of a Dallas have called on a vendor case. Okay, so you know why he moved on. He's got size He's got 32 career playoff goals. Yeah, he's done. He has scored some big goals. Yeah, the Edmonton-esque I was think an Eskimo the cut their trade for trade for today the cut the club backs anyways He has scored some big goals for Edmonton teams like Evander size He he good depth his playoff record 32 playoffs. Oh, okay. Okay. They don't tell me the teams don't like them They like so so what are you getting realistically realistically? You're getting these guys are asking for a third They started out asking for a second. It's probably gonna end up with a fifth exactly

40:21So again, that's not really helping your rebuild. So who's helping your rebuild And like this is what I'm saying Connor Garland needs to be so for them to say oh unless our socks get knocked off We're gonna run with this guy and we're gonna let his no move kick in in July like to me these next six months from now Until July the first Because you've got the Olympic roster freeze then you got the deadline then you got the offseason The this is going to determine whether or not they're actually in a rebuild they can say it every day They want they can do every interview they want saying that they're in it It these next six months and the actions they make are gonna determine whether or not they're doing it Because I'm sorry a guy like Connor Garland is not part of your rebuild. He's not he's a great pro Show us so is key for sure would great pro and you're right all the things you're saying about veteran presence You can't just have a million kids I understand that but we're also gonna a lot of people in the inbox And I know trans is talked about this as well But we're getting a lot of people in the base side ocean for resort inbox about you still bring in veterans

41:22Maybe you sign shorter term contracts for veterans this offseason But you don't have a guy with Connor Garland's term as part of a rebuild. I'm sorry. That's nuts. Okay, but okay So let's let's go look let's look at this uh peterson signed a year and a half ago Uh Garland nine months ago. Yeah, uh demko nine months ago basser nine months ago The each guys that you want peddled all have term Yes, trade protection. Yes, they all they're not easy to move Garland doesn't Yeah, he does he does on July 1st, right, but that is why you have to make that trade now But it just amazes me that they signed all these guys nine months ago and now everybody wants them move Why did they sign these guys nine months ago because they didn't think they'd be in 30 second place in January right But they are now I I maintain I maintain this past offseason alone What they did with extending Garland when they didn't have to Extending demko when they didn't have to best circling back on Brock basser after after publicly embarrassing

42:22I have the fingerprints all these signings of the president right and so this offseason in my opinion This past offseason alone would be enough for you to have to make a regime change So what you want you want the president fire. Yes, you want the president fire and then Alvin You failed you everybody going into last offseason rick knew That them selling this idea that if you just keep the band together Despite losing jt miller you were going to somehow emerge in in into some kind of I don't with situation that kept quennews around was so false and it's and it's all of those decisions that all those bets They made this past offseason every one of them has failed So if that happens How do you then go? Yeah, these guys are still cool to lead us into a rebuild in the next chapter of the organization That doesn't make any sense to me. No And you're right It's a bad look that you're trading all these guys after signing them But again, what's your reality now? Okay reality now is your 30 second at this moment

43:23You're more than likely going to be 30 second next season So so let's go let's get with this rebuild and I'm not saying all the work needs to be done by the trade deadline Because I know there's a lot of impatient people out there But again by July first that's going to tell me if this is a rebuild or not because most of this roster should be out the door And that's they have trade protection and they're essentially unmovable and again that list is long Yeah, okay, so you want the president gone. He's got term you want the GM gone. He's got term You want the head coach gone. He's got term so they're paying OEL 4.5 million You want this owner who doesn't have the money for a practice facility to pay three guys not to play To work here next year. Who's that what you want? Who signed off on that? Is that what you want? Who signed off on those you want everybody fired? Who's got term yeah, and so if you were the owner of the connox Would you like to pay money to people not to work for you? Well, maybe you don't make those bad decisions in the in the first place So were you criticizing Rutherford and Elvin when the connox were in game seven against seven? That's a long time ago, Rick That was a year and a half ago and look how much has happened since that time. I'm sorry

44:25How they see you crying I didn't see you crying and saying fire Elvin a Rutherford when they were in game seven against seven But who would you were doing post game shows and loving it? Who would Rick? Yeah, the reality is from that time Almost every move this regime's made has failed the organization So how do you keep rolling with those guys? Well, I don't get just because oh we spent a lot of money on them This is what's been the problem with this organization is they make moves and because there's going to be pain with the consequences They just choose not to do it No, we're just not going to deal with the pain. It'll eventually go away and we'll deal with it And I'm sorry, you know, we've we've we've bashed heads on this a lot He's a billionaire owner If you can't handle Absorbing costs being a billionaire owner whether it's with your building whether your players whether your coaches management whatever You should probably not be in this game anymore It's gotten really expensive to be an owner, but an ain't changing. Thanks for doing this today. How are you sir? Very good. How you guys doing good good? We wanted to get you on because of what's happening here Vancouver that's your demco dealing with another injury and unfortunately it's another hip injury You well documented you had hip surgery yourself So first of all just your reaction to demco dealing with another injury and what's been a long line over the last few years Yeah, it's too bad because I mean when he's healthy he's been incredible He's been so good when he's been healthy and able to play so it's just very frustrating I'm sure for him as well as the organization the fan base because you hate to see That kind of talent in his prime years just sort of derailed by these injuries and I don't know the nature of it But you know, I know he had the knee injury and then in college he had two hip surgeries from from what I understand at BC

54:56So anytime you have to go back into the hip again I'm sure it's not a good sign So again without being a doctor or knowing his medical specifically It doesn't appear good on the surface. So I mean we can speculate all you want but you have to wonder What the future holds for his career if you can get back out there if you can play or if you can be the same guy that he was So again having you know, I had the hip surgery is a pretty you know straight forward laborable pair But you know, I think maybe where I was at my career at 33 is a little bit harder for me to come back Then if I had been younger in my 20s or something like that and just would everything that happened afterward Just didn't really line up for me to to get back into league So ideally this isn't the end of the road for him and that he's got some good years left You mentioned it Corey 2017 after the 2017 18 season you had The hip surgery yourself When did you after that who after the procedure was done? When did you start to feel normal with training and and and just Feel normally on the ice surface again Yeah, it's tricky because I mean medically you're clear You know, I was cleared after about five or six months. I was ready for training camp

55:59And they ease me into it a bit You know, just just not pushing too hard and trying to get me ready But everyone I spoke to and it ended up being true was that it takes about a full year to feel normal again As you said, where you don't it's not even pain. It's not that it hurts and all it's just You just haven't had the range of motion. You haven't put it in stressful situations. So I think it took me about a full year to finally feel like it was it was myself again and Unfortunately, you know, you try to play through it that that six months in your you come back You want to get back and I'm not you know, making excuses or trying to blame it But you know, it just didn't quite feel right when I did come back and and then it pushed me back too soon That was the timeline, but I think your body reacts a certain way and it's a pretty major Intersection there for a goal tender your hips and as you so much of it of the game is played through your hips. So You know, even just being off a few percent or maybe just a little bit It can really change the way you play a bit or maybe you don't feel as comfortable. So You know, like I said, it took me about a full season. They're fully calendar year to feel right in that point

57:01You know things it started to kind of slide a bit in my level of play and it just was hard to come back from Cory, I think this is seven injuries in two years for Demko. He's only played 43 games in the last two years When you think about it is it some of it bad luck He's a big goal ten or six four What could be some of the reasons for him getting injured so often? Yeah, it's tough to say I mean, I don't know the ins and outs of you know the training staff and the program there I'm not gonna knock on those guys. They work incredibly hard to keep everybody on the ice as much as they can because you know that they don't want to Be under the gun either. So you know some guys is just it just isn't in the car Some guys your frame or the way you're built or your genetics. It's just you're more prone to injuries It's a demanding position as you know. I mean, it's it's a lot of strength of the body You do a lot of things that aren't naturally Your body isn't really made to do so You put pressure and torque on unique places that are pretty I don't say fragile, but even when they go they go pretty hard. So knees hips L that kind of stuff

58:02Structural injuries are a little more difficult soft tissue. You kind of all right. We can work through this You know, it's groins or hamstrings or that kind of stuff you can maybe train towards or treatment or gear something that says all right Can we find an efficiency and maybe make you better in that area? But sometimes when it comes to structure man It's not a whole lot you can do it. It's just the luck of the draw and Unfortunately, he seems to have kind of drawn the short end of that stick when it comes to that will those more major injuries Hey, Corey, you know, I fully believe if Demko was healthy all year he would have made that U.S. Olympic team I want to ask you about the Olympics. What country right now has got the best goalies? Which country are you worried about goal tending? Well, the country of the best goalies isn't in the Olympics. The Russians. They are I don't know Maybe it's a good thing, but now the choose between Fast Lesky, Barosky, Sorokin and Chesterkin. That would have happened to have got left off and then who played but Now for the teams who are there, I mean it's tough because I would say probably Americans have the best goal tending depth for sure You can pick any one of those three guys

59:02It gets tricky though. Sometimes it's it's almost easier to just have the guy when you had carry price or you had Marty or you had Roberto In Canada. It's like he's the guy. He's gonna play When you have three guys you can play it gets a little tricky because you got to pick the right one And if things go south or if the one of them struggles who do you go to and it's almost like you know show me a team of three goalies I'll show you a team with none So I mean, you know, obviously other countries are envious of their depth, but I'll be interested to see who Who they picked to be the start. I'm sure he'll about go get the first shot at it But I would be afraid to move off quickly if it doesn't look brighter if he's not playing well because he got two other options there and You would hate to have one guy not playing well and kind of go down with the ship leaning on him when you have other choices So but Canada's gonna be interesting too. I mean all eyes are on them You know, they proved last year they could win with Bennington, but he has not been very good this year. So yeah I almost think he gets a little bored with With things that you know regular season hockey and maybe he needs a little shot in the arm like playoffs or Olympics to get his juices flowing competitively But that'll be an interesting increase to watch as well

1:00:03Montreal fired their goalie coaches week Both their top goalies the same percentage under 900 Sam mountain bald head. He's gone backwards this year. Did that surprise you? Did that surprise you that move? A little bit. I mean, you know, it's that's that's how you get coaches fired goal tending, right? But there's head coaches or goalie coaches. They can make a career.
