So you're battling, you're working through this cold. Unlike some guys like you when you have a couple of sniffles. That's not correct at all. Donnie and I pushed you because we're veterans. Yeah, that's not correct at all. Yeah. I enjoyed Derek laughing even at that with what you just said there. Speaking of the cold, it's going to get real cold in Ontario, down south. Massive with your storm ahead. People are freaking out about that. We got a picture from Saskatoon to minus 48. Yeah, we'll show that later on in the show. It's getting cold. It's getting cold. January. Okay. First of all, let's go back to last night before we look ahead to what's happening this weekend. The Golden Ice, the Vancouver Golden Ice. I love this. All over the Toronto Scepter's five, nothing. Yeah. At the sold out Pacific Colosseum 14,000, the story of the game. Well, outside of Christian Campbell's Shutout, the story of the game was Sarah Nurse.

3:02Yeah. Two goals for Sarah Nurse, second game back with the Golden Ice. Look at that crowd. Yeah, well, the crowd is just, I mean, it's so lively to Rick. All the youngsters in the audience when they were panning to them last night. Just a really great vibe at the call. And it's great. The Colosseum, you know, it's getting a second life. I know it's obviously had concerts. But what comes to hockey? Second life is a tenant here. And it's just great to see. Sarah Nurse is worth the price of a mission alone, not alone everyone else. Just a great effort by the Golden Ice. Five, nothing over Toronto. And they're the lowest score team in the league. So that was good. So far, yeah. They were tied with Seattle. The other thing is Vancouver is now leading the league in attendance. Yeah. That's huge. Well, it's a bit of a, it's been a bit of a stop start situation since they played their first game. Like they've been on road trips. They've been, they've been playing and take over two or stops, which they've got another one. Yeah, I didn't like to have been at home for a while. It's been a while. Yeah. I didn't like that.

4:02You don't do that to an expansion team. You bring them home, you know, one or two weeks. And but this, this delay was too much. It's a lot coming up in March. I think they have five straight home games, though. So they're going to be able to bring it on a roll there. Great shout out to Vancouver, the way they're supporting this team. Yeah. Absolutely. Absolutely great. And like I say, again, the audience, a lot of kids in that audience, just a great energy. I wasn't at the game, but watching the game at home. I can really feel the energy at the Coliseum. So outstanding work by the GoldenEyes. Five, nothing over the Toronto sectors. And again, Kristen Campbell with the shout out for the GoldenEyes. Looking ahead to this weekend, we'll get to the connox in a second. Vancouver Warriors, Donnie mentioned this yesterday. The Warriors are in Ottawa to take on the Black Bears. I like that. Yeah. The Ottawa Black Bears. That's four o'clock today. Abbots Fords at home. The Abbots Fords connox are at home. San Diego. Yeah, Perry Games. San Diego, Tomorrow night and Sunday. Abbots Fords taking on San Diego. The Giants are in Prince George. So they're away and the Royals are in Saskatchewan for two games this weekend.

5:05Both are back at home next weekend. So they are on the road. And of course, the NFL and Sunday. Broncos Patriots, AFC Championship game, NFC Championship game. Seahawks Rams down the I-5 in Lumenfield at 3.30 p.m. So that is going to be the must watch game of the weekend. There's no doubt about that. I just mentioned Abbotsford. Okay. Abbotsford at home to San Diego for two games this weekend. But the big news is what happened yesterday with the Abbotsford connox Rick. They got their rings. Oh, look at this. Here's a photo of said rings. Oh, you got to love this. I actually like these. I think I love the color scheme. I don't know about how many diamonds and everything. Yeah. Well, you see a lot of teams post like an in-depth graphic or video about their rings. Oh, they didn't. They haven't at least yet done that. I don't know the cost of spring. Yeah. I don't know how many diamonds or whatever. But it's a sharp looking ring. Yep. And to be honest, if Donnie was here, he'd probably say. It's also not too over the top.

6:05Some of these rings are a bit over the top. Some of them now open up. Like the top part opens up. And then there's you can see stuff on the inside. And it's kind of getting ridiculous with some of them. And this seems like a nice ring. This is memories. These guys were bonded together by this playoff run. And you know, they might run into each other in 20 years. And say, hey, you guys remember the call to cup run? This is what unites people. It's stuff like this. And this ring. I love the fact that they put the Johnny Connack right on top. It's a very sharp, sharp looking ring. Yeah. I agree. I mean, they did a good job. They had the banquet dinner, whatever it was yesterday, down here at Rogers Arena. It was nice that they were able to have a team day off or a day off for both clubs. So everybody could share their part in it, both with the Vancouver and the Abbotsford organization. Because we know what the players up here this season. And also the people behind the scenes that are tied up with both organizations. And they were able to partake in it. I still don't really love that it was down here though.

7:06I think it should have been out in Abbotsford where you are terribly from what I hear. Yeah. It was supposed to be in Abbotsford. And then something changed. Something changed and they came to Vancouver. So I'm not sure why that changed. Again, I would have liked to see the Abbotsford. I think the resources are more in Vancouver. Well, of course. I mean, you're going to have, you know, no disrespect. Nice restaurants. You've got their building here. But this was done at Rogers Arena. Yeah. Yeah. So there's part of me that understands it. Yeah. Anyway, they are nice rings. And I'll be interested to see now that they have them. If this weekend, if they're shown off at all to the audience, the Abbotsford. If, you know, if there's any kind of video or anything about them getting their rings, this being a marquee moment is a little late. They should have been here at the start of the season. But regardless, they got them now. And it looks like they had a good time last night. Are you not showing Venus Carlson? I, you know what? I forgot to grab that video. He was unbelievable. I, I, I set you the photo last night. Yeah. It's just him sitting at a table. It's nothing. It's a box.

8:06It shows the ratio. Yeah, I know. They've got the, I will say they've got personalized boxes. All these rings. Can you find that Venus Carlson? No. If you want, Quinn, I don't even know who had it. It's just Google, uh, Linus Carlson. Yes. Google that, Quinn. Abbotsford ring at a table in Vancouver. Yeah. Google all of that, Quinn. It'll pop up. It'll pop up. But, uh, yeah. They had a, he showed off the person that took the photo showed off the box. That was personalized with his name on it. Look at, look at Quinn. Look at, look at this kid. This young kid. Yeah. He's good. This is Quinn Taylor. So there's the ring in the box. I, I think the box is just as impressive as you know. Yeah. That's a hell of a box. Okay. You know, but I'm probably that alone. No, I'm, I'm serious. Yeah. Yeah. Some of them. It's got blue rug there. Yes. Uh, blue, uh, is that rug or what is it? Well, an insert. Yeah. Yeah. Probably velvet. Carpet or whatever. That's a, a very impressive, uh, photo there with, uh, Linus Carlson getting his ring. Yeah. So there you go. Abbotsford, again, a little late, but they finally got their rings.

9:06Their parent club, the Vancouver Cunuts back in action. Oh. Tonight, they look at this coming off a win. They're going to look and build on a win. They're going to try and win two in a row tonight. The New Jersey Devils are in town. Not the same zip now with no Quinn Hughes here. And Luke Hughes, by the way, with the devil's, Luke Hughes is on the IR. He sustained a kind of a weird injury. A shoulder injury and Calgary the other night. Yeah. He kind of tugged on and then he, it's like instant pain for him. So he's going to be out for a while. He's going to be out for a while. He's going to be out for a while. These 10 games he's going to miss, uh, for the Devils. So only one Hughes bro on the ice tonight. But that's not a thing. Vancouver. Well, I understand that. The Devils, who cares? Yeah. I don't care if there's two or one Hughes in town tonight. It's not a story anymore. Well, the three of them just played together in Minnesota. In Minnesota. Yeah. But I don't care if the Devils are here with the Hughes brothers. There's no more story. Yeah. Well, thank you. Because there's no one. I can care less if they're here. So they take on the New Jersey Devils tonight. The connox do Sunday. The penguins are in town. Rick, the penguins. You see this last night?

10:06Oh. Six two over the orthers. They went in and put the boots to the orthers. They beat their old goalie. They beat their old goal tester. It's a jerry local. Yeah. Stuart Skinner was had the night off. Yeah. Arthur Cee-Law's picking up the ramps. Cee-Law's. For Pittsburgh. Rick, the big thing with Pittsburgh. Okay. Second in the Metro division. Sydney Crosby is 15th in league scoring. He's got 56 points, Rick, in 49 games for this guy. He's just a wonderful ball. I mean, he's one of these athletes. We're seeing these older athletes, whether it's Tom Brady. You know, whether it's LeBron James. Because they take care of themselves. You're right. You're right. Yeah. It's a 12-month-a-year thing. 12 months-a-year. And he's such a pro on and off the ice. Crosby. There's no screwing around with him. He's not on Twitter. Like all these hockey players. Checking what people say. He's a professional, goes in, does his job, gets out. Yeah. So the pen's in here on Sunday afternoon, three o'clock. So they're up against the Seahawks game, which is too bad. Tonight is the Devils. We should mention from the Kanox angle. As they mentioned, they're looking to win their second game in a row.

11:06Filipino appears to be back in the lineup this evening. We'll wait to know around 10-30 when there's line rushes. It was a lot of guys had maintenance days at yesterday's practice. Yeah. And Adam Foot said yesterday we'll see how Filipino responds. Right. But they're expecting him to be in the lineup after yesterday's practice. So if that's the case, we all know the situation. Out since October the 19th when he took that hit from Tom Wilson. And hopefully he's back in the lineup tonight. And what J.P. Barry said, it's not the Kanox or his practicing. It's the doctors. They have their own protocol. They got an okay needle. When the doctors say it's okay, then he'll place. That's the bottom line. Yeah. Yeah. And I mean, again, I'll go on record to say I'm very scared about him coming back. I know nobody can force him to retire anything like that. But when we're up to what is a six, seven, eight concussions or whatever it is now document. That's just documented. Yeah. I'm worried for this guy to return. He's got a wife. He's got a family. He's had multiple multiple concussions in his career.

12:06The brain should not be dealing with this over and over and over. And I'm sorry. History leads you to the fact that likely something is going to happen again. I hope not. I'm not wishing for anything for this guy. But I think everybody is going to be quite scared watching him return to the ice. But regardless, he's being cleared by medical people. He's being cleared by the Vancouver connox. And it looks as though he's going to be back in the lineup tonight for the connox. And so interestingly, Rick, all of a sudden, they kind of got a log jam in centers. His heat was back. Bluberg's back already. Ross. He's not back. David Kamp has had a decent stretch recently. Attu Ratu was a scratch here the night. Adam Foot said that there's a possibility. Attu Ratu maybe goes to the wing. Wow. See how that goes? Well, Sassan can go to the wing. Yeah. That's a great thing about Sassan is he's lethal with his speed at the middle or on the wing. Yeah. So there's no issues with Sassan going to the wing as well. Yeah. My thing is, and you brought this up too. You know, we just saw Ars de Bain spend a few games in the press box up here.

13:08You didn't get, you know, I don't want to see how to rat to have a prolonged period of doing that. Get him back to Abbess for that. Like, I don't want. I don't want. I don't want. He's not. He's not. He's not. The next move that's going to be made is when Rossi comes back. Yeah. You're right. He's one Rossi. And we don't probably when you're going to see Ratu go back down. And more than likely, it looks like auto or sorry, Marco Rossi will be back likely right after the Olympic break. Yeah. It sounds like it's questionable to get him in before then. And we should mention, by the way, this Olympic break, it's coming up fast. Seven games left. That's it. Seven games. Then we hit the Olympic break. Roster frees goes into effect 12 p.m. on February the 4th. Yes. Loss until the 22nd. 11 days till the roster frees. Yep. And when the roster frees comes back, they only have 12 days to the deadline. Yes. Yeah. The Vancouver Connects effectively have 23 days to do all their wheeling and dealing. That's it. Yep. That's it. 23 days. I'm curious if we see things percolate in that Olympic break.

14:11And then they're announced right after. You know what I mean? I don't think Jim Rutherford's unplugging his phone for two weeks. No. While these guys are over. I think guys are still going to be talking. Maybe see some things in place. And then we, you know, see some deals right out of it. So yeah. Conox and New Jersey tonight at Rogers Arena. We have a lot to cover. You've got an update on Derek Forebert. We're coming up on two weeks since the that your Demko injury. We still don't have much clarity on that situation. So we'll talk about that. Demko, I checked in last night. Nothing new to report. There's still evaluating on Demko. So that they did. They're not there yet to announce anything. But that, but that is weird. I'm so weeks tomorrow is when he got hurt and Toronto. Two weeks tomorrow is when he got hurt and tried. If you're just deleting. I was told right away that they're going to take their time and check everything. So stop. Okay. And he doesn't have. And he doesn't have to come back this year because they're in 30 second place. Why are you going to bring them back? No, I, that's fine. But to just have this, you know, continued thing about him.

I'm not sure if we're going to see him again this year. Boy, that guy's had a tough year with injuries. You, you've had a tough. I shouldn't be looking down. You're bad. I don't know. What is it? And I'm so lucky that I have an awesome immune system. Like, I very rarely get sick. When I do get sick, it's usually pretty short. Like, my wife gets sick and I get sick at the same time. And she's sick for like a week and I'm sick for 48 hours. You know what I mean? Like, I'm very fortunate. What do you say? What do you say? What do you say? I'm a giant baby. No, I'm just, I'm lucky. But I'm lucky especially because I can't handle it. The moment I get sick, I'm like on my absolute keyster for days on end. You know what it is? It's all the smoothies. It gets all those nutrients. It helps the immune system. Yeah, it's all the ground spinach, Rick. Exactly. Yeah, it's all the ground spinach, a kale, kale. Tomas, the connox. Eleven game losing streak is in the rear view mirror. They pulled out a victory against the capitals on Wednesday night.

20:16And I think, if I heard it correctly, right after crossover on Wednesday, you were predicting that was not going to be the case. I think you thought tonight's game might have been the more likely win for the connox or the two. So what did they do Wednesday night that got them the victory? Yeah, I thought they'd struggle with the cap's East West puck movement. And they did on that initial power play. But overall, I thought they played a really strong defensive game. I thought Aliyah is cutterson in particular as the third period. Sort of went along was was immense. I think he was a critical part of them sort of holding that lead. So yeah, I mean, they did a, they did a good job. Look, I was, I was saying that I thought it was a tough matchup. But you know, it's hockey, right? Like the way that hockey works. I thought the islanders and the devil's games were their best opportunities to end the losing skid. I thought that capitals game was going to be a tough one, especially because that cap's team really needed the win. But the connox were up to the task and then some. And I mean, obviously, look, they got some bounces, but they were do some bounces, right?

21:16You don't lose 11 in a row without bad luck in the NHL. These are still NHL players on the connox roster. I mean, look up and down the lineup. There's a ton of useful players, even if there's no sort of star game breaker. Of the sort that you need to be a playoff team these days. But I mean, you know, this, this team needed bad luck to win to lose 11 in a row. Excuse me. You know, they finally get like the Vandercane deflection goal and and a couple bounces their way. And that's inevitable. They're going to get more over the balance of the season, even though they remain a limited group that's. Uh, I think, uh, rightly at the bottom of the NHL standings and is no threat to move up from there. It appears as though Filipino will return tonight. If it's not tonight, it's going to be probably Sunday against the penguins. Suddenly, they've got this dearth of centers that are healthy. Pederson. Bluger just came back. Now, he does back. Sure. Then you've got all these options. Are you concerned at all about, you know, at to Ratu getting squeezed in this situation?

22:16He was scratched. You know, foot said yesterday, he might end up moving to, to wing. Are you concerned about that? No, he's been getting squeezed no matter who's in the lineup. I mean, he was getting squeezed with Max. It's on and Lucas Rikle down the middle. So I mean, why, why would I be worried that he'll be squeezed now? You know, he hasn't really had the 1015 game opportunity that this team gifted Rikle. For example, after the trade at any point this season. I don't expect it to come. I have no problem with him being moved to the wing to be totally honest with you. I think it's possible that his foot speed will play better on the wing than it does in the middle of the ice anyway. Although I'd be reluctant to give up on that experiment now. So yeah, I mean, I'm not too worried about it. What, what I will mention to your gentlemen is our steep bans was reassigned. If he was activated later today, as we expect, they'll be up to 23 men on the roster. And the only real waiver exempt guy is Liam Ogren, right? With Marco Rossi still to activate this team doesn't want to reassign Liam Ogren to the American league.

23:19They want to give him more, more NHL opportunity, not less. He's earned it. And so, you know, one thing to watch here is as the conucks get these numbers back and deal with a 23 man roster crunch. There's a few different discussions happening internally. One, I do think the club, this isn't a thing. The club would like to potentially expedite a depth trade of one of their forwards prior to the Olympic break in order to sort of solve this number crunch. If they don't, I think there's going to be some serious discussion about whether or not to reassign Ogren or perhaps to expose a depth guy to waivers. We'll sort of see exactly how they handle it, but this club remains a motivated seller as they sort of plan for the return of. Yeah, as you said, a variety of different centers who've missed some time lately or over the course of the season. Rolling Patterson, Keetle, Rossi, Bluger out down the middle of their forward group.

24:19I think that's something this club is very eager to see. Give them a chance to evaluate sort of where this team is at given the internal belief that center injuries have really sabotaged or submarine to this team season. And also evaluate some of their wingers, almost all of whom to a man have struggled over the course of the season, whether it's Kane, Bessert, Garland, Dubrasque. You name it, they probably failed to meet expectations this year. And I do think there's a feeling that center depth or the lack of quality above replacement level centers that this club has been able to roll out tonight. It's been a big part of that. So those are the couple of things that I'm watching as the connects begin to get some pivots back into the lineup. What did you make a JP Berries comments about a possible Ellie's Patterson trade? I mean, to me, he sounded open-minded, gentlemen. Right. They sounded open-minded to me. And that's interesting. For sure, I think we'll all put that in our back pocket and consider it.

25:20This team is listening on everybody with the exception. I mean, Phil Peronix is not really an exception. They are listening on everybody, but in Heronix case, it feels a little more circumstantial. They're in 30 seconds. But I don't think Patterson's necessarily in that tyranny, right? I think this club would seriously consider an offer. If they got an attractive one for Elias Patterson, as for the will he wave question? I mean, that's one that you threw at JP directly this week, Rick. And, you know, I didn't hear a door slam and shut. So, obviously, this is going to be complicated, right? And the wake of the Sherwood and Hughes trades. One thing to bear in mind is you look up and down the Canucks books. And there's not a lot of straightforward value remaining, right? There's a few rental players. Bluger, Kane, David Camp. But even there, Evander Kane, modified no trade. Teddy Bluger, modified no trade, right? So even those assets aren't necessarily straightforward, but relatively straightforward,

26:21and those players presumably will be motivated to get an opportunity to prove themselves in a contract here in the Stanley Cup playoffs, which is an opportunity the Canucks can't offer them. But aside from that, I mean, you've got a variety of players that would be very complicated to move, either because of their family or no move situation, no move control. I'm talking about your Myers, your Lincoln and tear guys, Patterson would apply to that. Honestly, I mean, to Brass would apply, Besser would apply, right? So there's a variety of players whose trade value would be significantly complicated by their level of control over the situation. You've got the Heedle Demko tear guys who would be severely complicated to move, because of industry perceptions about the injury risk involved. And then you've sort of got the young key guys, like guys like Zibuyum and Tom Belander, who would obviously have value, but who are, you know, sub 21-year-old players that this club's going to view as key parts of their future.

27:23There's just not a lot of significant trade assets left for this team to pedal on the trade market between now and the trade deadline, which is its own complication for this group to manage. Can I cement with North Dakota defenseman Keaton Verhoff this week? It's going to be fascinating to me to see where they end up drafting. I don't care if they finish 30 second, we know they might not get the first pick. And who they take, and who they take, it is going to be really interesting to see who they end up with this summer in the draft. It is, Rick. And look, here's the thing to remember, right? If you end up with the highest probabilities, if you finish 30 second and have the highest probability of picking first overall at the start of the NHL draft lottery, your most likely draft slot, 55% plus weighted coin flip territory, is third overall, right? That's something we have to remember. And that goes without saying, you know, that the long-sorted history of the Vancouver can accept the NHL draft lottery,

28:24this team's most likely draft slot should they remain in 30 second place, which I think is overwhelmingly probable at this point. It is the third overall selection. This draft is viewed publicly as having two elite wingers at the very top, through the connoxia that way, right? That's a question that remains. But if you end up in third, most likely, the two high-end forwards are going to be off the board. And then you're probably looking at, you know, center types, time and Lawrence doesn't have a point yet in NCAA competition in five games with BU. That's sort of an interesting factor to consider. The other really high-end centers in this draft, we go Björk, Caleb, Malhotra. You know, they're probably top 10 picks, but probably not third overall guys. Yeah. I think Keaton Barehoff, the Latvian defender, Albert Smith, Chase Reed, the American defender in the NHL. I think those are three players that the connox are very high on. I think at mid-season meetings, those were players that they regarded as being in discussion for as high as number one overall.

29:30So they're going to get a very good prospect. And I don't think you can fear, you know, sort of the idea that obviously this build needs an leap forward. Obviously, that's the ideal situation given sort of where Vancouver's assets are. But if you have to build a surplus on the back end, because that's the best player available when you're up, and you end up in third overall or what have you, so be it. You know, like that's how it works. You can't be picking for positional need that high in the NHL draft order. If Barehoff's top of your list, you've got to go with it. And he's an enormously impressive young player. You know, we learned something new about Thomas every week. He's got a love for smoothies. He's apparently got an immune system. Yeah. Amazing immune system. So she's very strong. It's amazing. We learn according to you. We get a new fact about Thomas trans every week on this program. How often have you seen me miss work? Well, at six years, right? Is it true? I've been the same. This is the first time I caught it all year. Oh, that's true. Yeah.

32:32Rough and rough this morning. They've traded a captain. Bohorva. They traded another captain Quinn Hughes in the last two and a half years. They traded a guy who had a letter, J.T. Miller. They traded guys like Tanner Pearson. Who would have been a candidate? They traded guys like Luke Shen. They've had so many leaders walk out the door in the last two to three years. Maybe there's a reason why 74% are voting no. Yeah. I mean, look at. I think now when you reflect on Quinn Hughes as a captain, maybe he should not have been. I think some people feel that way that maybe that was a bit of a mistake to put that on his shoulders. I think the other thing is Rick. I think when a lot of people are voting no on that is also because I think if you're turning the page right in a rebuild. You're turning a page on it on this group of players. Then to me, that next player would signal that full that book being fully turned over. And so we've had some people right into the poll here on Twitter.

33:35Or our base at Osfer Resort inbox bringing up like Brady Coots, for instance. And look, maybe that's four years away. That's down the road. Right. But okay. The question is today. And why are you bringing up Coots? Because this has got nothing to do with it. Yes, it does. Yes, it does. This is two to three to four years away. Which is why some people are voting no. Those Coots have to get to the NHL before you hand them a C. He's got to earn the shirt. Sure. But I think that might be five, six years away. But so what? So you're going to wait five, six years, not in the capital. Why? And it may or may not be Coots. I was torn between this question or asking if you care if they have one. Seriously, I don't know that a lot of people care if they have one or not. What is it really matter? I think maybe if you're a team in a window, maybe it matters. But other than that, there's no league rule. You don't have to have one. You don't have to have one. You don't know that. And you absolutely can. There's no reason why you can't have five, six years away from being named a captain. I'd rather this team not have a captain for eight years. Oh. If it means picking the right guy that can then be a captain for a long span of time.

34:39I quit. You can come in here. I'm okay with Heronic. I just stop. I'm not. I'm okay with Garland. You know why? Because they decide to decide long term deals here. And you know what? They want to be a part of the healing process. They're okay staying here as of now. But I'm okay with Garland or Heronic getting the C. I mean, I'm not. And I know Donnie brings this up. And some people rip us for it. That's fine. I'm sorry. Heronic still doesn't like the media. I know he made some jokes. I'm not even a captain. That's part of your responsibility. That's part of your responsibility. Part of your responsibility, Rick, is being the spokesperson. When he used was awful interview. Yes. And so that's where a lot of people say he should have been. So do you think he failed as a captain? Yeah. Because he was a bad interview, Quinn. That's part of it. There's a lot of people that failed as a captain. Well, because he wanted out of his sword answers and stuff. He wanted out. That's why he failed as a captain. Hit that with the media. Just like you will to the fire of the discussion around him.

35:41Yeah. I agree with Quinn. I'm sorry. When you look disinterested in taking shots at the media, I know some people love when players do that, because they don't like the media. That's fine. But in a roundabout way, it's also looking like you're disinterested to be part of the Vancouver Cup. And if you're a fan of the team and you see that and watch that, I don't want that guys. My captain. I never saw that from Borhovert. I never saw that from Henrik Siddeen. I never saw that from Marcus Nazlin. Those are the three in my lifetime. Great that I witnessed. I'll go back to Trevor Lyndon and Stan Schmiel. I identify with those captains more than you guys would. Good pros on and off the ice. Leaders hated to lose, stood up in the media. I never saw Trevor once do what Quinn Hughes did. And act like a baby in front of the media. I never saw Stan Schmiel do that. And he lost a lot. And Stan never asked out to the better captains the connox have had have been Schmiel and Lyndon. Henrik Siddeen is on that podium firm. And Henrik never. I mean, and again, I bring this up a lot.

36:43And I know people don't want to hear about the media all that much. But that's fine. It's also never been easier to be a Vancouver connoct dealing with the media. Never. Never. Yeah. Because they go on the road. Nobody travels with the team. It's all in house guys. And you also pick players that speak to the media. It's not just grab a guy to talk to him. You know, Quinn Hughes didn't speak after every game. That happened with captains in the past. And so I'm sorry. Yeah, I know. Horonik has spoke to the media a few times this season. And Wednesday night he was kind of, you know, I guess he was happy. I don't know. Sometimes the smugness I don't love. I don't care if he was good with the media or not. Is he a leader? Can he drag the team back in the fight? Are they hopping on his back and saying, let's go win this war, this fight, this battle? I don't care if he's a bad interview. The bottom line is you need to be dead sure with the guy. Because you are right on this. What they got to do is stop naming captains and trading them. Well, no, no. I mean, look, he asked that. Bowl or that. Captain traded.

37:43Sure. Quinn Hughes, captain traded. Sure. Stop trading captains. Sure. But I have no problem waiting at all. If you need to wait five years, wait five years. I don't think there's any, any, any, there's no issues with that for me. And leave it to the coaching staff. Don't, don't, don't put in here. I, you know, the coach knows best who to name captain. He's in that dressing room every day. Well, I would say he doesn't need advice from up high on who to name a captain. Oh, no doubt. Because while you know what happened. Oh, yeah, of course. But I, because they've also Rick, you know, one of the captains we haven't mentioned here. Because it's almost so forgettable. I was too. Remember, they made that, that was all the wrong reasons to what you're bringing up. They were, they named him captain to help him stay as a Vancouver. Can I, can I backfire? They probably did the same thing with Hughes. The huge same thing. Right. Hey, you're the captain. And he's not going to leave. He left. Exactly. Exactly. Uh, okay. Transitioning to Toronto. The big smoke. You're second home. You love that place. Ah, stop it. Toronto.

38:43It's a big night in Toronto. Mitch Mariner, Ontario boys returning home. Vegas Golden Knights in Toronto tonight to take on the Leafs. Last Thursday, the Leafs who were in Vegas, the Golden Knights came back and beat them. 6-5. Mariner had two points in that game. Something that we talked about Rick before the show. I have no idea on what planet this game is being played on a Friday night. This should be a hockey night in Canada game with a bullet. Big time. And I don't know. Big time. If they just don't care about Roger's opinion, Roger's media talking about the whole. It could have been Vegas. It doesn't matter. Stop. It could have been Vegas who said we want a road trip. You got to take into consideration what Vegas wants. It's their team. No. The NHL needs to take in four games of five nights. The NHL, Rick, needs to market their games better. And this is one of those examples. And even the game in Vegas, it was a Thursday night. It was only on regional TV. Yeah. It wasn't even on national TV at least tonight's day. This is Saturday night. This broadcast naturally is Saturday night hockey.

39:44And I'm sorry to a lesser extent. GT Miller coming here earlier this year. It was a Tuesday night. Yeah. That should be a Saturday night game too. The league drops the ball with marketing. This should be... And you know what else makes this really bad too? Yeah, but you think about markets that don't need to sell tickets. No. The league's not sitting there again. Absolutely. Oh boy. We better get Mitch in Saturday because the Leafs can't sell out. They sell out every game. It's not about selling tickets if you're hockey night in Canada. It's about having the most marquee games. If you look at any other sport, Luca Doncic is going back to Dallas on a big game. He's not going there on a Tuesday night where nobody cares about the game. Right? These other leagues have figured it out. The NHL is the only one that doesn't. And by the way to add insult to injury here, Vegas is coming off a back-to-back. They played last night in Boston. Yeah. Like, why? Now, at least Mariner did speak to the media this morning. I thought he was going to be able to get duck it because it is the back to the back. But he did speak to the media this morning. Yeah. I don't know. I don't know. The NHL just gets in their own way too many times with marketing.

40:45Yeah. And this is one of those incidents. A Friday night makes no sense whatsoever at all. Right. And I mentioned the JT Mother thing as well. Again, I know it's a lesser extent. But I just don't understand this. We should mention, by the way, our good pal, Elliott Freeman has an unbelievable article. Looking back on Mitchell Mariner's time, complex time in Toronto and all the instances about how it went bad there. That's on SportsNet. It's a really good article by Freeman. I gotta give him a ton of credit on that. One guy that's hurting heading into tonight's game, Rick. Oh, is the head coach of the Maple Leaf? Tough guy. Craig Baroube. He met with the meat. Look at this. What's this from? He met with the media this morning and it had on. And the bad guy. So people were going, oh, what's going on? It's a gym injury apparently. He suffered. That's a big. Yeah. So for those of you on the podcast. What are you doing with the gym? I've been a Trevor Linden's gym. And I don't come out of the gym looking like this. I wish you did. I would. He probably just dropped a weight on his head or something. Yeah. Yeah. Well, why are you dropping a weight? The only way you can drop a weight is if you're doing the bench press, right?

41:46Well, I'm not sure. But there's no way you're lifting a weight over your head like that. That's a bench press. Well, that's probably what he was doing. But look at the way the stitches go. Like what the hell? It's like a V. It was you on the podcast. That's a look it up. But it's like a V. And the black guy. Yeah. I don't come out of the gym looking like this. Wow. Yeah, but Quinn's right. If it's weights, if a weight drops on you, it's going to do something. I don't know. I don't. That's why I'm turning to Quinn. No. He's buffing. Look at him. He's in perfect shape. Could have hit his head on the locker in the locker room. Could have done that. Rick could look at him. What are you talking about? Hey, there's lockers that are lower lockers and higher lockers. Have you been down into a lower locker in the other ones open? And you go like. Yeah. That's a possibility. That's not. If you hit a corner of a locker, it could do. Maybe not like that. Maybe not like that. But did he give us a reason why he's like, no, he just said it was a gym incident. This is one of the toughest guys in the NHL ever. This makes him look tougher. And played in New West at Queens Park. We're Cliff Rodding. And I always forget the other guy on the line.

And now he's interviewing for head coaching position. Well, be careful. You know what the owner did to the old coach here. Yeah, but I mean, I know he kind of. The way the press conference went with Terry Pagula this week was not good. But Sean McDermick getting fired to me wasn't some like massive like, oh my goodness thing. I'm sorry. You were near the head coach. Your team continuously underperforms. It's not necessarily his fault, right? Because he's not a player. He's not making some of the mistakes they're making.

47:49Eventually you're going to pay the price. Wow. You can't fire all the players. You can only fire the coach. And so kind of understood it. But anyway, Phillip Rivers might be heading to Buffalo is their head coach. That would be an interesting one year. In terms of a career resume for Phillip Rivers. Okay, second one here quickly. Big head hockey. How about this Quinn Hughes breaking records in Minnesota? Most career three assist games from a defenseman in franchise history. Okay, franchise history. Quinn Hughes has four of those games now. Three assist games. He's got four of them since he arrived in Minnesota. He's one off the lead. He's got 24 points in 20 games in Minnesota. I think he's average in 28 minutes a game. Yeah. I don't know what he was doing in Vancouver. Well, and his assist last night. Yes. Guess why? They're the third best team in hockey. No doubt. Why? And he's not the captain. To be honest, I'm not even joking there. I think that also plays into it. His assist last night, Derek, if you have that this play here. I mean, this is vintage Quinn Hughes. Just walks Patrick Kane at the blue line. Tees up a shot. And the rebound end up going in here to tie the game at 2-2.

48:50The wild won by the way and over time against the red rings. It was a really entertaining game. They won four three. But again, I mean, we saw that a million times from Quinn Hughes. He gets the blue line. He does this thing. And, you know, he makes Patrick Kane. Who's a Hall of Famer with a bullet looks good. Minnesota is going to send Vancouver Christmas card every year. Say thank you. Thank you. Thank you for that. Yeah. And you know what? By the way, that's a whole other topic. What? The fact they might get out in the first round. So we'll talk about this crazy road you've been on for the last year and a second. But first of all, your team goes into Edmonton last night. Big six to win over the orders. What did you think of your team's performance last night to get the W? Yeah, it was great. Great to go in there on a back to back and get the two points. I think overall, our whole road trip so far has been pretty good. And yeah, just looking there. Keep going. Go in here. I think the penguins have surprised a lot of people so far this year. Ben, I think a lot of people thought it might be a rebuilding year or turn over year. And you guys are in a playoff spot. You're right there. What has been the keys to success for your team this season? Yeah, obviously, I think we have a lot of high expectations,

51:51regardless of what was being set outside of the room. We always believed in ourselves. So I got just the biggest thing is having that belief. And I mean, we've been playing as a team and we got a lot of guys, different guys contributing. So it's been great so far. Hey, Ben, you go 11th overall to the penguins. Okay. Not many 18-year-olds in the National Hockey League. Big boy, oh boy. Talk about the Calgary Hitman Western Hockey League one year, Pittsburgh Penguins. The next year, talk about that big, big, big jump. Yeah, for sure. I mean, it's obviously been a whirlwind since the draft. And I think obviously it's a big jump. But there's a Justin period. But I think just trying to get told in since the early year. And just keep building on that. What was your holy smokes? I'm in the NHL moment. Yeah, I think for me was probably my first game at MFC in New York.

52:59It was pretty cool. Getting to just be out there in the. One of the most historic drinks in the league. And I think that was a pretty cool from the moment to me. And definitely a welcome welcome to the league moment. How is it being around Sydney Crosby every day? I mean, just that that and learning from a guy like that. Yeah, I think it's it's so important. Just being able to watch him day in day out. I think it's a goal and opportunity for me as the under player just to be able to watch some of these. Legends that we have here right now. I'm just kind of kind of watch how they are at practice and. And just how they've been doing for so long and. Yeah, all their habits and all that stuff. So it's definitely a cool enough opportunity for myself. Well, I'm old enough to tell you that I interviewed your dad many times when he played for the 86ers as one guard.

54:00You come from an amazing soccer family. How did you get out of the soccer into hockey? Yeah, I think I mean, obviously a big hockey family. I played myself until about 16, but I always knew hockey was what I was passionate about. And my dad is a big hockey fan. So he was always supportive of me. So yeah, it's it's one of those things where I always knew hockey with it. Do you have a do you have the what am I trying to say here? Do you have the edge in the pre game soccer game though, Ben, when it comes to you and your teammates? A little bit. We have a we have a few good players, but definitely helps before games for sure. Richard Spencer, you're welcome to the NHL moment. But with the whirlwind over the past calendar year, you go from the dub and Calgary to now transitioning to the NHL. Have you had a moment to catch your breath, especially with this condensed schedule in the NHL this year?

55:02Yeah, obviously, I mean, the schedule has been jammed back this year and it's been a very busy year so far. I think getting to go home for Christmas break was definitely just a moment to kind of reset after the first half of the year was done. We got a Olympic break coming up now, so hopefully another chance to reset them. But yeah, it's been a it's been a crazy schedule. It's been a lot of games. Been really busy. So it's yeah, it's hard to take a moment just to take it all in. I read you looked up to Brendan Gallagher. I think you were a Canadian's fan. Ben as a as a youngster. What was it with Brendan's game that you were you were looking up to? Yeah, I think for me just going up and then watching, I mean, he's obviously grew up in Vancouver as well, but watching just his compete and work ethic. I think really junior to him early on and I was eager to have a house and help as well, but I just just love this game for me on age.

56:11Ben, you win 11th to Pittsburgh. The conox had the 15th overall pick. Was your was your party? You on draft a saying, hey, would love to go to the conox? Yeah, I think obviously knowing they were picking around that time. It would have been something that you're thinking about before the draft. It would be a cool thing to get drafted to your hometown team, but I mean, I've been nothing but grateful for the penguins taking me and I think it's the best thing that's happened. But yeah, it's definitely going to cost you mine, but I'm I'm very happy right now. How many family and friends Sunday in Roger's arena? Quite a few. I think I don't know the number of my mom would probably know she was doing all the tracking of that and taking that, but yeah, I think there's going to be a lot of people there. And make your agent pay. Don't give him a free ticket. I know your agent. Don't give him a freebie. Make him pay.

Any coaches or mentors you want to give a shout out to that have that helped you get to the point you're at now? Yeah, I think obviously so many different coaches that you go through the years, I think, just in general. I spent a lot of time with the brand winner club back here. So I didn't got that was one of the biggest things for developing me as a player and a person. So probably should out to the to the winner club, for sure. Well, the best to you, Ben, great story. He moved a really amazing article on sportsnet.ca talking about Ben's relationship with 11 year old Catherine Hasky. I hope I'm saying that correct. Ben and Catherine developed a relationship when Ben was playing for the Calgary Hitman last year. Catherine is down syndrome. And so she's part of a hockey program that the Hitmen are also involved with. And so Ben and her just formed this relationship and the story is really, really well written and told by Eric Francis. And it shows what kind of a kid Ben Kindle is. And so if you have time this weekend or tonight or whatever you're here in this, read that article by Eric Francis. It just gives you a light into just such an impressive 18 year old to be doing something like that. And again, you you brought it up. All those stars still in Pittsburgh and he's fitting into that lineup. And to transfer from the Western league to the NHL is you don't know how hard it is.

59:18Yes. And this kid to be playing in the NHL year, all your hockey senses through the roof. Incredible hockey sense. He had 99 points in his last year with the Calgary Hitman of the West. If Pittsburgh didn't take him at 11, the canucks could have got him at 15. Well, and I touched on it there. Not only are you the swing to get into the NHL, but you're coming into the NHL in a year where there's a condensed schedule like it is this year with the Olympics coming up. So a sister is a really good soccer player with the Canadian national program on dad played soccer. Yeah, I interviewed the dad many times this one guy Steve. Great interview. Good guy. 1:01:28Studio analysts for the Sabers on MSG and also NHL analyst on TSN, Marty Biron back on the program. Marty, thanks for doing this. How are you? I am doing great. Lots of snow in Western New York and Buffalo the last few days. I don't know what it's looking like with you guys on the west coast, but if you need snow, I'll ship it to you. Oh, it's snow. It's sunny and cold here, Marty. But yeah, apparently it's just snowmageddon sweeping across that area the last little while. And not only us like I was in Nashville at the beginning of the week and they said they're expecting like six to 12 inches of snow. Maybe Saturday and they got a game Saturday night and it also obviously it's it's going to be interesting. And I mean, if I not mistaken, I don't know they're playing Saturday night, but I think it's Seattle, maybe. So I'm thinking like this game, depending on how it goes, it may be in jeopardy of being more, but that whole, oh, he's coast is being a mess right now.

1:02:30Let's talk about the team you follow closest first here, Marty, the Buffalo Sabers, they go into Montreal last night, they beat the Canadians 4-2, 4-1-1 in the last six games. Currently in the first wildcard spot, the Sabers, they move on from Kevin Adams. They had a long winning streak that started the season. People saying, is this same old same old? What's happened with the Sabers this season? Well, I mean, I get that a lot of people will look to the change of general manager, but when they let go of Kevin Adams, it's funny because they had one three games on the road. It was the first three games of their 10 game winning streak. I think that, you know, being healthy really helped a lot when Josh Norris came back and made a big difference. He's hurt again, but I feel like now they're better equipped to handle his loss, and it has been really good. So after the 10 game winning streak, where they only gave up 18 goals in those 10 games, by the way, 1.8 goals against is the key. Like you play well defensively, you get good goal-tending. It wasn't just uco-pico-lucanin, it wasn't just Alex Lyon, you know, it was everybody. It was Colton Ellis as well that got to play some games.

1:03:38And so you were, you had three goalies going in there having success, but then they lost to Columbus. So they went 10 in a row, they lost to Columbus, and then it was like, okay, what are they going to do? Are they going to respond? And they responded since the Columbus loss going 7, 2 and 1. And there was a couple of heartbreaking loss to add a 2-1 loss to Carolina on Monday. And you're like, how is that going to play out while they beat Nashville, they beat Montreal, like they have really responded to adversity well. And I think that is a product of Lindy Roth for the last year and a half has been really saying, we need to play a mature game. We can't turn a puck over. And now over the last 21 games, he's not talked about puck management at all. He's actually been praising the guys for making the right decisions. Don't put it in when you have nothing, chipping it out of the zone when you have nothing and not forcing anything. And it has made a big difference. So I think that it's become a mature game with the Sabers and everybody's taking part of it.

1:04:42Martin, that's your damp go was hurt two weeks ago in Toronto tomorrow. They still haven't come up told us what's going on. It looks like they're going to shut them down for the rest of the year. Well, what are your thoughts when you think a damp go in another injury? It's troublesome. Look, I mean, luckily for me, I was never a guy that got to deal with a lot of injuries, but I've seen a lot of my teammates dealing with injuries, right? That it could be like knee or hips or ankles or shoulders or concussions, like everybody's got their own adversity when it comes to injuries. But when I look at tetrademco right now, what was a very kind of nothing play in the playoffs against Nashville, he goes reverse VH and all of a sudden it became this huge ordeal that missed so much time. And as has been kind of the waiting for the other shooter drop because he has had injuries from the time he was in college right with the hips and everything. So, so to me that's troublesome. Like the Vancouver connox are never going to be a playoff team or a team that's going to go in the right direction.

1:05:50If they can't find a number one gold tender and they have one and they've extended that gold tender on a contract extension for a lot of money. But you know what, if he's not healthy, you're always starting back to the first square, right? It's like, no, we're going back to square one and we're so that's why it's hard, it's hard for Adam foot. It's hard for Patrick Alveen and everybody to know that while you can't move forward until you have a definitive answer on tetrademco and it's not just for the season, it's for the future. So, I mean, this is why it's going to be hard for the connox to make a decision because you have a guy that could be a top five goalie in the NHL, top five, top 10. But if he's injured, he's putting your organization in a bad place. Martin, the connox are going into a rebuild. You've been watching what in Buffalo, what advice would you have for connox fans? Some of these rebuilds are five, six, seven, nine, ten years.

1:06:53Yeah, I think my advice would be, don't think it's going to happen in, you know, in so time or whatever, it may be one, it may be two or maybe three rebuilds in a row. I think the biggest thing when I look at the Buffalo Sabers and the way that they tried their rebuilds over the many, many years is they tried to go young and they tried to say, hey, let's grow this team together with young talent, you know, but young doesn't, doesn't cut it. Young is good, but you need experience, you need veteran guys, you know, and they, you know, you look at this group of Sabers, they added Alex stock, he was young, but a little older than the rest of them, right? He was older than the Dallin and and the Taj Thompson and whatever, then they added Ryan McLeod and then they added Jason Zucker. They've looked at veterans to come in and to play a big role now over the last couple of years, but again, I'll go back to when you give up only 18 goals in 10 games, you're going to win a lot of games.

1:07:57And now maybe Luke and then is looking like a number one gold tender, the way that he did two years ago, so it starts a net, but I do feel that you need to add experience with the youth. It's not just, oh, this young team is going to grow up to be something. Well, who's going to teach him that who's going to teach if you're in a rebuild the young guys, what you're supposed to do at practice, how you're supposed to handle yourself, how you win close game, how you win games down the stretch. To make the playoffs, you need older players to be able to help you do that. Yeah, Marty, we haven't talked to you since the Canadian Olympic roster dropped and of course, specifically the gold tenders. Do you expect Jordan Bennington to be the starter and if so, what kind of leash do you think will be on Jordan Bennington at the tournament? Well, a month ago, I would have said and I've told everybody, no, for me, it's Logan Thompson, that starts game one with potentially Bennington as their backup, but I, it's only because of the experience.

1:08:57If I had to put them one, two, three, I was putting Thompson, Kemper and Jordan Bennington. Now, I mean, you guys saw it, right Vancouver, just beat Washington and you look at Logan Thompson, you're like, there's something over the last month that is not there with the Washington capital. That's not there with Logan Thompson. Darcy Kemper is a little banged up now in LA and who knows where that's going to go. So, and no one John Cooper and knowing how he always goes with the guys that have won him something that he trust. Now I'm really leaning on Jordan Bennington for game one at the Olympics because that is probably the way John Cooper was going to go anyway. And because, you know, Logan Thompson has not played as well. Along of a leash, is he going to get this is interesting because the way that the 12 teams right at the Olympics are laid out. The top four, advanced to the quarterfinal, the other eight are playing a one game in to get into the quarter. So, so you can, you're not going to get eliminated if all of a sudden it took you a little longer to find the right recipe.

1:10:05So, if you really feel like Jordan Bennington as your guy, you give him a game. Maybe you give him a second game, but if it doesn't work, you've got to make a quick decision. And that is where Canada is going to struggle. If they don't make the right decision from the get go, you may not get anybody to get into a rhythm and be able to lead you. But again, I mean, you look at the group of forward team Canada, they're stacked right. And on the back end, they're stacked too. So, I don't really know that it's going to matter early on. So, maybe they can get by early on and we'll see when it comes to the quarters in semi. What happens with team Canada? Do you have a snow blower, Marty? Yes, I have a plow on my pickup truck when I was when I was gone. So, I left Monday morning. I came back Wednesday later in the day from Nashville. So, I told my 19-year-old daughter who for the last two years, she was at a barn in New Hampshire. And, you know, they got a ton of snow in New Hampshire and she was helping plowing and doing stuff over there and writing and competing.

1:11:09So, she's like, Dad, I can do it. I'm like, OK, let me just say this. Like, I'm going to put the plow on. And she did it on Monday. She did it on Tuesday. When I came back Wednesday, it was cleared. It was good. She did a great job. So, I think I've grown from a business of one driver to now potentially two drivers, which I'm growing my plowing business, which is not, it's one driveway. It's my house. So, that's all it is. Oh, Marty, you never know. Another revenue stream in the house. Keep that tall. I'm like Darren Drager and all my buddies at CSN because they got a lot of snow in Toronto. I'll come up. You made a gas. I'll come up. And they all declined. They also actually offered it to Alex Stocks. So, usually I don't go on the road. We do studio work in Buffalo. But a few games we have to. So, I saw Alex Stock like before Christmas break and we were going to get some snow. And I'm like, Hey, Tucky, he lives like five minutes down the road. If you need, you know, plant, tell your wife, text me, whatever. I can come by help. And he goes, Nope. I don't trust you. So, that's what happened. Awesome. Awesome.
