Jake Irvin had a solid first half in the 2024 season with the Nationals, posting a 3.49 earn run average over 1. 116 innings. Things fell apart after the All-Star break though, with a 5.90 mark that carried into a rough 2025 year at 5.70. Now in spring training, the big right-hander is turning heads and fighting for a rotation spot. Earlier this week, Irvin impressed in a start against the Cardinals, averaging just 92 miles per hour on his fastball. His velocity is not bounced back to mid 90s levels from before, but sharper command and a true 6-pitch mix are making up for it. He is throwing quality strikes and keeping hitters off balance. Fans and scouts are buzzing about his mound presence and funky release. A deeper arsenal means he does not need a lead heat to succeed, and it is showing in his unpredictability.

Irvin racked up 15 strikeouts in just 13.1 innings this spring, way better than last year's 9 and 16.1. He bumped up usage on his cutter to 14%, change up to 12% and slider to 9%, compared to barely using them before. Still, he is on a short leash with plenty of competition like Andrew Alvarez, Mitchell Parker, and Josiah Gray waiting in triple A. The new regime has already optioned Parker, proving they will make moves. If Irvin pitches like this in the regular season, he locks in, but the pressure is real this time around.
