Italy Buys Caravaggio Masterpiece for €30M

The work is a portrait of Monsignor Maffel Barberini, who later became Pope Urban the 8th. The piece had stayed hidden in a private foreign's collection until it went on public view in Rome this year. Now it's heading straight into the national collection to keep it from foreign buyers. Other minister Alessandro Giulie hailed the buy as a major win for Italy's heritage. He stressed it's part of a push to secure key artworks for everyone, not just wealthy collectors. The painting has already moved to Palazzo Barberini in Rome, the historic family palace of its subject. There, it'll hang alongside other caravaggio masterpieces for visitors to see. Barberini ruled as Pope from 1623 until his death in 1644 and loved supporting artists. The caravaggio himself mastered dramatic light and shadow before dying at just 38.
