Iowa Everywhere — Instant Iowa State: Cyclones beat SEMO in Week 1. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
Man, it has been a long, long off season. Man, it felt good. Man, it felt good to have winning football back for the Iowa State Cyclones. Matt VW, Ben Bruns here with Instant Iowa State. It's our first show, man. It's exciting. You've been doing Cyclone Sunday with Aiden Wyatt for a while, but this is our first time kicking off Instant Iowa State right after CF goes live with their instant reaction with Chris Williams, Julian Nelson. Man, Bruns it. You are at the stadium. We can see it right behind you. You are at the stadium. Give me your very first thoughts of Iowa State's one and no start in the Jimmy Rogers era. Matt, a little bit surreal. And I say that in a way that we've known the Matt Campbell era for so long. And to imagine Jimmy Rogers coming in in the shadow of Matt's greatness, but in the absolute tumultuous way of entering this arena, that's not easy.
And Jimmy Rogers is not a flashy guy. He, his staff aren't a bunch of flashy guys. They, they, but what they gave us today, and I, you know, Cyclone Nation had no idea what was coming on a super hot weather delayed game. You know, less, less well attended than other games that we've had in the last 10 years. And you know, it all makes sense. But at the same time, it also is just a moment for us to say, what is the new normal at Iowa State? The landscape of college football has changed so much. And we've seen it here more than most places. And so, you know, the Iowa State football team we know and love is playing football right now in Happy Valley. And it's crazy. And it feels, I mean, I don't know how you feel about it.
I don't like it. I don't like it one bit. And, but that doesn't matter because that's the landscape. And so what does matter is what happened out on this field today. Those are really well coach football team that we saw for Iowa State today. I'm not saying they're going to win the Super Bowl. I'm not going to go say they're going to win in Iowa City next week. But I'll tell you this, those guys know their job and they know what's expected and they delivered. And in a really hot circumstance where, you know, a lot of us to stay through this whole thing, especially when you're pulling away after the first half, that takes a unique individual. And, you know, here I am out in the parking lot afterward. And it's really good, man. It's really good.
Like, if you want to have a sense of respect for the dignity that is Jimmy Rogers football that I was staying, that's all I wanted out of this game. Can we be a dig in a fight? Can we go play extraordinarily hard? And we were more skilled than I thought we could be. And we were more physical and we were faster and we were better in every aspect of the game than I thought we would be. And so, you know, you look at that and like, I don't know what the, I don't know where the future is for this team. Yeah. But I do know that it was a proud day to be a cyclone. A lot of unknowns for sure. A 38 to 10 win for Iowa State over SEMO and week one to kick off the Jimmy Rogers era. We got a ton to get into. We got Chris Williams is going to hop on with us here in just a minute. We want to, of course, thank our sponsor, Fairway, Meet & Grocery. We'll hear a word from them and we'll get right back to Instant Iowa State. From tailgating to afterschool snacks, Fairway has everything that my entire family needs.
Same. Unbelievable. Game day reaction starts now. This is Instant Iowa State exclusively on Iowa everywhere presented by Fairway Meet & Grocery. Oh, what's up everyone? Welcome back to Instant Iowa State. Matt Van Winkle in the All American. The All American man. Ben Bruns joining us live from up here. Many moves to go brother. Yeah, many moons. Yeah, how does that, how it, okay, let's start there. We start the game in a weather delay. How fitting is it that we start the game in a regular weather delay to kick off the Jimmy Rogers era? Cycle weather. Cycle and weather alert. We're going to bring in Chris Williams now too, because I know Chris was there, helping the press box.
Heed up. Welcome into Instant Iowa State, man. Look at that chin. Holy cow. What's up buddy? What are you doing? Good. I'm nice and I'm in the air conditioning all day. I don't. You're rocking a quarter zip. Geez. It's actually quite chilly up here in the press box. It's not even going to lie. It's frozen out. It was a, I echo a lot of what Ben said. I just, Ben, I thought, like to me today's game, I don't know if you, I thought you said, well, like I don't know what this actually means for like the ceiling. But I do know that if you come out and you struggle against SEMO, then that can tell you a little bit about the floor. And that was, you know, you, you, you, one point two yards per carry. SEMO got six sacks, three turnovers, only four penalties. Those are the things that I was looking for today. And I think there's a lot of stuff we can pick apart.
I want to get your thoughts on the offensive line specifically. But yeah, I just, I do, was it in the stadium? Because they've been doing that three through five thing, but seemingly forever. And it, there is a crazy part of like what a sack can do for the feeling of a stadium. And that was really cool today. It felt like they were playing a different sport on defense. And you got one on the very first, you got one on the very first defensive possession from Torel, which is huge. I think how many times do we bring pressure? Do we, do we bring pressure eight times in this game? Maybe nine. And when we brought pressure five or six of those got home. Like, yeah, that is an epic differentiation from what we saw under Matt and with that system. And, you know, John, he got as an absolute wizard. We've talked about this, right? Like he's amazing. But this is a really good defense that knows their gaps. They know their assignments.
They know what, what, when there's motion, how are they going to react? How are they going to roll? What are they going to do? And when they bring pressure, they got home. And, and like how many times did we bring pressure under the Hikake era and didn't get home? And now you're exposed to big plays or first downs, you know, third and medium, third and long. What was the conversion percentage, Maddie, man, winks? Like, I don't know what it was. But it was not high for C-Mode today. We're going to, look, we're going to play lots better football teams. But, you know, the reality is third and medium, third and long was an absolute nightmare for Iowa State. For the last eight years, it was not today. And again, you're going to dominate C-Mode. What happens next week in Iowa City, right? Like, a whole different ball game, whatever. But I just love the fact that when we brought pressure, it was a fact.
No doubt. I, um, I loved watching them fly around. My, my, my biggest question been, the rain or thing was really interesting to watch that progress throughout the game. Because, I, it's kind of what I expect from him. Right? Like, I was getting a lot of social media like, oh, this guy sucks, he can't throw when he was like one person. But that, that's not really what Jalen Rainer is. And go back and watch that game. Iowa State played against him last year. It's when he starts to extend plays. And, and you don't, the thing about when you're playing C-Mode, you don't have to do a lot of that. Right? So like, I actually, in a weird way, I'm a little bit encouraged by, he's eight for 16 today. Rainer goes, uh, he had four touchdowns, two passing touchdowns, a couple on the ground. But he kept, he kept coming back and he would make, just when you're starting to think, oh, this guy sucks, then he would hit a guy and stride. And it looked really good, right?
Yeah. Yeah. So, I mean, I'm a little confused, but I, I think that's the guy I thought Iowa State was getting. Like, I don't, I don't feel much different about him. What I'm curious about, I want your perspective on the offensive line because you have all these new guys out there. They played like 10 guys in the first 10 series, or the first 10 series. Right. And I think I've learned enough from your analysis over the years that like, it's, it's kind of hard to just throw all these new guys together like that and expect them to be perfect. So like, I get it in like 3.5 yards per carry, it gets Seymouth's not good enough. And I don't think anyone in that room would agree with that. Sure. But, I also think that that group based on the bodies that they have and the money that they've spent up front. I think you could see a pretty significant jump from week one to week two. Well, and I agree with you, C-Dub. And, you know, my perspective coming into this, it was so funny as I was leading into this game. I'm like, okay, how do I get to know this team? I don't have the, like, I've not been around them the way I've been around teams in the past.
And so, for me, it was like, where did they come from? What's the start? Like, who are these guys? It didn't matter. None of it actually mattered. What mattered was the guys were had on a hat in position. That was the best execution of an offensive performance from an Iowa State offensive line. That I can remember in recent history. And like, that's not to say that we're where we need to be. And that's not to say these guys individually are, you know, better than the guys that played before them. Or they're better coached or whatever. But I'll tell you this, when protection was happening, we didn't have some big breakdown because of a mental error in protection. You know, we were one guy away from an elite offensive line last year, but we didn't have that. And so, we had breakdowns, we had mistakes, and we had things that, you know, you have to try and polish when you come on a show like this. And the reality today was, that's a really well coached unit.
As the super mature, we had an 80 yard run get called back on a phantom holding call that I can't. That was horrible. Well, and that's the thing to guys in position. So, but what about the stats? Look, if you got an 80 yard run, that's what I was going to say. There you go. All the sudden you're over five yards per carry. And the other thing I would point out too is that second half is going to skew stats probably both ways because it's basically a scrimmage at this point. And I would guess, and I didn't, I wasn't charting this, I will when I watch it back. I would guess that I would state subbing in the second half specifically up front on the offensive line was exponential. It looked to me been like they were constantly won because of the heat, right? It's 100 degrees out there. You want to keep guys fresh. But two, I just on the Cyclone Phenatic Show, I'm a race guy, right?
I'm an auto racing's my background, but we'll go out and we hot lap and then we'll qualify and then we'll go to our heat race. And we change something little on the car every time because you're trying to find just that extra edge. And I'm guessing that a lot of what we saw in the second half was Tyler Roll and that offensive line group. Okay, we're going to put this guy out there. You see it on defense all the time. We're going to bring this rush in on third long, right? We just got to remember that offensive line is so new and there's just all these pieces that have never been out there before. And it's different when you have a different look of another team. So that's where it's just like week one. You just really have to keep your expectations and just level it out. And we'll see. We're going to learn a lot more next week. I think about that group. Fairway, meet and grocery presenting instant Iowa State for our first year doing this live reaction. It's pretty cool. I've been out in the the the lots to you're up in the press box. I'm at Can Bond or am put. Yeah, runs and runs. Drinking a nice cold beer.
That's the first thing was first time you do street coffee and that was pretty cool. Yeah, I didn't take long to warm it up right now. I would imagine a lot of it. It's a cozy. So we've talked about a lot of the the the good in this game so far. Let's talk about some of the bad though. I was waiting for our muffs upon early in the game. We have a we have another new sponsor on the show. It's it's premier junk removers. Brunnie. Premier junk removers. If you need something a hall the way like everyone needs. That's a good company. Right. Yeah. Premier junk removers is your is your company five one five seven seven eight two eight eight nine premier junk removers serving the central Iowa area. I know that I saw they were just up in Ames too. They were hauling some stuff on your Jack Dry Stadium. So I saw a picture on their Facebook page. So if you need something from premier junk removers. Give them a call today. But I'm going to I'm going to I'm going to toss that play out the the muff punt because Adam Flora comes back and has a pretty dang good game. I know we left the game. And if you got banged up on that pun or turn Williams. I don't know if he came back out. I think he did. So I think it was cramps because he came back.
Yeah. Are you talking about in the first half? No second. I think it's a second half. It's like a second half. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So he went down on the punt return and then and I'm positive it was a cramp. And then I tweeted keep Flora out of the damn game. Put him in front of a fan and give him some water. And then they put him back in and he went down with a cramp again. So I'm 99% sure because there was like one trainer and they were just doing the little push thing on the heel. So I'm almost positive that I'm tossing that muff punt out because he came back and had a really nice return that set up the. The Benetti touchdown his Benetti's for that's a good story to a former D lineman turned tight and got his first catch as a touchdown as a cyclone. That was pretty cool. But Aiden Flora you know it came back and I think it was in the second half came back with the with the touchdown as well. But the real game overall for him. Yeah for sure. And the real premier junk removal was the fact that Iowa State's defense went back out on the field and forced a field goal that was then missed.
Right and the Aiden comes back out and he returns a punt you know 30 plus yards so you know look you're going to make mistakes right and and I go back to last year three times last year we saw a punt hit a guy who was blocking somebody in put return. I've never seen anything like that in my life happened twice in a season much less three times. Horrendous none of that in this game right and so yes we make a mistake like you're going to have moments where you as a player have to make a play and you make a mistake. And some of those are more visible than others right when you're off into lineman sometimes that mistake ends up for a minus yard play and nobody ever knows that it was you. When you're a florida that's hard right because you're returning that kick and everybody saw you muffin right and now the pressures on you to go do that thing the next time when you're kicker it's really difficult because all that pressure is square on your shoulders.
But answering the bell and like come into the tape and getting it done is how you remove the junk and so that that was some really good stuff today. Williams I want to get your take to just from on the running game itself we did see quite a bit of flora pet away obviously that the big round that that got called back but you kind of mentioned it earlier three and a half yards per carry 108 yards on the ground. I know you want to see a little bit more out of that group is that is that position concerning for you this year obviously rainer picked up 32 yards as well and a couple touchdowns on the ground but as a whole do you want to see that group take a take a leap this year. Do you think it is kind of is what it is. I don't know I it's hard telling with pet away he looks really small but we saw make a huge play you know and I don't I don't think pet away is going to be a guy that you're trying to run in between the tackles a lot but I love flora my biggest thing is just keeping those guys healthy and it was a cold reminder of that watching aid and go down on that punt return because I'm all about it like I've said a million times his punt return at T. C. last year was one of the most electric plays and I was state history it was so good.
And I think the way they're going to have to play in win games that you have to do it like I mean it didn't turn out a huge deal in this game but that pot return he made today could win or lose some games down the stretch for this team they've got to find the hidden yardage. I think if those two guys are healthy I'm okay with it I just I don't know what's behind them now it's going to help if river peppers can come back in a couple of weeks I'll believe it when I see it coming back from the keelies that quickly. I mean that's some bin bronze type test tostroin if that kid can do not confuse me for an athlete okay like let's not talk let's not speak in those terms but I again if those two guys are your backs I'm okay with it beyond that I think it's pretty slim pickens the we'll see I don't know enough about the barons from Tulane I haven't seen him play enough I think he's to Miller or should be fitting in exactly how he was today I love flora I think that he is special I think he's probably a year away development developmentally from being like the best version of what he can be but man he is you feel like every time he touches the ball like he can do something special and I also think I just I don't know that offense this is weird to say that offense was actually more explosive than I was.
I was more explosive and dynamic than I thought it would be today and I also felt like they hung they held on to a lot too so that's trying not to be too optimistic but like what about over be you know too big catches today so that was that you agree with me Ben you wanted to jump in there I do and here's what I love about it right so you know we've all watched the Eagles play great football for the last three years and you know you living I like new green bed and everybody like like the Eagles came in a green Bay and stomped the Green Bay Packers two years ago and there was a lot of blue in that place and you know that's that's where Tyler Roll has spent the last two years and you know second and 11 we run the ball for six like I love it I can't get enough of that right because I'm not going to get it. I'm not going to get it because it wasn't like we changed personnel group and went like lightweight to get space to run it we kept it tight and we had a full back like we're going to this this football team I was impressed with the situational coaching and the commitment to the different kinds of play action that it takes to not necessarily know where the ball is going.
I was really lined up in that triangle set when Rainer ran the quarterback counter for the touchdown and you know the defense had leverage in a lot of different areas when we lined up I don't love this right there were a bunch of guys in the box but what they weren't expecting was quarterback counter back the other way blocking perfectly and that's what they got and we got a 12 year touchdown so it's like you know and then you flip it to the opposite side of the ball and you think about the defense the defense always had leverage see dog Matt we didn't always make the plays but we always had leverage right we knew where the ball was going and we had leverage and so like you know the plays that you as a coach are like oh no are the plays where you don't have leverage and you should have because somebody didn't recognize something or you didn't see it that never happened in the scam.
And you talk about that on defense and this is my last point and I'm going to let you you guys do your thing but I just Terrell and Lamb on the defensive line is you want to talk about a duo like holy mac we're going to give we're going to give Terrell by the way our white cough heating and playing player of the game and we give him like three of those because he was funny you made me like to former cyclone Adam Carper was with me this morning and he's he's a pretty casual he's a big fan but he just does he like a lot of most fans here today doesn't know a lot of these players and he was like who should we watch for and I was and I was I told him I was like this Terrell kid Terrell I keep screwing it up I was like I think he's the best player on the team and he made me look good in front of Carper and his boys because he goes out there and he had three sacks he probably had three more if they would let him in the second half and great sat here and I don't know what it ended up with but the last cyclone to have two sacks in his debut in the uniform was
Rashon Parker in 2006 bronze blast from the past getting out of it anybody's ever had nobody's ever had three sacks in their debut yeah well so history today and and I would guess that he would give 99 a lot of credit for a lot of that too lining up beside that guy doesn't hurt so I saw crazy I saw a crazy stat from our guy Matthias who we're going to toss it to after this show on the after dark guys I was they had 14 sacks a season ago they had six today three from bottom I'm surprised they had 14 honestly not knowing it I'm just I'm surprised they had that many it just didn't I couldn't I don't even remember them because that's just they weren't trying to do it but again like I just you get this place full it's a night game West Virginia's in town big 12 and you rattle off four sacks like that keeps your momentum going and that like that helps so much and I think that that's one of the big things that they missed out on
by just not having that and and I I defended the three three five for a long time I didn't hate it if you look at their rush numbers with it like it work for the most part when they were healthy but again it is refreshing to just watch a defense go after a quarterback and like just played downhill and the last point I'm going to make and I'm going to get out of here fun to see Carson Willick drive in that system yeah hold over from the Campbell era had some injuries last year if you remember the Kansas State game was awesome last year yeah big time and he just got beat down we saw so many linebacker injuries last few years at Iowa State but Willick I want to say second on team and tackles yeah seven tackles two for loss yeah he looked great you can see I'm letting me thanks for letting me jump in I'm going to let Ben be the actual black expert here but this is a thing see that we should be in love and you guys good to see you then you're the best in the business man that's a damn good mustache so why why he hates it you know what my wife hated mine I had it I was rocking it for the Briarwood member guest and you know
had to shave it after we didn't play that well but you know all right you had a good game thanks see up well done appreciate you man all right you good you good with you good with given to all the white cough heating and cooling player the game I like that man and here's the other thing I would say I mean I thought lamb set up so many plays and like let's just dive into this for a second because the style of defense you play matters right and so I was state went from the 3 3 5 words basically you're squared up and you're playing a side of the field all the time and no matter where you were on the field you were on that side and then all of a sudden I was state now with this new scheme is playing field side and and and boundary side and so we're flipping around the defensive front based on how where the ball is placed and so lamb ends up to the field all the time as the as the field side defensive tackle so you're playing
from a 3 technique to a 4 or 5 technique and that kid man got after it like stuffing runs critical moments early in the game and he's going to play against an incredible the incredible offensive line next week right all these guys are so don't don't take anything to say you know are instant Iowa friends are going to have have a whole different view of this it's like we'll educate that after that game's done but I'll tell you what man I like the motor I like the leverage of the field I like understanding your gap I like understanding how once you've passed so that's one of the things that we were coach to do is offensive lineman back in my day if if a defensive lineman wants to maintain their gap really really really hard and you're running a zone scheme at them and like run to the sideline to maintain their gap you just take them there you wash them all the way down you take them to the moon right like we're going to run out of bounds we'll go to Omaha we have to and
not what this defensive line did today once they got leverage once they got to a certain spot if the pressure was continuing to come to try and reach across their face they leveraged up the field which is a which is a much more nuanced aspect of how to defend the zone run and it's and I and I sail this because it's going to become so that's the next week right I will run to run wide zone at you all day they want to hit that off tackle zone and and like make you stretch and widen and run to the sideline but when you can not only widen to maintain your gap but then also leverage up the field you got nothing as an offensive line there's penetration kills zone I was just really impressed with how this D line played physical wide and upfield in this game in a way that that in the linebackers filled gaps and and safe future in the right spots
yeah a lot of good stuff from the defense I mean it's it's early to say but I think you can pretty comfortably say that this defense they're going to have to have the defense play well to have a decent season this year I mean we saw good things from the offense I think you're going to see a lot of improvement from that group as well but this defense is as advertised man like coach bob it is you mentioned earlier he's got these guys coached up and a lot of these guys followed him over right like we talk about zero returning starters but a lot of these guys have continuity with the staff so yeah Bobby terrell gets our white coffee in cooling peace of mind player of the game white coffee in cooling white coffee comfort dot com it you need your AC run into the man I don't know what it's going to be like in Iowa City next week but it'll be terrible it'll be terrible that was so still that field is like the fact they replaced it with turf it will make it that much hotter it will be very very warm and you know here's what I love I was state was well conditioned I was taking into this game and did not have a lot of guys going down like we mentioned aton you know having some of that but yeah
most part this was it will not be worse conditions in Iowa City than what we saw today but it's a rival game and the intensity level ratchets way way up and so I think the exciting part for Iowa State is man what do we what do these guys have to lose yeah yeah nothing this is yeah instant Iowa State presented by fairway meet and grocery mavi winkle Ben Bruns up in aims that he was at the game got a first hand account Ben we saw one of the best plays I think that ever happened to Jack Troy stadium I think I think you could put it up there in the top top five top ten for sure yeah but bending to goy is going to get our mighty and fired up play of the game so Jake Brennan contributor on Iowa ever calm Iowa everywhere a psycho fanatic dot com I should say was shooting highlights on the silent on the sideline got this incredible video I'm going to play this for you I just want me to I'm going to play it first and then I want to get your thoughts on this play real quick here's
Benning to goy insane one handed grab just what was like in the stadium everyone in the stadium know that that was a bit like there were some questions on the broadcast if he actually pulled it in and then they slow it down and he literally go I mean I don't know if you've seen the wingspan on this guy there's a lot of wide receivers who can't make that play and don't consistently make that play and for Benning to make that play especially after the year they had last year you know Benny played a lot of snaps for Iowa State last year and and struggle the times especially in the kicker turn game right we talked about the point game two of those punts that I mentioned hit him right and again the guys do things he was coached to do so like I'm not saying that he made though like he was coached to do those things last year he made story of a kid man like oh my gosh so cool and for him to be the one one of the guys you stayed yes and to make that play that is so big time and it was a huge momentum shift in the game right because yeah like this
probably was not in question but you don't ever want to get close and for me to come up with that play and then I would say punches it right in as sick fabulous for him absolutely and say I kind of forgot about like that he was he had made some of those special teams wonders he reminded me of that but man for a guy like for a guy to stick with it and again not a lot of people like he's just trying to block his guy he's trying to do his job but the problem is he was coached to do his job too long and so it's like you know it what a devastating thing to come back from and you know I got some harsh feedback from coaches early in my career too amazing young guy but look at the tools six four two hundred plus pounds his corner like he and to make a play like that that's a guy I'm super proud that I was in an Iowa State uniform thank goodness for that play for him yeah super highly recruited guys look at look at the look on
coach Rogers to he knows like he's like he got that like they're going to obviously they were going to review but that was just wow that that'll be a play you remember that's a that's a that's a statement play right that's a statement play for that guy who who's going to we're going to need him this year me and like you're going to you're going to get picked on right like there's some come out of the players in this in the big 12 man there they're going to go after him and they see this tape oh boy oh boy so that's that's going to be our mighty M fired up play of the game mighty M great local Iowa company pressure washers generators inverters we've actually runs we've got a cool deal going right now on Iowa everywhere dot com where we have a contest for people to win we're actually picking the winner a week from today I think right after the side hot game we're going to pick our winner it's the mightiest tailgate contest Iowa everywhere dot com you can get in on this contest you're going to the they're going to pick one winner to receive a radian heater inverter cooler might m 10 blue to speaker a $250 fairway gift card Iowa everywhere dot com I think we're we're pushing like a thousand entries on this so this is a pretty cool contest with our friends over at
the midi m great local Iowa company make quality products just like our quality players on the field for the cycle and drain yes and look I'm a guy who knows how to use a pressure washer like I'm not I'm not sitting around at my house like like you know I'm gonna surprise I don't like my work has a guy has a mighty M pressure washer and he does pressure washes his pool you know what I respect level went way up because I also have a mighty M pressure washer and it's an electric version it is the most badass thing in the world yeah no it is legit it also weighs 7,000 pounds so I'd like to have Chris come carry around my yard please you love this has so when he got his pressure washer delivered for me he had to call me to ask me how to install how to put the handle some walking in the okay you got to get the right the socket ran to you know like how greater sponsors to help a guy like that right because you know I mean some people need to look a little extra help hey you be you be proud of me too and hassle will be proud of me an hour before kickoff I had to make a last minute run to fairway
and I picked up some skin on brats all right you saw that you saw the the pre- I love we drove down so I have I'm sitting right now at the tail end of a Hummer EV and and you know it's an amazing piece of technology I do not recommend taking a road trip anywhere in a giant EV that has a 200 kilowatt hour battery I do not recommend that however I will tell you that it makes for great listening to Iowa everywhere podcasts and I'm a skin on I'm a skin on bra guy like I like it I appreciate you you know I get that hassle doesn't like the jalapenos it's okay like a beer brought you know it's good Johnsonville makes absolutely the best brats just out of the package that you could go get but there's a lot of good braw worst out there well this is on topic right now we're going to take a quick we're going to take a quick a quick break here from a word from fairway
and we'll be right back with some last thoughts from the game and we're going to toss it to our friends over at after dark down good all right we'll be right back these fairway skinless brats are the way to go there's no casing there's no fight you got to have the skin to keep everything in and when those juices flow ho ho ho good thing we have both I don't want juices flowing that's the whole point oh you're going to see those run and you're going to see those run and throughout Iowa everyone next week actually fairway meat and grocery is going to be the presenting sponsor of all of our side-hawk week coverage Ben Eden here this fairway is the presenting sponsor of all of our side-hawk week coverage leading into the big game next week so big shout out to our friends of fairway it's the most ridiculous grocery store in the history of the world okay like I live in northeast Wisconsin we have great way grocery stores in a good way fairway we miss fairway in a way that you cannot imagine right so that meat counter is unbelievable there everything about it is it's fresh it's better
like we come back and we get fairway meat and we take it back with us so you know skinless skin whatever brand is your choice go get some meat at fairway meat and grocery because it's going to be good it's curated by people who know what they're doing and care and actually we still have beardelle many and the butcher in beardelle's fairway store offered are at the time 12-year-old son who is a bit of a meat enthusiast like he's like how do you when are you going to be old enough to like come work here because we care about good quality meat and you're going to get it at fairway so let's go you know this is going to be a cool week right side hawk fairway like it doesn't get much better than that it doesn't all right let's let's give out our freedom tire drive of the game before we wrap here Ben we we were talking pre game or pre post game I guess not pre game we didn't see what happened on the field that we were excited to see what
we're going to happen but the freedom tire drive the game we were talking about this we talked a little bit about to well so in the second quarter Ben I was state was up against it CMO was driving that there's a little momentum shift right I was state puneted away most CMO got the ball back it was a third in one Iowa state stuff some CMO goes up for it goes for the goes for goes for fourth in one Bobby Torell blows it up big turnover on down huge play huge play how does Iowa state answer at that point it was 14 to seven man it was like momentum was shifting a little bit if you could have put together some points there but eight and four comes right back hits him in the mouth bumps outside pops it out for a touchdown puts a Iowa stayed up 21 to seven and by that point it was it was pretty much pretty much said and done I think that's my freedom tire drive of the game how about you really nice job by Aiden there you know part of the magic of zone is to press it far enough to the play side to cut back somewhere and he did that
you know that was like an a B gap right side play and then he and it was all kind of walled up but there was a hat on a hat guy on a guy in the offensive line and tight ends wide receivers doing a good job too and and he stayed on his feet and then broke it back to the backside and once he cut outside nobody was going to catch him so fun to see guys be successful right this has been such a long road Matt and like you know we've all labored under this and it's been painful and you know we had something we love feel like I got ripped away from us and at the same time it's back and you know what I really like this version of it I really do and they did us proud today and so you know our job as cyclones is to come out and support them the next time around so going to get a great opportunity Iowa City against a ranked team and who's playing really well right now by the way and so it happens it will have a magic yeah that's our freedom tire drive of the game Aiden Flora caps it off with the touchdown
freedom tire locations in Ames Altoona Des Moines Urbandale and West Des Moines for all your car care needs I got to get an oil change from them soon get my get my brakes fixed my tires rotated get it all done at freedom tire a thousand percent every time I needed a new set of tires freedom tire was a place I went I miss them frankly being up north but uh for him towers good stuff thanks well plenty of time to kind of dig into Iowa stuff of Ben you won't be on with us until instant Iowa state after the side out games I want to get your just final thoughts from this game and thoughts as we look ahead to the next week yeah so we got what we needed today right we we got a tough physical football team that that Matt we talked about you talked about what Jimmy Rogers wanted out of this game zero pre snap penalties Iowa state had one and it was off a bad call by the officiating crew not letting the team get off not not letting a couple guys get off fast enough
and then when the center judge set the ball for play that to me is a huge shift in a positive direction and you know for him to say that's what we want a win and that that's discipline that's actual discipline and what I saw from the football team is a really well coach team with actual discipline and I loved it so you know like there's a lot of things that I'm going to do and I'm going to do the test next week gets insurmountably harder but let's go what we hear for right like this is what's cool this is what college football is all about and you know as the big 12 is going to continue to face headwinds in the current climate of college sports and the win in probably would be it's all upside so I would stay fans be humble this week be be be aware of the fact that
we're going to go play one of the best offensive lines in college football that's going to lean on us hard for the day but also like let's let's go like there is zero quit in this football team there is zero fear in this football team and and there's a whole lot of discipline and so my hats off to Jimmy Rogers and his staff thank you for representing Iowa State in such a positive way we're grateful and we can't wait to see you do it next week. Perfect way to wrap it up man this was fun I can't wait to do this every game let's go we are not being winkle ben brunz thanks a seed up for hopping on to a wide background producing a little bit to man this is this is fun I it's different for you I think when we did cycle on Sunday you had a you had a kind of a day to kind of soak it in look back at some tape this is raw man we get the raw action from Ben yeah hold on we're at the stage so here we go it it so look this is this is a great opportunity to
