Let’s talk about the top foods to avoid if you have a hypothyroid condition. Goitrogens are things that cause a goiter. A goiter is an enlarged thyroid gland. Goitrogenic foods interfere with certain enzymes and hormones and can lead to a goiter. Foods to avoid for hypothyroidism: 1. Cassava 2. Lima beans 3. Sorgum 4. Sweet potato 5. Flax seed 6. Cruciferous vegetables 7. Millet 8. Soy products 9. Onions 10. Gluten If you have cruciferous vegetables in very small amounts (less than five ounces), it shouldn’t be a problem. Cooking, steaming, or fermenting cruciferous vegetables also reduces their goitrogenic effect. Having sea kelp as well may also help. You would also want to avoid anything that depletes selenium, iodine, iron, and vitamin A. Good sources of selenium and iodine: • Seafood • Sea kelp • Sea salt Good sources of iron: • Red meat • Animal products Good sources of vitamin A: • Egg yolks • Butter • Cod liver oil • Beef liver Dr. Eric Berg DC Bio: Dr. Berg, age 58, is a chiropractor who specializes in Healthy Ketosis & Intermittent Fasting.
