Iditarod 2023: Defending Champion Returns

0:00I'm Cory with the story, bringing you the latest from Anchorage News today. The 54th I Didorod sled dog race gets underway this weekend. The ceremonial start happens Saturday, March 7th, right in downtown Anchorage. Then the official kickoff follows Sunday in Willow with 34 musher's lining up, one more than last year. Defending champion Jesse Holmes is back to defend his title. The musher from the Nana won his first I Didorod last year, marking his fourth straight top 5 finish. That victory came after a grueling race to gnome in 10 days, 14 hours, 55 minutes, and 44 seconds. It was the slowest winning time in 32 years, thanks to the longest course ever at 1128 miles. The route shifted to a fair bank start last year because of low snow in South Central Alaska, scrapping the usual Willow launch.
