Iditarod 2023: Ceremonial Start Kicks Off Race

0:00Here's more Anchorage news for March 7th. The 54th Idyterod Trail sled dog race kicked off with its ceremonial start in downtown Anchorage on Saturday. Crowds line the streets as musher is paraded through Fresno. Junior champ Stanley Robinson led the way just past 10am under the new mushing district arch. This year, bib number one went to the late Mary Shields as an honorary musher. She was the first woman to finish the Idyterod and passed away in July at age 80. Rookie Adam Lyndon Muth from Willow was the first official competitor to hit the trails. Fans cheered wildly along the route, with spectators packed at spots all over the city. Defending champion Jesse Holmes drew the 7th starting spot. The real race restarts Sunday in Willow following the northern route to Nome through checkpoints like Cripple, Ruby, Galena, and Nulato. Thirty-seven muskers are lined up, including 13 rookies and four pass winners. Meanwhile, three are in the new non-competitive expedition class, like Norwegian Swiss billionaire,
