Hybrids Top 19%: Aussie Drivers Shift Toward Efficient Vehicles

About this episode

Hybrid sales soar in Australia, reaching record high in Q4 2025, with petrol-electric hybrids accounting for 19.13% of new light vehicle sales. Plug-in hybrids also saw an increase, while traditional internal-combustion engine cars slipped to a quarterly low. Battery-electric vehicle sales cooled slightly but still maintained a significant market share. This shift is attributed to rising petrol prices and drivers seeking more fuel-efficient options.

0:00On March 15th, here's the latest out of Sydney. New data from the Australian Automobile Association reveals petrol electric hybrid sales hit a record high in the fourth quarter of 20, 25. 55,458 new hybrids were sold, grabbing 19.13% of all new light vehicle sales. That topped the old mark of 16.7% from the September quarter of 2024. Plug-in hybrid sales also climbed, with 15,411 units moving off lots for 5.32% of the market, up. From 4.82% earlier in the year, traditional internal combustion engine cars slipped to a quarterly low of 66.3%, down from nearly 70% before. Battery electric vehicle sales cooled a bit to 9.25% market share after hitting 9.7%. Still, hybrids have outsold pure electrics for 10 quarter straight, a shift from when electrics led briefly back in early 2023.

1:02This surge comes amid rising petrol prices, prompting Australia to tap nearly 20% of its fuel reserves. Drivers are clearly shifting toward more efficient options as fuel costs bite. Overall, hybrids and electrics together push traditional cars below 70% market share for the first time, signaling big changes down, under and how people buy vehicles.
