Huntley's Death: Relief and Remembrance

0:00On March 7th, Ian Huntley, the man convicted of murdering 10-year-old schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman back in 2002, has died in prison at age 52. He was serving a life sentence for luring the girls from the town of Sohom and Cambridge Shire and killing them. Last week, during a workshop at HMP Franklin, he suffered severe head injuries from an attack with a metal pole and never recovered. The assault happened around 9.30 a.m. on February 26th and Huntley was rushed to hospital in a coma. Security around him had been lowered earlier this week when doctors realized he wouldn't pull through. Medics turned off life support after talks with his mother and he passed away at the Royal Victoria infirmary around 8.45 a.m. yesterday. His daughter, Samantha Bryan, expressed huge relief over his death and said he deserves no funeral or grave. She wants people to forget him entirely and believes he's headed straight to a dark place. 1:00and agreed there's no proper burial for someone like that. This wasn't Huntley's first prison attack. He'd been slashed in the throat in 2010 and scalded with boiling water in 2005. Police suspect fellow inmate Anthony Russell, a 43-year-old convicted of multiple murders, led the latest one. An investigation continues with a report heading to prosecutors soon. Police of justice officials offered thoughts to the victim's families, noting the case is lasting shock. With Huntley gone, the focus shifts back to the pain he caused those close-knit communities two decades ago.
