All right, another week, another chat with Dave Randorf, play by play voice of the Tampa Bay Lightning

1:00after years as the voice of the Canadian's regional broadcasts on TSN. A pleasure to welcome back to the show Dave Randorf. Good morning. Good morning, guys. How's it going today? We're doing all right. That one hurt on Sunday night from a Canadian's standpoint. What's your feel for where the Lightning are at as we await Game 5 tomorrow night? I definitely feel that this Lightning team is a much more better look at what they've been doing in the playoffs than we've seen in the last two years. They've lost in the first round, three straight years, but the last two have not been close and last year they really got pushed around. I think they came in with a right from opening day of camp. They came in with a mandate and an attitude that we were going to change that. The whole season was about building towards this moment and these sets of games. I think we've got a good look at that the other night. They're hard to knock out right now and two stats that pop out of me right now.

2:03André Baszlevsky is now 16 and 0 in the playoffs in the after loss with a save percentage around 9.50 in those games. I came across a good stat the other day that Nikita Kutrop now has 80 points in games following a loss in the playoffs which is fourth most in NHL history behind the only Gretzky, Gilmore and Messier. That's just an indication of how seriously these guys are taking it and they put up the other night one down to nothing. In Montreal it did not look good. The crowd was going and they kind of had the lightning stifled. There was a low event game. There was not a lot of shots. Yes, there were a lot of power plays but both PKs were essentially doing the job when you consider the amount of power play opportunities that each team had but it all kind of turned around right with that hit and then the goal and the late stage of the second period. I think this is, you have some of the lightning.

3:03I certainly respect what the Canadians are doing as well. You're asking about the lightning and I think they've rounded into much stronger playoff form that we've seen in the last three years for sure. Just if you can clarify the timeline for me. Were you calling the games in the Stanley Cup Final in 2021? No, as a regional broadcaster. We only do the first round here in the U.S. So I'm doing all these games but I was around the team for the whole run. We were at home in a way doing competitive post game coverage and pre and post game and in between coverage. I was around at the whole time and so I saw all those games. Actually, sorry, let me correct you. I did not go in the road in Montreal because there were restrictions at the time. But traveled all the way up until to it. Anyway, to answer your question. I was there game five, man, and it was an experience I'll never forget. Watching any team win a cup on home ice. I'd never seen that before and it was and never felt it before.

4:05It was incredible, the roar. And people forget, that was a one-nothing game. And the Canadians were making a huge push in the last five minutes. And the place was absolutely roaring and I remember a couple of huge shot blocks from Barclay Goodrow or Blake Holman I think and a couple of key shades by Kerry Price to keep it one-nothing. It was quite a night. You know, you talk about all the adjustments and everything else. The shot totals, Tampa had 17 on that Friday game three loss and the resiliency of that group to come back from down O2 in the game. And win an in regulation. And I wonder about how you see the officiating in this series. It seems unusual to a lot of us. I mean, they'll they'll the old adage and play off hockey as the whistles get buried. And they get buried deeper and deeper the further along we go. But it's been a power play penalty filled four games. I'm curious from your side how you've observed how the officiating crew has handled each of the four games so far. Yeah, listen, 13 power plays in a game is in my mind too many.

5:07You've got two great teams, two hungry teams and tense competitive. This series is as close as it can possibly get. And 13 power plays too much. And I think there were soft calls either way. I think both teams can point to some calls and say, well, really. So I know that the Canadian fans are upset about some and the lightning fans probably a little less so because they won the game. And they probably feel the exact same way that Montreal fans do have the result been different. I just this whole mandate to, you know, tap down emotion and pushing and shoving his grums. Yes, you don't want brawls happening on every whistle. You don't want that. But to really throw cold water on things with the to keep tack calls that we get. It's not my idea of play off hockey to tell you the truth. If you ask me in my opinion, I'd love to see some intensity continue and build an emotion. I think I know the lightning are at their best and they like to play that way.

6:07And the Canadians have said, fine, we'll play that way as well. And they've proven they can do it. That leads to entertaining, feisty, play off hockey. So, you know, I have loved the way this call, this series has been called particularly last couple of games. And certainly in game four. So with too many power plays for my liking. With that Dave Randolph play by play voice of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Joining us here on the morning show on TSN 690 game five tomorrow night on our airwaves. The adjustments that John Cooper has made obviously paid off in a huge way. Namely putting a Hegel with Point and Kutcherov for game four. What did you think of that move? The dividends it paid and the job that John Cooper has done so far. Well, John Cooper is the guy who loves the chess match and the tactics. And certainly on this stage against a team like the Montreal Acadadians with all the eyeballs watching Coast to Coast and a lot of eyeballs in the States as well.

7:08He revels in that. And I think Marty Santawi is up for the task as well. I think that he is state committed to try to keep a match up that he wants to try to keep responsible guys up against that Suzuki line, which to this point has worked. You know, five on five anyway. I got a minute. I was a little surprised that Hegel and Serella got split up at the same time. He just shows you right now how valuable Brandon Hegel is to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He wants to keep him with Serella because those two can not only chip it offensively and they play together. You know, 85% of the time here with the lightning, but he wants them to check. And he wants them to shut down that top line. But he also needs to get Braden Point going. And to a lesser degree, maybe Nikita Kutrov as a result of it. So he puts them up on that line. And I think both Kutrov and Point had their best games of this series. So just goes to show you the value that Brandon Hegel is bringing right now with six goals and then goals at all four games so far.

8:13And Gordi Hattrick and a fight to boost and just the emotion that he's been showing on the bench. John Cooper referenced to him standing up and saying something at some point yesterday. Or sorry, the other night of game four. And everybody just listening and following. He said upon arrival in Tampa yesterday to the media, press gathering that he may not wear a letter now, but he will in the near future with this team. He's come in and he is flowy, but surely grown into a real leadership role. So wherever you put Hegel, you're going to right now, anyway, get results and get the reaction that you want from the other players that he's playing with. I think Gensel being put back with Sirelli there or saying with Sirelli and Gordi. Gordi's a buzzsaw. We know him, right? He's going to be responsible. He may not have the offensive hands that say Gensel is Sirelli do, but he is going to fit in just fine on that line. And then, you know, then the depth starts to get tested as you go down for the lightning through their third and fourth line.

9:15Oliver Bjorks thread getting into the lineup for the first time in a long time. He's just not been a fit here with the lightning and we'll see what his future is going forward. But he played hard the other night. That's a guy who's a, you know, a 20 plus goal score, but I respect how he plays hard and he did the other night too. I think you guys are getting a good look at this rookie Dominic James, who you probably knew nothing about. And because we knew nothing about him until he showed up this season. And your reaction is probably the same as mine when I first saw him as like, wow, this kid can really fly. Yeah. And he injects a whole bunch of speed into any line that he's on, no matter who he's playing with. And he's confident he wants to pluck. He almost got the overtime winner. What was in game two, I think. So he's been visible as well. So I think he's gained a lot of trust very early with John Cooper. So that helps too. Yeah, it's been well documented day through four games. The Canadian's top line has no goals at five on five. I'm wondering, I mean, is it too easy to explain the lack of production from a very dominant top line with all the points and all the goals.

10:15Cumidatively, they, they put up over 82 games that right now that, you know, the, with Churnac, Macdonough down the list that the physical component of how Tampa plays defensively has really impacted in terms of how coffield and Suzuki in particular have kind of played so far. I'm looking at it from a guy who sees the Canadians play occasionally on television. I still watch the fair amount and we saw them twice late in the regular season and now we're seeing them up close four times here in the, you know, in the playoffs. So you really get to see things. And, and as you know, everything is magnified. So none of this is meant to be critical. I don't think Nick Suzuki's playing poorly at all. The results are there. I think there's been a couple of opportunities where the lighting are lucky that he has not cached in on some, some shot or some passes that I've seen him complete in other situations. And, and for a guy, a player of his caliber, 100, excuse me, 100 point guy.

11:16I think that's he's just, he just has some bad luck in a couple of cases. Cole coffield, I know this is not his first time is not his first rodeo in the Stanley Cup playoffs, but listen, he's, I can relate. He and him, me and him see eye to eye. So I know you must be tough out there on the ice in the Stanley Cup playoffs when you're that size despite the skill. He's going to have to fight through that, just like Montana and Salem, we did when he was a member of the lighting. And then this love cobsky. Listen, he was feeling good right in high when he scored that atrick in game number one all on the power play, including the overtime winner. And he's had a great season and I love what I'm seeing from this guy who just turned 22. But the fact is, since that time, he's been punched in the face and knocked out at center ice. So what I say knocked out, I mean, knocked down hard, credit him for coming back. Things change when you get punched in the face. So I'll be interested to see how this affects his mindset, how his aggressiveness.

12:19And I'll be interested to see if more times anyway, it makes a shift in that line, like maybe puts him back with the kids and makes a change. I know that's been brought up and some of the articles I've been reading, I was thinking it myself because we've seen it this season. So it's a game of adjustments. We'll say that we go to that adjustment, which is a big one. But he's four games in and he does not have a goal five on five from his top line. Do you keep with it and hope it breaks through? Because if it does, I think the damn could break and really work in the Canadian saver. But if it doesn't, he might be looking back and this thinking, Jesus, I should have at least shaken it up and given it a goal because I had a sample size on which to base that judgment. I know John Cooper said that Victor had been probably won't play in this series. That's not that's not definitely Dave. What do you think the odds are that we might see a miraculous return from the captain? In this series, I would like that and my instincts tell me that it would be highly unlikely.

13:23He has not been really participating at any great pace in skates. So it's hard to drop a guy in who's missing a significant amount of time now. He's missed over half the season collectively. And his game really, even when he was in the lineup, wasn't at the level that we've been accustomed to seeing from Victor Headman. That's not saying that they won't work on him and get him up to speed if they continue to make a deep run here. He's their captain. He's their all-time leader in games played. And he's their everything in so many different ways. And he is around the team and in traveling with them. I have not spoken victory, not even casually. I think everybody is respecting and giving him a space. And that's kind of the way it goes right now these days. So that's completely respect that. So I can't really even give you my inside information. I don't have any. I just know the character that this guy has and the competitive drive he has. And it's probably killing him to not be a part of this because he's been a part of all the three early exits in the last three years.

14:25And he's been a part of the good times as well. He's a cons might trophy winner. So will he be coming into the lineup if they make a run? I would think they're working towards that. Yes. I would doubt we'll see him before a potential game seven on Sunday. Okay. And the key to Kutrov Z. Is he okay? A day after that hit from Jake Evans. We're all very concerned here in Montreal. Oh, I'm sure Canadian fans are all really concerned about his welfare. And it will be, yes. It looks okay to me. We all actually won't want the team yesterday and he looked fine. Okay. He's a day way that that guy is. Listen, I. There's going to be guys yelling at the radio when I say this. That's a dangerous hit. It's a dangerous hit. Is it overly aggressive? Is it a massive collision? No. What it is is dangerous. It's a shove in the numbers from behind when a guy is three or four feet away from the boards.

15:29And it wrenched him. I'm not going to sit here and get into his head and whether or not he was playing it up. I don't think he had to play it up as long as he did. If he was in fact doing that because the call had already been made. And he still remained over the bench. I've seen this guy take hits and abuse before and I've seen him give it out as well. He's a villain. Plain and simple. But he's a very good villain and every other team would love to have in their lineup because he's a difference maker. And I'm well aware of the narrative and how he what he said in that press conference in 2021 about Montreal fans going on going crazy and all that kind of stuff. And hey, that's he's going to live and die with that. That's never going to be forgotten much real and probably nor should it. But the hit itself, the act of the hit was was dangerous in my mind. Through the middle, there's a back-ticking evidence to steal it away. Out at center. Evans. Far side to the net. That's just thrown away by Vasilyevsky to the near corner. Towards as Kutrov goes hard into the boards. He was knocked over by Evans and he's doubled over in pain. Yeah, and he stayed doubled over in pain. I was there in the crowd and you saw Jake Evans' reaction right away.

18:34I mean, before he even hit the boards, Evans has got his arm up like what? What was that? And my cousin's there. He's sitting next to me. He's yelling. He's doing the dive thing. And that was the greatest dive of all time. It was. And I'll stand by this, okay? Obviously, I'm not saying that Jake Evans didn't do anything. Jake Evans should not do that. He needs to be smarter than that in that situation. Not so much because of the safety issue for me as you can't take a penalty in that spot. And Kutrov's sold that. You cannot convince me otherwise that he sold that like a European soccer player. I went in Brazil at the World Cup. Yeah, yeah. We've all seen it. Yeah. How many times have you seen it? A guy's writhing around in pains, trying to sell it and then gets up. Right. They bring out the magic spray. They spray him and all of a sudden he bounces up and he's fine. We all know this. Many, many a hockey fan talks about these soccer players diving and all.

19:36That's exactly what that was. You'll never convince me otherwise. He was not. He was fine. He knew Evans was there. He knew the contact was coming and he did one of the greatest diving cell jobs of all time. I'm not taking any issue with the referees calling that. You got to call that 10 times out of 10 when I'm saying Kutrov is a veteran player in this league who is very good and we've seen him cell calls in this series. The lightning as a team are masterful at selling calls. And that was one thing that really struck me this weekend watching both games live. Yeah. Was how good they are. It's an art form. It's a game. I believe this. I think everybody should believe this. We see it. Selling calls is a huge part of sports playing. Yes. Yes. So focus it on the NHL. To me, that's exactly what Kutrov did. We've seen Crosby take an embellishment penalty. We saw McKinnon take an embellishment penalty as well. Yep. This, that's, that is Mickey Mouse stuff compared to what Nikita Kutrov did in that moment.

20:40In my view. Yeah. And I stand by it that I absolutely believe that he sold the hell out of that thing. And part of it was the injury thing, but I think it started even before that. And watch it again. Look at Jake Evans. You see from Evans's reaction. Nobody, nobody was closer than him. He was right there. He knew exactly what Kutrov was doing. And I tip my cap to him. I tip my cap. It was the greatest. It was the greatest I have ever seen. The referees had no choice but to call a penalty. Thank God that they reduced it to a minor. Yeah. Well, I think that's the end game. And that's why I think you're 50% right in this, in this conversation. I think the 50% right is the sell job. There's no doubt. I mean, the guy, the guy wanted to whip his gloves off. Yeah. Right. And he's out there on the ice. He misses. And he gets right back out there for the first shift at five on three. So clearly, I mean, he had, the sell job was, was by rule he had to miss a shift. Yeah. And I get like, you know, Randolph had mentioned like, I'm not going to get into his head or whatever. But I do definitely believe in the experience playing a factor. You feel that contact and environment, right? I get that part.

21:40And Evans is the guy that knows, and you're right about the facial reaction. He knows how much pressure he puts on a guy when he lays the lumber. But it doesn't excuse him for doing that to begin with. I mean, such a good smart defensive player. It was just like, what are you doing in that situation? But for me, why I don't get on board with the dive versus the sell, which is undeniable, is how hard he flew into the boards. Like he went into the boards with speed. If it was like a situation that happened in the face-off circle where there's nothing there to observe. Other than the ice surface itself. Yeah. But to me, that's where I can't kind of see it because just that watch it again. Watch how hard he flies into the boards. But you're not going to do that to yourself. Well, there's an art to doing it, though, when you know it's coming. It's very different when you have time to prepare yourself for that contact with the boards, which I believe Kucherov had versus when you don't. Because he drove earlier in this series. I never get what game it was, but that was like a, that was egregious. That was embarrassing.

22:40You know, I guess maybe he, maybe you're right. Maybe sharpened his tools and then executed it in a better way. I think so. You know, think about the hit on the hit on Slocovsky, okay? Yeah. Just to compare and contrast for a second. I read somewhere, I heard somewhere that Slocovsky said that he realized he was there at the last second and was able to prepare himself for it. That's why that's the difference between being maybe out cold on the ice versus being winded with what he appeared to be. And that split second of knowing is all it takes to prepare yourself or at least brace yourself to some extent. When you can brace yourself, bracing yourself is a thing, right? The worst falls are the ones where you're not able to brace yourself. That's right. And I believe the Kucherov was able to brace himself but to do it in such a way that made it look very convincing. Like he's a stuntman. He kind of, yeah, he's a professional hockey player. He's been doing this for his entire life. Yeah, understand. And he can execute things like that at high speed.

23:42Yeah, I just think he's such a villain that he gets, he gets, he gets zero benefit, right? Maybe he's in my head. Yeah. And at one point, I mean, you were there, you were in the building on Sunday and the fans are Kucherov, Kucherov. And I'm a home. I'm like, no, stop. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, I mean, it's such a fun series, man. It's fun to have these conversations. It's fun to see the game in a different way. How tight it's been played. I hate the referees. I hate the penalties. But it's just part of the layered effect of what's made this, can't miss hockey through four games. And maybe a can't miss game on the out of town scoreboard tonight. You want the Bruins. I mean, you have been cheering for the Bruins for a while. Like you are if you're a Canadian's fan tonight, right? Yeah. You want the Bruins to extend this series. You want the Bruins to put a hurting on the Sabers to some extent in this game tonight. How about, you know, compete, maybe show up at the very least show up.

24:42That was one. What was that Sunday afternoon? I mean, that was crazy. At least it was over quickly, Sean. At least it was over quickly. We'll have more on the various storylines around the Stanley Cup playoffs, including I haven't had a chance to weigh in on that Ryan Paling overtime goal. Oh, interesting. A couple of other things going on around the National Hockey League that I wanted to weigh in on. So we'll dive into that back into the Canadians and what we're expecting. They should be on the ice in an hour in Brassard. An update, maybe from Noah Dobson or on Noah Dobson coming up later on today. TSN 690 Welcome back. last night in Pittsburgh the penguins stayed live in game five it was not it wasn't pretty but they they found a way to get the job done and live to fight another day. Still hiding it. Long rebound bounce behind LaGuard. The amount of bounces is unheard of. The penguins play pinball on Dan LaGuard and they take a three to lead last touch Chris Littang his second goal in the last two games. How did that go in Dan Vlodar has got to still be asking himself that question just a bizarre sequence of events but that goal stands up. The penguins are hanging on for dear life there in the third period they got some great looks at an empty net but they couldn't score including Sydney Crosby put one

26:45off the post and the penguins look it's hard to put a team away it's hard to win for even when a team looks as dead and dusted as the penguins have looked at times in that series so it goes on we're going to get a game six in that one and that will of course take place tomorrow night while the Habs and Lightning are renewing hostilities in game five it'll be game six between the flyers and the penguins that was the first a series to get underway we are going to get a game of three game fives tonight is that right is my math correct yeah three game fives but only one in which the series is tied to two that's the wild and the stars and you know not for nothing but nix is ookie and a lot's been made of the fact that he's not been able to get uncorked five on five nor have really the Canadians big guns that's right there's been a lot of that you know David Pastor Naxx got nothing going five on five you go rant and it's got nothing going five on five there's a lot of superstars that have not been able to contribute for their teams five on five in these

27:46playoffs fair point we talked about the first two games for the oilers pointless for Conor McDavid of course I didn't mention Conor McDavid Nathan McKinnon quiet you know four game series sweep gets another empty net goal but yeah no to your point and like surprising a little bit but not that much right I mean there's just so much focus why I love the best the seven series you know can you outwit can you outsmart are your players up to the challenge because these players are we can all do it like you and I aren't in the NHL but we know the keys to the series don't let Kutra off beat you find a way to get pass Andre Vazquez like as hockey fans we can all identify the air quote gamebreakers of each series on every single team but the the challenge at hand is are your players good enough to react and overcome Utah reacted and overcame a three nothing deficit last night in the late game Vegas Vegas up to a three nothing lead and then the floodgates opened Utah ends up tying it up three three right back to center of speed but the brings it in the kids and we

28:52go down low trying to work it to the front we a golfer across to one time that's a buck 45 into the third period he ties it at three after they fell behind three nothing then they get the go ahead goal from Clayton Keller it's four three Utah but there's still 15 minutes or so on the clock and then sure enough Brett howden gets his second goal of the night to tie it up with about nine and a half to go in the third rotate it right back around the wall to Michael bend off circuit jump hand up it out top looking for a lean shot score Brett howden on the top is sucking to the day to tie it at four and then on we go to overtime and with less than a minute on the clock loses his thick assidering past two dinner scores say theater for the minute left and overtime with no review on this one five four golden nights and the series is

29:59tied so we'll get a game five with the series tied to two which really is one of the great things game five with the series tied to two yeah is chest kiss one of my favorite things and all the sports Vegas Carter Hart 31 saves on 35 shots gave up for Carol the Melka the Utah goalie 36 shots on him he gave up five so not exactly a heavyweight tilt from a goal-tending standpoint and that's kind of been the story for Vegas all year long and John Torturella came in and took over a team that was quite a good even strength team yeah an elite possession team but a team that couldn't get a save and they still are not getting saves here in the Stanley Cup playoffs and again to riff back on the earlier point about prime time players right Jack Michael has been fantastic for Vegas in the series got six points through four games Mitch Mariner no goals three assists assists are good yeah I don't know how many a primary or whatever but yeah but yeah you know another playoff and wondering you know Mitch
