3:08More on that coming up in a bit, but Travis Steel joins us right now. He is on the make it right call call right hotline. He's the head coach of the Miami Red Hawks who are I lost count. You're 31 and O coach. I lost count a long time ago, but it's what everybody's saying. So I'm going to I'm going to take him for the word. You guys have been fantastic for the men American conference. It reminds me of the old days. What point did you know that this team could be special? You know, I thought it started back here last year, and Cleveland, you know, we lost a hard breaker to accurate in the turn of the championship game. Shoot been I thought we led for 39 minutes and 56 seconds. And and they had a shot kind of towards the very end and then listen, there's a tough moment for us, but we won 25 games last year. You know, we're not like a one hit wonder, you know, and we set a single season record for wins in a season of Miami and. We were able to retain a portion, a good portion of our roster from last year.

4:11And I thought that that that finish against Akron and the championship game propelled us into this off season. I thought we had incredible spring, incredible summer, incredible fall. So I knew we had a chance to be really good when with the way that our guys responded in the off season coach. What's amazing to me is obviously the pressure every single win and when national pundits start getting involved in Wally Serbia is taken up to cause. And everybody's talking about your program and yet not only your kids winning, but these aren't blowouts. I mean, you do have some on the resume clearly because you guys are so good, but the close matchups against bitter rivals who have done everything they can to take you down and yet against OU. You pull it out often over time, pull it out Toledo, the Western Michigan game. So many of these the Buffalo games. So many of these are so close coach. That is such a mark of a special team.

5:11Yeah, you know, our guys really execute well in those big moments. You know, I feel like we get even more together. Our level of focus goes up and our group stays calm cool and collected and we execute. You know, and listen, we've we've won every different way. We've won in the games in 60s. We've won the games in the 100s. We've won big. We've won tight. We've won where we're bound. We're up, you know, like we've been in every situation, which I do think will serve us really, really well in the March. And you guys said it, not I probably from the outside looking in. I probably would have never, unless you're in the fight. Every place we've gone has been the Super Bowl. I mean, this thing started back in January at Toledo. Things packed there are there buying three beer for the students. And you know, so I was like, ma'am, like this thing started early. Can't state Rob Cinderoff bought the beer for the students. And it's just like everywhere we've gone. It's been sold out.

6:11You know, they've been ready to rush the court because we've been ranked top 25. And it's been, it's been a lot of fun, man. I will say that, but it's been a lot though at the same time. I do have to ask what's directly ahead of you tomorrow 11 a.m. Because that's, you know, where you put your number one seed is at 11 a.m. on a Thursday morning. How do you, hey, I love the Mac and I love the Mac tournament. That's odd to me. How do you guys handle that? Yeah, love the Mac. The Mac's a great conference, but you know, it is. It's interesting. It's okay. You finish first and league and you're going to play 11 a.m. And really it's 10 a.m. But they like saving times. It's just this past week. If you think about it that way, you know, it's interesting. But we'll play anytime anywhere, man. Like we don't are our guys. We are very nimble. We don't care where we play or who we play or what time. But it is interesting, you know, like as you're seeing across all these. All college basketball. It's like how do you protect your top couple of things, right?

7:15Like that's what a lot of these men, major leagues should think about. And I don't really have the right answer on that. But I have I've watched Belmont lose in the valley. I watch they were the one seed in the valley. I watched you and see Wilmington lose the CAA. How do you how do you best protect those teams like, you know, like to act. Me, I could have had it freaking unbelievable yard isn't getting enough national recognition in my opinion. How do you protect them? How do you protect us? How do you you know like I don't know. And I'm going to give the good thing about the Mac. There's so much parity. I mean, the difference between, honestly, my opinion usually one through eight. There is a much. Like you masses for a phenomenal team. I think Frank does a great job, man, and that that's what we have to play. We found one and that's a man just if they speak to the depth of our league this year. Yeah, if you could take us through. We're talking to Travis steel head coach Miami Red Hawks basketball right now. Undefeated loan on beaten and to be this far in the season is just insane.

8:17For a college basketball team, I don't care what the schedule is. But when you have the certain pundits that bring up your schedule, you've had a back and forth with some of these. And now freedom of information. I love that. I love that for you. I got involved. Well, who you guys were actually trying to play? And it just goes to show how hard and how challenging it is to schedule at your level as it is. Do you feel like you don't have to say anything anymore? It seems like America's on your side, no matter what. Yeah, I mean, like I do think most people don't understand the scheduling piece. It's like, well, why did you guys just, you know, play Cincinnati or why didn't you just play Ohio State or Kentucky or Louisville? We tried. We tried. And like it's, it takes two to tango and and they're, they are in the position of valor because we're trying to play them and they get to say yes or no. Right. And and I get totally why they don't. So, certainly, well, they didn't want to play us. Right. It's a numbers game.

9:17They're trying to put their teams in the best positions possible to get an at large bid and and the net is very, very important. And everybody knows how to how to how to use the net now to their advantage at a schedule. Scheduling is very important. So, you know, we were in no means land this past year and and hopefully it'll get better as we can build our program and build our brand and make it easier. But again, it's, it's, it's, I've been told that it's not going to be easier because we, because we just went with 31 and now, but, um, but yeah, you focus on the things that you can control. Right. That's out of our control. How awkward was it for Travis Steel joining us on the show? How awkward was it for you to talk to Bruce Pearl last week? Not awkward at all. Listen, I've known Bruce since I was probably 17 years old and he was the head coach at UW Milwaukee at the time and he had a really good program. I was coaching high school in AAU. I was the coach in AAU that year and he was recruiting some of my players.

10:20So, it was good to reconnect with him. I'm, I'm, I like Bruce. I've said this before, listen, he's an, I've got tons of respect from him. He's one of the best coaches and he was all a favor. But again, again, I'm not calling Bruce Pearl to ask him for his opinion on our team. So, I told our guys why the heck should we care? Somebody said about our team right now. You know, so, and again, everybody's got it. And he's entitled to his own opinion. You know, it's, it's very odd to say this and I brought this up last week. It's almost he's the perfect guy to argue with because a lot of this is judgment calls. Like if something were to go bad and the tournament here this week, you know, they got a, it's subjective. And he has enough history. He's on a big enough network. He has enough gravitas where if he says it, like, oh, Miami shouldn't be in. Okay, well, then there's going to be a bunch of guys like me and the rest of the country who are like, no, you're full of it. You're crazy. And it starts a conversation where I think it actually gets people worked up to put you in the tournament in case something bad does happen.

11:20I know you plan on handling your business, but this might be one of the best things for your program here. I agree. And listen to it. What do they always say? I think that any publicity is good publicity. It's good to be talked about. And I think, you know, for us, like you said, to get out on the front end, that thinks a great thing. And it gets people to start thinking about it even more. And it's on people's minds. I mean, I don't see how, again, doing this as many years as I have. You can say I should have to schedule all this and all that. But there were 31 and L. Results have to matter. It's a boy. Right? Like, I mean, 31 and L. It's incredible. Coach, you're my age. So you were in high school when Wally put up 43. And Miami was considered Cinderella going to the sweet 16 that year. Can an undefeated Miami in 2026 still be considered Cinderella?

12:23I think so. You know, and I think because of the way the landscape is of college athletics, or we don't have the resources, obviously, that a lot of these schools have, right, these P5, P6s. And I think that's what makes March madness great. That's a fans love, right? I mean, you love to get behind the mid majors that can make runs. And I think our teams built to make a run. I do. We have so many good players. We shoot the ball in the elite level. And a three-point line is the greatest equalizer in the game. Right? Like, we shoot one of the best shooting teams in the country. And we're big. We have good positional size across the board, which I think is going to serve service well here and March as well. So I think we're a team that can make a run. You know, we've recruited this team and developed this team into it with the vision of getting to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament where anything can happen.

13:24Right? That sweet 16-round, anything can happen. And I like our odds, man. I really do. Travis Steel joining us, Miami Redhawks basketball coach. All right. 31 and all. You've had two sensational seasons after two years of building it up. How do you handle the distractions personally? And I think you know what I mean by distractions. Yeah. You know, like, I think we just stay focused at the task of hand, man. Like, we love it here at Miami. And I love coaching this group. I'm so fortunate to just be a part of it. And I'm fortunate that our AD and our president gave me the opportunity here to lead this program and to rebuild it. And, man, we want to enjoy this ride. It's been so much fun. Like, I think everybody sees the results, but just the bus rides, the hotels, the deals. Man, our group is so connected. It gets along so well, man.

14:24So I take a lot of pride in what we've been able to build here, just from a culture standpoint. And so we want to really enjoy it, man, and not let anyone or anything take away from that. Coach, I mean this sincerely. I went to Akron, but I'm a Matt guy. I think what you're doing is fantastic. It's great for the conference. It's great for college basketball. It was there. But that's not it. He played OU under John Gross. No, no, no. That's not it. And what is it? Well, he probably played under John Gross at some point. Well, Illinois in it. Here's what I could tell you. There is a woman named Barbara Steele. I know her. Barbara Steele happens to be the mother of Travis Steele. The coach that we just had on. Steele has another son who is a coach in college basketball. All right. That son's name is John Gross. They are half brothers.

20:32Ten years apart. Ken has left the room. He threw down his headset. And he left the room. And I have to say, can actually we told don't let your phone. Don't go online. And I could tell you by that reaction. He actually helped true to his word. Because he was getting the warm and fuzzies. You guys do that to me. Like, you start to get nervous. Like, did I ask that question already? Did somebody else ask the question? You start to get alarmed. And I knew when he could see my eyes link with yours. And the minute the segment ended. Oh, of course. I run down. I go, we got to do this. And he was doing his read. And he started to pan. Oh, he's freaking out. He was like, oh boy. And now you know he's getting besieged with text messages and vocals. But yeah, it's a great story. They grew up in Danville, Indiana. Grossborn 10 years earlier. Influence steel to enter coaching. They have occasionally faced off in high stakes. Mac tournament games such as the, uh, this says 20, 25 conference final.

21:33I thought it was 224. It was 24. Yeah, it was last year. Oh, yeah. Okay. Um, pretty amazing. Obviously they have gone up against each other. And Ken is right. They've known each other a long time. Some would say, well, steel has not known. I guess he has known him just as long, right? Gross known nine months before steel was aware. Well, I think Ken was like, I mean, we, we all know him. They're college basketball coaches and they've, they've coached big games there. They're in the same circles. Uh, hey, J.J.K. says, I loved what you did there. Poor Ken. Welcome back, Ken. Ken is back in. I don't think a lot of people knew that. Well, I don't think it's anything Ken asked to do. Do you think coach knew that Ken didn't know? That's what I'm wondering. I think coach picked up. Do you play it again? Don't play it again. Just one more time. Don't play it again. Don't. Don't make me dance. Whatever. I mean this sincerely. I, I went to after him.

24:34It's like the Harbaugh's when they matched up in the Super Bowl. Remember that. We could get that Mac final on Saturday night, nationally televised. That is what everybody wants to see. Those tickets are going to be tough to come by too. Maybe some of the most expensive tickets at the Mac. 9 a.m. noon, 5 p.m. All right. Landry's code words. I thought Landry was listening and he was making fun of me for not knowing. He was just texting me the Aaron Wilson video. Can we play that? We cannot play that. No, we cannot play that. 25:34But people used to call up Jeff's in the L.R. On the Saturday show and on the on the old radio station. They used to call them up and run names of baseball cards. And go, hey, I got a Don Russ 1985. I got a Bowman and they'd make up a fake name. It'd be their friend or it'd be like one of these names. Like Gary Guyetti. And sometimes Sinalar would catch him and sometimes he wouldn't. And sometimes he would spout out that one's like a good item. That's a good item. That's 25 bucks. And then you'd hear the laughter in the background because it wasn't a real card. It wasn't a real name. I've just been informed that Travis Still's brother will be on the midday show today. Half brother. Half brother. Are you guys going to play that form? Aren't they? I don't know. No. I already told Meredith too. No. You can't throw Ken under the bus like that. That's my fault. You can do whatever you want. John, that is the makings of how you get a stapler thrown at you.

26:35I didn't throw any in anybody. I didn't throw a stapler in there. I messed that up right there and there. I usually send thank you cards to coaches, which live and makes fun of me about. I'm going to say this about the Ravens and the Browns. I think you guys are looking at this whole thing wrong. Because I think you guys are the door haters. But I'm going to say like this. 28:35Because I haven't walked it back. I mean, the staff says he's not that great. The play setting is not that great. But I don't think he's replaceable right now. But I think is this. I feel this way. I think football, wow. We're going to go for a ball, wow. I think honestly because of all the changes in the North, this the NFC rebuild north we got we got rid of a failed coach and bought tomorrow and the difference is Munkin at least had the co-honest to say he wish he had a better relationship with Lamar so at least we got a coach that's honest enough to say he made a mistake. Paul Bluff never did that and we heard all the rumors that came out so I honestly believe the difference between the number one scene in the north and the last team in the north it's only going to be maybe two games. Love that love hearing that. Alright that keeps us up. I think every team in our division is going to win at least seven to nine games and it's

29:36gonna be because of coaching changes and person player nail and I think should or it's going to be one of the highlights. I don't think no matter and then you guys go this guy was a great you know let's say Malik right Malik Willis did a great job in Green Bay but he had better talent with Green Bay a better offensive line so he looked at better but you gotta look at what the doors looked like with the talent that we had no number ones no offensive lines but he was playing with receivers that we were that wouldn't even make average teams so if we get better talent he is going to look better so I think with Cincinnati losing their edge Russian who and who was the four top airwriters in an NFL over consistently miles Garrett get more out of every mile when you share the ride to work with carpooling you'll have time to relax save money and pick up new friends.
