Hour 4: comments from Brian Gutekunst

1:02the Packer's side of things. Brian Goodakinst had a chance when he, they're down at the owners and general managers meetings and all that kind of stuff in Arizona, and we heard from Matt LaFlore a little bit yesterday and read a lot of what he had to say today and got into that discussion. Brian Goodakinst, since we have not heard from him since the combine and he had a pretty lengthy discussion about a lot of the talent and things like that and talked about some things interworking wise, but not a ton, not a ton when it came to kind of behind the scenes and what we're talking about now in regards to some of the players and Besachi and all that kind of stuff, but this is Brian Goodakinst talking to the media, take a listen. All right, what did you, I guess the trade first of all, what did you like about that year and what you didn't prop to you go that direction? Yeah, you know, we thought better for Walker, frankly, back when he was when he was not starting in India his first few years, he was really good special teams player. We kind of tried to acquire him then, and so we've been a really good player for a long time. Obviously, very good, you know, leader as well, captain there. So I think as

2:08we kind of went down and we realized it was going to be really tough to get, we could quay back, I wanted to make sure that we had an answer, that middle linebacker, you know, particularly one that Matt Henson, that's an veteran presence, and I think we're excited to accomplish that. Matt, and that time to earlier about, you know, maybe silly guys were all really happy with roles, and you know, it had it took its toll. It does leadership go toward making sure those kind of things. I know you always be on good leaders, but is that important? You think we'll bring you guys around? I think as the season wears on, you'd like all the other guys to, you know, to attack whatever role they're given, but I think most players, if, you know, if they're going to be a little unhappy with the roles, if they're not the top, you know what I mean, then that's okay. I do think you have to, as a player, you have to manage that, and you have to, you know, put your best foot forward and the roles that are given to you. And I think most of our guys do that, but I do think that is a challenging thing for Matt and his staff, and that always will be because a lot of competitive guys in that room.

3:08With Zaire and Hargrave, did you talk to Gannon before making those moves just because he has something that you're doing? Of course, all that stuff is really valuable. Again, our scouting stuff doesn't, you know, a great job to the yearly kind of tracking of these guys, but whenever you have coaches come in, you know, for us, it's a nice way to debrief them from all their players that they've been around, and that always helps. Hargrave's obviously not in a 26 to 29 range. What do you still think he has left in the tank? Yeah, I mean, obviously, you know, he's been an exceptional player in his career. He's been one of those guys. It's a, as a, as a restaurant, a past rusher. He's a complete player, and I just think, as again, we've lost a few guys, and the defensive interior there, and we just need to add something, and I think particularly because he was released, it was not part of the Penn store farm that he just fed really well. Was Zaire coming in? Do you expect Andrew to kind of assume most of the coverage responsible is that money back or in the stations? No, they're both going to be, you know, responsible for that. I mean, obviously, Edge is such a unique player. He is so versatile with his ability to play out the ball and the

4:14run game to cover to the rusher passer. He's really a complete linebacker, as is Zaire. So, you know, those guys that will be interested in seeing, obviously, Kueh and Edge had a nice working relationship. It'll be interesting to see how that evolves with this under Jonathan's new defense. So it'll be interesting how that evolves. When you charting out your path for this break, going into free agency, I know the season did end movement that you wanted, but you guys were 9-3 at one, and sure looked like you were on the cost of being that difficult team. When you kind of made that plan, do you believe kind of in the team you were before those injuries hit? How much of that directs were you meant to? I think you have to be able to overcome injuries, whatever those are, and we did, you know, certainly get into the season, but I do believe in our team very much. I think we've got a great group of guys. We have a very talented group. I think we have a group that is capable of accomplishing a lot, and we did last year as well. This will be a whole new year. They've got to come together as a team, like I've spoken about many times, like this doesn't matter how much talent we have, if they don't come together as a team,

5:16we're never going to accomplish ultimately what we want to. But I thought we'd do some really good things last year, but at the end, when some of the adversity hit, we didn't finish like we needed to do, and I would expect this team moving forward to work for us, you know, fixing that. Brown, let's do it too with Sky. Just being able to potentially have a guy that can handle multiple components coming to return. Yeah, certainly. Last year was one of the first years you really had an expanded role as a returner, and he did an outstanding job. He was one of the better guys that did both in the league last year, and just as we went through that and an opportunity to get him, we just obviously, that was something last year with our special teams that we needed to kind of add to. So excited to get in and see what he can do for us. You've talked about prioritizing special teams more than you have in the past. I would push back a little bit on the right hand. I think we have over the past three or four years. I think we'll continue to, but I don't think that, you know, it's something we haven't addressed. I'm wondering, bringing in a guy in Sky, who is predominant, or might be your own specialist. Is that kind

6:20of an indication that there was a little bit more priority that needed to be given there, and do you feel like you've done that? Yeah, I think over the last four or five years, particularly with special teams, players, we've tried to identify and acquire something. We've done that in the past. This was really no different. I happen to be as a returner. I do think Sky's got more to tank as an on-offence, as well, and be interested to see how Matt kind of, once he gets to know him, how he sees him and how he'll use him on offense. But yeah, I think, yeah, I think over the last four or five years, you know, more suddenly we ever have before. We've really tried to target some special teams, guys, whether it be through free agency in the draft, or whatnot, and try to improve that group. And I think we have, I think we've been improving a lot of areas. But the returner game last year was not where I wanted it to be, and then I'm excited to get Sky into the fold. I asked this because he's not employed by a team right now. Have you guys discussed trying to bring card cousins into that of Jordan? Yeah, we've discussed a lot of those options. Obviously, that's a guy who's got a lot of votes on the wall in this lead,

7:21certainly. So we've certainly discussed all those kind of things, and that's where it goes. It is a possibility, just letting Desmond and Kyle Duke it out here, do you think you need someone more established to come in? It's certainly a possibility to be very high on both those guys, but at the same time, you know, if we have an opportunity to add to that room, you're going to look at it. As watching the introductory Cuscofford, this sort of John Eric and Jeff and Miami get down there, they hold rebays this ideal because you guys make the playoffs frequently, and it's been a long time in the, obviously, the flip side of that, three straight years you've been in, the 7C. How much does that kind of consistency allow you? And what do you think you've got to do to hit that next step? Well, you got to head under earlier on. I think we just, we have to be able to, in situations towards the end of the game, finish. We're going to be able to finish those games and control them. You know, we played some explosions of football last year. We played some really good high level football last year and really had control of games at certain times,

8:26but just weren't able to kind of finish it off. So I think that's something that we had to get back to that level where we were doing that early in the season and then I think no matter what adversity comes through season, whether that's injuries or whatnot, being able to, you know, stay on task and then finish those things. When something like that becomes a trend of season, it happens more than once, a dig into it. Why was that? Why were you guys on the to finish games? Yeah, I think collectively, I think, for me, it's just about understanding that there's different situations through a football game and you got to be able to handle each and every one of them, whether you're up by a lot, whether you're down, different parts of the game. And I just think, you know, as our, as we went through the season, we just never accomplished that part of it. But I, but I feel really good about the people on our, in our building and that we'll get that corrected. Right in this a little bit off topic, but if you're involved in a trade like what happen with the Max Bosby situation where, you know, just didn't go through. Yeah. I'm trying to think if we've had anything exactly, we've certainly have had many times where we've had players

9:30in and the medical preventive dust from, you know, sign their acquiring that player. I'm trying to remember if there's anything that Traygots or probably has been, I'm just not thinking into the top of my head, but that's a huge piece and it's a very, it's a very real part of it. I think in the role we live in today, it's very hard to keep those things quiet before that, before physical happens and before it's complete. And that's a tough situation to be in, but yeah, there've been, we've had plenty of times where we were really excited about whether it's signing a player or acquiring a player and then, you know, we get men and there's things that pop up and that just doesn't work. And there's, I mean, you can't necessarily send a doctor to the guy, I mean, you have to bring him in, right? There's no way to, there's no way to, you know. That's always part of it, the end of it. You do, you do, you can get scans and you can do a lot of things ahead of time and we do do that, but at the end of the day, I mean, and the reality is, is, you know, during this time of year, these guys have been off on their own. You haven't seen him, you never know what kind of how. And so it's a very, you're investing as much as we, all of us teams are, it's a critical

10:31point. Well, in theory, I mean, Mike could have shown up and you could have seen some on track, right? I mean, well, if you remember right, he was working toward that thing and so we had to be sure we had that, yeah, we had to work through that and make sure that that was, you know, except to us, because obviously that was a very, very trade and, you know, so it's, it's, the medical whether it's in the draft, whether it's framework, it's a critical part of how we, how we do tricks. So, what did you see from Sean Ryan in the second half last year and then just being able to kind of keep them in that spot now? Obviously, we've loved his first utility. If I'd left have going college, he's played inside for us at Garden Center. When he took over, initially, when Elton got her, you know, playing center's not an easy thing to do. And, but I thought each week he got better. He's such a style, powerful man and said there, and then the little intricacies of playing center, I thought he got better at each week. He really worked in this craft for that. I thought he was a true professional and, you know, we knew he could play guard at a high level, and then that's what went to the second half

11:34this season. We realized he could play center at a very high level, and it just, we were really excited to get him back. I think, you know, Jordan, having that consistency there is going to be important for us to deduce some things you want to do. Speaking of Mike, he posted a picture the other day of him working out with Trichon Diggs, and Diggs is still wearing Packers gear in those workouts. We knew you guys were going to release him because of his contract goals. Is that still a possibility to bring him back? Yeah, I wouldn't show the door on this thing. I mean, again, you know, whereas we're working for this draft, we get to the other side of the draft, we're going to continue to look at ways to improve football teams. We'll kind of see where it goes. I can't keep track of all the places Mike has been, rehabbing or doing whatever, but what's the latest report you have on him? Yeah, no, everything's good. I think we're our trainers down there within that, not too long ago, and came back as really good, you know, and they're, it's daily communication. So he's an exceptional athlete. We're hoping that that that takes over here pretty quick in the hearing process, goes fast. What kind of the way he's kind of taking ownership of that room to, you said those videos like him and Baron, Alan kind of working out with them,

12:35this obviously. Yeah, again, when you require a player, you know, you never really 100% know, you know, when they enter your environment, how that's going to be, that couldn't be happier with how he's kind of an embrace green Bay, grace our team, and his teammates, the leadership that he's shown. He's an, he's all football, you know what I mean? And that, I think that's the thing for me that just gets me excited to see where he's going to go as a green Bay Packer. I don't know why, yeah, where you have a likely target in the evening, Mike with her. No, really early in this. Obviously, we invested quite a bit in him, and so we will be a very protective of that investment as we go forward. How often is Tucker in the building, having to do that in Green Bay? Yeah, now he's there all the time, and he's doing well as well. Another huge important part of our team. Again, both those guys, it would have been nice to kind of see how the back end of the season would run forward if they were there and a few others. But I know those guys are true pros, they're very eager to give back. I think there's a lot in

13:37front of them that want to accomplish. This isn't a contract specific question, but with what Christian showed you after returning from the ACL last year, does it be who viewed it, trying to get him locked up here long-term? Certainly, we would like Christian around, and he's an amazing job to us. We had a process of just a true pro. He's a unique individual as well, and he did a lot of really good things for us in the second half of the season, and that would be something I think that would be good for both of us. We're going to do that, and we'll kind of see how that goes. Were you guys that you were able to get a fourth round with Rashad? I don't know. I don't know if the plan released in any way, but that surprised you. It was tough to look to a part with Rashad because he's such a good player, but I just think what we were going is a football team and made a little bit of sense for us. No, I was in quite frankly, I think, you know, a guy that, you know, 60 pressure, 7.5 sacks, you know, a guy you can kind of count on, consistent all like that. There's not a lot of those guys, and then National Football League. He's still a pretty young player. Probably best football is ahead of him,

14:38so not at all. I mean, you know, we weren't, you know, we weren't going to move on from him unless we could, you know, get something that made sense for us. And again, you know, I think we were headed as a football team. It made sense for us to do the deal with Dallas, but they're getting a really good player. What do you feel like you've gotten the better through this happy meeting and free? There's a lot of turnover here. Yeah, I really like the guys we've brought in. And I think that overall, you know, we're not going to know any of that stuff until we start working. And we haven't had a practice yet, you know, so there's a lot of work to be done. But I really, I really like the energy of our guys that we've brought that we're bringing back. And I'm really excited to see other new guys coming from where they came from and what we know about them so far, how they kind of, you know, how they fit in with our squad. And then obviously, we have a full draft and a lot of months to go before we get there. So I think we're all kind of, you know, eager to get to the start of it and see and start working with these guys. They'll be here, you know, a couple weeks, but a lot of work to do before we get to any of that stuff. Simple look at Benjamin. Where did you see him grow the most last year? How did the role that they

15:41had in him? Yeah, one, he was, he stayed healthy, you know, early in his career. He had a couple of things where, you know, and I think, you know, he kind of was at that third corner. And whenever he got his opportunity to really play, I thought he played at a very, very high level. We collect him a lot coming out of the draft, certainly his size and length on the outside is something that we, you know, we didn't have a lot of something we wanted to get. And so he was kind of a target for us and took a longer that way to hope, but, you know, it was nice to be able to get that done, you know, right as we started on Wednesday. Now you're in our great football. You still have a yellow team. I know you made clear that it's not too long for how valuable is it that two better experienced guys adding to what's missing? Experiences is always good and they got to play well, right? It doesn't matter how long they played and, and, and this league, they got to play at a high level. But I think, you know, whenever you have experience in this league, you're able to draw from that and hopefully you can pass a little bit on to your teammates and younger players as well. But I think we got a lot of experience going

16:42back across the board and guys have played a lot of football, playoff football. And, you know, I know that as we get going, it's going to be important for us to have that as we try to accomplish what we're going to accomplish. Do you still need to add a true number two running back? I like our group. I mean, obviously we brought Chris Brooks back, you know, and we think the world of him not only as an offensive running back and all phases, you know, but also special teams players. So I feel really confident that Fiesta's going to be able to do what we're going to do. We will certainly add competition to that room, but I like, you know, whether it's March on, as we get him healthy, getting going, you know, peer strong there. So, you know, there's there's guys that we really like, but they'll be more competition to come. Obviously, I don't know what's up now. I'd love to tackle it for you, but how do you feel about just what Jordan's at? Yeah, no, excited for his opportunity. I mean, you know, quite frankly, it's first couple of years in the league the way we've had to move him around to do what's best for the team. Probably wasn't best for him, but it was always best for the football team and I

17:44appreciate the selfishness of him in that regard. I felt last year in camp and did a really, really nice job. And what obviously as we got to the season with some injuries, we had to move some guys around. So I'm excited for, you know, him to maybe stay in one place. We'll see if that transpires, but I'm excited for that for him. There you go, Brian Goodocken, stocking the media and a lot of stuff there. The one thing that caught my ear, I don't know if it caught yours as well. And I want to come back to this. They were asked, you know, hey, you've had, you know, quite a few games last year where you guys kind of collapsed. You had leads. And he said, yeah, there's going to be a different intensity way to figure that out. Now, you're never going to get him to go, yeah, we got to do this. We got to do that. But it has a big thing. It's a big thing. I was kind of like glossed over like, yeah, we got to take a look at that. I was going, yeah, you do. I get it about some of the players

18:44and some of the movement and guys that, you know, you don't trade on digs. You don't necessarily close that door and, you know, out in Jenkins, he understood the situation. It was kind of the business thing. And I get all of that. But when it came to home, by the way, you know, here you go. This is what happened. Yeah, you might want to think about this. That's kind of a big deal. You know, yeah, we're going to, we're going to have to take a look at that. You got your sweet ass. You're going to because you can't have washrooms repeat of what went down last year. That's for damn sure. I just, I thought that was all rather interesting. Hey, it is coming up on riding season. 25:14We know coming into this, he wasn't a starter at Iowa. So there goes, flipping behind me. Ben Halleen. Ben, thanks for following. So we know he wasn't a starter, but you also know that this is it. Will he get that extension? Will they pick up that 13 and a half, 13.75, whatever it is, a million dollar extension? Because he's got a big year coming up for him, right? Mark says over on the live stream, coming to us from the cheap seats, he said, I feel the same, but I feel more validated about my feelings. You know, Jimmy says, I feel exactly the same way I felt after the Packers lost to the Bears. This sucks. Nothing has changed, including the head coach. Not some Jimmy. Yeah. Going crazy over there. 26:16the Packers, but I always do this time of year because I feel they're going to pick up a couple of players that are going to help us. We're also going to get three big players coming back. They're going to make this team a lot better. Knock on wood that they don't get, which I'll do for you. Thank you very much. They don't get massive injuries. Again, going into the 2026 season, but I feel optimistic. So is that better? Worse or the same in regards to the way things are? When you lose secondary players and I mean like guys that aren't full-time big time explosive starters. Yeah, you know what? Replace one with the other. Hopefully they have a similar tenor to them when it comes to their production production. You can't take off the field, tuck or craft and think you're going to be as good. You can't take off the field. Micah Parsons think you're going to be as good. You can't. Then you lose your best interior defender in Devante Wyatt. You saw what the run game suffered through defensively after

28:18Devante Wyatt went down. So yes, I agree. Well, you can't do it. You're going to stand starting. No, no, but it's crap. It's crap because there are people that are considered force multipliers in the game. If you lose them, that is massive. It's like losing two players because they are that dominant at their position. Green Bay as a coaching staff last year was a C minus D plus at the end of the year. Five game losing street doesn't mean look at it like year one. The tone should be cracked. The whip. Thanks, Rick. Rick, that I agree with this should be a hey, we got guys coming back. Hey, we've got some guys we've made moves for a hardgrave's coming in. What I saw in Lucas Van S later in the season, the last few games specifically, it was better. So I've got a little optimism optimism for Michael Parsons return. Although they did kind of put the put the brakes on. Oh, let's just, you know, hold off and get and crazy right now, right? Don't get crazy on me when it comes to, you know, Michael Parsons coming back. We'll just have to wait and see. We're going to let him, you know, kind of get healthy at his own pace. So we'll wait. But also when it comes to the linebacking

34:37position, Zaire Franklin, I think is on paper and upgrade to Quay Walker. He's got a better run stuffing capability. Edwin Cooper is faster, better hair on fire. So when it comes to coverage over the middle, we'll see how he gets used. I still have question marks about the secondary. And all honesty, I think they got better in the return game on special teams. I like some of the hires that they have made. Offensively speaking, we're coming into this season going, here's your offensive line. There's no question. There's no mixing and matching. There's no mishmash. This is what it is. You've been telling us for a long time, Jordan Morgan. That left tackles your position. Go prove it. Go on it. Thanks. You had kind of a rough year last year. Let's see if it gets better with the combination of you two over there on the left side. Sean Ryan, go away. Get bigger stronger. Become a force. Own that position. The center is yours.

35:37No mixing and matching. No wondering what's going on. You're the center. Anthony Belton, man, there's a reason they drafted you. Dude, you're a road grader. You get down your pass blocking. You're going to be one of the better guards in the national football league, but you can move mountains, man. And then there's Zack Tom. If he comes back from the patellar injury, I like what he brings to the table. You get more time to throw a little more press down field, little bigger run lanes. Josh Jacobs then has a bounce back year. Who knows what happens with Marshawn Lloyd or anybody else for that matter. And I like the wide receiving core. So there's some optimism there. Some of the things that Matt LaFlor set on paper, I like the team. I don't know if I like some of the things that Matt LaFlor had to say, but then again, as I said before, it was candor. I love the candor. I love the honesty. So that's why I asked the question. I think it's a legitimate question. Darren and Green Bay says Bill, Matt LaFride has people duped in the

36:39thinking he's a great coach. He doesn't make in-game adjustments, poor clock management, especially when the pressure is on. He folds sort of like a great guard. He says, that's not fair. Come on, Darren. Come on, Darren. All right. On the 612, I believe the floor is a great offensive mind, but fall short as a head coach game manager and someone that could inspire or motivate intense performances in play. I saw a lot of Kurt Cousins playing for the Vikings since I live there in the land of purple and shame. What do you think of the reports of the Packers thinking about Cousins as our backup? I'm not a fan of that at all. I'm not a fan because Kurt Cousins doesn't bring anything different or dynamic. He just brings knowledge. He just because he's not a runner, specifically not anymore. He can't move. It's not like going to be a difference maker when he's a pocket passer. That's it. He's a pocket passer. But if the offensive line is better, then it's not a terrible thing. And he's got some weapons to throw it to.

37:41Out of the 262, it says I'm extremely disappointed in cornerback. They ain't done squat since 2018. Well, let's wait because that was something that Goody specifically said. And again, they're going to continue to address. They're going to continue to address it. They're not done. Draft hasn't happened yet. They could pick up five corners by the time it's all said and done. And let the chips fall where they may. Who knows? They're not done. Well, wait and see, but I like what you can only grab on the open market. What's available? So they got the pass rush. But they believe a little bit better up front. They got better lineback back or play. So now let's see. Let's see what else they bring in. They for all intensive purposes, replace Nate Hobbs with a guy who should be a better version of Nate Hobbs with a guy who can hopefully be what Nate Hobbs was supposed to be in Benjamin St. James Plus. He's a special teamer. They bring a little depth of corner, a little depth on the D line. I think expecting them to do much, much more in free agency would have been a little, I don't know. I think you're,

38:43you're a little bit too hopeful if you thought they were going to do anything more than that. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, they were going to do something. It just depend on what was available and what they wanted to spend. And I agree with you on St. James. I mean, he's at least comes with more durability. They, they picked up Skymore for the Plunt Return situation. They still have back there Skymore and Savian Williams for the kick returner. We'll see what happens with Brandon McManus if they would obviously, you know, Lucas Harvestick or anybody else they decide to bring in. We'll see. But I, I think Hargrave Franklin saying juice defensively speaking, I like it. I think I like what they've done using free agency money on a player that's not top of the market stud or player that's released and a good bargain. Like those, that's where I want the free agency money going. Either we're spending top dollar for the guy or I want to do bargain guys. I think you get in trouble with the guys in the middle. I think you start chasing those mid-tier

39:46priced free agents as guys to, to make up for draft picks that you've missed. And the packer is in order to build up that D line and corners specifically, like they're going to have to hit draft picks or their previous draft picks are going to have to grow and continue to develop. This team needs to be a hard nose, no BS coach accountability and much better training coach. Injuries have been ridiculous Terry and Brooklyn Wisconsin. Well some of the injuries you can't stop. Secondly when you say Goody hasn't done anything good this year like what?

43:56He got something for nothing when it came to Roshan Gary. He got a better linebacker training away Colby Wooden. He addressed with St. Juiced in the secondary and he's got more to go. He trimmed a lot of the fat. Got him under the cap. There's still 20 plus million under the cap and I think overall the team as it stands today is a better football team than it was when they played the Bears. So when you say he hasn't done anything it's like no I completely disagree with that. I don't feel like he's made this you know this spectacular move because this spectacular move was bringing him like a Parsons. Let's let's let's not poo poo that because people tend to forget about that and kind of just brush it aside because Parsons wasn't on the field at the end of the season. He got hurt but that that dude's a force multiplier. Tucker Kratfels is on the field either. If they stay healthy along with the Bante White it can be a different team. That's where my optimism comes from. So we'll see tomorrow hump day on the program. We're going to be back at it.
