And the Ben Mallow Show, it's a walk down memory lane, as we say goodbye to one of the legends of sports the last couple of generations. How are you gonna remember? The life of former Notre Dame coach, Lou Holtz, the Golden Domer, who has passed away at the age of 89.
Also, what's the one thing that Lou Holtz did? That stamps his legacy in college football. There's one thing in particular that he was just light years ahead of. We'll talk about that. And in addition to the life and times of Lou Holtz, as we say goodbye to Lou, how about the politicians in Mississippi? They want to give NIL tax breaks to college athletes. How does this strike you? Yeah, all right. We'll get to that as well. All of it is coming your way plus Mallor to the third degree. And we'll get to that here. It is right now. A Golden Domer Goodbye. Welcome in the beginning of another hour of the Ben Mallor Show. We are in the air every where as we stop by. As we are nature's audio playground,

It was a story reported a couple of weeks back that claimed that this day was already happening. It didn't happen at that day, but it's now happened. What are you talking about? A legend, an absolute legend in the last couple of generations in college football has crossed the pearly gates here. We assume you've heard by now news came out hours ago. Perhaps not though. Lou Holtz. Lou Holtz, the silver tongue college football coach, most
associated with Notre Dame, although he coached all over the place, led the fighting Irish to a national championship way back in 1988 and built up this amazing reputation as a master of rebuilding college football programs before players could legally be paid. He has died at the age of 89. He had been in some poor health there. There were reports he was in hospice care. He died in Orlando. So the life of Lou Holtz, that is a good jumping off point. Let us discuss. So the question, how are you going to remember? How are you going to remember Notre Dame coach, Lou Holtz, as he checks out of this mortal coil? So I've got Dr. Seuss, Red Lobster, and Cypress Hill. And we're going to provide you some alphabet soup. ABC is what we're going to do. That's where you start with ABC. But well, let's start with number one. Yes. In a generation, the golden generation of coaches,
which Lou Holtz was a part of, bigger than life personalities across all sports across all sports. And he had Lou Holtz there who felt large in life. You think of the guys that were around his age, in his generation, you've got people like Tommy LaSorta, Mike Dicka, Bobby Knight. These are humongous personalities. You don't have that. Now most coaches are so boring these days. They're very boring. But not, not in those days. That one is a mom and pop. He had bigger than life people like Lou Holtz. And Lou Holtz didn't just stand out. He took the stage. He performed a card trick with his right hand with his left hand. He made balloon pets for the kids. And he always demanded excellence. I always demanded excellence. Which all coaches do. But physically, he was a pint-sized figure. But he had that cape on the sidelines. He was like a superhero on the sidelines. And he was a giant
growing up years ago. And he did follow. It would appear the Dr. Seuss playbook. He said what he felt and he did what he said. And it wasn't always popular. Like Lou Holtz, now he's passed away. There's always tributes coming in and all stuff. But it wasn't double that short. It was equal parts, lovable, unlikable to some. And so you had that. And then also just utterly original, which I always appreciated. And he did wake up the echoes of Notre-Dame, winning it all back in the 80s. And it's true legacy is what used to be called an encyclopedia. I guess it's not it's called wiki pdf or gronka pdf or whatever. The encyclopedia of tough love. And witty quotes that he left for us mere mortals here. And his approach, wasn't that. Lou, you know, there were some people that were not, you know, not big fans
as we pointed out. But in his era, he was part of that, that time where that's how you acted. In this era, you get clout. You get points for being a victim, playing the victim. You get social media credit. And people love to be the victim. They love to have problems. And Lou Holtz was doing his thing. You were looked down upon when you celebrated all your issues. And he said, wow, Holtz was a relic of a different era. It was a grittier time. And I was a grittier time. And he preached self reliance to his players. And he famously won my all time favorite quotes. And there were a couple of them. I'll give you a few of them for Lou Holtz. But one of them was never tell your problems to anyone. Because you're the team you're playing. And I can offer you sympathy. And he lived by the math that life is 10% what happens. And then 90% how you respond to it. And the mother of all
quotes for Lou Holtz. And there's some debate about this. But for me, the mother of all quotes, especially the times that we live in now, there would be players that would bitch and complain that the practice was too hard. It was too physical at Notre Dame, right? They'd bitch about it. So Lou Holtz, one day said that no one has ever drowned in sweat, which is the ultimate comeback, right? Just shut up. You know, you can be okay. Everything will be okay. And I did have the good fortune of meeting Lou Holtz years ago. He was doing some speaking. And this goes back almost 30 years. He was doing some local radio at the time. And he was speaking at a promotion that we did the winning way promotion. And we had like Muhammad Ali was there. Lou Holtz, Terry Bradshaw, his random people were thrown together. And Holtz followed another Dr. Suf's belief that you need to be yourself because
everyone else is taken. And there will there will never be another one like him because the way the world was then as it is now and just everything is so upside down. Now page two here continuing as we celebrate the memory of Lou Holtz, we drive down memory lane. So what is the one thing that Lou Holtz did in all these years coaching, the one thing that stamped his legacy in football and college football coaching in particular. So a big part, and I still remember this when I was a little kid, but a big part of Lou Holtz legacy, the thing that will be etched, it should be etched on his tombstone right next to a picture of a magic trick is poor mouth P-O-O-R-M-O-U-T-H. The man did not just coach football. He buttered the opponent's cheddar bay biscuits with a level of frantic precision that would make a
line cook weep. If Lou Holtz had spent as much time focused on the kitchen as he did on the 7th, like if you worked at Red Lobster, Red Lobster would be a global superpower right now. You'd be like, what's going to in the golden era of the golden domers, which wasn't actually who Holtz is here. It was before that, but when Lou was at Notre Dame, Lou Holtz would look at the schedule and Notre Dame's always had some really lightweight opponents mixed in and they're an independent and they've always been an independent my entire life. And so Notre Dame would play the service academies, right. They played Air Force or Navy or they played Rice, which is terrible SMU when they were horrific. And Lou would get on the dais and make you believe that this team that could be one in six was like the football version in college of the 1927 Yankees. And he turned what
had been a casual hobby called poor mouthing. It was at the time Lou started doing that. It was like a clunky rotary phone. And he turned that clunky rotary phone into a sleek iPhone Pro Max is what it became known as his thing Lou Holtz syndrome. Anytime a coach goes over the top with faint praise for an opponent that clearly blows that's Lou Holtz syndrome. He would heap such contrived, effusive and insincere praise on teams where Notre Dame would be a three or four touchdown favorite and he'd be celebrating the underdog and you'd swear that the fighting Irish were about to face both the justice league and the Avengers at the same time. And he'd hug them so hard. They'd suffocate killing them with kindness every Monday. Notre Dame, they have a news conference. Sometimes
it would be broadcast on television. There was no internet in those days. And he'd get up there and he'd just go on and on about how great the coaches, the school is, how tough it is Notre Dame's got no chance. And he'd say, oh, man, let me tell you something that that Navy quarterback that is the next, that's the next Joe Montana, right? The X whatever. And it was performance hard. So rest in peace to to Lou Holtz. A life well lived for Lou Holtz there as he leaves us behind. All right. So final point here, I want to turn the page to the magnolia state. And this has been bouncing around the echo chamber the last couple of couple of days. I want to address it. So there's a proposed law that if it does happen, it is, as I stated, it does not happen. And it would exempt college athletes in that state from having to pay state income tax on NIL earnings. And this would significantly impact your take home pay, meaning if you're going to play at USC or Cal or any
the California schools, the people's Republic of California, they'll take a big chunk of your money. And they want more, more, more, more, more, more, more, more. And in Mississippi, they're like that and I work good. We work, we don't, we don't want to tax you at all. And so this would be an unlevel playing field in college football recruiting. So the question, Mississippi politicians, planning to give tax breaks, NIL tax breaks to college athletes, how does that strike you? This thing has gone from, hey, let's pay the players, which by the way, I supported to, let's give the players extra coupons. Wait, so, so I supported paying the players. I think that you should have a set up where you pay the player. But this is why we, Kazawi, this is carnival ride. And I don't know that I want to be on that roller coaster. I don't know that I want to be on that roller coaster. I'm not like I like paying taxes. Don't get me wrong. I hate paying
taxes by pay tax. There'd be a lot of taxes. A lot more than you do, probably if you don't live in California, but it's an absolute race to the bottom. And here we are. College football, everyone's slapping stickers on players trying to lure them here there and everywhere. Come on, down. Now in this upside down world, you've got 19, 20 year old college football players who are making 200,000, 300,000, 400,000, 500,000 more than that sometimes. And some of these guys will be at Old Miss, not many at Mississippi State. And they're going to get a holiday, a tax holiday. And that the guy in Mississippi, the 40 year old guy who's got three kids, a wife that hates him that works at the Piggly Wiggly, that person does not get a tax break. That's the system. You know what this is? This is its Cypress Hill insane in the membrane is what that is. It bonkers. It's absolutely bonkers is what it is. Now Mississippi politicians are basically running a Black Friday
promotion for linebackers. It's a door buster free taxes. If you run, if you're 4.3 or 4.4, not student. If that is your 40 time, come on down. Now price is right. Come on. And all of that to get an edge over Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama, and whoever else the powers of the day are, I don't include Indiana in that. Now meanwhile, the normal schmo is standing online at the department of motor vehicles of life paying every effing penny, every penny. And college football for the last couple of years is very open. It's semi professional football. It's you know how you have like Coca-Cola and Diet Coke. It's the NFL light. It's it's diet NFL with student ID cards and this coupon book from the lawmakers in Mississippi. It's just it's just wild, man. It is absolutely wild.
And you and I both know Mississippi does this. And it's just a little more important college football on the south. So you're going to have Alabama and Georgia and Florida and all these other Southern states Louisiana. They're going to do it too. Because if Mississippi's got an advantage, these other guys are going to say we got to have that same same advantage. And then so places where they're never going to get that advantage. Like I'm sure there's politicians in California, like let's tax these guys more. Let's that's really bend them over. That's really tax these guys. So that's that's where we are. And isn't the the big meet and greet there, President Trump's getting Nick Sabin, Tiger Woods, D Shambo. Is that today? I think that might be today. That's later today. They're going to have a get get together. And they're going to solve all of college football problems right there while eating some chicken nuggets and some fries and some some big Macs and quarter pounders. And they'll be good. Yeah. And that new sandwich word of that
burger is from McDonald's. I forget the name of it where the CEO guy couldn't eat it because he you know, he took like one little baby bite because it must have been disgusting. It is the bend mall or show if you'd like to be part you can join us right now. 877 99 on Fox 877 9966369. If you want to be part of the live program as we're here all night. Next hour, we have Ask Ben. So you can send your questions in hashtag Ask Ben. That'll be coming up next hour on the show. There are some things from last hour we did not get to I get to some of those right now because I want to get caught up and not get behind the eight ball here. So the offer is so good you can't turn it down. That would be Logan Paul who did a social media challenge. That's the annoying YouTube guy. Yeah. So who's now doing this thing where he's like boxer or wink wink. You know, no, no. Hey, Logan Paul has offered one million dollars to any NFL player who can beat him
in a boxing match. And it turns out that at least one NFL player has claimed that he is down to do that. That would be Buffalo Bill's line. Men Dion Dawkins has accepted. So Dion Dawkins, if you want to do the tale of the tape on this, are you, are you, does that interest you? Does that okay? I'll do it. So on one side of the ledger, you've got Logan Paul annoying YouTube guy. Logan Paul is listed at six to 220 pounds. The person in the NFL that said, I'm down to fight. Let's do it. I'm down to fight. Let's do it. Dion Dawkins is 65320 pounds. So okay, so how is Logan Paul going to get out of this? That's the question, right? Or is it me some kind of rigged thing or something? I don't know. I'm just asking questions, but I have no
idea. So you're getting into the ring with a guy who's a hundred pounds heavier and three inches taller. And if you lose to him, you got to pay him a million dollars. Okay. That, that seems like a good deal. Yeah. I mean, what could possibly go wrong with that? It is the bayonet mall or show straight ahead. It was not part of the plan. It was not part of the plan. And there's also some value shopping out there. If you're looking for a good value in sports to really cheap tickets to a very expensive event, we'll get that going for you as well. We'll do it all. And we will do it next. We're stepping back and looking at what the human body needs to keep going. When you consider what we know about sleep in

We're talking about why sleep works the way it does, why our bodies don't follow neat rules, and why modern life makes rest so hard to come by. Mr. Irrigation writes since as I listen to you, but I have come really realization you are a figment of my imagination. Yes. That is true. Everyone is the star of their own documentary

I see what else do you have? Gunner wanted me to mention some single way hockey game. I'm good on that gunner. I'm good on that. Yeah. Exactly. Oh, what else do you page down here? We'll read that. Kathy and Madison says insane in the brain. Now Neil brings up a great point. And this is an ideas guy. Neil. Neil says, listen, we he believes and I support this. He thinks that instead of just giving the football players a tax break or the athletes in Mississippi, they should give the only fans ladies of college at tax rate. Is that not a great idea? Those women, what great content
they're providing the world, wearing bikinis. I'll give them a discount on their taxes. It's a great idea. That is a great idea. That's helped the ladies out. Come on now. Who says no to that? They say no, no, no objections. All right. The bill passes. We're thinking of raised in Florida. Wasn't there a story a couple of weeks ago how they're going to charge the only fans people more money? Or something like was it wasn't in California or Florida? I think it was in Florida. They were going to put a tax on them. Yeah, like new taxes. Yeah. Yeah. So Mississippi could become the state. All the the the only fans models moved to. They could own all the only fans. They'd all move there. Be great. Then Ferg dog rights since this after blowing out good idea. Neil Ferg dog says after blowing out last year's NBA finals team, the Pacers, do you do we need to start paying closer attention to the Clippers? They've won three in a row and are playing as well as any team in the association. Yeah. Not like that. The Clippers, I know people don't like to hear this,
but the last 14 years, I think the Clippers have either the best or the second best regular season record in the NBA over the last 14 years. Yeah. Mark from Queens lives in Texas. Now he writes and he says big men. Epic comedic monologue to compare the poor sat down at Piggly Wiggly with three kids and a wife that hates him with no taxes. The hits just keep on coming. the hell uh hell out of it yeah are they still doing that Saudi thing i don't know that's a good idea right now i know and we're not talking naming other than sports here but i don't know that's a good idea i'm just saying you know i mean if you're Tom Brady and those guy you still going to Saudi Arabia i know they're writing you big checks to go over there but that does not seem like a place that would be on my bucket list right now to go check out i'm just saying so isn't that coming up i think that's a big topic right now um yeah i mean they all got paid it's fine somebody cuts you big enough check you go uh and they're getting paid nice guy uh some guy named Lucky sending me a bunch of uh things upset that i'm pointing out the the taxes in california apparently he thinks the taxes are good in california and there's nothing nothing to see here so uh okay good for you i mean maybe you make so little money that you don't have to pay taxes and i i congratulate you if you're so poor that you don't have to worry about paying taxes but for the rest of us that have to pay taxes it's not it's not great it's not propaganda
it's reality in fact i didn't the great and i didn't bring this up on the show and i maybe i should have brought this up but the the free agent pitcher who rejected in offer with the podraise and went back to that but he went back to the diamond backs because of california taxes but i've got i've got this guy lecturing me driving around doing voice to text saying that i'm i'm not right and i'm just saying stuff and you know all that stuff uh nonsense uh some guy named Lucky who's just carpet bombing my timeline just absolutely carpet bombing my timeline with his propaganda i think he's in burbank i think he's over in burbank so there you go i uh yeah i trust me i have my two brothers we all grew up in california one lives in uh was constant which has a lot of taxes in new york which has a lot of taxes but the uh the california taxes it's different so merrill kelly the pitcher by not signing with the podraise and going to the diamond backs
is going to save almost 2.5 million per year over the next two years so yeah that's nothing though that's uh you know that's uh what do you bring that up for what do you bring it up yeah why would you do that uh because it's uh reality all right let's go to the phones again because i'm a glutton for punishment and we'll say is blind scott in a good mood or a bad mood let's find out hello i'm in a good i'm in a good mood that that guy is my friend that's listening that just called in that the guy was talking all outside i hope he did the army last night i'm think he wants to talk in the bottom on the air you know hey he traded to me those snacks but i turned them down the one he sent to weed man so weed man got second-hand blind to god snacks that he didn't want you know i did you know i want to snacks why would you oh because that stuff for me i can't control myself would make me sick you know i mean i i have like uh real issues in life like um where i do stuff that's not like good you know what i mean no way you kidn me i'm you blind scott
having issues are you kidding me come on really i'm calling up radio stations gentlemen screaming that people get kicked off for radio today she's not allowed to email radio host anymore i'm winging out over here like that guy who just called up he's like a doctor i got up to you guys it's like a psych doctor and he like's been helping me like for the past like year like he has a lot of knowledge and then i'm worried he's sick like i don't know what's going on i can't talk on the air because i have no idea what's going on but he just can't talk to me right now he's not doing well so then i call up then and just rail on bed but i got this plumbing project going on i got two wash machines and two dryers in here and it's just been a total nightmare and i and i can't hook it up and i'm that these people came over that new us from the show they're listening to the show and i'm you know if i was the only sense well i just would do it privately like off the set you know off the only sense set you know what i mean but yeah oh sure yeah yeah dude it's something beautiful here in the north end right now the weather's nice everybody starting to get out it feels good i'm a marathon runner
ran right into my back and knocked me to the ground when i was walking you'd probably like that you know and i got up from grinding my teeth and getting so mad at this overnight radio guy i got a huge abs just behind my tooth because i was grinding i'm so hard so like i'm kind of worried about that so i got to really i got to really relax you know but you do that in the past a couple of months i tried to like check in places but nobody wants me to come in there because i have like these critical diagnosis like borderline personality disorder and they're not good for place like that you just deal with them at home but now my mom's coming by every day and she's going to stay up here with me for a while actually i'm doing pretty good i'm pretty healthy i just like um i get a leg you know chill out a little bit and i have like a heart attack you know what i'm saying i keep going yeah i try not to try not to have hard to talk that's not it's not really worth it because of talk with you it's not good yeah it's not good to like call local overnight radio that guy's wrong about you though he's like what you're like that i know that guy tried to spin around the shelf while he used to work in radio he's a total troll you know what i'm saying oh i don't i don't i don't i'm using it there's a lot of failed radio people that get upset
i get it if i was a failed radio guy i'd be upset if the guy in the radio too because he's on the radio they're calling the radio i get it they're tanking they're tanking the competition now they put the ESPN people on overnight radio and they don't take calls anymore it's just terrible there's no this is the only show like this on the radio that's what the Fred says this too this is a unique radio show it's the only show to take calls like this it's an old school radio show there's no budget in this radio show like i was saying like right now just to cut any out it's been like almost like a jv operation i would've been dealing with here so you've been taking a lot of jv operation i would like to come to invest more money in the show but that's they don't listen to me otherwise they would but i think i gotta go thank you all right whatever they don't you know what do you do contact them i have no control over this trust me if i did there'd be people that were here that are not here anymore uh but that's the reality of the situation so anyway uh straight ahead time now for the insta trivia and then we'll get to mowler the third degree so blank was born an apple tin wisconsin became an nfl legend not a hall of famer got his famous
