Well, hello and welcome to the Confused Reckless podcast. Do you remember the pure joy of a trip to the video rental stores and kid for some catabels? Yeah, I mean, you know, to Jetsu, sure it's hard to meet these and convenience of the modern streaming era, but the experience of a Friday night trip to Blockbuster to make the big, sometimes tough decision of what movie was coming home with you was a truly magical experience. We're here to revisit the era and the movies that shaped us and defined our childhoods. My name is Mike Schulti, joining me as always. Two dudes are going to drop some dumpage, AJ Venn, Sean Pryor, how the heck are you? I'm going to drink a green tea all day. Only when I get home for respect for my fellow office mates. Yes. Yeah, you do it later. Yeah, I think you just do it later or after the big stunt. Yep. Yep. Well, everybody, today's episode brought to you by our best friends in the whole world, Cedar Ridge Distillery. They are back. We're getting so much feedback of people that are jumping on, finding out they can get
Cedar Ridge ships straight to their door in most states, getting photos. We're loving it. In fact, I told you a couple weeks ago, people are randomly making the trek to Cedar Ridge just to see if we'll be there. Just to see if we'll be there. It's a very sorry. We are not there like it's cheers and everyone knows our name. I'm sorry. It's a beautiful thing. They truly make the best whiskeys in the world. You got to jump on there. You got to try there 86 bourbon. The original. You got to try the barrel proof bourbon. You got to try a quintessential single American single malt. Anything they make is absolutely incredible. We love having them back. They're sponsoring the episode. It's good to be here. Beautiful. Here's the thing, guys. I live very close. So starting next week, I'm going to go in there every day and every day of the week and have an old fashioned. And then you might see me starting next week though. Yes. All right. If you like bourbon, you like whiskey, you like single malt go to cedar ridge distillery.com. I just imagined some random person coming up to age.
It just like slumped over the bar. He's had his fourth old fashioned. Oh, they got fair for two weeks. Are you age from Keith? He's like, huh? Huh? Huh? I'm not a cop. I cop. Breakfast. I came for dinner. What? Best pizza you'll ever have. It's very good. Boys, September's off to a rousing start. And today's movie is 2007's Hot Rod. We're going to be doing a scene by scene deep dive analysis on the entire movie. But first we got to talk nostalgia, fun facts and reviews to set the stage. AJ, tell me the first memories you had of this movie and what your nostalgic rating is was. 2007, baby. It was a good year. It was a good year. It was a good year. It was a good year. It was a good year. It was a good year. It was a good year. It was a good year. It was a good year. It was a good year. They had kind of, if you were in on Lonely Island, like 2003, 4, 5. Was that about it? It's when like, uh, uh, lazy Sunday came out in like 0405. That was the first time I ever had.
We could be in the call, Parnell just to see how he's doing. What up, Pawn? Yo, San Bernard was cracking. Thinking what I'm thinking. Narnia, yes, happening. Yes, dropping. You think I'm Alex Burr, Aaron Burr, by the way, I'm dropping Hamletons. Go down number. Yeah, you might be. So, um, well, okay, then, but you're right now. This is this is when it's really coming to the fourth. Yeah, yeah. Like, I think this is probably, this is when they're dropping their full album. And Sarah and I was the skits of being really coming through. Dick and a box is out there, you know? Um, all the good shit, right? Uh, but no, I remember, I remember seeing this come through and I was like, hot, right? I was like, no, I'm not going to go see, I'm not going to go see that. And then I saw it and I was like, this is fucking hilarious. Uh, this is a great time. I'm going to go ahead and give this an eight point four. Eight point four, Sean, what about you? Yeah, I was in high school and I was watching all the Terrenceena movies I could get my hands on. I was going through all the really scats, getting the, uh, whatever new addition of Blade
Runner was coming out, just getting all those, getting all my, uh, cinema knowledge all in place. So I could talk, uh, good about it on a podcast. I could talk good about it on a podcast. Oh, good. Um, and then you know, there was, there was the movies that people were passing around in high school and like, uh, Ankerman was one of them. Step brothers was one of them and Hot Rod was one of them. And so I got this and watch it and I'm like, I, it's not for me. I don't think I get it. And, uh, never really got it. It kind of, I watched it and was just like, it's out of my mind. I don't know, don't know what happened. So I'm going to give it a five. Five for Sean. This movie very much falls in the category that we've talked about it before. Uh, a grandma's boy, a role models. The movies where somebody tells you about it and you're like, there's no way that this is good. There's not a chance in world that, that Hot Rod is even remotely funny. So your expectation levels down so low when you go into it that when I finally saw this something, whatever, laughed my ass off because I was, my guard was down. I was ready to roll.
I love Lonely Island. It's going to be a nine point five for me the first time I saw it. Josh Miller, executive producer. This was his movie choice for us, my friends. He says I'm going to save everybody some suspense right up front minus Taljish Gore for Hot Rod is a 10 and I don't care. Normally I try to separate what I thought about a movie when I first saw it from how I feel about it now. Hot Rod makes that difficult because apparently 23 year old Josh and 43 year old Josh have almost the exact same sense of humor. Uh, I love this movie when it came out. I laughed my ass off and almost 20 years later, Leslie and I still quote this ridiculous movie all the time. Well, at least I do shut out. Leslie. What's up, Leslie? What's weird is that Hot Rod feels like a movie that was almost specifically designed not to have any kind of staying power. It wasn't important. It wasn't some enormous cultural event. It was just this weird little Andy Sandberg comedy that showed up in 2007 and somehow it never left. And this isn't childhood nostalgia. I was already 28 years old when I saw it. I had a job bills and responsibilities.
Presumably I should have known better. I thought it was fucking hilarious. Now I'm 48. I've seen a hell of a lot more movies. My tastes have expanded. I can appreciate great acting, writing and filmmaking and ways I probably didn't think about much then. Surely somewhere along the way I should have become too sophisticated for Hot Rod. Nope. Same idiot. And I kind of love that. Getting older doesn't always mean replacing the person you used to be. Sometimes you just add more shit to him. Apparently none of the things I've learned in 20 years required me to stop thinking Andy Sandberg falling down a mountain for an unreasonable amount of time is funny. Thank God. I didn't just survive 20 years. My relationship with it did nostalgia. 10 as he said as a group. We are an 8.1 on this movie Nostalgically. If you're going to look at any movie we've done and the rankings of all that and 8.1. This ties in the 49th spot with Boondock Saints and the Crow as far as Nostalgically how we feel about this movie. But it's important to note because some people don't understand that then we go back and
watch the movie. And watch it again with a modern day eye. It's kind of like the premise of the show. Sort of the premise of the show. So from here on out we're going to talk about it with a modern day eye. Not Nostal J. anymore. Okay. We're going to start with Sean. Important details in the movie. Go. Here we go. Produced by John Goldman and Lauren Michaels written by Pam Brady not related to the Brady the bunch. Yeah. No, not them. She also wrote for a bigger longer and uncut the South Park movie and a lot of episodes in South Park. She also wrote with them on team America and wrote the Smurfs movie. Damn. Music by Trevor Rabin. He did Conair. Armageddon. Jack Frost. Gone 60 seconds. Remember the Titans rock star in National Treasure. Symmetography by Andrew Dunn. He did an underrated disturbing movie called Threads that every person in the political position should watch. Practical magic, crazy stupid love, perks of being a wall flower. Okay. He's there. Edited by Malcolm Campbell.
He also did Werewolf and London. Into the night. Three amigos coming to America. Wayne's World. Wayne's World 2 and superstar. Directed. No, nothing. Directed by Akiva Schaefer. He's part of the Lonely Island shorts. He also did pop star. Fucking love pop star. Love that movie. And then the latest naked gun movie with Liam Neeson. Fucking all so love that. Damn. So good. That's very cold. Cast Andy Sandberg. You're. Look at this. You came your pants just right in my thighs. Cast Andy Sandberg. You're your matacone. Billy Hayter. Dan M. McBride, Eila Fisher, Sissy Spasek, Ian McShane, Will Arnett, Chris Parnell, Chester Tam and Queens of the Stone Age. Originally the script for Hot Rod written by Pam Brady was to be intended for Will Ferrell while he was at SNL. That version of the movie never happened and the project was suspended in limbo at Paramount
Pictures for some years. As the trio of Lonely Island began to gain fame and infamy at SNL and on their YouTube channel, Lauren Michaels thought the creatives could make a movie for a new generation of comedy fans and convinced Paramount to let the Lonely Island to make their first film that being Hot Rod. All right. All right. The original script being tailored for Will Ferrell and with Lonely Island now taking control of the project. Paramount allowed the trio to rewrite the script to their sensibilities since they were the star of the show anyway. Sandberg wanted the movie to have more of a feel like what Hot American Summer. Were that movie played around with its conventions and mess with comedy film structure? However, some of the Lonely Island's sensibility was dumbed down by the studio after filming was complete and certain scenes were removed that Paramount thought were too weird and out of left field. Which is Rod being excited at his film premiere and asking his brother to plow his balls for no reason. That's fucking hilarious. Oh yeah.
Logan. He said balls. Wow. Great sense of humor Logan. Film was shot in Vancouver over the summer of 2006 and just like what Hot American Summer this set was just a goofball of a good time with so many personalities on set and especially the content of the film. The trio seemed just stoked to be making a movie. Another deleted scene involved Danny McBride showing Yoarmid to Cone how to shot Gun of Beer. That scene was intended to be in the film and the production just had extra time. The scene was not intended to be in the film actually but the production just had extra time in the day to fuck around. Nice. So they filmed something. Fuck yeah. Andy Sandberg wanted to do as many stunts in the film as possible. One in which Rod attempts to jump the public pool only to land face first in the pool. That was actually Andy Sandberg doing pretty impressive. However, the opening truck scene truck truck jump scene with Sandberg stunt double who actually broke his leg in the stunt and that take is used in the film. You can see his leg.
It's bad. Hot Rod was at least on August 3rd, 2007 and on a budget of 25 million the film made 14.4 million at the box office but has gone on to become a cult classic. Well, thanks Sean. Now we got to go to AJ. What do you got for us for the critics, fans, ratings and reviews? Well, I was going to ask you guys actually just want to get your opinion if who you think would win in a fight a tomato or a bucket of popcorn. Bucket of popcorn. Bucket of. Tomato. Jesus you guys. Did you see the fucking tomato meter? Shit. I should have had Logan do that one with me because then he would have said something about the popcorn being in street rules and Jesus Christ. It doesn't really matter. Does it guys? It's a 39% splat tied with Batman forever per the critics. I just got beer all over my lap. So well, the popcorn meter turns out one 64%.
And we had jokes here and then you guys just don't have to be the right shut up. Just shut up. No one's talking. No one's talking. 6.790 B. All the movies we've done that ties with mystery Alaska blast from the past and running man. Sean Axemaker at the Seattle Post Intelligence Sir. That sounds like something Sean would do. Hot Rod is a cuss into the comedies of Will Farrell for whom it was developed with a go. I know. I research for. It's like when people comment on a tiktok with the information that will be later on in the tiktok. Like they watch two seconds go, oh, this back. I already know that part. It's you know David Proudlson's in the club with orange. Hey, did you know David Proudlson's in the club? What? Sorry, I just knew that.
For whom it was developed with a younger skew, a cookie 80s nostalgia, complete with a pitch perfect synthesizer score by Trevor Raven and a low key amoeuability that keeps you rooting for Rod and company to triumph. Keith Fips, AV club hot Rod keeps a sweet tone that that's filled with affection for its characters and enough laughs to become this summer's most mildly recommendable comedy. 67 out of 100. Oh man. Oh, it's just somebody goes, hey, you got any recommendations? Nope. Are you sure? Yeah. Are you sure? Well, there's this one. My old recommendation for you. Did you say a wild recommendation? My old to know just mild middle of the road. Don't even know why I'm talking about it. So if I get to it, I'll get to it. Yep. All right. Well, that sounds fine. Entertainment Weekly 58 out of 100. Wait until the best parts pop up on YouTube.
Thanks. Chicago, it should be insured. It's funny, mainly because it's utterly absurd and meandering. And then let's see here, guys. We got some of the bottom of the barrel here. Peter Travers rolling stone. I laughed. Then I wished it was funnier. Then I just wished it would end. Got him. Peter Travers. That's Peter Travers. And I'm Madry Bime-Garden. Yeah, it's incredible. Hot Rod is a stupid movie about stupid people doing stupid things. If you think about it, movie critics make no sense because it's like a music critic. If I don't like hip hop and you make me go to a hip hop concert, I want to be like, it was terrible. Dude, but it could have been one of the greatest concerts ever to people that like hip hop. Yeah. That's why movies, if you're old Marjorie Baumgartner, this movie's not for you. No. The fuck out of here.
Dude, it was the same thing when I was like really into craft beer. There's a little app called Untapped. And you can go on and rate out of five bottle caps. How much you like to beer, right? And the top thing that would happen on every fucking beer is like, is this sound of an hour beer is strawberry and some vanilla, but I didn't really like it because I don't really like sour beers. It's like, well, what the fuck are you doing talking about a sour beer? Why are you talking about a movie if it's just not for you? It just doesn't make any sense. It's super fucking frustrating. Well, I hate Hot Rod, by the way. It's like, I don't know. I don't want to like two of our own horns, but I think we have all have pretty eclectic taste. You guys like your movies. I like my movies and some movies that we don't align with, but we all have different takes on these things. You know, I just think like, what's her favorite comedy like when Harry met Sally? Yeah. She'd know it turns out she doesn't like comedy. It just doesn't. Yeah, you're right. It doesn't make sense. It's like, I like I say, man, I only drink loggers and pilsners now, because I can tell
the difference between the two. And I, but I'm going to rate a bunch of sour beers. Stouts. You know, yeah. I only listen to rock and roll, but I'm going to, you know, I'm going to tell you about how I feel about the hip hop albums coming out right now. Let's just jump over to some later box guys. I think there's a little bit more fun, more eclectic taste on there. Four and a half stars. Hot Rod was the movie that made me want to make movies. He made none of known who said this, Sean. Did you know who said that? No. David Fincher in 2007. Fuck yeah. That's probably not true, but it's. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Damn. This movie. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's like, this screen figure. It didn't mean actually. He's already made seven. Four stars. This movie would never, would have never happened in a country with socialized healthcare. Four and a half stars.
Never sneak up on a man when he's been a, who's been in the chemical fire. One of my favorite fucking quotes. Three and a half stars. So on for Sean here. RIP, Stanley Kubrick, you would have loved that hot Rod. Perhaps. Perhaps. Uh, comedy peeked when Andy Sandberg, uh, with Andy Sandberg falling down a giant hill for nearly 50 seconds. The genre hasn't been the same since. Let's see. That Rod sure was hot. Those four stars. Yeah. It's a pretty solid one. Um, a lot of people are pretty goopy for Andy Sandberg. Yeah. I know. He's peak Sandberg in this movie, I think he's like peak good, good looking. Yeah. He's got a long neck. Good shoulders. Yeah. Yeah. He, uh, he said in the behind the scenes of this that he wanted to look like he wanted to, he told wardrobe. He wanted to look like the older brother in the goonies. Okay. Oh, yeah, that's right. And I think they nailed it. Okay. So, uh, five stars. I used to, I used to be legit. In fact, I was, in fact, I was too legit. I was too legit to quit.
But now I'm not legit. I'm unlegit. And for that reason, I must quit. You just don't get that kind of poetry anymore. You don't. In these movies, you know, five stars. Laff so hard, it rod falling down the, I thought I was going to die. Shocked. It wasn't on the site and sound list. And last but not least, uh, I saw this at two in the morning, depressed and eating tacos and bed. This instantly made me feel better. Thank you, hot rod. Beautiful. I think that's a great sentiment. For instance, I've been so gratefully able to do the podcast full time. It's been amazing. But it's also been a little stressful with my life being a full time student. That means I'm the sole provider for our household. I know you may think by listening to me on the show. Wow, he knows a lot about movies and told me that Brooks from Shawshank Redemption has never seen behind bars until he's out of prison. What a great piece of analysis. He must really have it all together. Well, yes, you're right. But when it comes to my finances, that is unfortunately one of my shortcomings.

Watch the new season of the Hulu original series, the secret lives of Mormon wives, now streaming on Hulu and Hulu on Disney Plus for bundle subscribers. Terms apply. Well, guys, I'm kind of grumpy today. I didn't get a lot of sleep last night. I was having those dreams again. You know how it's just me in a castle and I got a fight, like a thousand wizards. And the only way to beat them is to punch them as hard as I can in their faces. And when I'm done, all their little wizard wives come out and want to be sex with them. It's just kind of weird. So maybe I don't know. I just apologize for being kind of in a down mood today. So maybe, I don't know, maybe a review of Hot Rattle helped me out. Give me a shot.
Here we go. See one. Rod Kimmel has spent his life dreaming of becoming a legendary stuntman, believing his late father worked as a stuntman for evil canevil. Unfortunately, Rod's homemade stunts usually end in spectacular failure and his stepfather Frank has zero respect for him. The two regularly spar with Frank beating him every time and refusing to consider Rod a real man until Rod can defeat him. When Rod learns that Frank needs an expensive heart transplant, he becomes determined to raise the money partly because he refuses to let Frank die before he finally earns the chance to beat him. This failed stunt to start off a movie, guys. Well, I think I think to start off this review, it is important to note that never once throughout this entire movie does Rod end up finish the stunt. Not one time.
He doesn't land a single stunt. Maybe it's because he's literally got a pedal bike, slightly powered bike that needs pedals to start that is so fucking slow and barely when he allies off that curb and it frees frames. That's all it can do. Fucking peak. I just don't know how you can kind of start off a movie better than this. You got the failed stunt which is spectacular crash. Apparently was the real dude breaking his leg, the montage credits, even the cut to like got me some fireworks. You know, and then they stand back and the fireworks don't go off. A lot of great slices in this movie where it'll cut from something to the next. It's just it's amazing. This is, I'm going to make a comparison here and I haven't thought it out yet. So it probably sounds stupid. This is like, hot rod to me is kind of like a pseudo like spiritual Napoleon dynamite number two.
That's decent. Okay. Yeah. Because it's like Napoleon dynamite with a little bit more budget, you know, some more budget going on and a little bit more production behind it all. Okay. Like in thought process and joke writing. And I again, like this is this is some humor that I really do kind of fall in love with very quickly. Again, like you say, the freeze frame of him jumping and what is the? Yeah. What's the music playing? It's just a 80s hard rock. And I'm just like, I'm here for it, man. I think it's fucking fun. You need a movie like this to get you right away. And I mean, they knew what they were doing. They're like, yeah, just just give them a failed stunt and give them a nice montage. Make it feel eighties. Go. I'm just fucking just we had time to reinforce the ramp, right? No. Okay. Okay. And he just like they'd come around the corner of the whatever he jumped and he's all awesome. And he's throwing up. Yeah. Yeah. We're all invincible at this age, man.
Yep. Jaffa helmet. The Jaffa helmet. The mustache. The, well, how do you feel about him and in your Mo? What's your Mo's name? Going to go in as a. It's Rod and God. What's shit? Too many names in my Kevin. It's Rod and Kevin. When they, every time they do their fucking ancestors protect me. May they protect you and they do that grapple or they grab each other. I thought it would get old. It never gets old for me. Got a little old for me. Did it? Yeah. God, that's funny. If it was the same thing, they said every time I'd get old with it, but it's different every time. Yeah. It's different every time. This is, like I even take this back to, you know, us doing a couple good, good comedies in a row here from rat race to this. You can tell that they're just having a lot of fun making this movie. Like you said in your impertinent information there, Sean, they're just like guys stoked to be making a movie.
You know what I mean? And that kind of, like I say, that kind of comes through because they just kind of get to do make their jokes. And record them and splice them together. And that's pretty fucking fun. Pretty fucking fun. You know? And then you have this moment where he does break away from that and he's all dressed up in his suburban battle gear and he goes into attack Ian McShane of all people. Ian McShane is like, for me, even us revisiting this now seem like such a get for this fucking movie. Like it was like a shock to me. It's like, oh my God, that is Ian McShane. Like I thought it was fucking awesome. And he does it so perfectly. He's the perfect one to play Frank Powell. His first line is the, is that line never sneak up on a man who's been in a chemical fire. That's fucking funny. Rhodesian battle sticks. Very deadly, very lethal. He's like, oh, Rhodesian, of course. It's fucking great, dude.
Like watching him in Deadwood and like with a shirt off getting to the dick stuff to something. Like that dude's a fucking brick shit house, too. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's like he did most of his stunts. One of those like, one of those older rich men. Yeah. It was just like, he's like, you know, he's, you know, the guts there. The guts there. The guts there. The tits are kind of hanging a little bit, but underneath that is just solid. You know, it's all just, yeah, you're right. You know, it's all just solid. Fucking lineback. It was like, I got to meet Randy from Trail of Arc Boys at the Randy's Cheeseburger picnic at tailgators. You know, the guy that takes a shirt off all the times as the giant gut. It's hard. I got my picture taken with him and all of his back muscles and arm muscles were just like concrete. The dude was jacked. And yeah, sometimes the belly's a little deceiving on people, you know? Yes. Can be. Yes, certainly can be. Certainly can be. Is this his SpaceX being here too as the mom? Oh, dude. Just mean like, kind of throw away. She doesn't really have anything really much to do in this, but glad she's here, I guess.
No. And again, like just another really great get. And yeah, I think you're right. I think it is a little unfortunate that we didn't get a little bit more of her projecting of the suburban mom style. You know, she's pretty laid back in this. Yeah. But we got so much else. There's so many characters in this movie that are all deserving of their time. I mean, you get to the crew. There's something to me about adults, adults acting like kids. You know, like it's the stepbrothers thing for me where these are clearly adults, but they're acting as if they're children because these guys are, these guys are in their 20s. I think it's supposed to be implied that they're in their 20s. But yet they act like little kids like Kevin is singing karaoke to his like stuffed animals in the room where he's acting like a little kid, but they're, they're drinking beer. You know, so I love that, that unspoken kind of weirdness of movies like this where it's
like we know they're old, but we know they're acting like kids too. It's that, it's that very classic failure to launch kind of vibe of like, you know, kids, kids, kids who are becoming adults and say like they went to college for a year or something then came back home and said, I'm going to take a gap year and then never got out that gap year became, became like four. You know what I mean? And they just never kind of left home and they just like, that's who these guys are. And it's really fucking funny because I mean, Bill Hader and Danny Bride, I think are some saviors for this movie. I'm going to go out on a limb. I guess it'd be fine without them, but they're two of my favorite parts of this movie. They're why I kept watching. Okay. To be honest, I mean, obviously I would have watched it anyway, but like they're, they're what kept my interest all the way through. They're fucking lines are fucking great. Like I can't tell you how many times in my life I've said the line, I've been drinking
green tea all day. Oh, die. Because I used to drink green tea, the lipden white green tea leaf. Yeah. I used to drink that a lot of shit ton because I thought it was good for you. Well, you're comparison to an appointment diamond, I think is apt or I think that was your comparison. Like spiritual sequel. Yeah, it's, it's, it is like sort of commenting on like the stunted growth, like you said to and introducing Isla Fisher and her boyfriend later on in the movie by Will Arnett, played by Will Arnett. It's, it's like, yeah, this is what you can do, but like we haven't done it. But also the unantannable goal of being a stuntman when you're just not, just not a stuntman. You can just take a beating, you know, that I got from the movie, but it's not like they're not interested in that at all. They are just interested in gags. And I have to say that like why I won't be probably talking too much throughout this podcast is some of the gag, some of the gags are just not for me, man.
Like a lot, a lot of this stuff is, this movie is just kind of not for me. What's a gag that's not for you? Like just him fighting his dad all the time or just the, I'm like a lot of it is not for me. Yeah. To be honest, and I can't tell you, I can't tell you why it's not because I love a clock or orange and like Kubrick's the man. He doesn't get it. He doesn't get it. It's not, it's not that kind of shit. I'm sorry they did David Fincher wasn't available, Sean. I'm sorry that Paul Thomas Anderson didn't partner with the Lonely Island to make this come to fruition. I'm sure he loves this movie by the way. But like yeah, I don't know. It's a lot of the lonely out of the stuff, even like their, their YouTube shorts and everything like that. And the SNL skits never, never really registered with you. Not your comedy style. I don't know. It should be though. Like some of this very much should be, I just think that the way that it's told or like maybe, maybe it's the like, I was told I should love this movie so much.
That's a problem when someone gets that told. That was the Napoleon Dynamite thing remember because you guys hated it nostalgicly because everybody, the whole world was walking around quoting it, but I had seen it like the week it came out and no one knew about it. I was the guy telling you guys to go see it and our experiences were completely different. This, I didn't really have many people telling me to watch it. I just kind of was like, avoided it when I saw it. I loved it. Yeah. But I can see what you're saying around this time is, step brothers too, you know? That might be one of the funniest movies ever made in my opinion. And I don't know what the differences between these movies to be honest is there's not much. It took me a long time though for the exact same reason to actually enjoy step brothers. I did not fall in love with that right away because everyone was pushing it and everyone was quoting it and everyone was just on, it's like, it was like even hot topic shirt like had shirts for fucking step brothers. And you're just like, I'm done with it.
Like I don't want to hear anything more about it. And yeah, I think that this is the reason it was easy to kind of fall in love with is because, you know, it's dynamic comedy. And I'm trying to think of an example that I definitely have felt the same way as you. Because I know I've said that like a very similar thing before. Yeah. Of like, this is comedy I should love. Sometimes it just doesn't hit. And sometimes it doesn't hit. And sometimes the comedy seems like a little bipolar where it's like they're trying to do one form of comedy over here and then they're trying to do another form of comedy over here. And like, I don't know that that's necessarily the case here, but that's usually why I can't identify with like comedy in a movie. The thing I love, the thing I like about the movie at least is the group together. It's like all the crew. And like just day by day fucking around around this town. Like what is it? Summer break? What's anybody even doing? Don't even know. We know that Bill fucking Dave.
Dave has work and that's actually the funniest bit of the movie is when they cut to that. I don't know if we're in that scene. Oh my god. It's fucking great. That's what I like about this movie is the characters are so fun to watch. Yeah. Oh, then that's just like, I'm just going with it. Yeah. Is it maybe that maybe you don't feel Andy Sandberg is maybe like a strong lead role maybe? Not even that. I love Palm Springs. I think Palm Springs is one of the like one of the greatest movies of that year for sure. And like honestly could be like top 20 comedies. Yeah. If you like time travel shift and you haven't seen that movie. Fucking watch the movie. Yeah. Or like Groundhog Day kind of stuff. That's what that movie is. It's fucking brilliant. So it's not him. I think it's I think I just don't jive for some reason with the Lonely Island kind of comedy. Yeah. Yeah. Overall, overall, like overall lonely. It's a style. It is in the very stylized style. It's a style. I don't know what it is about this. I'm sorry. No, you don't have to be. I mean, I like I enjoy Andy Sandberg in this.
I think he's pretty great. I think he's got some fun that when he does ultimate punch and like his foot goes first and then he because he doesn't know fucking anything. He does not a fight. He doesn't stunt. He's terrible at everything he does. Terrible at captaining a crew. But that's maybe what's so funny about it. As the youngest of four boys growing up, you had to learn how to defend yourself. Did you have a punch? And the ultimate punch was all I could think of. It doesn't look like a fact. It doesn't look effective. It's not. It's not effective at all. And because I was I was just like, yeah. And then they sweep your leg. Yeah. And then you're just you're done. You know, it's unfortunate. So I understand where he's coming from, but at the same time, yeah, you're right. He doesn't know anything. And again, the failure to launch thing, it might be one of those things of like, and I'm not trying to like beat the beat the horse here or anything, Sean. But I think it is one of those things of like, there was a lot of failure to launch movies coming out around this time. Sure. I felt like, you know, um, failure to launch failure to launch might even have been one.
Um, that's where we got the term. I guess. If it's 2007, I'm going to kill myself. That's a little bit far, but you know, I get it. I get it. No, it's only totally. Anyways, we can keep an eye on Sean and 2006. Ah, pretty close, pretty close. Well, I can't get yourself. Okay. You said it. Not this time, not this time. But like, I think there's a lot of that stuff kind of happening around this time. And like, you know, maybe it's just becoming like very convoluted at this point. But I think I, I, I do think you just kind of have to identify. It's like their comedy style. And I'll get off this whole fucking thing. Their comedy style is very much a dry comedy style with a big, uh, a big explosion at the end. So it's long fused dry with kind of a big like, oh, fuck. You know, that kind of a thing. And it's, that's kind of the, the kick of it. And I think if you can't latch onto it, then it just gets lost.
Um, but I'm, I'm here for it. Yeah. This pool scenes hilarious to me because it shows the ineptness of him and his crew. Yeah. And then they're encouraging $2 for everybody to watch him jump at the pool. That's the fucking hilarious. But everyone's already in the pool. Yes. So they're not going to get $2 from him. So that's a terrible plan. His fucking bike can't even make it up the hill to even get to the hill. It barely makes it. Yeah. And then they show the watch out. You're like, no, there's no chance you're going to even come close to this. And you know it's not going to work. But it's still funny when he fucking goes off had first into the water. The hilarious that it's actually Andy Sandberg, uh, Danny McBride pushing that kid in the water. Like that's, that's for some reason my humor for sure. This whole scene. It's so funny because you know that they put all these boards down. They didn't have to do that. No. And then from there, it's like, it's not that they couldn't have gone like they could go back further.
They couldn't start any further back as there's a row of bushes back there. So it's not even a good place to build a jump, which to my point, you need a good motorcycle dirt bike. He's got it basically a bike like something. 30 CCs at least. They made back in the day. They made a BMX bike for kids that was pedals. Yeah. But it had like motorcycle stuff all over it. Yeah, I remember though. But it was, you thought it's so cool, but it's still a pedal bike. It was. If I could, I, if I could, I could find it and I could show you in the JC Penny Christmas catalog where I circled that bike. It's never got to think. And I never got it. Thank God I never got it. My parents are smart. But I also remember a picture of you with like the dirt bike hanging from a tree by its tire and you next to it. I mean, that is true. It lived on my brother raised desk for a long time as just a nice happy reminder of like, you know, life goes on. Yep. I think. And. And. I did. I, I hot rotted my own dirt bike into, into a tree off of like a forked downed tree ramped
up and then caught in another fork with the front wheel. And it just lived there for like about 20 minutes until like my dad and my family was I was learning how to ride a motorcycle. That was too big for me. They're like, where did he go? He's like, I think he just went down like a trail that was right there. My dad's like, there's no trail down there. And he's like, he started walking up and find the bike. And there we are. And like, you're right. Cause that's not much picture quick. And they, and I thought I thought everyone was going to be really mad at me and everyone was just happy. I was okay. I just, I think I might still have the scar on my arm and they were, they were elated that I was okay. And they just like, she goes stand next to your work of art there. And then go home and then we're all going to go home. All right. But yeah, that was pretty fun. But no, like, I don't even know where that was going. But yeah, that was mine. No, it's just like you wanted these things.
He got this bike. I remember these kinds of bikes. And I remember them like just always having problems. This is the, it's, but again, it just plays up so well to like the idea of like, you just don't get it to you. It's really good. Scene two after an emotional trip into the woods ends with Rod tumbling down a massive hill. He gets an idea attempt his biggest stun ever by jumping over 15 school buses and use the event to raise $50,000 for Frank's surgery. Rod recruits his crew, his half brother Kevin and his friends Rico and Dave and neighbor Denise soon joins him to raise money and promote the jump. Rod begins performing increasingly ridiculous stunts at parties and corporate events. See, like this is the, the, the weird thing with me in this movie is I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I thought his like spirit dancing in the, in the forest was pretty funny and like the song and he's smoking and fucking hanging out and drinking a beer and shit. And then the fall happens. And I'm like, and everyone's like, that's their favorite fucking scene. I'm like, I just, I just don't know.
I, I, I, I love this scene. You know what it is. What? What's the, it's the flash dance or whatever, right? It's fucking footloose. Our footloose. It's, are you sure? Is it, it's footloose? Okay, hang on a second. It's with Kevin Bacon. I'm pretty sure he goes and he's, it's Andy Sandberg does it almost to a T. I'm almost positive. Hold on. And he's like, oh, you're right. It's, it's from foot, it's a parody of footloose. When he's smoking, he's got the beer and he's doing it. And if you, like, it's like, it's like shot for shot. It's shot for shot, even like the flips. And it looks beautiful too. It does. It's fucking everything. Maybe that's what I love about the falling too, because it's just when this scene starting to get old, he trips and falls. And for 46 seconds, the man is falling down a mountain and it's not, it looks like a legit fucking stunt man is flying through the air banging into trees. It's done really well. It's done really well. Kill with the rocks on it.
It looks brutal. It does. And like, that's just so funny, because right when it's getting old, it cuts to something else that makes me laugh. And then of course, he gets to the bottom, he sees the side and then an immediate cut to the high five thing where he sits back and forth. That's how it's done. That's what's done. Exactly. Like, it gets to be about 30 seconds of him falling. And then you see this really, really pretty pristine shot of like, do on like an evergreen tree. And then it just continues on. And like, that's the shit that, I don't know, it feels like, I know it's not the first time, obviously. Obviously, you have something like a like black sheep, right? They did a similar idea, but this is just where they take it and they beat the joke until it becomes funny again. And yeah, and then you get that kind of hard cut. And like, this is, I think this is, if you're sticking around, this is what you stick
around for, you know? Well, beyond that, too, it's just, it's just little mo, it's almost like this movie's just little moments put together, you know, because they have an idea and they're like, oh, that would fit good in the movie. The them in the pool, he's ready to start training and he does the pool train. Hold me. He invites our 40 seconds. 40 seconds. And I, if I'm in trouble, I'm going to ring the spell, but then they ring that bell and they all start going, which was completely improvised. Which is why I imagine it's so funny to hang around with people like that. Yeah. Because that's probably just what happens on a daily basis of them just doing weird shit. Well, it makes me think back to, when we talk to Broken Lizard about how, when they're on set and when they're making movies and when they're writing and they're doing all these, going through this process, when you're on the set and they are talking about, you know, it was really nice having some of the other guys there, like other characters and,
and actors because between the five of them, they're just ripping on each other. That's all it is. It's just them, you know, ripping on each other, coming up with jokes to each other and, like, kind of, like, making things to laugh at each other for. And that's how they make movies. And that's obviously, this is just another comedy troupe that's, like, making a movie. But I think, I think that's a little bit of a downfall because, you've got guys who are coming off of, like, Saturday Night Live, produced by Lauren Michaels and everything. They're used to writing sketch comedy, which is quick hit comedy. That's very true. And I think that's where the disconnect can happen, you know. It's a bunch of ideas on a page that they just keep putting in, in little segments. Yeah. Or they're looking back at the daily, they're like, this is hilarious. We need to keep it in there somehow. That could be it for me, I don't know. Because I think that probably what I think is probably has to be, like, a written joke is the,
sorry, I realize I'm late for work. Is that a problem? Yes. Cut to them at the bowling alley or whatever they arcade. And him explaining the plan to jump 15 buses. That's funny to me. Yeah. But then, yeah, I guess, like, the note thing with the bell is not quite as funny to me. Okay. Yeah. What about him being held under water when he saw, like, very clearly struggling after like eight seconds. It's supposed to be 40 seconds. He's like, he just goes down and like, he's like, and they push him down further. They're holding him down and having a normal conversation about it. It's like, all right, 40 seconds, let him up. He's been, he's been not struggling for 30 seconds. He's like, like, little girl, I actually cherry upsets my stomach. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No cherry. What table do you want me to sit on? Oh, I don't know. Why don't you tell me at your house, too? It's just like, again, children, they're all children.
That's how it is. They really are, man. Was it funny when they were saying, say, what weird? What? Did you find that funny? Yeah. I just like, I don't know, man. I'm sorry. Well, no, that I found that to be a little strange, because that is funny, but I've always associated that with family guy. Yeah. Of course, I wanted to look it up, but family, that family guy episode, the cool hip came out in 2006. So this was just a very blatant ripoff. Almost seems like a ripoff, then. Or a wise, I guess, because that was really funny. We all said cool, hip, many times in our life over the next couple of years. The nice thing is that they never say, whip, they just, whiskey. It's like, I'm going to say the say-for-it, whiskey. What? I say, I say what a weird way. What weird? I say, why are you saying like that? Why am I saying what weird? What weird? I'm saying what. It's just, it is. It's just another bit that we're kind of throwing in there.
And it's like normally you're throwing in things like this to help define characters or give like, character development. And we understand these people better. And it's just them just goofing around. You know, that's really what it comes down to. Well, speaking of whiskey, we got to at least give a shout out to Cedar Ridge Whiskey, the sponsor of today's episode. If you have not done yet, you can actually get online at CedarRidgeDustillery.com and you can see if they'll send it right to your house. If people have been asking, how do we get it since day one? You can get a bottle of the 86 original shipped right to your house. Cedar Ridge Dustillery by some whiskey. And tell them, confuse breakfasts, and you. It's the greatest in the world. You'll love it. Especially when you're watching a movie like this. Absolutely. Well, nipper, zipper. Do you guys remember street luge? I remember it. Were you X Games fans back in the day? No, no. You weren't X Games fans? I skateboarded. I mean, what was that probably mid 90s when X Games like really came into prominence?
Yeah. And I, you know what? I remember street luge, Mike. It's when me and other kids went to the top of our hill on skateboards and tried to lay on them without very much pad padding or anything. And then we tried to make it down to where the curve was at. Basically like Rod here. Basically. Yeah. I just remember those first couple years of X Games. They did skateboarding. They did rollerblading, but they also had, they basically came up with street luge. And then they also had snowboard. Guys jumped out of planes with snowboards attached to their legs and would do like twirls and flips and stuff like that. Oh, yeah. Like Power Rangers. Might be more from Power Rangers movie. Yeah, the Black Ranger. No, the White Ranger. Oh, that's right. Yeah, that's right. Oh, yeah, it was the White Ranger. And for some reason, everyone else didn't have one, but he did. And that, because we need to find the White Ranger somehow, right? The time line, very much. Time line, very much. It shows up. That's, that fits the timeline very well. Perfect.
Yeah. I, I will speak to my, my favorite part of the movie. It's always been. It is that, that I think Danny McBride, what's his name? His name is, uh, that's fine. Ray Ray. Rico. His name is Rico. This is my hat now. And it's just hard cut to them in the parking lot. And, and Yorma's, uh, Kevin's doing that dance. Yeah. Yes. He's all hunched over and he's doing the dance. And then it cuts back again to Rico shoves him into the van. It's, yeah, it's just. I don't know what it is about the, the physical comedy of them dancing in that parking lot. And Kevin in Yorma and Rico pushing him, but this has always been one of my favorite scenes of this movie. It's, it's very funny. I just like how he crashes into the, well, the guy comes out and he crashes into my trailer. And he immediately punches him in the face and starts kicking his ass. That's my hat now. You're a paper that, we'll pay for that. I'm a tricky green tea all day. I am. I just, I got a church every soon day.
Yeah. You bring out the demons in me. I'm always like immediately called to action. And no one asked him to. I know. You have to have a guy like Rico around. You might pay the price for having a guy like Rico around, but you got to have him. If you're in this crew here. Yeah, yeah. Because he's handling business. Oh, yeah. I mean, he's, at this point, we kind of found out his actual role in this crew. He's a muscle. This is what he is. He's by-rotecting. By-rotecting. Sure. But he's, he's muscle is what he is. No, he builds a ramps in Dave's the mechanic. Is Dave the mechanic? And they all party. Right. And I also like to party. My name is Rod and I like to party. No, I'm Rod. I'm the only one who parties. Okay. You're right. Kevin's like, I'm Rod and I'm the stunt man. Okay, let's move on. It says. If you have a Kathy in your life too, at some point you've said, oh, Kathy, if do you know any Cathys?
Have you ever said that to them before? Well, I'm sure I have, but not knowing I was quoting. Just my Lord and Savior, Kathy Bates. Kathy Bates. That scene where Rod is talking to Kathy at the, at the shop there was all improvised too as well. I think that they truthfully probably had very little script in this movie. I think it was a lot of just, that's just shit. It seems like it was more of just like a blueprint rather than like a shooting script. And they hit the beats and then they just filled the rest in along with what, when they were shooting. Which surprises me that Lauren would trust these guys as much as he does. Him being, I mean, I think he was just kind of like, let's just throw these guys some money. Let them do their thing because of the only island. I'm banking on lonely islands. I need them. I need to appease them so they keep doing the lonely island stuff. Yeah. And it makes me, it makes me a little surprised that Akeva wasn't in this more actually. But he was directing.
He was directing. So I think it was more just, I'm going to be the director. You guys will be the talent. But I think your, your Moe was actually kind of a, like also helped direct too. But I don't know if he necessarily went fully uncredited. But like in the behind the scenes, they talk about how he helps like with direction as well. Because those two are really very much a writing duo together where an Andy Sandberg is like the acting talent, you know, is really how it came about. So it would make sense. It just seems like you have Andy the director, Akeva's, or the Andy's the actor, Akeva's the director, and then you have your McCunney in between. He's like the everything guy. Yeah. Well, speaking of floats between broken risers like James Chandra, say cars like the guy, you know, you have to have the point guy. Yeah. And then I think that's they all sort of direct and write. Yeah, but this one person kind of needs to be the guy. One's got to be the ultimate nasi in some things. Yeah. Okay. And maybe that's what Akeva, I mean Akeva's great in the things he does,
but he seems a little more behind the scenes. I think I think he's a great director. I think a lot of this stuff is really well shot, especially like the, the fall scene. It doesn't, you don't seem lost in that at all, which you very well could. Like you could just like, you could pick one hill and shoot that like six different ways, but it'd still be the same hill. They like went different places, multiple different, and did like wire work and everything. So I like, yeah, I will, he's not a bad director whatsoever. He's actually very talented. Yeah. I think I think he that's kind of the unfortunate thing is, not to say like if people who didn't receive it well or like the critics who didn't receive it well, we're kind of hanging it a little bit on the direction and stuff. And it's like, I don't think you can do that, man. I think you can at all. The direction of it's maybe the strongest point of the thing. Yeah, absolutely. Maybe the script's just lacking a little bit in the story is. Yeah, because like Sean says, like that. A bunch of a story. There were more run and gun with like this, with like a shell script, you know? Yeah. It's like, yeah. An all new season of the Hulu original series,

Well, scene three were all introduced to Denise's boyfriend Jonathan. Meanwhile, Kevin starts editing footage of Rod's exploits and creates a promotional stunt movie. Rod decides they can make money by screening Kevin's film, but the audience treats his disastrous stunt footage like a comedy and laughs at him. Furious and humiliated, Rod throws the projector out the window, accidentally destroying the projectionist's car, enforcing him to surrender, all the money they've raised to pay for the damage. How about some Jonathan talk here, huh? Jonathan will our net. I don't know if they could have got a better person for this role because
how many movies have we done where there's there always has to be the antagonist boyfriend of the love interest. It's always a stellar. It's a wedding singer. It's like, and those people are so important. You have to hate them. And almost the phonies part of the movie. Yeah. You kind of laugh at him. You're kind of like, yeah, Rod kind of does suck and you're cool, man, but also you could be an addict to him because he's not necessarily a dick right away. I don't hate him right away, but once he teased, he asked for the flaming Dr. Peppers and immediately, like the first one that hits the table, he takes it before anyone else gets one. I'm like, okay, you're a fucking asshole. That is not proper etiquette. What was the, he reminds me so much of the guy. I think it's fired up is that it's like the two guys who go to the cheerleading camp. And you have Dr. Rod, who is like, it's the same guy. Drives a convertible, but instead of
being a lawyer, he's a doctor. It's always a convertible. And he's just like, he drives, he's like, what's your, he's like, yeah, you never expect to ever make a guy where's the size 10, 11 and crocs. It's like, it's hilarious. Yeah, those are the people they just revel in doucheery. Yes, but they don't know it's true. Holy shit, is that Sullivan? Oh, you show, get over here. I want to call people in shows again, man. We can bring him back, man. I think, I think I've been considering, oh, I have a, I have a present for you actually, Sean, oh, somebody gave me a button. It says gay wall. Did you start putting your address on the internet again? Not anymore. No, but it's, so I got gay, I think we can start bringing back gay wad, you know, no, I support gay wad. That's pretty great. Chode doesn't mean you're gay. You're like, you hate gay people. You just say gay wad. How was someone supposed to describe AJ?
They did exactly. See? That's what I'm saying. Why do you think somebody gave me a button? On the back, it says one of one. I mean, which means somebody made it just for you. You need this. Exactly. There's three out there in the world. I do know that which costs more than making like a batch of them. Yeah, exactly. The one thing I do like is that they incorporated like their video making into this because you know, the video he starts making for a rod is like a video they probably would have made anyway. Because it feels very lonely island in the way it's credited. He gets up and he goes, boom, the captioning says bam. Yeah. Which is so stupidly funny to me, but it's a pretty great, it's a pretty great little video Kevin's making. Oh, yeah, it's no, it's solid. It's a, it's a fun time. Like, and I love, here's the thing. It also takes me back to when I'm making, when I was making, I'm a little videos. Yeah. And like trying to do stuff, but I'm in high school and like, whatever. And it's just like, I'm
like proud of it. You know, I'm like, I'm kind of proud of it. I think I'm proud of it. Maybe. You know, I just can wait for your reaction to see if I'm proud of it. You know what I mean? I got to show this somebody see what they say. Kevin's, Kevin's just sitting there just like, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You know, the dog fucking is like, oh, that one's from home. But that's what surprises me. I hate that this crowd like is laughing at this because it's actually like, it doesn't make sense to me that they're laughing and thinking it's a comedy. Yeah. Or or vice versa. Why did why do they why do they care? Why is Rod so sad that they're laughing? That's my thing. They cut to certain people who were like, this guy's a fucking easy. That's yeah. That's dumb. That will that will get to you probably. But like even there's there's filmmakers out there like the guy who did troll too. Like that that movie's been like taken back by the film community as like a really great bad movie. And it's very entertaining. Much like the room. Okay. I was just going to say the room. Yeah. Tommy was out. You watch it. Like
you watch it to laugh at it. You watch it as like a communal sort of thing. And the director of troll too, like was at a screening. I was like, I just they just don't get it, man. They just like supposed to be scary movies. Like dude, I get it. I get like I get where your heart is, man. But like look what you're doing to people. Sometimes you're getting such a great reaction. They love this movie. Probably not for the reason that you made it. Which yeah, it does. It's hard. But people really love this movie. You have to pivot sometimes like think about in music. Like remember sugar raise first album. Yeah. Sugar raise first album was like hard rock. Or yeah. And then they put I want to fly in there as kind of a joke. It moved people. Move the meter allowed them to make a career out of music. And they went, oh, yeah. Well, that's not what we kind of wanted. But let's follow it. Limbisket. Faith was kind of a joke. And they put it on that first on three dollar bill. Y'all and it took off and they go, oh, that's that's our lane. And sometimes you just have to go to that lane. If if Rod would have just been like, I don't like that. The guys call me a fucking douchebag. But like look at this theater's
packed with people that paid to see my movie. Yeah. And they like my stunts. They're good. You're getting it. If you'd be horrifying, if people were just like, yes, watching it like was straight face like fucking regret coming here. Yeah. It's like Jack. Yes. They were all doing skateboard stuff. But then one then the funny spills and pranks started to become the thing. And they went, oh, the reaction of them getting up from a fucking horrible fall and be like, oh, shit. It's really funny. And that's what Rod does to this entire thing. But he gets all sad. He's a little fucking emo, baby. Well, art art is one of those things that it's like it would be like if we came out here saying things about movies and we're taking it very serious like over the top serious and being like, you know, like making your hair like do this, do this. And then like all three of us sitting here like this. And we're like, we really feel like this movie. Like I don't think people understand like how great this movie like and like the seriousness about like, and there's some deep meaning here. If you really, if you're thinking about it, like there's some really
deep meaning here, especially when you get to the moment when they're like all in the theater and everything's going on. And it's like, and then people are laughing at it when we thought we were taking it serious. That's the same idea. It's once art is a fickle thing where once it becomes available to the public, it's kind of I really truly believe it's really no longer yours anymore. Absolutely. And it's a it's a for better or for worse thing. If you decide that you're going to put out a song and it's like, oh, well, have you ever listened to an artist describe the song to you? It's impossible. Most the time the artist will not even say what they fucking were actually thinking about or talking about in that. And probably they don't even want to talk about it. The song, the movie, the movie, the paint, the painting is the is their answer to your question. This. Yeah. And it's and the idea, the idea is like, well, I did have an idea. It becomes kind of it's open for it. It's like, oh, I sang this love song. And it was about this girl that I kind
of knew, but we never, you know, you know, we never got together or anything. I just always thought of her as a really good friend. And it's like, well, that makes me, you know, that makes me think about my family. It's like, I get a different feeling out of love from your song. So if all you guys were doing during our conversation for a clock or orange was laughing at it. And I got pissed at it. Yeah. Like why? Like, what's that do? Like, you guys are getting something out of it at least. Yeah. And like, I get something else out of it, obviously. But like if if you guys were just like, yeah, just don't don't like it at all. And whatever. That's boring conversation. But if you like, if you're making jokes about it, like that's, it's fun. Yeah. Like I don't care what you think about. Go ahead. What? What? No, there you go. He was going to go back to internet rage. No, nothing. It's just, it's like, you know, kind of like if you, you know, you really don't get hot Rod. But now you mean, as it said, everything, please, please give me something to engage
you with. And now I'm engaged. Okay. Here's your engagement. What do you think about Richardson dancing? I don't forget who Richardson is. He's the super tall Asian guy with the show. That's just. Oh, yeah. Huh? We think of that. Yeah, it's fun. No, it's yeah, it's throwing flyers at people and just going, yeah, it's funny. That is, that is a short video. Like that is a clip that they just said this, this would be hilarious. Put it in the movie. Dude, if that, if that, like at first, I thought it was Randall Park for a second. Yeah. And I was like, yeah, like guys like he's like, if a, if a very tall Asian man just came in through flyers at me and this started jiving, I'd be like, oh, the fuck's going on. I'm kind of stoked on it. I was seeing some of that flyers. Yeah. Like a fucking Mike Shank in American movie. He puts like nine flyers on one post and marks like it's a fucking dude. Man, we don't have money for a little
bit of the great. Now I got to watch a American movie. I know. Jesus dude. Oh, wow. When when when Garrett and I think Kyle, they both brought up American movie. Mm-hmm. That's some inspiration for their no shit. That's amazing. Oh my gosh, dude. The Garrett Reynolds, the him and Kyle, they made that movie. Got to give that quick shout out real fast. Give it up. Garrett Reynolds. Did he say when you're going to be able to see it at all? It's only a select theater. I think they're still on their their tour right now. Yeah. I think they're heading. Give it up film.com. I think it is. Let me double check that because you might still be able to see it. Yeah. It's so fucking good. I was so excited. We got to go see. Yeah. Give it up film.com. It's still out there. It might be it might be gone now. But keep in mind. It's going to come out soon. I asked if they were going to do like any physical releases or they will put it online. Yeah. I'm sure streaming services will be have it. But he wants to do some physical copies of it too. It's just such a great flick and you brought up American movie and
during the Q&A they both mentioned the American movie as some inspiration of like, you know, creating this movie. And he's going to come back and do spinal tap with us. Yes. That's going to be awesome. We'll look forward to that. So we'll see in four things get even worse when Rod's mother finally admits that his biological father wasn't actually evil, can evil stunt man. Crush Rod quits stunt work. He realized he's meant to be a stunt man and reconciles with the crew. Kevin then reveals that Rod's ridiculous stunt footage has become popular online, attracting the attention of local radio personality Barry Posternock, who offers to cover the expenses for the bus jump. What I find to be very hilarious about Lonely Island or the subtle details. Rod has decided to quit being a stunt man, which means he now has to be an adult. Because that's your only option, right? You can't just stop doing stunt work and still do fun stuff. Got to be an adult. So his version in his head of what an adult is is to basically just put on a tie
and go grocery shopping. And his entire card is filled with alcohol. So he views adults as only wearing ties, grocery shopping and drinking out. Buying a fine booth. Which you know why he's not that far off. No, that's kind of my life. You know in a nutshell. Yeah, that kind of checks out. This show is sponsored by a whiskey company for Christ. FYI. That is what my cart looks like every time I go to the store. It's just cedar-ridged bottles and then milk for the kids. When I when I started working like like my first job in like real sales like making real money. And like you still had to go and put on a collared shirt. I wasn't wearing a tie. Nope. But it still had khakis on and dress shoes. And then I would go down to high v-gas station. I'm like 25 years old and I'm buying just obnoxious amounts of alcohol. It's just in your workout fit. Yeah. And probably like one of those cold to go like Chinese meals.
Maybe get maybe get done with like a job interview and he's like and he's it's afterwards. You know, I've done that plenty of times. Not in a job interview. I was like I'm going to go get fucked up. I did not do well on that. I'm going to go get fucked up. Think about him an adult and I can go drink. Yeah. It's nice about that. So you know. Is the end isn't this where Bill Hader tells his story I think? You think this one of the funniest parts? No, I like I'm trying to hand it to him. Just try to just get it again. Just just lining you. No, just please just don't listen to me. But I'll talk anyway. Like I just I this this was sort of like a I didn't know why this was like the transition to get him back into like realizing what he wants to do. You know, I didn't understand it. I liked I liked Bill Hader acting here. Of course. Like he points at the trash can hospital. No. Okay. And he's like being tackled in that. That's funny. But that's funny.
I just I wish that the movie seems like it wants to like introduce this sort of heart to it where like Napoleon Dynamite feel kind of has that. It had it from the start. Yeah. And it feels like it wants to do that. Maybe it maybe it doesn't. And maybe that's just me projecting like what I want the movie to do. And it's just not what it's interested in. But it felt like it wanted to do that. And I was like kind of clamoring for something to latch on to for myself. But I mean, it just being a ridiculous comedy. That's fine. It's fine with me. Yeah. I think, you know, wherever it can inject the heart is probably between the relationship of Denise and and Rod. We didn't talk about I love for sure. I love Fisher's amazing in this movie. And and the she's amazing and everything that she did. She's just amazing. You're so great. Smith, Stallion. Uh, uh, Crimson. No, it's really. Anyway, the but now like she is really great in this and and and counteracts like against all the bullshit going on of like everything they can kind of
throw out. It's not only normal human being right. And I also just in their own zones. But there's something very endearing about a person like a like the the straight character. That is bouncing against these kind of outlandish ones. Yeah. But isn't judgmental about it. You haven't changed a bit. And he's like, yeah, I know. You know, and and there's like there's there's still things she likes that she hasn't changed. Yes, sorry. Right. There's just some there's some appreciation still. It's like it's like she says that and there's like appreciation behind it. It is. And and she's going along with like joining the crew and hanging out with these guys and just having some fun. And I think that that's that's the really special part of it. And it makes it feel like a more grounded love story rather than her being joining into the the craziness. You know what I mean? And I think that that's what makes the it gives some levity to the love story
of this of all the bullshit that's going on. Right. I think that's nice. Was wedding crashers after this? Yes. Because she's very tame in this compared to that. You know, she's pretty crazy in that movie. You know, so it's it's a it's a interesting just a position. Four thousand five was wedding. Okay. Yeah. Okay. Oh, wow. After yeah. But it's it's it's interesting to see her do this. And like I do like it is charming to me anyway. You can see her. I'll show you an accent come out here and there. Yeah. I love that. Well, back to Bill Hader though too. Because he he's in that scene. One interesting fact I read is that it's why I think Bill Hader's probably a fucking awesome dude and would be so fun to hang out with everything I see about Bill Hader. I'm just like I like huge fan. Like I you know, I'm trying out to be that person anymore. But then every now and again, some of it just comes along that you're like, you just like get a beer together. We should be cool together. Like we'd have good conversation. I think we'd hang I think we'd get a lot of kind of how creepy that sounds. Yeah, exactly. Like I realized how much of a psycho I sound. Yeah.
Because that's what everyone's all we get the email that's like, yeah, I should really come in. I should just hang out with you guys and be like, well, don't really know who you are. Hey, can I join your show? And it's you I watched a lot of movies. You should let me on your show. It's like I love you because you are you are you like movies too. But I don't I don't need any more people in my life. Well, people feel that way about us and that's very charming. It's incredibly charming. And it's like I'm honestly very. It's so flattering that I don't know what to do with the intro. Exactly. That's how I feel about it. Let me put it that way. But back to Bill Hader. So one interesting thing I learned about Bill Hader was his he chose on purpose not to wear a wig. But obviously didn't have long hair. So they gave him permanent extensions. That he just he just for the three months of filming. He just had extensions in his hair. It's not like that. And that's those are the things. It was an entire summer and he just he
looked like that. And that's what I love about the later. He has maybe some of the best like outfits of this mood like the wolf shirt. Yeah, it seems like he's always wearing. I forgot to if you if you look at that scene again where Danny McBride's telling the story about the dream. Bill Bill keeps putting the beer cannot do his mouth because he's trying not to laugh. He he'll kind of squirt smirk a little bit and then put the can back down. Wait, during what when Danny McBride's like, I had that dream again, you know, with the with the little wizards come out or yes, they fucked their wives. When he's telling that story, they're both sitting in a launcher and he just keeps putting his beer up like this. Bill Hader was he was always breaking and he like but he had the best breaks. Yeah, it wasn't like, you know, Jimmy Fallon. Yeah, it's like, it wasn't just like, hey, can you keep it fucking together, Jimmy? Jimmy Fallon was like breaking almost like it was like a part of like him being in the sketch meant he was going to break. Whereas like when Bill Hader is like, this is the greatest fucking
man. And once it's gone, it's fucking gone. Between him and Kristen Wigg those are the two best to make break in a SNL sketch ever. Also the two like pairing of SNL characters. Yeah, so God almost ever. Yeah, it's just those two together and watching that should happen and watching him almost break in movies is like, I don't know, it's the best kind of shit to it's so heartwarming seeing him and her honestly go from like this or like her and bridesmaids to the skeleton twins. Yeah, fucking huge fan of Bill Hader, dude. Like just his choices that he makes and it's directing on Barry as fucking outstanding. That's true. And you guys know what a Kiva looks like. Did you see his little cameo? That's funny because he's like, Gansom, he says something hands him the acid puts the hat on and then floats away. So they had a bunch of skateboarder or something like that. He's just subtle choices that they make just for the fun of it. Just cuss. Just because it's like his recollection of. Oh, you know what it would be funny. Oh, he's taking it away. Yeah. I mean, I don't know. I think that's where like I wanted it to be. I think
that's like my my issue with it is I wanted it to be like just stupid like almost naked gunnish car of that. Or just like, why did he float away? I love that. That sort of comedy where it's just like innocuous in the background. Okay. So let's test them. Well, I was going to say that's what I mean about like there's like two types of humor going on throughout the movie. You know, and that it can it can become very combative, you know, to try to guess maybe. Yeah. I don't know. So then you said dumb humor. Then then I think instantly of the cool beans thing. Yeah, it's not not for me. I don't know. That's about as dumb of humor as possible. And it's very lonely island. Of that is very lonely. That is that's the most lonely island joke I think of the movie. I think so. Correct me if I'm wrong. It's gotta be. And in a key, I didn't even want to put it in there, but they were yourma and Andy were like, well, test audiences liked it. Yeah. Yeah, they were like, this is hilarious. Yeah. I'm just very surprised. It's fun. The first time I saw it, I kind of went, what the fuck? And but every time I see it, it's still it gives me that extra.
Let's just say I kind of looked at my phone about oh cool beans part. I like I like get ready for it again, you know, because it's cool beans cool cool cool cool cool cool cool beans cool beans cool beans. And then it ends again. They go cool beans cool beans. Wait, how's it end? He's like cool cool beans cool beans. Cool beans. And does it just cut or I think he just cuts again after that. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. See, that's not funny. The maybe cool beans, isn't that funny. But it's the visual cuts we just proved my. It's it's the visual. It's because of the the video No cutting with it. Cool, cool, cool, cool beans. All right, Logan, you're on. Okay, Logan, here's your chance. We'll each give him, we'll each give him a cool bean and we'll see if you can. Yeah, and also make a beat on top of this. So you have extra work to do.
But if the audience is just seeing this, that means Logan did not even get to this part of the video. So we'll do, yeah, no. So we'll do, yeah. Give us three yes. I'll do a yeah, no. Like those combinations, those. You get three of them. Yeah, no. No, yeah. Yeah, no. Okay, my turn. Yeah, no. Yeah, no. Yeah, no. Hey, Josh turn. No, yeah. Yeah, no. Yeah, no. Okay, so if you just sat through that and you watched a video of us doing that, that means our producers fired. Yeah, that means because we're not gonna give him a note, we're just gonna see if we found it. If you don't find a super cut of that anywhere online, then Logan's done for. And he better put a beat behind it. And now that's your cue internet to make your own. There you go. There you go. Oh, now I'm in love with me. Now we're, me, me, me, please. On the day of the jump, his friends surprise him with a new stunt suit. Rico supplies plenty of pyrotechnics and Denise, having finally dumped her obnoxious boyfriend Jonathan kisses Rob before he takes off. Rod races towards the ramp successfully. Cures clears all 15 buses, but his motorcycle crashes through the stage on the other side. Sense him flying. He survives and the event raises more than the $50,000 needed for Frank's operation six months later. A recovered Frank once again spars with Rod. But this time, Rod finally defeats him, earning the respect he's wanted all his life. Chris Parnell siding. How do you guys feel about Chris Parnell?
Well, the tattoos gets weird, but Chris Parnell is a national treasure. I've heard people say they don't like Chris Parnell. Really? And it's weird to me. I'm scared to turn my eyes to Sean, but I also enjoy Chris Parnell. Let's see what Sean asks. Let's go to Sean for the rules, Sean. No, no, it's 10 out of 10. 10, yes. You lost your plate. Fuck, that's huge. Huge Chris Parnell fan. He's just, you know we're at the end. He's a breath of fresh air. Walk hard. Fucking yeah. I love Chris Parnell. Anchor man. I mean, like he, I'm not saying, I'm not saying I'm like surprised like he never got like some sort of a leading man role kind of a thing. But I'm more surprised that he didn't get more additional roles. Like more support roles, more things like that. Like I'm surprised he hasn't gone on to do more even serious support roles. Kind of like a Jonah Hill type of a pathway, you know,
being a support role in like a money ball and Wolf of Wall Street and doing support stuff like that. I can't believe he's not, he didn't do more of that to like Will Ferrell and like other SNL. And it's perfect for him to be an AM radio. Oh my God. Like a dying art form, art form. And he's so passionate about it. And even in many contradicts himself on that he's like, you gotta see this. Yeah, he's setting that on the radio. He has to be seen to be believed. And they're listening on the radio at home. What is the other thing? No, no one's actually seeing this other than the people there. There's no, there's no video of this going on except for maybe what Kevin might be doing somewhere. But he's so perfect as the like adult that's slightly strange. Yeah, like he's such a good per... I mean, but think about Chris Parnell. He landed the role of a lifetime as Jerry and Rick and Morty, the voice of Jerry. I mean, plenty of voices, right? It has, like he's got a great voice.
I don't think he cares anymore. I think he's doing what he wants to do and somebody calls him up. I don't know what he's been in lately, I'll check. But... All I can think about is him in Ankerman talking about like supporting Fred Willard. I'm just being like, this is a big one. Yeah. Poop with your poop, oh, Ron. How did you do that? How could you do that? Well, wait, if I gave you some money out of my wallet, would that make you... Oh, God, Ron. Fucking amazing. Looks like he's basically just been rolling voices. Like, for the last decade. And if you see here, I'd like to think that maybe he had some quietness than I before and his little residue of stuff. Can you read through? I mean, he's pissing on FM radio and a television. But up here, AM is just safe and sound. Safe and sound about it. No magic carpet there, that's fine. It's the magic carpet. Was what I caught this time around. I fucking lost it. The man, I was a little magic carpet there, yeah.
When does he go? I have the snow, but I can't remember exactly what it is. When, when do we see him training? Is this, he's doing like the final training montage for this jump? Does Rod do that? There's like one more, and there's, he's getting oiled down by the guy. Oh, yeah. Is that clearly a roadhouse? Is that a roadhouse call back? Oh, I don't know. Cause that's for sure. He's doing Tai Chi by a lake and an old man in overalls goes, Oh, that's got, no, that is. That's Emmett from Roderidge, right? Yeah, okay. And he comes over. We all knew Emmett wanted to have a little something with Dalton. It's true. This guy gets to have it. Yeah. It had to be. Yeah. They just took it another step further. The Tai Chi. We're watching a roadhouse and they're like, dude, we should make a, we should make him do Tai Chi and have an old guy like Emmett come over. Yeah, this is how you prepare for the next, for the big scene. And that's as to them. This is the big scene coming up. So we need to prepare for it properly. You gotta prep for it. Tai Chi kill Bill, shit pants. Fucking like five, whatever hit, shit,
shit your pants move or whatever. It's fun. It's pretty fun. It's time. It's a good time. And then you get Jonathan's big exit. His star part of the, of the movie when he says believe me that raccoon would not stop for us after he runs over it. He calls, he calls it a box of dong bags, which I haven't heard someone say dong bags in like 15 years. He's got all of the great. Like we need to bring back Joe. We need to bring back dong bags. Yeah. Well, tell any man and his babe. I mean, like this is maybe one of the most iconic things. No, babe, no, babe, babe, babe, babe. No, babe. And very lonely island in the last one. He goes, and it slices off right in the middle of the babe. That's what I love. They're editing choices so much. It's always the convertible baby. He hits the raccoon. He's like, oh my god, I can't wait to tell Sullivan. He's so psyched. The fact that you're thinking about your buddy, you killed a raccoon and you're like,
can't wait till my buddy. He'll be so psyched. The fact that somebody else, I'm going to go tell Sean, dude, on the way over here, you would not believe I just fucking was just. Absolutely. No, I think the fact that he has a friend who would be psyched about. And if you told me I'm like, whatever, I know. Oh, that's terrible, dude. He's, he'll be so psyched. I think the time to tell someone else that someone else is going to be psyched about that. Hey, if once you get your fucking teech action, Jesus Christ, get excited about killing animals. All right. God, dude. That's the hardest I've left with hot rod in my life as of the last week. So that's it. Yeah, that's a win, baby. Absolutely. Oh, here's a prop. I'm trying to pick some props here, boys. I, it's pretty easy for me. Rico comes up before the jump and hands him the rock with the bow on it.
Yeah. I also got you this rock. He goes, wow, thanks. He goes, yeah, you can pretty much just toss him after the fire. Rico's so great. I want that rock with the bow on it, for sure. That's great. Oh, man. I want a copy of the VHS of Rod stunts. I want his job of helmet. Oh, that's good. How about the mustache, too? No, just job. Well, okay. You could put it on there if you want. On the helmet. Yeah. Yeah. Over the Jaffa. Yeah. Sean, it's time we, it's time we blow the internet's mind because this was perhaps one of the most shocking things that I've ever discovered on this show that they get to the jump and a band's plan. And you're like, well, that's Dan band. Of course it is. That's Dan band has been in every great comedy like this. So that's Dan Finnerty. It looks like Dan Finnerty. That's Dan Finnerty. He's got to cost you money and it's a funny song and you go, that's that.
And then somebody tells you that that's not Dan. That's Josh Hommie from Queens of the Stone Age. What the fuck happened? With Troy Van Luin. With the, it's like the old band, isn't it? Joey, I forget his last name, but yeah, it's like 2007. This is like they either had just released or were going to release my favorite Queens just to make a job in Aeroville, Geras. And there they are. They are. Rod. I mean, you can go ahead and tell me what you want on the internet, but I bet you only 10% of you knew that that was Josh Hommie. I had no, not a fucking idea until like the crads were rolling and they said like Josh Hommie and yeah. Can I, did you know Chris? I knew that who that was. You guys are fucking, you guys are fucking gay ones. What are you fans of Queens of the Stone Age? How do you not know? That's exactly what you're going to get told. How do you not know? Favorite album of all time. That's Johnny Schonney. Fucking know his filmography. Oh my god. Is he credited in it?
So like he's got a film credit to his name. He's got to, right? He sure does. Things the internet already knew for a thousand. Just a thousand, man. Well, it's a high school. You can go on the first round. Thousand minutes even. Because it's easy. That's why it's in the first round. Of Jeopardy. You guys are gay walkers. Yeah. Final, final job. It's everything I hoped it would be. It's funny. He goes, he goes to the light. I like that little part of it. But I mean, you know, this movie was meant to wrap up fairly quickly. Yeah. It does. It's sort of, it's like many comedies of the era. By the time we get to the end, most of the funny stuff's happened. I don't, it doesn't matter. Well, I do appreciate how they, like, did stuck with the character. Like he's, no, he's not going to land this jump. You know, and like, you almost feel like it is. They build it up so much. It gets the kiss from Isle of Fisher.
It gets a actual dirt bike. Yeah, it's never ridden before. We're a bad new fucking jacket and a new helmet. And it's like a superhero movie where they finally are in their superhero costume and driving the Batmobile. You know what I mean? I now know who I am. Right. No, and he does the, the thumbs up. I got this and the bike is so far away from him. But even then, I was like, oh, he's going to, he's going to get back on to fly down. Nope. No, terrifying crash. They, those, the rod, the rod shirts had to be a rad racing. They had to be, like they had to be, this is why because it was a red shirt with black design. I was thinking the whole time, like they had to have seen rad rad 100%. Yeah. They called it rod. Just rod, just rod. Maybe they want to. And they're like, it's a, I wouldn't be surprised if this was deliberately copied or like created after like an evil, an evil jump and stuff.
Probably. You know, but it's because this is one, one more bus than you've looked evil to have. So just saying guys. But yeah, no, I think it had to, like you say, Mike, it had to wrap up kind of nice thing. It's fine. And then you don't come for, you don't come for comedy movies for like the final five minutes, usually it's kind of, we just, we're gonna have something nice enough. They do, they do hit the mark for Frank and he, he does get his fight with Frank. Yep. Yeah. And the final, final shit move. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, like it's an end on him going, oh my god. Ian McShade. He's a brick shit house. He just shit his house. That's right. Well, boys, is there anything else you want to say about hot rod? That's it. My friends, we have dissected this movie seen by scene. It's time to give it our modern day ratings. It'll be etched in stone. You can see our ratings of all the movies we've done at ConfusedBreakfast.com. If you loved hot rod, you could have had your name and your thoughts on this movie read on this episode. But you didn't. So we got to go with the ones that we have in there. Before we drop our scores, AJ, what do you got in the private chat? There's a couple if we want to do those. I can take one if you want to take one. Yeah, sure, man. Here we go. You know what? I'm going to jump on down to Mr. Billy Pilgrim. Billy said firstly, as a scene, as a scene, the foot loose homage is a damn 10. As is the, you're the voice scene. Yes. This cast is excellent and so much fun together. Bill Hader and Danny McBride going back and forth off one another is a delight in every scene. Will our net base playing basically G joke from arrest development.
But with the douchebag level somehow dialed up even higher. I'll official as one of the all time great girls next door. Good call. Yeah. I just want to go on record with that one. I haven't even mentioned Andy Sandberg, your, your my Ian or sissy. They all just nail it. This movie is dumb. No question. The cool beans is a prime example, but I do not care. I love it. I loved watching it the first time and I loved watching it yesterday showing it to my 11 year old for the first time. The kind of dumb comedy that doesn't take itself serious at all, but is wildly entertaining. You mentioned a timestamp on a, on a movie in the 80s and 90s all the time. This screams 2007 in the best way. Watching the trailer for the Odyssey a couple of weeks ago, everything was so damn serious and heavy. I would kill to see a comedy like this on the big screen again. Nostalgic 8.1, a modern 10 prop coin flip between the dolphin necklace. Yeah.
Facts. Kevin's Healy's and great point about the Odyssey. I do, I do like it. My memory will affect I feel obviously, but like I do think I wish movies like this would get made. If it's still out there, go see Super Troopers 3. If you're looking for a comedy on the scene, get out there and see it. I'm sure. Yeah. Punchable. The guy that yells, this guy's a moron in the theater. Do you want the other one? Hugable. Right below it. Oh, sorry. Hugable face. In portrait sense. In portrait sense. That isn't my hugable as well. Sorry. It was an ad on there. Uncle Buck Hunter. I needed to think last night so I galloped into a wooded Glenn and after punch dancing out my rage and suffering an extremely long and very painful fall, I realized what has to be done. I had to have a couple beers and pop in my hot rod DVD. Listen, it's not Shawshank, but it's one of those movies you can put on and enjoy the hilarious ridiculousness. It's a tale as old as time. Man's Stepdad has been dying all his life. Man wants to get him to better so he can kill him.
You put it on for the so dumb, it's funny comedy aspect. I put it up there with Anchorman and Stepbrothers. It may not be my all time favorite comedy, but you can bet your ass I'll put it on after a night of drinking and laugh at all the hilarity that ensues. Now, Mike Shawton and AJ, I'm going to get you, I'm going to get you, you better you old sacks of shit. And then I'm going to uncork the ass beating of a lifetime on you and you will respect me. Peace. The Stolgic 8.5 Modern 7.8 prop rods final jump suit punch Sullivan. It was fun. It was fun. Sullivan. Nice. That's a good punch. All right. Shawton, what do you think, man? You were a little low on this in the conversation. How do you feel? I still just think this is not for me and it is just just my own dumb personal preference of comedies, I guess. This is I I have to say this is like I missed pop punk and I missed this movie just the same. I missed it all. Everyone fucking lows pop punk. I don't get it.
I can't deal with it. Hot rod is kind of the same to me, to be honest, but I do appreciate a lot of things about it. I appreciate that there this group was just stoked to be making a movie. It seems like they had a lot of fun doing it. There are certain parts to it that I do really really like and do find really funny. But I do I will consider that this is probably going to be a rower for me is if I watch it again later on in life, I'll probably find it more funny than I did this time. But for now, I am I'm going to be a 5.9. 5.9 for Sean AJ. All right. Well, a toughy. This is a movie that I think I think it's it's a super fun movie. And for all the same similar reasons like, you know, why Sean thinks he should love it or whatever is the reason I do love it. And the reason I say it's a great analogy is because I like to pop punk and everything.
Yeah. It hit me at the right time. He fell into it at the right time. But I know exactly what you're talking about when you have things that just don't seem to coincide somehow, even though it feels like it should. I've said that before. Yeah. And I want to reiterate that like people who like this, I don't like it just because you like you like you love it. You know, it's not that's not the reason. It just doesn't for some reason work for me. It's not because of your love for it. I love that you love it. It's just not there for me. And this, the thing about this movie is, and maybe this, this does say something to the year is made 2007, 2007 to me feels like peak DVD owning era. Absolutely. And I mean like directors cuts, directors cuts, blue rays are starting to really make their mark, you know, and, and seeing a DVD. This is like one of those movies that was a DVD for me.
Like it's just like you owned the DVD finally. There was no other way to have this movie. There wasn't VHS and it wasn't really, it wasn't streaming. It was you owned a fucking DVD of this movie. And that's for a lot of movies of this era. And that's why I think it feels so good. And I really think that there is something to be said about the comedy group going out, making the movie they finally want to make and they're getting the backing to do it and the support to do it. And you know what? This, the Wayne's World could have been this exact same type of movie. Who knows? Right. Why does Wayne's World work and this one doesn't fit? Right. I don't know. And, and I think that that's an interesting, like, I think that that would be an interesting thought analysis, right? SNL movies in, in them, by themselves are an interesting thought analysis. But I digress, like, the comedy is here, everything is here. I think it's shot very well. I think it's directed well. I think the writing is the part that lacks because they had a shell of an idea.
They needed to know how to finish it up. And I love that they stuck to at least one thing on this and that's that run never fucking lands a movie or a fucking trick, a move. He never lands a stunt. And I really like that about it. I think that, yes, I can understand why it gets old and I think this becomes what I like to call a background movie once you've seen it three times. It becomes a background movie and I'm okay with that. And that's why I think this has to fall right at a seven point, seven, four, seven, four for AJ. Yeah. You got seven point six, four, sorry. Seven point six, four for AJ. Seven point six, four for AJ. Yeah, this is a tough one because it's hard to separate, like, just funny jokes and funny
bits as with a whole movie. And somebody nailed it earlier when they were like, wait for the YouTube clips to come out. This is like I almost enjoy just watching the cool beans scene or then going to just the Rico, like the best of Rico. I prefer to watch this is vine comedy man. It's vine comedy SNL shorts, skit writing goods watching the movie straight through is not necessarily that great. It's more of a background movie. But when it's funny, it's unbelievably funny. And I love the joy that these guys probably had making it. I love Lonely Island. I was like a 9.5. I have to be realistic of the movies I said, like Napoleon Dynamite, role models, Grandma's boy, the movies that I didn't think I would like. Those ones are slightly better than this. They are slightly better than this just because the story is better. It's not just a bunch of little skips. So I still very much enjoy this movie though. And on the thing of comedies for my list, it's fairly high at a 7.3.
Josh Miller says now the modern day score gets a little more complicated. Not because I like Hot Rod less because I understand it better. When I first watched it, I just knew it was funny. Now I can see how carefully stupid it actually is. Hot Rod isn't an accidental mess. It's an incredibly precise comedy disguised as a movie made by people who have absolutely no idea what they're doing. It really operates at exactly the wrong level of seriousness. Rod genuinely believes becoming a stuntman will prove his worth to Frank. Frank treats their relationship like they're in a serious family drama. Denise somehow accepts all of this. And Rod's friends enthusiastically support plans that should get everyone involved hospitalized. And nobody knows they're in a comedy. That's why it works. The movie starts setting that tone almost immediately. Did you reinforce the takeoff ramp? No, we didn't have time. Cool. It's a lovely Hot Rod in three lines. The mountain fall works for the same reason. At first it's funny because Rod falls. Then it's funny because he keeps falling. Then it goes on so long it stops being funny and somehow becomes funny again.
The flyers do the same thing. Richardson doesn't hand them out. He throws them into the wind repeatedly, eventually launching an entire stack at two strangers and walks away completely satisfied with the job he's done. Every character lives inside his own ridiculous logic. Ian McShane makes it even better because he plays Frank completely straight. Sissy Spaceck brings legitimate mom energy to a family of lunatics. And then there's Danny McRide watching Rico now knowing that guy would eventually give us Kenny fucking powers, vice principals and the righteous gemstones. You can already see the voice forming the confidence, hostility and absolute certainty that he's the smartest man in every room. That's what I appreciate most now. Hot Rod knows exactly what kind of stupid it wants to be. The music's too big. The emotions are too sincere. The characters are too confident. The dialogue is idiotic and everyone commits to it completely. I used to think loving a movie meant I had to argue that it was objectively great. I don't anymore. Hot Rod isn't the godfather but I genuinely think it's a masterpiece of tone and commitment.
And sometimes our lives in our world are serious enough that spending 100 minutes watching something this completely fucking stupid has real value. I finish Hot Rod feeling good? That counts for a lot. Modern day score 9.8 because maybe 10s shouldn't exist. Cool beans. No, no, no. Cool beans. Josh, I argue to you that you should, if you love it that much, you should have a 10. Please, please change your rating to 10. Like beautiful. You opened up something for me, honestly. The thought that Rod never lands a trick and all these people just don't know what they're doing in this movie. And the only island is making their first movie and don't know what the fuck they're doing. You know, it's fucking great. Beautifully put. As a group, we are a 7.66 that feels pretty nice. It is not as funny as Napoleon Dynamite and Monty Python holy grail, but it is funnier than Ace Ventura and the jerk. I guess funny is the wrong term to use, but it's a better movie than this.
No, no, we know what you said, Mike. We all heard you. That's where she's going to land. Wonderful stuff. Wonderful stuff, Josh. Like, yeah, right? That's how I'll watch this movie next with that with that in mind. Yeah. Well, we hope you enjoyed the episode. Thanks for being here. Tune in next week.
