Early Saturday morning, just before 3 a.m. on April 18th, 2026, firefighters in Overland Park rushed to Sheridan Ridge Apartments. On the 8300 block of Farley Street, after a blaze broke out in one unit, a family of five two adults and three kids aged 11, 10, and 5 got rushed to the hospital. Tragically, the 11-year-old boy later died from his injuries. That brave kid shielded his five-year-old sister during the chaos, a real hero move that showed his heart. Crews arrived to heavy smoke and flames from the two-story building, pulling folks from the roof, a second-four bathroom, and outside. One adult and three children went in critical, while the other adult was stable. The community stepped up quick with a go-fun me from mom Andrea Heinz, her fiance, and the surviving kids, pulling in nearly $7,000 in just three days.
