Helping Hand Mission Battles Fire, Seeks Community Support

0:00From Durham, this is your March 2nd update. A fire broke out early Sunday morning at the Helping Hand Mission's office and storage building on Rock Quarry Road in Raleigh. The nonprofit, which has helped the community for over 50 years by handing out food, clothes and supplies, saw heavy damage to its main operations. Area around 6.30 a.m. No one got hurt thanks to a fast response from fire crews. Firefighters sent about 40 people to the scene at first, then called in 25 more because of the building size and all the items stored, there. Crews stopped the flames from spreading further inside, though the fronts of the worst hit. Sylvia Wiggins, the founder and CEO, learned about her first thing and called the day devastating. The blaze destroyed boxes ready for families in need, office records, and contact lists for people they help. This mission has long supported folks facing tough times, and now they're dealing with a big setback since the building is unsafe.
