About this episode
It’s easy to move through life assuming our everyday comforts are just “normal.” The paycheck arrives. The lights stay on. The car starts. But what happens when we pause long enough to recognize that these aren’t guarantees—they’re gifts?
In this episode of HEARTBEAT, we’re reminded that gratitude has a way of changing us. When we recognize what we’ve been given—especially what we didn’t earn—something shifts. Gratitude loosens our grip, softens our hearts, and opens the door to generosity.
Through a simple moment of unexpected kindness, this devotion highlights a powerful truth: when gratitude shows up first, generosity is never far behind. Open hands don’t just receive blessings—they pass them along.
Don’t forget: You can also download our free devotional, “Mind, Body & Soul,” designed to help strengthen your walk with God through Scripture, prayer, and practical habits.

That at some point, this is going to end in two hours. It'll end good if I'm on the ground somewhere walking around with the testimony. It'll end great if he pulls the trigger for me. It will end great. That day, Jim, experienced the power of prayer and witnessed just how mighty the name of Jesus is. If you want to hear this full story, tune in at Samaritan's Purse.org-flashlisten. Life audio From the Salvation Army, welcome to Heartbeat. Have you ever caught yourself taking your blessing for granted? Like, everything you have is normal instead of a gift? The page that gets deposited, the electric bill is paid, your car starts and you barely notice. But a while back, I had a month where money was tight. I'm really tight. And a friend unexpectedly paid for a meal.
1:00I don't think flashy just tacos. But I remember sitting there thinking, wow, I didn't earn this. This was given to me. The very next moment, I had the chance to do the same for someone else. I did. That moment was a reminder, where attitude showed up first and generosity followed. Because when you realize how much God has given you that you didn't deserve, you stop clenching your fists so tightly. Gratitude opens your hands and open hands don't just receive. They give.
