Gremlins' Lost Cut: Secret Scenes & Studio Battles

0:00On May 2nd, director Joe Dante just screened a secret two-and-a-half-hour cut of the 1984 holiday horror hit, Grimland's For Some Top, horror filmmakers. This early version is way different from the final movie we all know, with pencil sketches standing in for unfinished scenes and some characters. Completely missing. For instance, there's no elderly Chinese woman who helps the dad character before he hits the familiar shop owned by Kyloog's role. A bunch of other moments got trimmed or reworked before release. That famous monologue where Kate tells Billy about finding her dad dead in the chimney dressed as Santa. Yeah, that almost got axed entirely. The studio pushed hard to cut it early on, but Dante and screenwriter Chris Columbus loved it too much to let go. They even got Steven Spielberg on board to fight for keeping it. Turns out, it was inspired by a creepy cartoon from Gahan Wilson showing a skeleton, Santa stuck in a chimney.
