GOOD SHIFT- Transformational Gardening Vs. Weed Whacking - E206
About this episode
What if the reason certain problems keep coming back isn’t that you haven’t fought them hard enough—but because you haven’t changed the environment that allows them to thrive?
In this Good Shift, Dr. JC explores the difference between living like a Weed Whacker and becoming a Transformational Gardener. Drawing from his own journey with Stage 4 cancer, he challenges the instinct to spend our lives attacking symptoms, habits, stressors, relationships, and circumstances we don’t want—while overlooking the terrain beneath them.
Because lasting transformation isn’t always about fighting harder. Sometimes it’s about changing the soil.
What are you repeatedly trying to eliminate from your life that might be asking you to change the environment in which it keeps growing?
Stop whacking. Start gardening.

Hey everybody, this is Dragon. This is part of our new series called Good Shift, where we come through the Makesense sub-stack and pick our favorite articles and bring them to you live right here, once a week on The Makesense with Dr. JC Podcast. We hope that you enjoy this, because this is some good shift. Have you noticed that the world that we live in has been doing most of the thinking for you? That your beliefs, perceptions, reactions, fears, and doubts have been shaped by unsolicited outside noise? How easy it's been for you to slip into that default, sleepwalking mode and label it as life and reality? Yeah, that ends here. Welcome to The Makesense with Dr. JC Podcast. This is your opportunity to start thinking for yourself, reclaim control, and step back into that role as the shot-caller and dominant force of your own reality. It's when you change the way that you look at things, that the things that you look at begin to change. So let's wake up, let's rise up, and let's make sense of why and how shift happens.
Makes sense. This is some good shift. I've been spending a lot of time lately, thinking about the difference between being a weed whacker and being a transformational gardener. Think about it. Most of us spend our entire lives in weed whacker mode. What I mean by that is, we wake up, we see the things that we don't want in our lives, the disease, the bad habits, the unsupportive friends, the financial stress, the anxiety, and on and on. And what do we do? We attack them, we whack at them with all of our might, trying to cut them down so we can finally have some peace. But here's the thing about weeds. If the soil is designed to grow them, well, then they will always come back, won't they? And what that means is that weeds thrive in neglected terrain. I learned this from my own personal journey with stage four cancer. If cancer has successfully manifested and grown in my body, well, then it will keep coming back until its terrain and soil
have been changed. On the other hand, the gardener of transformation has a completely different vantage point and strategy. The gardener doesn't obsess over the weeds. Instead, the gardener obsessively focuses on the terrain and the soil. The gardener focuses on the environment, the people that they allow into their social circle, the food that sits in their kitchen cabinets, the inputs that they allow into their mind. They know that if they build an environment so rich in health, so dense in nutrients, and so resilient, the weeds simply cannot thrive anymore. They lose their interest, they starve. My question to you is this, are you spending your energy and focus whacking at things that you don't want? Or are you architecting the terrain where those things have no place to grow? It's pretty simple. Stop whacking, start gardening. Make sense? That's it for today. To support the Make Sense with Dr. JC Podcast,
