The New York Giants are struggling to build a strong roster from within,

ranking 30th in the NFL for homegrown talent.

They have just 32 players originally drafted and developed by the team,

making up about 42% of their roster.

This heavy dependence on outside acquisitions has kept them far from playoff contention.

Teams at the bottom, like the dolphins with 28 homegrown players and the Titans with 26,

also missed the postseason last year.

Meanwhile, top teams such as the Rams with 44, the Seahawks with 45 and the Bills with 42,

boast much higher percentages and deeper runs in the playoffs.

Giants fans have seen the impact firsthand with the team's roster woes contributing to years

of mediocrity despite coaching changes.

The lack of a solid draft and develop approach means they're always playing catch up.

Data highlights their draft shortcomings.

They lead with 12 first round picks on the roster,

but have only three second rounders, the second fewest,

in the league and eight from the third round.

Successful teams generally thrive by consistently building cores this way,

though exceptions like the chiefs exist.

With new head coach John Harbock gaining more input on roster decisions,

there's hope the Giants can shift toward retaining and developing their own.
