Thank you so much. It was another pinch me moment for sure. It's kind of an indescribable feeling and you try to stay in the moment as much as you can and stay focused. Riggly ended up being really fun night as we know and as we're seeing kind of circulate here

2:04:28on social media with all the stars in the building but just truly honored each and every time and really couldn't appreciate it more. Yeah, so two times so that's one more than me. I'm jealous. I'm 안vious. I didn't once last year. I hope to do it again sometime but even if I never do my god it's like it's a big room. And I don't even like to use the word nervous because I mean, you get to this point in your career and sometimes you get amped up for a show and I'll be a little nervous before a certain special or whatever we do on live television. But I cannot even comprehend the amount of nerves I would have to sing in front of a crowd at Riggly Field. What do you, how do you like manage that? And is it the same different? Like how are you feeling versus when you're doing live television at CBF Chicago? It's much different. It is not the same whatsoever. I'd be aligned to you if I said that I don't still try to manage some of the nerves when it comes to singing just because, you know, television, we're doing it.

2:05:29We're getting multiple reps and doing it day to day. And the national anthem is not something that I'm doing every single day. I've done it quite a bit in my life. But yes, Riggly Field, the room is definitely unique. Because, as I mentioned, something I've only done twice and even yesterday. I've had a little bit of trouble in the beginning getting my breath underneath me. And I hope to just continue to make that get easier and easier. But the moment is big. And there's very few performances where it's just your voice in a microphone for two minutes. And, you know, just credit to anybody who's ever performed it. Because it is a beast of a song vocally as well. And just a lot of fun, though, too. So it's one of the first things that people tend to ask me is how nervous do you get the answer? The nerves are there. I'd be lying if I said they weren't. Exiting and excitement are experienced exactly the same physiologically. So it's intellectually how we frame that. Excitement is good. Yeah. You know, so you just got to realize

2:06:29when you're feeling that anxiety, no, no, no, that's excitement. But, you know, I'm a sucker as a performer, as a lifelong performer, right? I would use it. You guys are talented singers, though. I am not. So I would be, they would not even hand me the microphone. But you can relate to that feeling before the camera goes on. You're like, sometimes when you're feeling a little bit like things have changed on the fly. And you're like, OK, we're just going to go out there and roll up there, right? It's exciting. Yeah. That's why you get in the business. At Jory, did you interact with your on the field and they're right behind the dugout? Are that incredible group of Chicago athletes, Caleb Wilson, Caleb Williams, Modus Bzealous, and also Cole Bennett was there. He's the music video director and the executive. A lyrical lemonade guy, a Chicagoan as well. Did you interact with that group? I did not interact with that group. So I was actually at the game with my family, which is a rarity, as you guys know in this business as well, right? We don't always get to go to games in a different capacity when we're not working. But I will say we were in a section,

2:07:31a very close section, to where they were at and saw them kind of go down there. So, you know, I made a point of like, oh, yeah, hey, I think that's, you know, so and so. So to see the videos come out the next day and then to see that moment happen, like not too far, you know, from where we were, was definitely fun. And just what a time to be in Chicago, if there is ever more of a time to brag, like Chicago has always been known for having such a great sports sound, right? This is not news to anybody. But truly what's going on here right now is special. And that was just all, you know, shown in kind of one little video there with all the stars around town. And then supporting each other, like it was just it's been really fun to see and I kept watching that video probably like 20 times already today. So it was fun. Jory, you are, I mean, you're born and raised in Crystal Lake. You cover your hometown teams and you joined the sports team at CBS Chicago and I think it was like October of 22. When you think of this like your journey in those moments, I mean, it's one thing, this is a real experience of singing the national anthem at Rigglyfield.

2:08:33But to cover these teams that you grew up cheering for and were immersed in, how special has it been? And what have been some of the moments that stand out to you? Like, man, here I am, the hometown kid just covering Chicago sports. I know there's a few of us in the market that are from here, but I will say they still happen all the time. You know, even if it's singing yesterday, like I think back to the younger version of myself that was going to those games, right? And, you know, just watching these teams and even thinking back to some of the stars that like when I was in high school and seeing and you know, how maybe it's different now and how things have changed. But I guess to answer that as quickly as I can, like it still happens daily. And it kind of depends on the story and what's going on or maybe where we are in the day. But just being in this market is truly a dream come true. This was always something that I aspired to do and trying not to take a day for granted. So grateful to be at CBS and everyone there.

2:09:33Just welcomed me like a family. It is a family over there and just grateful for every day. It's awesome. What did you make of Pete Crow Armstrong's excellence last night, especially against load change up for a Homer against that pitcher Logan Henderson and just overall the PCA star turn has been remarkable, hasn't it? It's been something and it is as special as we keep saying it is as well, right? It's, I mean, this tear that he's on is just something that does not happen every day. And in every single game you're going into it, thinking that something can happen and he just keeps producing at a level that's unique. And yeah, with all to be said yesterday, with all of his friends in the building, right? He cracks the game winning home run and then the difference in the game, just all is like this narrative in this script that just felt so Chicago and so right. He just keeps building his case for MVP. What can we say?

2:10:33It's been fun. How fun is it? I feel like in sports coverage, right? We have these merging of seasons and we often, it's stressful a little bit on the personal life and on our time management. But my favorite time of the year is like the bears are kicking off the season. There's good baseball. This year it's good baseball on both sides of town. The bulls, there's a lot of excitement around them. Like, can you describe how much that just anxiety and good anxiousness, energy of like, man, we're about to enter the mecca of the time of year. I think in Chicago sports. Of course, crossover season is always what we look forward to, right? But it is different this year because of everything we have going on. We've got to play off, bound very likely baseball teams. The bears are in a position and have an excitement around them that we haven't had in a long time, coming off a division title and playoff win. And the Black Hawk's having Patrick Kane back, having Conor Bidard, potentially when he comes back healthy,

2:11:33playing together on the same team. Like, there's reason to be excited about every team in town right now and a palpable one. And so we just can't get as much as I don't want to rush time because no one wants to do that, because it's going to pass anyway. But I can't wait till we get into the next couple of weeks in October and things really start to hit the ground running here and the bulls too, right? We've got Caleb Wilson, who is making himself known in town before he plays a regular season game with the bulls. And in Modest, Boos Ellis and just his continued growth as a young player and the young core they've developed there. Like, there, again, new head coach, like there's just been buzz around each professional team here in town for good reason. And we haven't had that in a long time. So I clicked over to your ex account, or your Twitter account here, Jory. And the pinned piece, the pinned story is something you did for CBSNews.com. Last year about Bears players incorporating Pilates into their workout routines. And it's funny, because like, my wife does Pilates every morning and it's been transformative in her life.

2:12:35She loves it. I had Jake Arietta on Hit and Run the Sunday. And Jake was the guy who brought Pilates to the Cubs locker room in 2015, 2016. And I asked him any players that he passed it on to. He got reformers, custom made Pilates reformers for Kyle Schwarber, for Ian Hap, for Bryce Harper in Philadelphia, like, what a gift. I would love that. If you get a custom made reformer, like he, so he passed it on. So, I mean, it does, it does wonders for athletes and their flexibility these days, doesn't it? It sure does. That was such an intriguing piece to work on last year. And actually somebody else that said that they incorporated Pilates into their routines here in training camp that we learned as Jalen Johnson, right? And, you know, one thing that I learned from both the players I interviewed in that story is that they use it for recovery. They use it for preventing injuries and just, you know, kind of the deeper muscle and strength and everything that Pilates does for you.

2:13:37But they saw a benefit on the field. And I just think that's fascinating. And we've seen it maybe emerge in more professional sports. But, you know, Jalen Johnson coming into a season fully healthy is something that the secondary desperately needs. And, you know, is hearing him maybe talk about how that's helped him as well as just a testament to the style of workout. And it's really fascinating because they all walk away saying, too, is like, these are these tough football players. They go through more physically than we know. And they're like, I can't get through these workouts. They kill, they hurt. I have done Pilates before myself. And it somehow does not get easier. So, yeah, definitely a fun one for sure. That was last summer. So fun. Great story. So great to have you on the show making your score debut. I was so excited to have you on. And tremendous job last night. My Millennium Heart was just like, I mean, it was the 25 and 25 year anniversary of Millennium Album. I was 10 years old when it came out. It was just the Backstreet Boys were all over my bedroom walls. Like, it was just, and at first I was like, I don't know if I'll remember all the songs

2:18:40and I know the big ones. I knew every word, every deep cut on every random album they had from like 93 to 2000. I was so into it. It was such a spectacle. The spheres incredible. They look, they sound good. I mean, part of me had to be like, man, Kevin's 56 now and out there just dancing around in his boy bands. Love that for him. You can still do it. You can still do it. I'm test to make. You can be in your 50s. There's still make music out there. It should be the source doing the hoots and I think they're on the list. And a related story. Love that. But yeah, so wow, was the crowd? Because the next day when I was on a flight home, there were two women wearing Backstreet Boys sweatshirts that might as well have been you and Ruthie Bletsky. We did not get any merch. We did not get any merch. We did follow the requested dress code for a Backstreet Boys concert. Which is what? You have to wear all white with like pops of silver or blue. Like it plays off their millennium album. So it was everybody in the place was wearing white.

2:19:41It was so cool. It was fun to see like the throwback hair. Like millennials were their super fans and now we're just super fans with money. Cause back in the day, like my mom had, my first concert was Backstreet Boys. My mom took me to go like saved up the money, went to the, what was the Bradley Center in Milwaukee was like the highlight of my childhood. So now 25 years later, I'm like, this is even better. When you were at that concert, when you were what, 10 or 11 years old, did anybody go, oh my God, it's the butcher. No, it's not. No one had an idea. I do remember that Cisco opened. So that was part of the core memory. Oh, hell yeah. And Tani, you were at the sphere the next day? I was. I stated make too much of a mess tonight before with the Backstreet Boys. So yeah, I saw Wizard of Oz at the sphere the next morning. Cause that's what you do in Vegas. You get nutty. You go see 11 a.m. Moofy. Yeah. But it was, I'm glad I did it. 2:32:55Still undecided on that. Seven games in 10 days for the Cubs against the Brewer's. A lot of proof, they get this the split last night. Gonna get to the White Sox in a couple minutes here. But last night, Pete Crohr Armstrong did something that pretty much nobody does, which is to Homer off the change up of Logan Henderson. I was looking at some of the numbers of that Brewer's picture who like John Smoltz loves. A lot of people love the stuff is really interesting. That change up he's given up a batting average against of 167. A slugging percentage of 367. He's hit five home runs. Five home runs have been hit off that pitch. But they were all in the strike zone. The change up that Pete hit was way, way low under the strike zone. And it was the same pitch that he like it for a fly ball in the first inning. And for him to come back and be able to home or off it in the third inning is just crazy stuff.

2:33:55It's just like flow state. He's reached the flow state of going up to the plate, seeing the pitch he likes, making a perfect swing on it. And it's like effortless. It's incredible to watch. And like you said, the varying types of pitches that he's just sending out the park is something special. It's 1.20 feet off the ground per stat cast. Okay, crazy low. That's the lowest pitch that Pete has hit for a home run this year. But if you go back to 2024, he's hit five homeers on pitches that low. That's the most of anybody in baseball. He loves the low pitch. He's not afraid to get down there and golf it out. And he was talking about it. He's like, I handle the ball down. You saw the last three days how deep my contact point was. So that means like he's contacting it behind the plate. He said the level of intent on some of my swings were just terrible. So I made a real conscious choice to be on the heater, let my athleticism play. And that's pretty much exactly what happened.

2:34:55Dude is crazy locked in at one of the most difficult things to do in all of sports. He had to do it last night. His boys were in the house. Like his boys are there. Boys are at the game. You got to show out. He rises to the moment for stuff like that. That's again, making of a superstar. He a superstar's rise to the moment. You can't not hit a home run when you got your boys sitting behind the dugout. Listen to Logan Henderson, the brewers pitcher, talk about the pitch that Pete hit for a home run last night. Is that the pitch you wanted to make the PCA? No, no. I mean, he hit it out. I mean, I haven't gone back and watched it. So it was in his honey hole. I mean, he just couldn't get it. Is there anything? I mean, it was pretty blow the zone. Is there more blow the zone? I mean, he hammered spin below the zone. I'm probably wanted to go more away with it and hold it a little bit. And he put it a great swing on it. It was in his honey hole.

2:37:56Shorber is a big strong man. Your dawn Alvarez is a gigantic strong man. Junior Caminero. And I love the Caminero. It's a great ride. I get about 30,000 miles a year out of my Caminero. Yeah, Matt Olson is a big strong man. Those are your top five in homers along with Pete Crow Armstrong. One of these is not like the other. That swing is, that swing must be special. And I would have to argue that he has the most swag out of all of them. Oh, I think that's true. Like he's the swag king. Yeah. Is he the most stop what you're doing at bat in the sport right now? Oh yeah. I said it last night that like usually I would say, oh, hey, Otonni coming into the season because of the spectacle of, of how great he is. But like the way that he lays off pitches early in the count and just makes the pitcher be perfect and just punishes every single mistake that is seemingly come coming at him right now. He's on such a role that I feel like he's surpassed Otonni right now.

2:38:59And like if he's at the plate, everybody's stopping everything they're doing and watching him. I think that's probably true. I think that's probably true. It is a pretty remarkable thing that is going on with him and it's hard to take your eyes off of him. Yeah, especially in high leverage, high moment, special stuff. Like that's just, that's a killer instinct. And that's, you know, you talk about Caleb Williams having a killer instinct. Well, PCA has a bit of that killer instinct, especially in the second half of this season. He's gonna walk it off for you, right? You know, if you don't walk him, he's gonna walk it off for you. Yeah, you guys, you guys remember when Wayne Dries wrote that piece in Chicago magazine about PCA, it was really, it was quite a beautiful article and Wayne's a really, really good, really good writer. John Maley, the hitting coach was quoted in there as saying Pete's swing was second to none. This is like, this is in the off season.

2:39:59He said the issues were not mechanics, but just timing, pitch selection and sequencing. Said the swing was not the issue. And Pete works tirelessly on this craft. He's gonna get there, said John Maley. And looking back, you make those quotes at the off season. Pete's, the swing is not the issue for Pete. It's just the other stuff, but he's got the other stuff dialed in. It's pretty amazing. And again, it's, it goes back to like, he's making it look easy enough. Like he's not taxing, he's not mentally, in his head too much about every little swing and every pitch. And it's working. Yeah, only one cub has ever hit 40 homers as a left handed hitter in the history of the franchise. That's Billy Williams. Pete's about to do it. That's crazy. There's so much baseball left. And now that we're in the month of September, they did not have a great series on the road. They've played really well on the south side this year. So your back at home, use that to the advantage and keep that energy and that why not mentality or we don't know any better. So we're just going to go out there and fight back in every series and every situation. And I think it's played well and weighed the ones around while you're doing it. Yeah, they've had that all year too, by the way. There's been so many opportunities, really. Oh boy, they're in trouble. So many times. And even now, you know, I'm reading the recaps

2:44:02and I'm like, man, like that did not go well. How's this going to go? And I'm like, why am I, why stress? Like, are they're not stressed? They're not stressed. Well, Venables not stressed. And Vassel's part of why they're not stressed. Right. How can you stress with a guy with a magic hat on it a one way to around? I love that about baseball. I know it's not true for a lot of other sports, but I love that the looser you are, the better off you are. I just, I love that that needs to be the case. So there's always room for jimokes like this, you know, for Vassel to go around. Every team needs a, oh, every, every team needs one. You got one at JN. You got a jimoke over there. Yeah, he left. I don't know if you know him, but. Oh, now ours, now we got one. We got no, he's added to our, we have a hand in the mower. Seriously, we haven't even touched on it. That's your guy, man. You and Jared. Yeah. Yeah. It's, it was unique the other morning. I can't remember what morning was on. I was on with him and, and David. I'm like, it's weird to be on the other side of the call and not sharing a desk and a TV screen with him.

2:45:04But, yeah, it's fun. It's fun. That's really cool. That's really cool. Yeah, every station needs a couple of jimokes. We're pretty deep at Jimoke here, I think. Yeah, we have them exclusively. Yeah. In this industry, yeah, no shortage of jimokes. No shortage of jimokes. It's true. It's in the job description. Yeah, that's right. I can think of a couple non-jimokes. Every station needs at least one non-jimokes. Well, wasn't a Joe Madden who talked about, you know, you have to have a certain amount of slappies, a certain amount of jimokes. The five different stages of radio station development. Yeah, it's a great question. Which one was Jimoke? Yeah, but it's a good question. I think that's the fifth one. You just want to have fun. You just want to win, you know? That's always my, I think, sometimes we get way too serious about sports. And I feel like we need to have a crash landing. And it's my pet peeve sometimes when people take it so seriously. Oh, yeah. I'm like at the end of the day, my job today was to come here, sit here and talk about a 24-year-old hit in home runs

2:46:05with his friends and attendants. I know, it's the best, right? It's the best. I had an experience in Vegas, one of my highlights in Vegas, I was sitting at a poker table at the Golden Nugget right across from Circa. At about 11.30 at night, you know, they changed dealers every hour, right? 11.30 at night, the dealers over there, and he looks up at me and he goes, you ever get recognized out here? I'm like, no. And he said, I watch a show every day on YouTube. Huge Bears fan. And so I'm talking to him a little bit. I'm like, oh, you're Chicagoan? He said, no. He fell in love with the Bears as a little kid in 1985. And he has followed them obsessively his entire life since. And he said, you know, I know it's a little silly, but I just, I follow everything. I read everything and I'm like, it's not silly. It's joy. It's like that outlet for people. And, you know, I feel blessed to be part of that as my day to day and my work. And I love when people are like, I'm a fan because of this. And I mean, working for WGN, you hear that all the time. We all are. Oh, yeah, for GN. So you heard it. We're constantly.

2:47:06Because of Cubs fan. Yeah, I mean, in Wisconsin, in the state of Wisconsin, I have family members like that we would get WGN and their Cubs fans because WGN. Yeah. So you hear that on such a like big scale. And it's like, man, it is cool. And sports are just, I could go on a tangent about how great sports can be in unifying and the joy. I feel like sometimes we forget about the joy that sports can bring because we get so caught up in the, why isn't the nickel corner playing? Right, right. But sometimes that's part of the joy for people. Like they enjoy. They for sure, for sure. And it's more fun to be angry about that than their lives. Than their lives. Or then like politics, which you can just drive you crazy and make you hate the universe. I'd rather us argue about sports than politics. So I try to think about that when people will text in or call in and be like, this freaking thing, or like you're an idiot or whatever, I'm like, they need that. They needed that. Yeah, they need to get that. Reading these texts, I'm like, you need it though. Don't read them all. Don't do it.

2:48:07Danger. Danger. Tanny, you go to one night over on the south side. No, no, no, no, no, yeah. Oh, it might not. Shit. I think, I think Vassal's been really important. Yeah. I think Mooney and Moona and his, his translator, being right there in the corner of the clubhouse next to Vargas. That's been a really good, healthy thing. I just hope they have enough pitching when it gets really serious in the post season. Yeah. And I'm not sure if Louise Castillo is that answer. That's a bummer. It really is. Because it came out so strong. And I'm like, man, they really, they found them. They found them. They made the move that they needed to, because I do feel like their offense is a little too streaky yet to be like a deep post season run. Like, so when you don't have the pitching to, yeah, I just want to cast you to figure it out. His first start was rough. And then the second one was like, oh my god, look at that. They got him throwing more change ups.

2:49:08They got it all worked out. He looks comfortable. He was dialed in. And then I would like someone to wave a magic wand at him. At some point this week in and make them not bad. They cannot have a 20,000 up. Be waving them. They should, they should trot out Castillo tonight. Louise, we're going to try a little something. Maybe Vaseline will get it going. All right.
