Foster Mom Indicted for Son's Murder

0:00In Durham today, March 10th. A grand jury in Fayetteville indicted Avente Devon on Monday for first-degree murder in the death of her adopted son, Blake Devon. She's a former foster parent accused of killing Blake, one of five children she adopted between 2007 and 2013. Devon was arrested back in June 2024 after Blake was reported missing for years. The charges also include concealing the death, starving the boy, and inflicting serious injury. Peter says she dismembered and destroyed his remains to hide evidence. This indictment covers only Blake's case so far, with London's death still under investigation. The story first broke publicly in March 2024, shining a light on big problems in North Carolina's foster care system. A WRAL documentary called Broken exposed those failures and push lawmakers to act. That coverage led to major reforms, including a new oversight office for foster kids. Mayor Josh Stein signed the bill into law in June 2024.
