Former NFL Linebacker Dick Absher Jr. Passes Away

Dick Absher Jr., a former NFL linebacker who played for four teams over six seasons, has passed away. He died on February 25th from pneumonia at the age of 81. A native of Washington, DC, Absher, shown at the University of Maryland from 1964 to 1966. He excelled as a wide receiver, leading the team and catches those first two years, while also handling punts, kickoffs, and extra points. He earned first team all ACC, honors his senior year. Absher made history as the first DC native to play for what is now the Washington commanders franchise. Drafted in the fifth round by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1967, he switched to linebacker and later suited up for the Redskins Atlanta, Falcons, and New Orleans Saints. After 58 games, he notched three interceptions and five fumble recoveries, even dabbling and special teams duties.

1:01He retired after the 1972 season with the Eagles. After football, Absher served eight years in the U.S. Army Reserve and built homes in Maryland.
