Tonight I was joined by Patrick in Wisconsin and Paul for a lively and at times deliberately controversial conversation about war, propaganda and the parts of history that get edited out. We explored conscription, conscientious objectors, wartime myth-making and the way official narratives can become classroom fact, while contrasting polished speeches and newsreels with the brutal reality experienced by ordinary soldiers and civilians.
The emotional core of the show came from my late father David J. Powis and his wartime memories from Malta, Sicily, Italy and D-Day, alongside clips from wartime broadcasts that sparked a wider discussion about truth, censorship, morale and manufactured heroics. We also touched on shell shock, post-war injustice, numerology, and the lingering question of whether history is written to inform us or to manage us.
