The Calgary Flames dropped a 3-2 decision to the New York Islanders on Saturday night

in Long Island.

The Flames had a tough start, but mounted a comeback in the third period that fell just

short.

The Islanders dominated the first period, scoring three quick goals to take control.

Kasey Sizekas opened the scoring at 1036, followed by Simon Holmstrom twice, including

one shorthanded marker laid in the frame.

Calgary responded by pulling starter Devon Cooley for Destin Wolf to open the second period.

That switch helped steady the defense, and the middle frame stayed scoreless, though the

Flames trailed by three.

In the third, the Flames finally got on the board when Captain Mike Hale backland tipped

in a shot for his 15th goal of the season, his 200.

30th career tally that moved him up Calgary's all-time list, Blake Coleman added a nice

deak for the second goal midway through.

Better in leadership from backland and Coleman fueled the push, but the early deficit proved

too much.

The loss highlights how costly slow starts can be for the Flames.
