Rookie star Cooper Flagg made his return for the Mavericks on Thursday after missing eight games with a left foot sprain. In his first game back against the Magic, he hit his 1,000th career point in just his 50th game overall. At 19 years and 74 days old, he became the second youngest player in NBA history to reach that mark, trailing only LeBron James. James got there at 19 years and 41 days, but Flagg pulled off a rare feet James never matched. He joined just the ninth player ever to tally 1,000 points, 300 rebounds, and 200 assists in their first 50 games. Since the 1976-1977 merger, only Luca Doncic and Michael Jordan have done it. While Flagg healed up, his duped teammate Con to New Eple kept shining for the hornets. New Eple leads the whole league with 216 three-pointers this season.

Now the race is neck and neck between the college buddies. Flagg tops rookies at 20.4 points per game with strong defense too. New Eple sits close at 19.2, owning the best three-point shooting among newbies. The Mavericks are done at 21 and 41, but the hornets push for playoffs.
