First Ring Daily 1956: The Right Config

I put the new hard drive in.

So either I made a very big mistake previously or I didn't do something right or I did

do it right and it's done and I'm actually happy with what's going on right now.

So I put the old spinning rust in, the new spinning rust I guess.

I immediately, as one does, I'm going to reconfigure how the NAS functions here because

I've got a strategy.

I've got this in my brain.

This is perfect.

This is this is the future throughout.

So right now I have one spinning rust drive put into the box.

I created a new volume called backups is a four terabyte drive immediately stop the

Mac from writing to the solid state drives and they're going to write it's going to

store its backup on the spinning drive.

So that ran overnight, seems like it worked.

Then I went upstairs on my primary workstation PC and I rerouted it to write to the spinning

rust for the backups doing it right now.

I think, and I can't hear this drive, which is a very happy thing.

I'm happy for you, but I'll just, I mean, this is a small apartment, but then again,

you are closer to that device than I am to my next.

I mean, I would almost touch it, so yeah, so this isn't the other, it's, there's a concrete

wall in the way, but I'll, you know, in quiet moments here, I could, you know, you'll,

I can hear the thing in there, it makes a little grand, you know, like a lower order.

Yeah.

Well, as long as I could, whatever, it's quiet right now, I mean, I, so I am thinking

between two geographical locations, right?

So that might, and I only have the hard drives, like not SSDs, right?

So that might be part of it.

Right.

It's, it must be doing like a pretty regular, hopefully, well, it should be writing files

to next.

I just started a little bit.

Anyway, it doesn't matter.

So the backups are going to go on the spinning rust.

I will eventually get another spinning rust drive.

So then I will have four terabytes of redundant backup storage, the usage capacity of both

computers only adds up to about a terabyte.

I've got plenty of overhead space for now, until whatever.

Then what I'm going to repurpose the solid state drives for that are in there that will

be one terabyte redundant is I'm going to, that's where my photos are going to be stored,

because I feel like photos need the best performance, because that's what I'm looking at the

most pulling down or whatever.

But I'm using the Synology Photos app, however, I think I'm going to move it over to this,

the image app, which is called IMMICH.

Yeah, it's like Google Photos, but for self-hosting.

Yeah, I've never heard of this.

Yeah.

So what I think I'm going to do is migrate from the Photos app to that on the solid

state drives.

I mean, the web interface for this is, and I guess the mobile interface is a carbon copy

of Google Photos.

Exactly.

It's almost humorous.

Yes.

The photos will remain on the solid state drive, the PC backups, because I don't need the

sync for anything right now.

And if I do do a sync folder between two devices, then I'll put it on the solid state drive.

But that way, I have like partitions of what this thing is for, and how it should be configured,

and I should be good until my next mental breakdown.

And I need to get bigger drives and redo all this over again, and then tell you that I've

fixed it for real that time.

I mean, I feel like you're mature enough to understand that you're never going to fix

it for real.

I know.

You could just live or not live with the current situation.

No, it's just until it's right up until the moment that I mean, yeah, I mean, like you

almost want to test this thing to make sure it does the job, I guess, here he is.

I've just I've never heard of this thing.

Yeah.

So it's apparently pretty popular.

So the question that I don't have a great answer for right now is actually how I migrate

my photos from Synology Photos to Image, because like all things in life, you can't just

copy the folder and be like, this is it.

I know.

Well, I mean, my goal is just pointed at the thing that is Synology Photos or whatever.

I mean, I don't think that works.

So this is part of the problem is like, you have to like copy your photos out.

We'll see.

Well, that's too be determined.

I just want to go look at mine, let's see how it's set up on my, yeah, okay, right.

This is one of the little issues I have with Synology where there's a, I think of these

in terms of like network share.

So it's like a photo share that is outside of like the home folders.

Yep.

I have in my, in my home folder, you know, like apps, docs, music, but also photos, right?

And the thing about the photos one is this is like, these are like mobile backups.

So it's like, it's, you know, okay, you know, like it's not exactly what I want, but anyway,

interesting.

Yeah.

So my solution, air quotes, was basically to get enough storage right, understood there

would be redundancy.

And I was just going to try to live with it until I figured out how this really works.

And I probably never will, you know, but this is, this is a thing, I mean, for sure.

Yeah.

I don't know the way it works.

My head is I got a backup storage pool and then sort of like a living pool of the

photo is if I do a sink folder, right, and that should do it right up until it doesn't

it doesn't.

Yeah.

I'm not defending my system because it's not a system.

It's just whatever they, it's anology, you know, kind of made me work with, but I will

say looking at it now because you're talking about this.

It's actually not bad because like my actual photo collection, so to speak, is like that

curated, you know, folder organization, however you want to determine it thing.

And the, the phone backups are the thing I will work off of each year to consolidate

those and then put them into the thing.

So actually, you know, kind of keeping them separate in a way actually isn't horrible

rather than writing to the literal collection.

Yep.

Every single time I do a backup or whatever, I fall back, you know, like I'm okay with it.

Now that I'm looking at it.

How do you install it on Synology?

Is that one of those like Docker container things or would just, we even know, I don't

Anyways, Xbox rolling out some Xbox mode stuff.

April update out, which is good.

By the way, the one weird thing about that is that this is a, it's just a Windows 11 update.

Right.

So if you get it, it will come in Windows update.

And they're not being at all clear on who's getting it.

So we're in this thing where it's like, well, maybe we're finally going to get away from

CFR as blah, blah, blah, whatever.

And if they said explicitly, all right, this is rolling out right now in the following

markets, the United States thought that whatever.

And it will come to more markets soon.

I would be like, okay, like that's just kind of a normal way to do things.

But the way they announced it was like, it's rolling out selective into,

in select markets and to select users.

And we'll see how it goes.

And it's like, so like,

well, this is like new level of abstraction.

Like it's, it's actually less.

Like transfer to never like this one update is like, what?

Why just put it out there?

Like, what are you doing?

It's not weird.

And our internet here has never gone down for more than five minutes,

seven minutes.

And it was out like all day.

And so I, we kept checking on things and whatever.

And I eventually just bought like an eSIM data thing.

So I could just have data and use it in the house and not worry about it.

yeah, we went to dinner.

It was out.

You know, whatever.

I'm telling you this story.

I thought we were going to have to use five cast out of the port.

Like on the deck or the balcony, whatever it's job.

my phone connection here is so terrible.

now that I see that the preview update has gone out Xbox mode is part of it.

And that's what they meant.

only some people are going to even try to get it.

It's probably still a CFR.

you install the preview update.

And maybe you get it,

Well, Apple made $111 billion.

They're fine.

Microsoft's profit was higher than Apple's.

Really.

And he was like,

is that usually true?

And you would think I'd be ready to stop my head and be able to be like,

or no, or whatever.

And I was like,

you know,

I don't know actually.

So,

I plot a net income of 29.6 billion.

Yep.

So I looked at the year ago quarter.

Mm-hmm.

Because it was easy,

because I'd just written about both.

And,

um,

a year ago,

their profits were literally identical,

like whatever the number was like 29.8.

So it was like almost exactly the same number.

Now,

the Apple makes more revenue.

Um,

and look,

logically,

a software services company should have better margins than a primarily hardware business.

But Apple has insanely high margins for hardware maker.

Um,

and I have to wonder if this isn't tied to.

Uh,

the component crisis stuff,

and that this might actually get worse for them,

because they did say that.

Yeah.

That they,

their costs are going up dramatically in this in the next quarter.

Um,

and I wonder if that isn't them swallowing a little bit of it.

And then at some point,

of course,

you know,

and they've already done a little bit of this too.

They're going to have to pass this cost along the consumers.

But,

um,

I,

I don't have enough data.

I'm just,

I looked at two quarters.

So it's not, you know,

super,

um,

well, defined for me.

But I feel like that might be it.

Could be.

Anyway,

I'm just saying,

I don't think.

If you hold most people and said,

who's, you know,

who made a bigger profit this quarter Microsoft or Apple?

Most people would be like,

oh, Apple.

I don't even think twice about that,

but actually Microsoft made a bigger profit.

I guess this business has legs.
