It is another edition of the High Hope's podcast presented by Miller Light, Jack Fritz. Once again, alongside and joined by Tucker Bagley. Tucker, how are we doing, BOW? Much better than last night. Much, much as you said, much more joyous occasion to get together tonight and talk some Phil's baseball.

1:04Yeah, and listen, I did taxi early when they went down. I was like, eh, you sure? You sure you want to do this? I felt a big old negative podcast happening, but they fought back, they came back, ended up not being a laffer, but you could kind of kick your feet up a little bit. And talk of the thing that really hit me tonight. And it's really been kind of the theme here, really since a rise to the addition because they have been a different team. Now, they've gone through fits and spurts of good offensive performances. When they were facing worse pitching staffs, they look like world beaters and offense. They're walking all the time, a lot of ducks in the pond, and then team said, hey, we're not going to just let, we're not going to just walk you the entire time. You're going to have to beat us with your bats eventually. They feel like we have to adjust back to that. But overall, the one thing that I do feel about this team and have sensed about this team.

2:06And one of the things that genuinely makes me proud of this group is there has been a different level of fight within games that I don't totally remember during many periods of this version of this team over the last four years and or even five years. And like last night's stonk because that was the game you could have stolen the whole brave series was a back and forth affair that really could have gone either way. But to come back tonight against Hunter Brown, who was really good. Is he a top 10 starter baseball, maybe not, but he's in that 10 to 15 range. He's a really, really good pitcher and I wear Sanchez and have it will get into that. I was impressed and I was I was proud of how this team fought again and how really talker they have continued to fight really since arise has gotten here and they kind of knew it was go time in the season.

3:11Yeah, I mean, they still have those games where you can tell early on they just don't have it and they don't have it have it in them. But those games have become fewer and you know, much more far between and yeah, you'll go what they did tonight where they fought back against Hunter Brown like Sanchez gives up four in the top of the third and you kind of feel like, that wasn't great. That's not ideal. Don't want to see don't see Sanchez getting blown up like that, but they fight back and it wasn't like a huge home run. They they battle they they strung together hits they they tied it up. And then you immediately gives up the two on home run anything like well, it kind of feels like last night like you get close, but you but you are unable to really push it over the line. So you're able to break one out in the fifth and then you just explode in the sixth inning and really put it out of reach with you know the shore brick grand slam being the the exclamation point and you're right and I don't know if the the desperation from the the poor start to the season where they they've really had to fight. And really for six or seven weeks they had a scratch and claw their way to every win possible because they didn't really have the margin for for error that they have in years past when they've gotten off to to

4:19start but yeah, you look what they've done and you know there's a path in the postseason where you can say hey if they fall down to nothing three nothing early in a game, you aren't necessarily counting them out because they are putting together good at bats. They are walking they are you know digging deep they're getting into bullpen's earlier they're killing bullpen's again, which is something that they they did in years prior as well. And yeah, I mean the way they fall back tonight against an Astros team who really you know after two and a half innings you thought we're going to coast to a second straight win and maybe you turned the page to wow, I hope they can at least salvage the game tomorrow afternoon. You're not going into a rubber match after you know really seizing momentum. Yeah, it seems like we're getting a bullpen game from the Astros tomorrow. So you know you feel like you're in a pretty good spot heading into that. I had no idea that e-mai is like their their mop up guy now, you know, I mean he was such a target for them this off season someone that they were begging to get and that seems like a little bit of a bull dodge maybe kind of gets his his his bearings and he'll be end up being okay.

5:25It was jarring seeing him come in the eighth inning in a game where they're already down by a ton. It was also jarring and also put a little smile on my face seeing any of the Los Santos. I didn't know he was still pitching. He's he's turned into a very serviceable not great will pitch in the big leagues for like 10 years kind of guy and yell and do you remember the trade in which the fill is acquired any of the Los Santos. I do not remember the end of the Los Santos trade really come on. No one of the happiest days of my life and because it felt like a win over every the every old beat reporter in this town. It was Freddie Galvest for and and yelled at Los Santos all the way back in the day. People forget Freddie Galvest played gold glove defense. He did and people can't have batted him second for an entire season. He couldn't it anyway anyway. So it was a really brought him back in 21 and then they didn't let him play shortstop. I know he played what third.

6:25I think what I mean to wait there which he was so fat by then like he was never skinny but he was so fat by then. Yeah I like when he came back I was very happy for Freddie. I believe that we did a bit on the afternoon show of should we give him a standing ovation. You guys are real wrong. Probably the only standing ovation that you've ever done. Easily and the most notable. Certainly the most notable but yeah so you know they go down they fight back against Hunter Brown. They they blow it immediately and then just slowly start chipping away and I think what was so encouraging and and I guess what maybe happiest tonight with what what they did on offense was it wasn't just the long ball. Obviously Schwabra hit the big one that was great and you know Turner hit one again which is good to say they need try to get going and I've he's had two spurt the season that have kind of saved his overall numbers. That time out in San Diego where he hit the back back games with 470 foot home runs or whatever and then like the two weeks stretch he had in the middle of the summer and then maybe whatever is happening now.

7:33He is just for he's batting second in the lineup he cannot be a black hole they need him to get going he I don't even I don't want to get ahead of myself from the standpoint of look oh here comes like last year's tray I just want to like. Close my eyes and hope that that here comes this tray run it's been good last couple of games for sure and I certainly hit the ball much much harder but I mean you look at the. The inning they scored for I mean Tucker they executed. To hit runs to hit runs and one inning this baseball team what last night we mock them send the can't do any of the little things well and like whenever they do one little thing well is like you're firing off emergency alerts because they did something that's been around for 120 years in the game baseball so they scored in other ways. Besides just waiting around for cash or or price are part of Bob no and they did wait around and they did get a price or a cash or a home run harper at a to our rei single but.

8:40Yeah I mean the thing that this team had did tonight that they haven't really in the last four or five games of the office is struggles they got hits with runners and scoring position right I think there's six for. Six for 15 with runners and scoring positions tonight there are two for nine last nine I think they're like four for 24 in the brave series I believe they were already five for the last 37 heading into the fourth inning yeah so not not great not I know like you're not going to score a lot of runs if you're five for 37 and I'm sure a couple of those five hits were Luis arise bloopers over the second base when that probably couldn't. Couldn't couldn't score a run so yeah I mean just what they did it's what we saw them do in August when the offense was good right like get on base get a single pass the baton move on and everyone contributed and when they do that you can just see sort of how deep their lineup gets when you have guys like Taylor Cruz who had another decent night so so had had a pinch it RBI I mean bear a team and and a walk there a team offensively that they do have depth it may be inconsistent you don't see it every night but one through nine if they're on their game they they have a shot to really have some depth where in a game where you know if

9:57Sorber doesn't hit a grand slammer or a farper doesn't hit two or three doubles you have a chance to still put up some runs yeah especially trace hitting I mean that's the kind of dreamed upon when this offense was rolling in August of okay you start to see the depth here you start to see the depth Tucker one of the most frustrating things that I hear a lot of Phillies fans say Tweet tell me in person whatever is Kyle Schwabber only hits meaningless home runs when they're up by a couple or down by a couple and there are some staff the other night that France get throughout that like he has the most home runs in baseball where you're there down by one up by one or tied since becoming a Philly I think he's got 109 and tonight obviously is is 110 of whatever stat France keep through out there so dynamite research as always here on the high I was back at I just think how

10:59short but hits a lot of home runs he hits a lot of meeting with some runs but he just hits a lot of home runs he is he's at 44 home runs like yeah some of them are going to happen when you're up by a ton or down by a ton but his idea that he is just like a blowout merchant is so freaking annoying and I know people do it and it's just not true he ate the huge home run against the braves and a huge home run tonight and like countless home runs throughout the season he has plenty of meaningful and big home runs he hits a lot of home runs some of them aren't going to be the most meaningful in the world shocking but my goodness he basically went down and one armed a ball for for a moon shot home run and the bends that it laid it's like the bat is so quick so fast and so effortless it is it's a rare combo of all three of those things what a player what what how should we

12:04home run do you prefer the one tonight where it's like an effortless one arm swing and it goes to the upper deck or where he just absolutely turns on one hits a bullet his beautiful in their own way the one that he hit off a Fanta's on Monday was like that's that swarpy that is swarpy put a barrel on a bullet as as as Roops said I I like those ones I appreciate the one arm ones they're very cool but the ones that he just like catches flush he's he's the most like watching him hit a home run is the most like PGA tour guy off the tee of any baseball player I can remember besides like the one home run that's there's it yeah it's just he does if he hits a home run even on a night like tonight where he knew that the sweeper was coming he wasn't fooled by it but he still goes down and gets it with one hand like it still goes 400 feet you know he he doesn't miss it home runs isn't hit cheap shots if he hits a wall screver is because he hit it like 400 feet in the air and it's just coming down at that

13:09point but yeah I mean watching him it's just he swatts home runs he doesn't necessarily hit home runs like yes the balance he has at the end of his swings I just think it's phenomenal and watching him hit is just a joy like he strikes out a lot when he's not going good it is tough to watch but on nights like tonight and and weeks like this week where he's really heating up I don't know there's anyone more enjoyable to watch just make contact and what did I say he was gonna go on run the second I was on the eliminated from the fancy baseball playoffs there's never a doubt that he was gonna go crazy and he's doing that and I am very glad that this kind of run is happening for Schwabber because I was starting to get a little worried about the back like he had been dealing with it heading into the all star break he performed insanely well in the home run Derby that was great but I care more about the Phillies than I do putting on show in the home run Derby so you had

14:13you had you had the back thing that I was kind of worried about I was worried about the leadoff thing a little bit because his OPS and the leadoff spot is not that great compared to having Bryce Harper hitting behind them and then I don't know like the I had this like fear of like the remember in what was it June or May they they got rid of all the AI stuff on the iPads yeah remember yes and I was like was there something going on there where they like had tells in the pictures and like that's why these guys were off to such crazy crazy starts and you know Schwabber's been on such an insane run but you know him getting back to was that four home runs in five games he's got I think five home runs in his last seven games it is it is very refreshing and much needed at a key time for this team as they are trying to chase down the braves and chase down the

17:26if you want to you know look at the silver lining to what was that you're tired the last seven in a row oh yeah well listen he already loud six so great got the win he did get the one his 17th win of the year so he should have got his 17th his last time out he did not but he gets 17 tonight in a game that he was not very good in and it was kind of the biggest fear of like all these recent Sanchez starts where he would get through it but never felt right lot of bass hits lot of traffic on the bass bass and he would pitch his way around it and navigate it well enough but you just had this fear that one of these nights that the the damn was gonna break and you know at least tonight for the Astros the damn broke and you know maybe they have some tell on both him and painter because I mean those guys have been pretty money Sanchez has been fine he hasn't been as like Sanchez dominant but he's been perfectly fine pretty jarring watching those two getting

18:31sheld and back to back games against his Astros team yeah I feel like it's been more quality pitching the dominant pitching for Sanchez probably the the the last little valley like he like you said he's been fine he's been good I think he struggles being compared to someone like Hazus Lesardo who might be the most dominant pitcher and baseball for the last month or so and it kind of sucks when you have to pitch two days after after him and and you know have that that comparison but yeah I mean he allowed 10 hits he only had three strikeouts the hits were hit hard the the home runs were were no doubters and yeah you you do wonder if one they had a teller to you know kind of what he's gonna look like when things tighten up in the postseason because as great as he was in the regular season last year and he was good in in you know the the start against the Dodgers but he wasn't wasn't great it wasn't awesome went what five and two thirds six and two thirds couldn't get the big head to Geekha yeah and just you know kind of couldn't shut it down couldn't get to that that next level to

19:34really finish it off with with an exclamation point and yeah you kind of wonder is that who he is where where he's a guy who come play off time or come these big moments he could be good he could be great but he's not a guy that you know like Wheeler or you know someone like that who has the reputation of being just lights out in in the postseason or in in big moments yeah I do have a a big fear of Sanchez in the postseason and it really comes down to I think they're gonna put him into a bigger game that I think he should be pitching if that makes any sense like I I think he's probably gonna start a game he showed it and that feels like maybe even a game one like he might be starting game one over over Lazardo which I think at this point would be now practice by this organization I think Lazardo should be the game one starter I think he's earned the game one start I think outside of yes I know this sounds insane outside of the 50 and two thirds scoreless which Sanchez

20:40did to this year I think he's just been I think he's been better than good better than good but not great I think he's been in the middle of that kind of tier we know what great is I think Lazardo for a more majority of this season has been better than him and obviously Wheeler has really tough stretch and we'll see how he kind of ends the season but I just have this fear they're gonna put San or put yeah put Sanchez into a game where they're gonna base it off of the entire year and most being propped up by the 50 and two thirds scoreless whereas that should be a game started by started by someone else and it's gonna be like it's been the last two months which is a lot of base runners and you're just kind of hoping and praying that the levies don't break and you're down for nothing in the third because it's felt like it's been teetering on that in so many of

21:46these Sanchez starts and tonight it backfired man I you hope it's not fatigue of the last year year and a half of pitching a ton of innings more than he's ever done his career but man I just I don't have this feeling of confidence in my gut when whenever Chris Sanchez takes them out and that's a scary spot to be in he he generates six whips side like how many times in last year and a half of you like exited a game with him allowing like six whips with the fastball change of combo and where his sliders turned into it is it's it's it's it's concerning and yeah and hopefully the rest of season can kind of figure it out yeah you hope so and you know it's funny because you talk about him and like he has a 265 year a in the postseason the last two years but which is pretty fantastic most people would sign up for it but just feels like there's always a lot of traffic on

22:47the base pass like you said it's kind of he gets out of it and you know he kind of guts his way through it it's never it easy six innings it's never an easy seven innings he's never cruising to the point where you know he's through seven and it's a question of can you go out for the eighth are we gonna bring in you know the the setup guy whether it's bull and the carlin alvarado whoever and for a team like this where you do have those questions in the bullpen can you go into a game one knowing that hey this guy could be really good he could throw seven shut out but there's also a chance that we could be in our bullpen and in the fourth inning and you know we might really have to burn these guys and we'll see what happens a lot of just gutsy performances rather than just which I respect a gutsy performance but every while you want to you want an easy night out yeah yeah just like you know give me seven shotty like 85 pitches or whatever but that that's what I want be clean be efficient all that good stuff so that is sanchi some other things

23:52that kind of suck out from for me tonight Tucker pretty aggressive move by by Don pulling March in the sixth you know I mean by that point he's gonna have another at bat you can't guarantee that's gonna be against you know against the lefty for wherever you bring in it's probably gonna be a righty but it kind of goes to show where the Oregon where Don is specifically right now you know with Brandon Martian and where he's out with Brian Della Cruz yeah and Ed Mundo so I mean that I think something we've talked about in the last couple weeks one of the strengths of this team right now is the bench which I don't think you've been able to say that in a very very very long time but guys like so so Derek Hill Brian Della Cruz I mean I think him being aggressive in him getting those guys at bats in situations that are more advantageous to them then then Brandon Marsh like you said it does say something about Brandon Marsh you did get another hit tonight so maybe he's starting to it's a peak out of his slump a little bit but yeah at this point if you

24:56have three hitters on the bench we're putting together quality at bats night after night it's a really nice problem to have where you can get these guys in early and kind of mix and match down the stretch against you know team team spools yeah I was at Mundo not not Brian Della Cruz Brian Della Cruz started of course so yes but at Mundo getting him back in there in a big spot after kind of not coming through in the Braves game when you felt like it might have been another at Bundo moment and you know getting him right back on the horse after the not hustling out of the box last night which I feel like if Mundo took a little personally I got I appreciate his pregame availability took ownership of it at Mundo is an unbelievable guy an unbelievable teammate and I think he feels bad about that and he's going to see him get him right back out there and into a semi big spot another kind of a bowling outing you know like there's a moment there where JTA like really

25:59fire him up and then he turned back into Jonathan Bowlin but I think the first pitch and I was like 94 I was like I don't love that but the velocity got back up there and I don't know but it was he did allow a run which was annoying it wasn't a home run but he did allow a run yeah I mean he was he was fine and when he allowed the run I was like yeah it's okay it's a five run lead it's now four on lead but this has kind of been a consistent thing with him where he hasn't been the guy we saw earlier in the season and you're also one pitch away from it being a two run game at one point so it's fine it's okay maybe he didn't have the the juices flowing at that point but yeah it's he's not a guy that I'd necessarily give the full benefit of the doubt too no probably not probably not but he's also super super important as is Alex McFarlane who got back in there tonight and looks like Alex McFarlane now not the most high leverage spot totally understand that but at least the most standpoint of hey he didn't fold again he didn't go out there and look shaken after

27:05what happened with with Acunia and you know the staff at Stark had that that that Gal put in his article about how it was the first time in 16 years that a right handed hitter has pulled a home run of a hundred plus hundred plus miles an hour feels first I feel impossible given how everyone throws a hundred now and no one's turned around a lot of opportunities tons of opportunities so I mean maybe they showed him that sentence and said hey like human far between that this has happened you know stick with it kid but it was good to see McFarlane bounce back and and and certainly look like the guy that we had hoped and dreamed upon for the last you know three weeks yeah I mean you just hope that and I think his makeup and you know his confidence level it's good to see that it wasn't shaken and unlike some other guys in that that bullpen he he seems to have the makeup of a guy who can go out and get high leverage innings at at some point in his career maybe

28:05sooner than later but I think he he's kind of on that path yeah I mean he screams like he's going to be this team's eighth inning guy whether it's this year whether it's next year uh when they eventually extend to Ron I don't think they're going to let to rongo um if you can go rather extend to runner marsh yeah we're back Tucker we're back to that one I would love to know his numbers since you tweeted about out his uh five one hundred idea for brand new well it's it's pretty terrible I've had multiple people in the last like 48 hours find that tweet and respond to it yeah it's still going out there nice nice but he screams eighth inning guy uh and then once to Ron you know moves on or whatever and uh you know was it I mean he's up after next year you give him at least three year deal and then you know he eventually passes bababon and we we celebrate in the streets but they shouldn't give him a yearly contract they should give him a contract just for saves yeah you get a hundred and ten saves and you can move on
