April 7th fighting the current. Have you ever been swayed by the influence of your peers?
Of course you have, it's only natural. We are relational beings who enjoy shared experiences.
So what happens when we have to go against the crowd?
Today we'll hear from Marsha McDonald, a woman who is thankful for the person in her life who did exactly that.
She's here to share her true story on this unshackled, daily devotional.
Born with musical talent, I grew up on rock and roll. I went to heavy metal concerts every week and idolized the musicians.
I was soon doing drugs on a regular basis, despite nearly dying from an overdose one day in school.
Our favorite hangout was a forest preserve where all kinds of drugs were sold and used openly.
That's where I met John who was older and disabled from an accident. He was hooked on heroin.
My parents didn't approve of him, so we ran away together. Before long I was hooked on heroin too.
And we became drug dealers to support our habit. I ended up with a blood infection that nearly killed me.
Then my sister gave her life to Christ. All she talked about was Jesus and how he died for our sins.
But I didn't want to change. But after several years I got tired of the mess in my life and moved back in with my parents.
I spent all my time jamming at local bars.
One night my sister barged into the bar where I was about to perform and said,
she was you this day whom you will serve. While I laughed at her and carried on.
Then the next morning she dragged me to church.
There I heard that Jesus Christ died on the cross to set me free from the bondage of sin.
And my heart was broken by the truth. I prayed and gave my life to Christ and now I sing for His glory.
Jesus warned His followers in Matthew chapter 7 verses 13 and 14.
Enter ye in at the straight gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction and many there be which go in there at.
Because straight is the gate and narrow is the way which leadeth unto life and few there be that find it.
Friend, the gospel presents only one way to salvation and because of this many people will miss it.
But we, like Marcia's sister, have been called to stand firm against the current of those headed for destruction.
In some cases these people will be ones closest to us but do not be surprised or ashamed for your life is a light pointing others to Jesus.
And it may prove most effective to someone as it did to Marcia.
Will you receive this truth today?
