Paid for by Virginians for fair elections. Everybody, welcome back to fan hockey show on the sports and radio network sports that 360 and wherever you get your podcast. Matt Marquez might view to here with you Jason Bucola will be joining us in studio in the next hour. So keep it locked in here. We got a clip to play from the wingman pod with Matthew and Brady Kichuk. It's actually pretty cool little it's a little inside baseball as it were. So pretty good stuff. But before we get there, it's time now for the futile five, five things
we are looking forward to going into the weekend and how they all might play out. Number one, Sid Vicious. Did you see last night? Mm-hmm. That's too bad. Just wanted them in the lineup. Yeah, for those that don't know Sidney Crosby got Sidney Crosby and then left the game again. I tried to come back. You know, it was pretty and it was no it was it was a good hit. Wasn't anything malicious. But you can tell like he's so and he's such a physical machine right that when and you don't want to you know hazard a guess because I mean this guy's just gone through what he missed five, six weeks with the knee and he comes back and the team's still hanging in there. You know, and it just when you so I'm come back and try and skate and go right down the tunnel. You're just thinking, come on. You want to you want we know that he's not retiring. He probably can play in another Olympics. But this year has been so much fun watching him keep this team from any kind of rebuild that you don't want to be out and it didn't look good. No, and not
for anything. But the Pittsburgh penguins are a fun team to watch in like when he's in the lineup of course when he's not in the lineup. Yes, but you you want to see the Pittsburgh penguins in in full health with Crosby and Malkin and Carlson and all the younger guys Ross or he's not brought younger, but you know what I'm saying and you want to see him in the playoffs. That was one of the because Malkin and then it last night was one of those nights too that you're like because obviously you said, man, your health is so at this time of year and there's guys that are banged up, but there was a sequence there and I wasn't using the flicker that it was like I looked and it was like latang was down. Yes. And then you're like boom and you're clicking and then Russ is going out the door and like down the tunnel, like not just stopping down the tunnel. And then and Sid was already gone. I'm like, oh man, like old music there must be just dying on the bench. Like what's going on here? These are they're all even at once. And then they slowly came back, but it was it was incredible to see like almost every top echelon guy done in a
five minute span. The one thing is as I mentioned with with Pittsburgh is that when Crosby and or Malkin have not been in the lineup, this team hasn't missed a beat for the most part. Yeah, but at the you're better with them. Yeah, but yeah, just I'm just saying to get if he has to miss some time before the playoffs, you still if you're Dan News, you have to have some I don't think it's some lots of confidence. If Sidney Crosby's for some reason and I have no reason if he if he misses whatever if he misses the next couple weeks, few weeks, I think they fall out. I think this is the time here. And I don't that's not begrudging anything on the season they've had. It's all very tight. Yeah, this is the time of year. And you see the teams that they're playing. I mean, they've got Florida back to back. These are they need they need him to to keep the heads above water as far as the equator with the playoff line. Number two, Saber Ratlin just it's it's incredible to see where that's at, but the in the only but I would have on this whole
thing is is because now they're being there's no hiding anymore. Nope, they're really really good, right? Like no lead is safe. Like even the games they get a little sloppy in here and you see them down by two if you you do use the flicker, you come back and they've got two back. Like I mean, that that game against I always use that Tampa game is like going from the emotion of not watching its entirety until it turned into you can turn it off because every yeah, every time down the ice there was another goal. It was like this is a test because Tampa Bay's throwing it at him here and by the end they eight seven then on the other night Boston. Yeah, they're down to one. Do you try to change the channel and miss to go back even on their their West Coast road trip. It was like okay, here's someone's finally got them. They're going to be tired and they come back. They end up losing the point and over time, but these guys just don't go away. Now as you start to watch them closely, you start to say, hmm, they're not exactly they don't buckle it down. No, and maybe they don't have to, but I don't I think of all the teams that we see that are in the playoffs.
Like, hypothetically, if Colorado got in the playoffs, yeah, because they're in the first round, opponent beat them in the first game. I'd be like, hmm, that's interesting, but I'd still think there's some shellacking coming. It could be a longer series, but I think the the way Buffalo starts the playoffs is going to be so critical because that's their next test rate. Yeah, there's there's so many people that haven't been there before and you don't want to change anything, but again, I think Elliott said it the other day and I don't think they look at it like they're playing with house money. I think at least that's the internal chat they're having. They think they think they can win the Stanley Cup. Yeah, that's not house money. That's we think we're good and we will be absolute viewing ourselves as failures if we don't have success. Well, when you go, it's, you know, what is what is the line? It's not it. It's you don't come this far just to come this far. Yeah, right? Like, I don't think there's got to be more this team right now. There's none of that. And I told you, we all everybody has those things that they hate, right? In the
scuffling. Well, I don't, you're getting scuffling and raking. Gotta get my baseball fees. Hopefully the jays are raking today. Not scuffling, but Buffalo right now, like if they did that, they wouldn't say, hey, if you told me in a training camp that we were going to be where we were at, you love that. Oh, my God. Oh, no, it sucks. You're there because you're one of the best teams in hockey and I hope that they can maintain that and push through to get valuable playoff experience. And if it goes as far as they want it to go as far as they're willing to work on it, but this isn't, this isn't a nice story that finishes with a great, hey, let's just go to the regular season, get into the playoffs and go, we're out, but you know, that was a great. No, no, no, you're that good. I also, I also do believe in a roundabout way that the success that the football team has had, like, and getting to certain points. No, no, but, but I'm just saying, like, the fanbases, they want a winner. Oh, no, you're right, right? They just don't want a winner because there's plenty of crossover between bills, fans and sabers fans in that market. Number three,
finish the job and only one and in finish. Well, no, there's two apparently. I can't, you wouldn't give up the ghost on this. So it's for me, Maddie. I guess there's three teams. There's probably more you could jump in on this for sure. Please do Nashville, Columbus, who you have completely nailed, like they're two losses. They want like one goal and then battles, like complete, haven't one, like for me, Winnipeg, like, when Winnipeg's making the rush, I said, they would lose a game on their push and Scott or Neil will come out and say, we no showed. We just completely got away. We didn't do it. Columbus's last two losses was one nothing shut out to the islanders and two want with Mason, March, and with him having the stick in a tap in whatever I still watch. I wasn't I watched that. I watch that 10 times. I still don't know. But this team, like Columbus, and now it's like, okay, they have not, they've not
ventured away from any of their game plan and their stylistic play of just going for it. And it's been great to watch. But now can they finish the job? They've got to that. The Ottawa Senators was my other team, who with if all Mark was playing anywhere, anywhere close to what he's been giving them right now. And I'm not revisiting the reasons why he didn't. They are so home and cool out in a playoff spot, but the bottom line he is giving him that. And you hope with all these injuries, shout out to my boy, Sammy Cousin, his little bubble head without an arm. They've got to get healthy. I hear Santa, since coming back, obviously based on the Resport, yesterday, she bought 68 weeks, but finished the job. They get there. Can they continue to push or do they kind of get to the line and take a deep breath? And when they do that, well, guess what? If they keep getting past the buy, if they keep getting that same goal tening because all of his been he's been as good as any goal tenor on the league the last couple weeks. He's been fantastic. And last night in the loss was was still great. Number four, and the winner is we could probably do a whole segment on this one, Matthew. You brought it up.
Just it's kind of it's it's pretty cool this time of year that there's really no awards that you can just say. I think there's just one. Which one's that? The call there I think. Oh, yeah. Okay, Schaefer. Yeah, somebody's it. Yeah, it's everything else is Schaefer done. But I mean, heart, man, you're looking at Salky Salky in that one would take a little because the Norse is still up for the rocket, the Vesna, the rocket, Caulfield just keeps on scoring. But Ken and it's like, Hey, I'm still here. The Jack Adams, I heard I was listening. They were legitimately. We're trying to get down to three. There's like seven or eight. Yeah. And it could still play itself out based on how this next couple of weeks goes if some of these guys can get dragged across the finish line. Now, I don't think that you can win the MVP or the coach the year on a non-playoff team. But there's some guys that have done some incredible jobs this year. Well, when we look at that, like, okay, so just quickly, because we kind of
discussed it a little bit yesterday, when you talk about the Norse, when you talk about the heart, like, you got to play a certain amount of games, right? Does the Jack Adams, do you have to coach a certain amount of games? No, honestly, not when it's this incredible. Yeah. If he was whatever, 750, if it ends up and I don't have it right in front of me, but if you finish up whatever with four losses or four regulation losses in 40 games or something there. Well, right now, and they get in, they are, so Rick bonus is coach 27 games. They are 19, four and four. That is good enough for a points percentage of 77, 78. Yeah. Like I'm, that's kind of putting you right. Again, Bednar was kind of the guy and now Colorado has been magical, so he's probably going to still be in it. But as we said, he can just go across Cooper, Muse, Muse, it's funny, right? He's not, Brindamore is not, they're going to win another division.
I think, I think Galaton is going to get some views, Marco Sturm. Sturmy definitely deserves some, who is else was we were talking about. I wonder if Patrick was going to get some votes here too, if the Islanders get in. There's a lot of Nash. I don't think Nashville is going to get, I'm not natural. I don't think San Jose is going to get in, but if they get a lot of, I guess, and you get Travis Green should be getting some stuff too. I mean, yep. But it's amazing. That's it's right there. We're at kind of year six names. Yeah, we're missing somebody. But anyway, Quinnville is in that conversation if they win the Pacific. I think the Pacific thing is going to, it's because more the age of the team, how young they are because the Pacific winning the Pacific is kind of like, wait, you're the, there's hardest pillow. Some people like that though. Well, I'm telling you, this, it's going to be, there's going to be pillows in every rank for playoff games. There should be. They won't be throwing rats in the ice. They'll be throwing pillows. Yeah. So like, there's, hey, it's, it's wide open here. And number five, I mean, Mike
Gentile even picked this one out, like, he knew where five was. Go J's, go home opener today against the Oakland athletics. Mike Fudeau will be in the building. I believe. Yep. And I will be right. I've got tickets for tomorrow. I don't know. I'm going, I'm actually more excited about tomorrow. I just the whole thing about today is why you've got, I mean, to go and see the banner, which some people say they don't deserve a banner. You're head is shake. They play 100,000 games. If you win the American League East, you get a banner. It's a lot of games. Wow, but it's a lot of you. And the best line, yeah, somebody asked Schneider about them being the team to be, he goes, we're talking about we're half game out of first Yankees. That's, that's being ready to go. And they just, they're a very likable group. Yeah. They brought a lot of guys back that are very and it'll be, it'll be interesting to see whether that was lightning in a bottle last year, or this is, this is for real. Cause it is strange. We had that thing early on and being, again,
this is the only team that I kind of like am a legitimate fan of in Toronto. Like, I mean, I certainly was the least, but when it becomes your industry, you have a different view of it. Is because like even yesterday, when you talk about seen a guy in a different uniform, see him, but shit, a met uniform was kind of like, yeah, that's weird. That was weird. Yeah. Also, it's just, you know what baseball is for me? It's the sign that the weather's going to get me exactly. It's going to be cold this weekend. If some, oh, and today it's, and if they open the frigging dome, no, no, no, I'll, I'll, I'm not gone. It's too, they can't. It's happy, but then you have to buy like a $60 hot chocolate. No, it's, it's got to be more than 10 degrees. Then we talked judge when JD bunkers, when he was leaving today, he was, he did make a good point that quietly as much as it looks like a beautiful ballpark and the team looks amazing. You got to have a second mortgage. The cost of tickets are, especially for the opener, up to, up, up, up. They certainly are. All right. We got to take that. That was a few to five.
Five things we're looking forward to going into the weekend and how they all might play out. We got to take a break. When we come back, Jason Bukula from the NHL on sports and then the pro hockey group joins us. We got lots of questions for books and a little inside baseball with Matthew Kachuk and Brady Kachuk from their podcast on how the Brady Kachuk Anders Lee fight came together. Interesting stuff. Bukes is next. Back in a moment. And wherever you get your podcast, Matt Marcazi, Mike Fudah here with you. Please be joined in studio. And he came with gifts. Jason Bukula from the NHL on sports and then the pro hockey group. You brought us back packs. I love it. It should be, you know,
as you trend towards the end of the year, your other special guests, should they, they should do this type of things. Then let's see, for each bringing stakes or something. No, it's not for us to bet. He lost the bet. He lost the bet. Yeah. Well, I didn't lose a bet. I just, I'm just trying to be kind. You're just going to rock. You're wonderful. The more pro hockey group stuff, we can start floating around this building. That'll be a great story, Rodgers. And it's awesome. Yeah. No, I will. Well, we love stuff. You should see the bag in the water for clothes, you know, what a really bad trade is. We've learned that is is nice bags for headsets. Yeah. Big sexy gave me this. It's I can't even know. He's sexy. I can't. Give me the sexy. He's actually just got another level. It looks like a, it looks like I know. When I looked over, I thought we were landing a helicopter. It looks like a rat might have been eating these. Well, it's interesting. Anything is possible. There's the look DJ, DJ Boogs. There's the link. DJ Boogs. It doesn't. It doesn't look as good as you think. Just go one ear. Now you're at your techno, techno Boogs. Can we not have another do a do act between you two guys?
We haven't had an album about at least an agent since Christmas. Yeah. What was that? We are the world. He's gone. He's gone solo. He's doing his own things. He's broke. He's broken. He's broken. I'm going to the band. I'm going to the techno. I'm in a rave. techno Boogs and he's called big sexy. I candy. Boogs is our very own Glen Friday. Okay. So before we get to anything, I just saw, I just saw something. I would assume that you guys have been in this rink to scout at least a little bit because of its proximity to this place. Mercyhurst. That's a D1 program is no longer. And this was like they were asking for donations and stuff like 24 hours ago. And the school made a decision. The division one hockey program is now gone. I went on a college tour there. It was really good. I know. Small little, the most powerful agent in hockey. Apparently. That was just a small little, the nice little campus. Like we went there, did it tour. It was really cool. Yeah. It was really cool. That's too bad. Yeah. So,
so thoughts to all the players out there and coaching staff and all the staff included in that. That's, you know, all these outside when it comes to something like this, with the evolution of hockey in the south, you're looking at the Alabama's. You know, my son goes to the University of Tampa Bay. It's a real tough life down there going to school. Let me tell you, but especially in the middle of January, anyways, like there's a lot of, there's a lot of momentum to get hockey programs and a lot of really cool spots now. So when you start to see something like this happen, program fold, the reality to ever revive that program is going to be slimmed and numb because you're going to see a West, especially if you it's like when you're in LA, like think about it, USC, UCLA, up in the San Diego. Obviously now we see how cracking up Washington, Portland area, all that. You're going to see Oklahoma there. Did they apply to be a division one hockey program? I don't know how to wear it, but it that'll happen. It'll start moving into the central as well
of the United States. And that's too bad. It's too bad for those kids. Even to that point, folks, is like when you start, like it used to be and it's still like the Michigan shadow dancing car like the Michigan states. These are still the, you know, but like Arizona State University. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. That's what I mean. So you see like some of these hot beds, really cool institutions are going to start to get programs. And like with the popularity of hockey in Florida right now, you're going to see USF have a team. You're going to see Florida maybe some at some point or Florida state, etc, etc. So this is too bad. That's not a good day because Mercyhurst like that, that, that league there with Niagara, you know, like all the sports at RIT. RITs and that too, which we'll call it right, the Kineshius rate and Buffalo. You don't like to see that, right? No, I mean, it's like the little engine that could. It's another Quinnipiac in that division too. No, Quinnipiacs in the ECAC.
Like that. There's, it's, it's another opportunity for players to get an education and play hockey. And unfortunately, Mercyhurst, that's not going to be happening. Okay, let's, we got it. We got a clip here. So books, you can put the headphones on for a second. This is going to shot up books putting the headphones on. This is, this is from the wingman pod with Matthew and Brady Kachuk. It's a really, really fun podcast. Little inside baseball and how the Brady Kachuk, Anders Lee fight, kind of got put together right off the opening face off. Here's the clip. Talk us through like that conversation you had with Anders Lee. You're not fighting him because you hate him. He's left-winger. I'm the left -winger. So usually we'd start on opposite sides. In the locker room, I saw his name was circle. The away team throws in their lineup first. Just told Kuzm, okay, you're going to go on the left for the first puck drop. And he said he just knew right away right when I said that. And it's actually funny because I don't do smelling salts. I just give guys taps and then go right
line up. I'm kind of just standing there and then Lee's doing the smelling salts and kind of taking this time. Am I going to have enough time to even ask him, like, get this all set up? I just said, hey, like, kind of need this one. Don't get the boys going. He just kind of looks at me like, let's get the boys going. And then just like, you know, I'll square up or just get right to it. He said, let's just get right to it. I'm like, perfect. Those types of fights, like, there's no hatred there. It's just more like ton of respect for, I think, each other and just to do what's best for the other team in our eyes. And that was just a show that it was going to be a big game and try to set the tone right away. Pretty cool. Like, what do you guys think about that being public, that kind of conversation? Just because this is something that was never talked about before of it. Yeah. I'm going with it. I love it. I absolutely love it. I mean, two captains. Yeah. And I think you get it there too. There's no hatred. And this is just we're doing this for our team. I think it's refreshing. No. Again, there's going to be people out there out of the hug of the tree
that don't like it. But it's that to me. If I'm on that bench, I'm jacked. And if I'm thinking that's my captain, you know, I'll just talk about, you know, whatever he's that's that's what you want, right? And and to talk about it with that much refreshing, I think because you know, it's genuine. Yeah. And he does it. I think that's refreshing to, I mean, to have these guys have these kind of things like those kind of talks about it. I didn't see anybody complaining at the four nations face off when everybody was chucking their knuckles, USA team Canada early. It seemed to get everybody excited. This is just part of to me. This is whether people want to say, maybe I get in trouble for saying that as part of the game, but it's still part of the DNA of the game. Like these things to set the tone. It happens. Okay. And I agree. I'll give you another example of where I tend to go the other way on it is and not a knock because he did it. And I know I did his family was there and stuff like that. And the fans did get into it. But I thought it was pointless.
Was when Pizzetta fought off the opening face off in his first game up. Yeah. That's against the Hannaheim. Against Vialia. Yeah. Who they there's nothing there between the two teams. As far as they play each other twice a year. And I mean, I don't know. Pizzetta good. But I mean, it's not like his first game. This guy fought for Montreal for years and stuff. But that to me is like. Yeah. I guess that's your preface. That's a great point. I should preface it by saying that the the game itself Islanders sends. This has got huge meeting that. Yeah. Yeah. You know, they're trying to set the tone for each other's teams. Yeah. And I mean, this is not a become a Leafs thing. So he said because I thought I loved what Cowan did the other night. And I haven't had a chance to say it off. I love what Dakota Joshua did. Mm-hmm. Coming off to take on Zidoro. Right. That's to me is a big part of again, you can have that debate whether, you know, I'm fighting. I like fighting in hockey when it's there's a purpose. And I think those are perfect examples of why it makes the best sport in the
world with regards to teamsmanship and camaraderie. And I say with all respect because I know there's people out there who who totally disagree with that. And I'm fine. You can disagree with that. I'm good. I'm just I got one for you, books. And my hop in two because he's one of our favorite players. And one of them I know very well could draft them. So here's your if you look at scheduling wise, the Carolina Hurricanes trade for Nick Blurry. Yeah. Right. He's played one game. And he got his fight. Right. And they talked about what they actually asked Olivia. And they both said he goes, I need this one the way however they talked to each other. They fought. He did very well, which knows people don't live to talk about what happens when they fight Olivia. Mm-hmm. But he hasn't played since then. And they got head to head head to head games coming up. I don't think personally. I don't think Olivia. And this is not that I wouldn't like I mean, I don't think Olivia doesn't need to do it. I don't think he has to do it. It's done. It's done now like that's that's that ship is sealed. That that that situation has gone somewhere else. So it's interesting though. I'll be very interesting to see if he makes his second if Nick dresses for his second game. Yeah.
It doesn't become a bit of a because I do believe Olivia took the hat. Olivia he's got whatever he's got 16 pox now. Yeah. Like that's the other part of it too. It's Matthew Olivia. Maybe the heavyweight champion, but he's also scoring. And he's a very impactful player when he's you know, not punching guys through the you know, punching guys in the back of the head through their face. Like that's see like a modern day Bob Prober back in the day. I want probably was scoring 20 goals and scored like 40, didn't he? No, not 40. Pick a year 20 for sure. He scored it up. Oh, he had 20. The one year he made the all star game. Check it. I might be wrong. I usually want to make all 20 goals. Was this career high? Okay, 1991 92 like 40 in 63 games. He also had 276 minutes in penalties and 63 games with 20 goals. Maybe if I had 40 penalty minutes in a game. Anyways, I get I think sorry. No, hold on. I take that back. 29 in in 87 88. So we have to 29. Is this a lack of like, is this like, is this like, is this going to be like, guess six plus minus? No, it's 29. That's the career
high. I made a mistake. But he also, you want to take a guess when we penalty minutes he had that? He had it. 342 up. It's awesome. Okay. 412. 398. I killed the crisis. Right. I'm like, so he said 80 games scheduled back then, right? 82. I know 80 and so he spent over five full games in the box. And he scored 29 goals. That's pretty good. I would say it would tend to agree with you because he does have that when you talk to the certain guys that do that. He's got that factor now, right? No, yeah. And he's scoring at that. That's a real good clip. Like last, it was like last year was 18 maybe. No, I think at 19. So, so it's looks like you're going to get, you're going to get 15 to 20 out of this guy on a yearly basis. What a presence. And he's going to provide the 18 on your correct. In this year, he, uh, he missed a lot with an injury. So anyways, this guy's game translates to 15 in front of me because I almost think he's like,
that those guys from that stage are almost like unicorns because he said like, he's nobody fights this like probert had he fought like 40 times a year. So I'm going to check, I'm going to check his fight log to see in 87, 88 when he had 29 goals, how many fights he had and they were fights. Oh, they're street fights. Yeah, they were like, and every night half his year was off. By the time he's done, I mean, it took 10 minutes to clean up the gear, but every time. No, no, every building that they went into Craig Cox, I remember that was first time I ever watched, uh, one of those, it was actually, I'm like, here we go, dating ourselves. Sorry, Anna, do a on a tape. You put the VHS like a hockey fight tape. Yeah. Yeah. And it was like the first one that came up was pro versus Craig Cox. You know, I remember because he was wearing the old school Vancouver Connect uniforms and he punched him in the head from the side of the net to the blue line and then Cox came back because we made a big deal. Like that was a really good fight the other night between Nick Flino and, uh, and savvy. Yes. That was an old school guy's going
minute chocolate them off each other's pumpkin. That was regular current. Probert, like, yeah, he hit him a good 75 times rate in the noodle. Okay. You want to do, uh, you want to take a guess how many fights he had in 87, 88 when he scored 29, 37. Okay. So, uh, it was 398 pims or something, right? Yeah. 10's counted. Time's counted then. Okay. Oh, time's counted. Yeah. So I'm going to say you had 27 fights. Futes. 28. 24. Oh, you're in the range. Yeah. Got me on prices right though. I try to go low on you. No, you both. No, we're both over. Okay. We're over. Bob Barker with I should have you go first and I should have just bet a dollar. That's why I screwed up. I should've got to love it anyway. You imagine 29 goals and 24 fights. That's a busy guy. It takes, it takes guys four years to get to 24. And he had Joey kosher as a teammate. I know. Well, the funniest is here when they try to start out who's got who? Yeah. There was, there was one. Um, I can't remember. It was on on the ice guardians podcast with Brett Hollen
and Kelly Chase. And they were talking 20 twist may have been on this particular episode. And they were saying it's like something happened and Kelly Chase kind of, he got, he was, he wanted somebody and whatever. And then they're like, well, I think it was, I don't know, it was pro bird or Joey kosher and they're like, I'm getting Dave Lowry and he's like, all right. So they take Kelly Chase goes to take Florida goes, by the way, pie. You get kosher and he's like, what, what did I do? Yeah. He's like, that's just how we got paired off. And those are the kinds of things that happen, um, all the time. Listen, I'm getting blown up on my phone right here by what friend of the show, friend of the scouting fraternity, Aaron Janelle Biggie, um, stand the kept champ being with the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Anyways, he's, he's, he's making fun of when I put the headphones on with the glasses there. Um, but in, in our spare time here, you got to look this guy up. Owl tour, okay? Look up Owl tour in, in elite prospects. You want to see some penalty minutes? Take a look at that Owl. So Owl's, I found it.
Owl's a pro scout for the New York Rangers. We work with them in Florida. This guy is, he's a beauty too. Some of the most fantastic individuals that have ever come across my life. I worked with them Florida. So Biggie and, and Owl, he got it. You got to check out his penalty. I'll give you, I'll give you my favorite year. It didn't take me very long. 1981-82 with the Regina Pats. 63 games, 486 penalty minutes, but it gets better. Go into the playoffs. 13 playoff games, 117. Oh, over 600. Playoff game. Oh, there was a game that got out of hand. That's, for sure. Um, yeah, that's a good one. Ask who hadn't. That is a really good question. Who had the best penalty box guys who know? I really like this one. This one was a little overcrowded. Not the one in Philly because the fans got into it. Are we going to talk hockey? We're going to reminisce. It is hockey, but it's not really. I lived through myself and C. C. Carolyn Cameron and I lived through a long shift last night, right to the end of the Vancouver
LA game. We did post-game of a Vancouver game. Apologies. He skits great. When he gets grumpy, you gotta be careful. I've seen him. There's last time I was sitting beside him. We were at the, what did we call it? The management, where were we called? Whatever. Our suite on the, on the on trade day, the border. Yeah, the border man. So he's clearly melting down about the data leafs are having. And we have it on. So I decided, so I decided to kind of like, usually says this thing. So I passed along to the manager and I said to him, I'm trying to make it a little bit smiley face on the data leafs are having. And he just goes, no, no, no, no, no. You just throws me full hide in the trophy right in the head. No, no. What he said was so good. He's trying to say they're going to take all these picks. Trade up, go on, get a better pick. Trade up to get a better pick. No, no, no, no, no, no, they're not going to do that. So not, no, the time, the one time that I've seen books where he was really grumpy was when he, when I said
on the show and he buried a lexelop right here. He's like, what's more, on more, more nights than 90s, more Adam Ernie than for some of our bacon, I'm just like, oh, that's not fair. That was good. I didn't want to ask you because we got a text about this yesterday in our mail bag. And you and I talked about it off the air a little bit, but the idea of a team drafting the rock twins Liam and Marcus were leading the WHO and scoring right now. Like if you're evaluating those types of players, this is for both of you. Like how much goes into the evaluation process of, okay, we could see what they can do individually, but is there a way that we can get both because obviously they work better in tandem? Like how do you, how, for guys that are so intertwined, how do you determine how good they are apart from each other? Yeah, I'd say that that's a challenge. But I also have the preface that by saying that they are, they're different players, totally different players. Like Liam plays the wing and he's got more dart to his game in my estimation. He's got a quicker release. Marcus plays the middle. He's a
playmaker. Liam is a little heavier. Marcus is not as good a skater as Liam. So you got to really peel back the onion a little bit that way. Obviously they've got that synergy. But when you get to minor pro, the NHL, it just gets harder, right? Maddie's from this point out and there's no guarantee that they both arrive at the same time anyway. So you got to stick to your process and I understand the strategy and it might make for a nice story. But for me personally, in my list building, if you will, there's a separation there and, you know, you just see how it lands. It makes sense. It's a good, it's a nice strategy. It's not comparable to when you got two guys that like, it's not the city. It's no, that's why I mean, it's not where you're, you know, you're going to have two elite guys that are no missed superstars, right? Again, you could probably do more just service if you bring, you know, if you try to do something like that, just get them both and neither. I told you my story about which was great. My brothers and oh and sound there like holy smokes. So you do it and you think, man, this is good. We can get them both and there's clearly a different development
patterns. And then you start to piss them off because they, they want to be like, it's like an agent, right? Yeah. They talk about this guy, this guy until they convince you and then they just move on to the guy, the next guy, right? They don't just didn't talk. So I mean, once they convinced me that the first brother was ready, which he didn't need to convince me, he was drafting the nature already. And it's like, oh, we don't have to talk about him anymore. Why are you screwing the other one? Right? And anyways, it can be, it can be tough. It can be tough. And maybe you don't want to get involved in that. I don't know, but it's, it's the best player available and you see where it lands and you go from there. You manage that later. Where do you have them both currently? I've got Liam in the top 20 and I've got Marcus after that a little bit later because the one team and I think I mentioned this to you. The team that makes sense is Calgary because Calgary's got the Vegas pick, which may or may not be one that is make sense if you want to do the, if you want to do, if you want to do it, they have the capital to make it happen. Yep. Right? But you, there's also, you know, you're not going to be trading second round picks to move up to take a guy way ahead of slot.
I know, right? No. And so that's a great point by you because right now, and it seems like historically for me, especially most recent memory that there's a lot of parity between 22 and 23 all the way up to kind of 42 somewhere in that range. So that's where I'm reluctant to invest more draft capital. Like if I have two seconds, two early seconds, just as an example, if I can't get inside the top 12 for us feuds that I'm not doing it because there's just too much similarity in those players. So I'd rather roll the dice with more volume at that point. If I can't get way up past one of my thresholds on my list. And we'll see where it falls. I mean, Calgary, for me, Calgary need to score more goals, going forward in their prospect pool. You see it, they work hard. They're a very competitive group. They've got a nice culture there that they've like an underbelly of culture. They're no question. But they, they need to find a leap. And it's part of that is they need more sentiment in their, in their group. And, you know, Liam's a winger, Marcus is a sentiment. We'll see. There's going to be some other guys
in that range. Yeah. So since I don't want it to say because of what happened off the ice with Gavin McKenna, but post world junior, let's call it. Gavin McKenna has put up some pretty electrifying numbers at Penn State. Something changed there. Is it a confidence thing? Is it a swagger thing? He's just kids confidence. No question. He was confident. One of things weren't going well. And he's, you know, part of the reason he had to evolve was because he had to check his confidence at the door a little bit to change some of his games. So what has he done? Optopak, he's, I call it 30% better than he was in November. Pretty significant. Yeah, it's significant. But it also speaks to where he was. Okay. So, you know, you have to be kind of realistic both ways. Guy Gidowsky, the head coach there, he rolls him out 24 minutes tonight. He's got, you know, he doesn't kill penalties and he gets rolled out. He does kill penalties on him. He's a depth penalty killer. Okay. So that is his role really.
What's changed? He got lightning in a bottle in relation to his skill set, but he's also cleaned up other parts of his game. And I think that when you clean up other parts of your game, if you're above the puck a little bit more often, like, you don't overpress offensively. Like, if you're two line mates are below the hash marks already, or certainly below the goal line, the offensive goal line, you're not pressing to the crease where you're tracking all the way back. He's above the play more. So now he's getting pots and turnovers and he's got quick hitters out way, transition plays. But, you know, in that segment there, and what, before the tournament, he had a 10 game segment, Maddie, he had 18 points. Okay. Eight points to one game, which is astounding, obviously. He was minus two over that period of time. Okay. Minus two. Now, 24 minutes, a lot of ice time. Yeah. I keep that in perspective. The one game at Michigan, his line, whether it was goals four goals against in the big 10 tournament, his line was on for five goals, going both directions. So high, high octane, high volume, high, you know, high risk high reward.
Okay. But feats, this is where, and this is what goes on behind the scenes because they would, they would put it on us. Okay. Tell me why we got to draft Stenberg and Non McKenna. And I would, I might, they're both wingers. They're both probably aren't going to play center at the national iconically level. One guy is going to give you a little bit more offense, called 15 to 20 points, which isn't a little bit more. That's a lot more. 15, 20 more points. But, you know, my example would be this, do you want a Mitch Mariner on your team going for it or any of next Suzuki plays in the middle, but I'm talking about the responsibility of the player, the way they play the game. Do you want Mitch Mariner or do you want next Suzuki? And that's kind of Stenberg who's Suzuki like, and then the other is more Mariner-like. So, you know, your, your split in here is a little bit. He's gone on a heater. He's an elite offensive town. You cannot teach offense. You cannot teach offense. The rest of the choice, like defending is a choice. Competing in the trenches is a choice. I just think that Iver Stenberg, for me, is a complete player. So, feats, in that situation, where you have guys, with that, where that is the choice, where it's Mitch Mariner or Nick Suzuki,
is, is your default the center? I would think. But we don't, we're not talking about a center here with these two, but that was just my example. Yeah, but I'm just saying like, in that situation. If there was one, yeah. Well, I've always said, I mean, that's where we had the very interesting conversation on, and again, just a Dean Lombardi, always for us, would have been your trump. If you're tied, and you're with the defenseman first, which made an incredible conversation up to the thing, because we've had some really high-level people that completely have different views on who they would take. And that's Celebrini. Remember the little thing you threw out there, if you were starting. Celebrini and Shaefer. Celebrini or Shaefer. Yeah. That's a tough one. Yeah, but it, no, but it's like, I mean, you're talking about your entire franchise changed forever with both of them, and some people value the defenseman. I don't think we've talked to anybody that has said, like, we've had three or four people answer, like, who's the answer? Nobody has said the same thing. Celebrini. Oh, yeah. It's all been mentioned. Ryan Boyle. Ryan Boyle. He said it too. Is that today you're sick? Yeah, that was
the answer. Sorry. Yeah. Boyle took a celebration. Do you cursed me? I cursed him, by the way. Yep. It's interesting. Who would you take? Boyle said, Celebrini, and not like that. Huh. Enter. Because of the center. You said that you're, you start with the puck based on how you take your face offs. You're, you touch it all over the ice. You're down low. You're up, but it's, it's, he made a great argument. Sure. I would still take the defenseman, but yeah. Who about you, Boos? Boyle Boyle. That's such a tough one. I'm going to Celebrini in the middle. And, but I don't feel great about it. I mean, you feel great because I'm going to get a great player, but you understand that. Yeah. You're not losing sleep at night because that's one of those decisions. If you get it, you're not pulling a, who's the guy? Who's the guy in the Buffalo that lost sleep over Raquel? Tim Murray. Tim Murray. Yeah. You're not losing sleep. You're certainly not announcing. You're losing sleep as you're walking away. But, yeah. But that was, this whole thing stemmed Boos from our talk on that draft thing because in their bolts, I said, if we were redrafting, I think it was the old five draft or whatever. No, 20, it was at 15.
15. When by Burensky, I took Burensky and you took Michael, right? We were one position. Yeah, we were. Who would pick second? Yeah. Yeah. And it's just, I just can't put it on my head and play. It was always, and then if you're tied on the two defenseman, it's right shot D. It's like, it's like, and you're almost trained on it. Yeah. Because you can easily, Boos could talk me at a celebrity. I mean, at first of all, as I said, once you're on the level that they're both like, there's zero character, there's zero issues. Now you're going to have a debate that you're, you're not going to feel great, but you're going to feel great. Okay. So here's, okay. So here's where I don't know if it's going to switch for you. If Matthew Schafer was right-handed, does that change the conversation for you? No, I'm still going with the center. I just think I'm still going with Schafer. So celebrity. Celebrity to me is Sydney Crosby. Like that. Sure. That's my comparable long term for that franchise. And, you know, Crystal Tang is been, now I think Schafer is even going to be better at Crystal Tang. Don't get me wrong. But I do. I think that's, I think there's going to be a lot better. So yeah. So
Crosby's a good starting point. Start. Yeah. What I'm saying though is I'm just thinking about how Pittsburgh built their D on the back end. Like, the Tang's been there forever, type thing. You know, it's the same thing. Like, I don't know. Like, did you guys watch the editors at all last night? Schafer, he is around it all the time. He launches the attack. He joins the rush. He, even when he flips a muffin at the net, it goes in. You know, it's just everything that he touches. We don't call them muffins in the show. We call them forberts. Okay. That's what you call him. That's what he calls them. I won't do that. Yeah. Well, sorry, Derek. The other, the other part with, with Schafer is too is he's also going to get bigger. Like that's, that's another part of his game. Like he's not bigger in terms of physically bigger. I can tell you that from when he got hurt last year, broke his clavicle at the world juniors to when we saw him at the combine. And then when I saw him at the beginning of the year this year, he's, he's already done that for sure. And yeah, he's a boy still. He's like, he's not a man. He doesn't have man strength. Yeah. He's not a man. He's a celebrity. He's exactly Bill Flett.
No, he's both of them are posted stamps. Like it on their, they're both young. Derek, I mean, can you imagine that being your choice in hockey? I think, I think there are some people on, I think there are some people that have had the first overall pick and second overall picked the last couple of years. I wish they had that. How about this one guys? Like, our team left should have got blessed. He's a heck of a right shot. The president. Here's our comment. Here's a conversation piece for him. Demodov went fifth in that draft. I said, I had Demodov too. Okay. And, you know, the Montreal Canadiens, I mean, they got the Zorovsky kid on the horizon here. They drafted them 34th, 34th overall. How many people are going to be having conversation with this job after that one? Well, there's a lot that goes into that Russian factor and everything else. But with a late first, isn't the risk kind of worth it though? Yeah, I would have done it. 100% would have done it. 100% would have done it. Is it my fact that would have done it this way? If I hadn't tell on that he wouldn't come play for I'm in Florida, let's say, or, you know, futures in LA. And our intel is that this kid isn't going to
come play there. Just, he's going to stay in Russia in the KHL. He doesn't want to play there. But you know what? He'd consider going into Montreal Canadiens. Imagine you getting this, this, this wave of information behind the scenes. You know what you do? You draft them. Yeah. Because what it is, I think this is what, where we lose some of our focus in draft and development is that really what we're in the business of doing and tell me if I'm crazy fused, but we're in the business of building up as many assets as possible for the organization period. That's our job. Some of these guys on the amateur side, some of these guys may never pull on our jersey, but they have to be super attractive to the rest of the league and have high value. So if the intel is he's not going to come to you, but he'll we'll go there. Well, that team knows. And yeah, maybe that team's going to say, well, he'll only come play for us. No problem. We'll just keep his rights. And you know, you guys can sit there and salivate that you wish you had him, but they will overpay. They will overpay it again. Maybe get another second round pick out of it. You know, sure. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Sneaky burly and at the end of the first try doing it with the first pick overall. Well, that's yeah. That's yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's been done.
Yeah. Well, I can tell you we were are good buddy. Look at the package. He got traded for the biggie. I know that you're biggie. You're scout buddy. Yeah. Oh, Lindross me. You're saying take the player and the player and see what happens. See what happens. If it's that, I mean, all I said, it's it's it's cagey cagey cagey stuff doing it at the end of the first when you know what you're going to you're holding onto a weapon and assets. Now it's also first pick overall. That's different for sure. Yeah. It's just a different feel. Yeah. I mean, you, but you also know at the end of the day the way it worked out. Oh, look at the players everywhere. Well, I mean, I was involved in that trace. Well, one of one of them was a key cog and a very key cog ended up being a Hall of Famer in the in the in the the the uh the the Colorado. I want you to stand like up like Peterfore's bird. Like that's that when you look at the names involved in that and obviously he's a Hall of Famer, too, Eric, but it's like it's when you look at the names on that thing, you're like, imagine putting that baby. Oh my gosh.
And there was two like Mike Reed. They just like guys just in there like Mike Reed, like Ron Hexthal. Hex. They're in the Rossville to make that volume of a trade today is damaged with the well, actually with the cap going up, you might be able to have more flexibility to make a volume trade. Um, depending on, you know, uh where they are in their contract cycles, but that kind of trade you're not going to see. Maybe ever again. Well, that actually that will take a break, but that leads me to a conversation that I wanted to have about the Toronto Maple Leafs and two assets that they have going into the summer. And if you could completely change your franchise by moving one or both of this is where I start piping off and Twitter starts attacking me, right? Perfect. So looking forward to it. That's what it breaks. I'll go, I'll go stretch. Oh, no, you're going to, you're going to give your two cents on this too, pal. Okay. Okay. I want you to get in trouble on Twitter, too. I don't know how many times you saw a damn it of life. I watch, I don't. Books is, books got me set up. I'm, I watched enough stuff
that I'm going to worry. We're okay. We were talking. We were talking. Uh, we got to take a break. When we come back, what do the Toronto Maple Leafs do with Austin Matthews and William Nielander coming up? It's a fan hockey show on the Sports and Radio Network Sports Center 360 and wherever you get your podcasts back in a moment. Hey, it's a list for a fire. And I'm Justin Cufford. Join us as we discuss the most important sports stories of the day and tee up the biggest games of the night. It's the fan pre-game, 6 p.m. weekdays on SportsStat SportsStat 590 to fan in wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, everybody, welcome back. It's a fan hockey show on the Sports and Radio Network Sports Center 360 and wherever you get your podcasts. Matt Marcazi, Mike Futa, Jason Boohler in studio. Uh, before we get to the Leaf conversation, I did want to, uh, bring light to your article that came out yesterday, um, on SportsStat.ca, exciting NHL prospects competing in the NCAA tournament. Uh, you want to highlight a couple for us or books? Well, I got to highlight the best, uh, name and college hockey for sure at
University of Denver. Boston Buckmerger. That's a good one. That's pretty good. That sounds like a hockey player is what it sounds like. There's some interesting names. Um, I have to be clear when I, when I project college free agents, I think that, um, and this is no disrespect to the athletes, but there can be a trap involved here, you know, our recency bias or ball of the ball in relation to the graduating class, junior senior, whatever it is in our, uh, in college. And some of these guys are just going to be, um, daps guys. So, um, take it with the green assault. It's still a lot of work ahead in them, but there's some really good names in there. And some of them have already been drafted, like Charlie Strammell, who started his career at Wisconsin. He's at Michigan State, big rig, six foot three, 217 pounds, whatever he is. Um, you know, he's a Minnesota wild first round picket took forever to pop. He traded, he transferred from Wisconsin, Michigan State. Now he's ready to come out. And, uh, and, and, and this is the kind of guy that Bill Garen, he saw how he built his Olympic team. He's going to value this type of a player, right? Yeah. There's a name on there, the little guys that I'm keeping a very close eye on. I'm curious to see
what happens here. So, Trey Augustine is the goal tenor of Michigan State. He's up for the Mike Richter award for best goal tenor in the, in the country. Did he make the, did he get, uh, finals for the whole beat to top tenor? I don't know. Top tenor. I, you have to look that one up. I kind of start losing track of the whole beat because I don't know if people understand. Everybody gets a whole beat, uh, nomination at the beginning. Then they keep pairing it down. Yeah. Until you get to the final four, the frozen four, and then they make the announcement. But Trey Augustine, the goal tenor of Michigan State, um, if, I hope some people would take some time to go to read the article and take a look at his statistical analysis. It's just been off to charge. He's been very, very good at Michigan State. Here's the thing. Grand Rap is a very good, uh, hasn't outstanding goal tenor in Sebastian Kosa, a little bit older than Trey. Um, so the Trey Redmins have two goal tenors there. Trey's in control. Futes, this is our worst case. This is our worst nightmare, isn't it? When Trey, he can go back for a senior year, but he's in control right now of what he wants to do. I, I guarantee you that Trey wants to sign this guy.
Like I don't, I don't, for one second, thinks Steve Irisman doesn't want to sign him, but, um, there's also going to be a little bit more, he wants to be in the NHL. And now there's going to be even more of a lineup in front of him. They got Gibson there. Um, you know, I think that Kosa's on, on the verge of he's been in the minors for a while now. So it's going to be interesting to see what happens with Trey because he's going to look at himself in the same ilk as a, um, as a Spencer Knight or a Jacob Fowler who's, you know, in the mix and Montreal, um, even Jacob Dolbish who, who's at Ohio State and he's passed track to the National Hockey League, you know, relatively speaking. So, um, just keep an eye on that, uh, name. College free agents for me are like, I mean, everyone you want to have found money, right? Yeah. But in books made a great point off air, um, and on air. But I mean, you was talking about the value of a contract. You only have so many contracts. So it's not like you're just at a dark board. You go in and see a guy you like for a game and like, let's get him found money. Like that contract value of the contract itself is in
some cases just as valuable or it's just a big, it's big a mistake if you're not taking a legitimate swing in a guy. Like we were, we, when we were down and it's, it's true because these kids had look at like, there's two different scenarios. One, you draft a kid and, and like he said, it's, it's your absolutely key. So you basically can hit on a guy and it could be your own worst enemy because you got to re-recruit him, right? And if you think that you can just like a, and I know that junior stuff's changed with CHL, but if you draft a college kid and he just starts going on a tear and you don't spend all of your time making sure that he's feeling more and fuzzy, uh, that he's still your property. He could just walk. Well, that's a, and that's a, and that's a tough one to take when it's happened, but then you, and it's funny too because let's typothetically without even a name. You, you hit somebody in the sixth round, right? And by the time he's ready to cook, he might be as good as your first rounder. Now you've got to, you've got, you talk about internal budgets and all that stuff. All of a sudden you've got to look and give a
guy you took in the sixth round. The only chance you have of keeping them is to give my first round deal. You got to give him the cap and it, it, it causes some kerfuffles and be in your own, in your own group. And then the college-free agent process is to you get caught up, you get caught up sometimes. Everybody's competitive, right? Sometimes you, you forget the player you're talking about because you'll want to win. You want them so bad that sometimes you almost overplay the value of the play. You absolutely do. And you're absolutely, because these guys, there's a reason for most of them why they're, they're available. There's, they're not, they're not, none of them are the perfect product. But if you can get the right one, like we were real fortunate with a couple of them that, and then there were some that the harder the recruitment and then when we got them, we were so elated that we were disappointed with the product. And I'm not going to nod. When we took, there was a kid Daniel Brickley, right? That everybody, there was like this massive, I remember Daniel Brickley. Like it was like when you sit there, like we joke our WW references. When this guy's a free agent and all the managers are just lined up to get him, to get him, to get him.
And we got him. And by the time we, we had almost, and I mean, not because the kid was an outstanding kid, but we had almost, we had made this path so shiny for him that there was not as much work done along the way with this game. And there was next, but he's always hanging out with Jonathan Quick in the summer and surfing with the boys. And we forgot you got, there's a, you know, this guy, you still got to make the team. Whereas a guy like Alex, I have follow, we talked to him on the phone, right? And we're waiting and we wonder, you know, how many weeks before we get his decision, he calls back like 10 minutes out of the phone call I'm coming. And look at, he's like the different. It's amazing. Some of these kids, you put all this into some, if they turn out great because you have to do the work, but there's other kids you put in and they just make a decision like that. There's a kid, can I, can I get shut up? Can you look this up, little Maddie on your thing? I'm pretty sure he's from the Toronto region. So one of the things that's kind of cool by default, and I'm not just suggesting that this kid didn't pop already before this year, but you know, I'll give you like when Nathan McKinnon placed her to Halifax,
Blue said's back in the day and McKenzie, we ears there, you know, we draft him in the summer drown. But guess what happens when you're in there watching Nathan McKinnon? Either guy, you're watching everybody, right? And this is somebody pops and it's like, wow, where this guy come from type of thing. At Penn State, everybody talks about McKinnon, but the D. Marceco kid, Matt D. Marceco, six foot, the 180 pound junior, he's 22 years old. So he's going to have to sign he's a PA guy. He's PA? Yeah. Okay. So these guys, as they age, if you sign a 24 year old, like TJ Hughes at the University of Michigan, he's going to be a one year deal. Then you're going to have time, you got to make a decision on him. But if you sign a guy like D. Marceco, depending on his birthday lands there, he's going to be a two probably a three year deal there, I think depending 2004. Okay. So he's already turned 22. This kid, D. Marceco, he can be the next outside followed. I don't say that lately. I think that that's what he can be because when he's when he's not scoring at the college level, his compete, his speed, his detail, everything else that he does, you know, I again, the big game, you know, I keep coming back to that. What are you
doing when you're not doing this? He's doing that. And that, that's a guy that I would absolutely target. Love his character, love his compete, love his consistency, love his detail, speed, decent size, can kill penalty, so you can do everything. So that's a, that's a guy to keep an eye on. Very valuable. Yeah, very valuable. Okay. And character is massive with those guys too, because they can get, as I said, Alex, I follow character out the wazoo because he's going to do all the work. Some of these kids are a little older too. Blake Lesot was another one, undersized. But any team he's on, they just talk about him being a spark plug. Yeah. Sean Walker, another kid. That's a good one too. Bright shot D, you know, LA moved on from him, but he's now a big part of Carolina Hurricanes. And the, and it said that one of the coolest things about when you go into these places, books, and I know you've been there before too, it's like saying, you're going for this guy. And he in there so many times, you got to watch this guy because he's the guy. And somebody else routinely catches your, just keeps catching your, I mean, for us, one of the big, I kept, we drafted Super Campbell up in the two-same re. And you know, you go up
and you do the whole thing practices and you're part of your group. And every time I was up there, I kept Jake Muzzan and Jordan Nolan. I'm just watching these guys go, what's going on? You know, and then you end up getting pieces that you never really thought you were looking for at the time. But they work out. Mario Ferrar was another one. 100%. Yeah. Okay, so Toronto Maple Leafs, there's a lot been made of what to do going forward. They don't have a lot of assets here. What is a more likely path this season? Is it to trade one of, or try to trade one of Matthews and or Nielander or both? Or do you look at the free agent market and say, hey, Charlie Coil makes us better. Darren Radish makes us better. And we're a playoff team if we're healthy. Get goal tending like we expected to get. What do you think is the more likely path for this team? Well, I guess I would say to you guys that outside of how the value of certain guys on this roster
in terms of how they play the game when they're at the top of their game, are you satisfied with the DNA, the makeup of this organization, the makeup of the player? So on the hardest day, is the makeup of the team projectable? Because they're not always going to score. You know, you're going to be doing different things. And if they answer that question is we need to change the built-in attitude of this group, then first of all, everything's on the table. That's that's my first one. I'm not trading awesome, Matthews. That's the second one. I do believe that awesome, Matthews game in terms of his goal scoring prowess. If you take a look at his statistics this year, overall, before he got hurt, like really, really, but do it with an open mind. I mean, he's a minus four. I believe he's well over 20 minutes. He's blocking shots. He's still scoring goals. You know, he's doing some so on about his 59% I believe in the face-off dots around there, 57, 50, whatever it was. There's a lot of good quality there. The other guy, though, the other guy, Neelander, that one there is, I don't, that's too loud as they fare for me. And I value the skill. I value it. He's actually
last year in playoffs was productive. But to me, guys, and I'm not trying to pick on anybody here. I'm just trying to be realistic. You can say what you just said. Better goal-tending, tan-up comes back, this, that, and the other thing. You don't know if any of that's going to happen. Sure. But what do you know? You know that the makeup of this group, so on the hardest day, isn't good enough to wait. It hasn't been built out to be to push back. And I'm not talking about last year when we're saying we got a shock blocker or we got to get this. That's not what I'm talking about. I think we're talking about the actual attitude of the group. And how do you have what do you have to do? You have to build that out again with new infrastructure. And that's going to come at the cost of assets. Right now, they don't have an abundance of assets in the lower end. Like, the Ottawa Senate is called the Cardiacum truck and Jordan Donovan this week. And they want a big game to the trade. Yep. And the Toronto Maple Leafs don't have any underbelly to call anybody up to do any of that stuff, right? It's the ship is sale, guys.
Like, it's been a long time. It's time to reinvent the wheel here a little bit and not a little bit a lot. But it's not going to start with math, just it might end up being that later on, but not right now. 59.7%. So he's almost 60% in the dot. It depends who's running the ship. First one thing, that's going to be the biggest question. If Brad's going to be the guy that's doing it, sure, with his current staff. If that's part of the change, that's huge. If it's an opinion question, I'm with books on the, it's just not as easy as saying, trade them all, right, ever get them out. I'm circling Austin Matthews as a guy that I want to keep, right? And I want to talk a long conversation. If that's what it has, they've already had one before he got hurt before the gold medal. And it's just seem to be an ongoing fiasco. And then it's almost like they've created this. Now he's a, he's a villain, so to speak. He's not in my opinion. He's one of the best sentiment in hockey. And when he gets healthy, he's a game changer. And you find a way to look at,
first of all, because of some of the mistakes that have been made in the past and asset management, you've got no room for error anymore. Like you can't, you can't have a, and I hate being, but you can't have a Dakota Joshua. You can't have long term guys wrapped up and they're not just here for a year. They're here for long term that you're not sure whether they're going to truly solve your DNA problem. So, and that's why last year, and this team clearly doesn't have that in the room in bulk, right? You can't tell me that Tanev's not the right kind of guy. These kind of guys, McCabe's not, these guys are the right kind of guys, but they're not, you almost, you need more of that. That's why in last year in the off season, I would instead of using up the cap space on the Dakota Josh was and the Michele's of the world. With this current group, I felt it would be just as important to add somebody like a Corey Perry or, you know, or even the role that Pack You Ready had the year before to insulate true leaders that understand what it is to be in a professional dress room and be leaders who don't cost you a lot. And I'm not saying, hey, these guys are like going to be, but they've, you've that, that, this group, that young group needs
to be insulated with that type of leaders that aren't going to take up your cap space and then if the right player becomes available, then maybe you move in on that. But it's also not as easy, Maddie is, and I'm not saying you said it was easy, but everybody else is looking at the same players, right? So if you think you can look at your wall and all of a sudden say that radish should look how much better we're going to be when we get radish and who else to judge. It's because I know this is what people think and coil. Damien's might not be available. They might not want to be trauma. You don't know all these things. Here's the problem. It you're bringing guys in to create something. And but the inmates have already been running the asylum feuds. That's my, that's where I'm conflicted. So the impact is maybe when you when you when you nurture assets through your system and now you have a built in DNA that is we have a certain way that we want to play a certain way we want to carry ourselves yada yada. Now when people come in, they become part of that. What what's happening right now is they're chasing people to come in to create. Does that make
sense? Like it's yeah, well, that's why I just I agree with you in the fact that I'd be putting I'd be putting kneelanders name out there, right? But I wouldn't be trying to put them out for a guy the same age to come in. That's where you've got you've got to get some young pieces and not pieces you're guessing on whether they're you've got to know these guys are going to be your foundation moving forward. It's going to be fascinating. They are walking the tight rope towards not non playoffs officially. We're getting closer. I wish they were walking towards a top five. Now they could win the lottery, but I just wish they were securely in that top five. Yeah, well, they're messing that up two books. All right, we got to get out of here. Thanks for coming in, pal. Yeah, nice to see you guys. Yeah, also big thanks to Ellie Freeman. Thanks to Mike, Jake, and Andrew. Thanks for the gift. Yes, thanks for thanks for the big gift. I love it. And give me those headphones. I'll give you a break back guys. And a big thanks to Mike Peter. Matt Barker. He's starting off. Bye, everybody.
