So I'm trying to recover from yesterday and we'll talk about what was, man, I can't remember a more thrilling, more interesting day of not just Olympic hockey, but maybe hockey period. That was just absolutely tremendous over in Italy as we await the start of the Women's Gold Medal game in Italy between Canada and the USA. American so dominant, 6 and 0 in this tournament, they've all scored a opposition. 31 to 1, including that five-nothing win over Canada.

2:02In fact, they've played the six games and four of the six games have included, have featured five-nothing results. USA is now one, it's last seven games against Canada and that includes the four games sweep of the rivalry series, not even close. So Canada goes in, this doesn't often happen in hockey, insulating on women's hockey, as I would say significant underdogs in this game. 7th year, no, 7th time in the last eight Olympics, it's Canada, USA in the final. But that five-one score you mentioned, Canada didn't have pooling in the lineup, it's going to be a factor today with her back in, it'll make the game much closer. But Canada's having trouble scoring goals, that's an issue in this tournament for them. Yeah, they shouldn't have to depend on, they'll tell you, they shouldn't have to depend on her or one person, on one leg getting two goals in the semifinal game that allowed them to get here.

3:03But best of luck to our country in that event, Canada, USA, okay, let's hit what happened yesterday in Man's Hockey over the Olympics. I'm still recovering, there were so many storylines from the one game, I mean, first of all, let's start here, including the other games of the conversation, three of the four games going to overtime, Rick, and even the Slovakia game and their victory over Germany, Slovakia arguably, the story with Slovakoski leading the way, the story of this tournament so far, surprising a lot of people, they look great. Well, with the Canadians, Donnie, look at their core, that young core in Montreal, boy, oh boy, if the connects could get a young core like that, someday, like they got in Montreal, Slovakia deserves to be there. Donnie is not like they had an easy schedule, they just had an easy time, they beat some good teams to get there and give them credit. And Slovakoski was injured in that game, but they advance and it's been quite, well,

4:09it's been quite the last 24 hours for Montreal Canadian fans to keep in mind, but Nick Suzuki was up to for Team Canada, scoring that late time goal, I'm still trying to wrap my head around. I know we talked about this a lot yesterday, but that three to check goal, and I've heard other people say this, because as I'm saying it yesterday, as often happens on this show, I'm saying something and I'm thinking to myself, no one else is thinking this way, I am completely out to lunch, I'll say it again, I've watched a lot of hockey, you've watched a lot of hockey, Ryan has watched a lot of hockey, Derek same thing, I've never seen anything like that, and I think it was so outrageous, like it was so unusable, and I'm not the only one who hasn't seen something like that, especially at this level, that it just doesn't register with anybody, didn't register with the officials, didn't register with the crowd, the broadcasters,

5:10Team Canada didn't complain, and the checks might have been aware of it at the end when they sent eight players on the ice to celebrate or make a line change, whatever they were doing, there were six players celebrating the goal, six skaters celebrating the goal, I just don't think it registered, because you made this point yesterday, usually too many men, that call is made when the puck's at near the bench, right, and a coach goes nuts and the players slam their sticks, Drew Doudy said, nobody, nobody thought about it till after the game, did they just flew over their heads, like how does that happen, how does six players for the opposition fly over your head, Drew Doudy said it best, he said we didn't even talk about it till after the game, that's the most stunning thing, how did somebody on the check by bench must have realized, and then afterwards for the check coach, this is unbelievable, to talk about the officiating, and he felt like they were up against six skaters, like

6:11I mean it was beautiful, it was incredible for him to say that, my God, what a game, and then of course the other story lines, just the Canadian come back, and it was poetic justice I think, because of the way, and the checks played a wonderful game, the way the check scored that three-two goal, with the two many men on the ice, all of that, it was poetic justice, that Suzuki ties it up, on to overtime they go, and then Marner blows by three check players to score that goal on the back end. Up the middle of the ice to boot, I mean protect the middle of the ice, and now the other situation, the other story line, out of that game, again I know we're going to miss some here, but Sidney Crosby leaving the game in the second period, looked like a knee injury is a leg buckled, got caught underneath him on the gooties hit, they had an optional practice today, he wasn't the only one, but he wasn't there, he didn't practice it.

7:15No surprise Donnie, it looks like a left knee injury, and John Cooper said today he's not ruled out for the tournament, it's day to day, we'll know more than 24 hours, but if you're thinking Donnie, it's not looking good for Crosby for tomorrow. And is there a rule that you have to have a captain at the Olympics? Yes. Because if he doesn't go, then the Cooper's got to name a new captain. Well that's easy. That's easy. That's easy. Connor McDavid. Yeah. It's got to be McDavid. There's no question about it. The other players who didn't take part of note, I mentioned Crosby, McKinnon, Martian, who's been dinged up throughout this tournament, and Kale McCar, who played close to 27 minutes yesterday for the Canadians. So that may be not a total surprise. Nathan McKinnon is not a 100% and of course that is of extra significance given what's happened to Crosby because you wonder if Crosby can't go and there are centers on this

8:21team playing on the wing, like Celebrini, you're not moving him away from McDavid, no way. Suzuki as well. But you wonder if McKinnon can drive his own line. But can he do, and look, normally absolutely, but if he is indeed dinged up, then can he drive his own line? If you wanted him to put him in place of Sydney Crosby in the centerised position versus that stacked first line with McDavid and Celebrini. Elliott Friedman did say McKinnon in his eyes, 100% is injured. They just don't know the severity of it. Don't forget Sam Bennett, he can come in help. Bolhorvat was moved to wing, Suzuki moved to center. The great thing about this Canadian team is strong up the middle of the ice. The centerised issue is the least of their concerns. No, but Sydney Crosby is not there. That's a concern. It's a concern. No question. And McKinnon now we're hearing is banged up. And then Don, you got Sam Bennett, he's had the flu or whatever, he missed the last game.

9:23He's not 100%. So they're running into some injury problems big time. And then the other storyline that really didn't get talked about enough yesterday. The Crosby injury, the comeback. Too many men on the ice, on the 3-2 goal, Jordan Biddington, when it counted, Canadian has outshot the checks. I get that. Dust all played fairly well, although I thought he slid over too far, he would tell you that on the winning goal. But Jordan Biddington made 21 saves, crucial ones. The breakaway, the nature's breakaway, late regulation, he made two saves on that break away, because nature's back, I want to say, backhanded the rebound, he had to make a save on that. Then there was a point blank save that he made in overtime, just before Marner scored. So it's a great clutch performance by Jordan Biddington. And do you know who a lot of people are comparing him today too?

10:25Who? Graphier. And that, you don't look, you're great for a significant period of time. And then clutch time rolls around and there he is. He's want to stand on the cup, for nation's title, and now what's happening here, again, the tournament is not over, but there's no question who is starting for Canada tomorrow against Finland and probably going forward. No issues in goal right now, I mean, he stops, netches, breakaway, then point blank over time. Come on. He's the least of their concerns right now, Biddington. Okay, so Canada Finland tomorrow as the women Canada versus USA gold medal game is just about to start. But Canada versus Finland tomorrow and the, the, the fins were done much like it seemed like the Canadians were done. They were down to nothing. To nothing. Not just down to nothing in the third period, they're down to nothing late with about six minutes left. They scored two goals for us over time. They end up winning it. That lineup is, and I know Barkhoff's not there, but there are so many good, any

11:29NHL players, they're high-skinned and scored one of the goals yesterday, Aho, another goal scorer yesterday, Hintzlandell, Rantin is there, Aho, they have game breakers just like the Czechs. I'm sorry, the Pastrannack goal, they got, at Rantin, they can do the same thing as Pastrannack. They've got danger, high-skinned, like you mentioned. This guy is, he plays 29 minutes game for Dallas. This is a pretty loaded Finland team. No question about it. Sarah Oson-Gull, and of course, Kevin Lankin, back up is Kevin Lankin, and that is the kind of. But again, the optional practice for Canada today, no surprise, no Sidney Crosby, McKinnon, Marshaund, and McCarr. You want to touch anything else? No, that's, well, Quinn Hughes, overtime goal. There is that. Well, okay, we mentioned storylines, and Quinn Hughes was, I don't think he can argue, the best player on the ice yesterday in that game. Look, very tight, probably think over. The USA was very impressive defensively in that game, it was a slog of a game.

12:34I don't think it was great to watch, but what they did was pretty impressive until the end. One mistake, one, one, and off they go to overtime where Quinn Hughes plays, plays hero. Three on three with Quinn Hughes is not fair. Did you see when he scored the goal? Well, I think he was out there two minutes time, like, I think he waved off a change as a matter of fact. I think he said, no, I'm not coming off. I mean, when you give that guy that much time in space, I'm sorry, but it's going to be disaster for the other team. So Quinn Hughes said, 27 and a half minutes of ice time yesterday, and you know, we're talking about him as if he still plays for the connoisseurs, still kind of a little hard to believe for people, but very, very good, meanwhile, in contrast, yeah, okay, you know what I'm going with this? Your favorite subject. Oh, your favorite medicine. So he plays nine minutes in that game. That's it. Nine minutes and no shifts, no shifts in third period and over time, over time.

13:34So people say he didn't get any shifts because the Swedes were looking for a goal. Well, that in itself is a problem. Why are the Swedes not looking for a goal from him? That's a problem because the Samhalam, your buddy feels he's not capable. And this is a player making 11.6 million dollars a year and look, if they were, if they were up one nothing, I think it's different because this is what he is now. He's a forward who not necessarily a center who doesn't necessarily get depended on offensively, but defensively. And that's fine. That's great. That's great. But that is not in line with his paycheck in Vancouver and a lot of people. I know we talk about him a lot. A lot of people have a problem with that. But proof in the pudding yesterday for the people and you're like this, who want to support him, you know, no matter what, but nine minutes and then you had a stat going back to the four nations. Well, four nations and the Olympics and eight games, Patterson's got two points.

14:38Look, here's my problem. He's playing with great hockey players and not elevating his game. That's a concern. Now he's going to come back to Vancouver and play for the 32nd place team in the national hockey league. If you can't elevate your game playing with Sweden's best, what are you going to do in Vancouver when you come back and you got pretty much what he's been doing? Well, you got a top six that can't score and Donnie is not elevating his game at a world class level with world class athletes and for his country and Sweden. I don't know what to say. It is what it is. It's frustrating. It is. Yeah. Okay. So here's what's coming up with the show. We've got to take a break. How are you, Ryan, by the way? Yeah. You saw Letterman last night. Well, well, I did. Is that the Orpheus? Queen Elizabeth. Queen Elizabeth. Okay. And it's good. It's really good. It much like his show on Netflix. Letterman show on Netflix. She did like an hour. Just headed to the airport after watching some riveting hockey yesterday. Wasn't that a fun day? Did you have fun watching that Canada game?

18:42Because I get so stressed out at the end, oh, it seemed like a lot of fun. But I get stressed out watching those games involve my country in the sport of hockey. You know what? I couldn't agree more. We all take pride in being objective in what we do. I have no problem watching the Vancouver conucks with a clear mind and being completely objective. It's different with Canada. It is. And whether it was the world's juniors for me before or team Canada, the Olympics, now it's incredibly stressful. And it's funny because we kind of chuckle a little bit like when you cover an Olympics and you go into a mix zone after, and reporters from China are there and it's state-run media. And they're basically gushing to the people they're interviewing about how proud they are of them and how proud their country is. And we're looking at this thing, what the? And then it happens in team Canada. And I remember sitting next to Joey Canward and Doug McLean in 2010 watching the game at

19:43Canada hockey house or whatever we were calling it at that time. And jumping up in the air and hugging, you know, we like we placed a loony bed on it and it was just such a stressful moment like you could cut the tension with the knife in that building. You know, yeah, you're right. Like it's actually not fun. So how do you watch a lot of hockey? How do officials? And apparently everybody else in the building and watching on TV missed six check skaters on the ice as they scored the goal ahead goal late in the third period. Don, there were eight check players on the ice. At the end. You're right. Yeah. And six of them were actually involved in the play. It's not like one guy was leaving and one guy was coming. And you look at the still that Thomas Grant posted, there were four guys in the shooting layman. So, you know, how you missed that is bizarre. I can't wrap my head around it. And to be honest, I do think the broadcast missed it, right? Like they were talking about it when it happened. It wasn't until after the fact that we saw, you know, and then some of the players kind

20:43of knew about it after the fact and they kind of let it go. But yeah, like with the stakes, just imagine if it had gone the other way. I got officiating. Crew has got to be so happy that that goal didn't decide the game. Hey, far ahead. So, there's Quinn Hughes over time goal, the Americans, when they need him, he's there. There's Patterson. No shifts in the third period yesterday. The switch apparently didn't need him. It looks like another disappointing tournament for him. Yeah. And we thought he'd turn the corner when he scored the two goals in the third period of the game, you know, earlier in the week, and, you know, he looked more engaged. But yeah, I mean, at the start of the tournament, they had him playing on a lower line and even when he got some better line-mates, it didn't necessarily last. And you're right, like in those key situations for him, not to be on the ice, it says a lot. I think there's a bit of carry-over coming out of the four nations. He certainly hasn't done enough this season to change the narrative on him and the eyes of the Swedish Olympic Federation, right? Like they knew what he did this year and just the lack of productivity. So he's not necessarily seen as that guy anymore.

21:46And when we saw those two goals, I think all of us kind of hoped that that was going to lead to something that, eventually, he was able to use when he came back to Vancouver just a different level of confidence. And I understand that he's going to be playing with better players and Sweden than he is here. But just, you know, we've gotten to the point over the last two years where even the smallest successes, we're going to read everything into because we're desperate for this guy to get even close to where he was a couple of seasons ago. And it just feels like, you know, no matter how close we get, we're just not close enough. Hi. It's hard not to feel for Filipino, okay? In 13 months, he's had two concussions. Wow. Left Utah with migraines, pucking the head and practice yesterday. This guy can't catch a break since he's coming to Vancouver. No, he can't. And there's no doubt. And, you know, he's a guy that, when you get a chance to talk to, he's just an engaging guy, a really nice guy. And you want to see him have some success in his career. And more than anything else, whether he has on-ice successor or not, you want him to have health, right? You want him to be able to play with his kids after you want him to be able to just have

22:47a normal, functional life. And he wants to keep playing hockey, right? And he's not ready to move on. I know when he came back the last time, he was kind of dismissive of just the number of concussions he had had and whether they were all concussions and what was being reported. But either way, there's something going on there. And so it doesn't sound like this puck to the face is going to lead to more symptoms or things like that. But, you know, at the end of the day, you have your right, you know, like, of all the players to get it by Brock Besser's shot, Filipino. Unbelievable. I know something close to your heart, SFU. Now it looks like hockey and lacrosse has gone, football has gone. What are these guys doing? Like, is there going to be any sports left there at all? Yeah, look, it's a university that is just not serious about athletics. And it's sad when you consider the athletic history that's up there. Heck, bond doesn't find as a wife without SFU athletics. There you go. Let's put that right at the Mount Rushmore. You bring that up every week? Yeah. I know, but that's because she pays me. So look, at the end of the day, the hockey and lacrosse programs are not varsity teams. They should make them easier to miss.

23:48But it's actually the opposite because these programs are costing the university any money. So they decide to drop the hockey program because they don't want them traveling to the states. This was a club team that funded themselves. They made their own decisions. Yeah, they wore the jersey, but they were barely getting up any from the university. That program put a proposal together when SFU made them move to use sports. They put a proposal together that would have cost the university zero dollars to make them not a use sports team, but a non varsity team, which they currently are, that could have played as the 10th team in use sports in men's and women's hockey, like hockey in this country, especially in the women's side. When you look at the P.W.H.L. and how it's growing, for them to have added a women's program and no cost to them, that's a tap in putt, like that's a one foot putt, not an eight foot putt. Like you have to make that. And yet school just sat in the proposal for three weeks and then said, nope, not interested. And you know, the lacrosse situation as well. I mean, this is a group that they raised their own money. They do it themselves. They, you know, they run an academy for younger players and what I mean, like it's just,

24:52it was a needless decision. So much of it was optics, but typical of this administration and leadership at SFU, they get it wrong on a regular basis. What was that problem with traveling to the states far ahead? If that indeed is not the reason. Money. Yeah, I mean, like it just all the political issues around that, right? And you probably got some faculty members who just think, nope, we don't want to support American economics. And, you know, and I get all of that to a point, right? But at the same time, this is a program that's been going on for a long time. They raised their own money. They have their own successes. The last time the SFU men's hockey team will play will be at the University of Michigan for a trip. They paid for themselves without university assistance. Think about the optics of that. Like this is the type of schedule they've been playing. They've been, you know, they've been doing well with it with no scholarships with no support from the school. Even that wasn't enough for the school to just say, yep, we'll let you keep playing. Yeah. You know, something wrong with a Canadian university not having hockey and lacrosse when it's, when they're not the, they're not the buck up for it.

25:55Hey, very quickly, a far-hand finish game tomorrow, a four team Canada. And John Cooper talked about this or hinted at this. Do you think the adversity they faced against the checks will help them? I mean, the Finns faced adversity as well. Keep that in mind. Yeah, for sure, right? Like, I mean, at the end of the day, this team hadn't been tested. They hadn't dealt with adversity. They hadn't even trailed. So the fact that they can go through this is important. But I'll tell you this, like the Finns, to me, were awesome in this tournament. Like in the, you know, you can always kind of grade the round robin on a bit of a curve because you're not necessarily playing great teams all the way through. But I thought the Finns looked as impressive, if not more impressive than anybody. So, you know, the fact that they stubbed their toe, the Canadian stubbed their toe, the Americans obviously did. They all managed to get through. You can't say the American stubbed their toe, Sweden's illegitimate opponent. But like, that's going to be like a significantly difficult game for Canada to get through. Like the Finns are no joke at all. Farhan, thanks for doing this, safe travels, my friend.

Yeah no problem I know you're busy with the hockey and with school but are you able to find time to watch the Olympics and and team Canada and women? 52:47lots of Americans on the team there's been lots of chirping kind of heated heated troops and all good fun but yeah it's been fun I mean obviously with the women going today it's going to be good and men come up as well it's been awesome to kind of watch those players play at the highest all against the best the best Hey Keaton can you put into words how excited you are now and is it hard not to look ahead to June? Yeah for sure I mean it's it's an exciting time it's something I've been looking forward to for so long even just being in this year kind of being in my draft years is something that I've been looking forward to for a while and kind of a a cool unique unique experience that I take with with such huge honor and pride so yeah looking forward to the to the draft is definitely a fun thing to do but just trying to focus and go day by day here in North Dakota and do it I can show up to the ranked every day to kind of make our team and myself better to hopefully

53:49push for championship at the end of the year. Our bosses are in Victoria's we have to ask you this question Keaton but how would you describe you're touched on it there how would you describe your experience at North Dakota after a couple of seasons with the Victoria Royals? Yeah it's been awesome I mean the Royals were we're such an an amazing organization with with so many good people and such a great coaching staff and support staff and and everyone there I really just appreciated and really we're we're helpful in my upbringing kind of and my start to my junior career and then come to North Dakota and having having the year that I've that I've been able to have here with the teammates that I have has been has been really good as well just kind of the team we have the older guys that are that are able to help teach some of the younger guys I mean our team kind of started the year we have we have 10 freshmen and and a couple transfers as well so a lot of us were new and kind of having those older guys that came in and and kind of showed us the way to to get us kind of all going in the same direction

54:49has been good and I think ever since started the year our teams just kind of been on upward trajectory and I think the most important thing for us is just to keep getting better here so we're playing our best hockey when the important times come. Keaton a most important thing and I don't know if everybody knows is you are a gold tender till I think age 12 or 13 and now you're one of the best defensemen in the world for your age group like how do you go from goalie to one of the top defensemen in the world. Yeah I don't know I think maybe a different point of view you get growing up playing goalie but I think for me it was just kind of playing goalie for for the first kind of a couple years in my hockey career was a funny thing but my all my dad and all the people my dad's side played goalie growing up so I kind of fell into that fell into that trap a bit early and then early after that I kind of just jump right into it I mean I have like obviously I love hockey and kind of playing and

55:49doing whatever I can to get better so whether it's me out in the outdoor ring for hours or in the gym or doing the extra stuff that I can do that's kind of been my journey to get to where I am now it hasn't been all just came to me quickly it's been some hard work but I'm happy to put in the work and I'm happy to try and get better for myself my teammates as well you're going to be a high pick on the draft this summer very high you met with a Vancouver connoxer I had a meeting with him recently not too long ago how did that meeting go with the connoxer Keaton? Yeah it's awesome I think me and them was was really cool I mean like I said it's kind of a unique experience to go through this draft process and you know obviously talking with Canadian teams and such a great organization like Vancouver was was quite an honor and if it ends up happening that's a spot I'd go I'd be really honored to play there and kind of have that opportunity to be that next generation of connox that can

56:49really put together a solid team and be a competitive team year out to really push for a championship and that end goal that everybody wants and everyone of the connoxer organization wants and I think every organization and HL2 just to be able to have that chance to win the Stanley Cup well you're from Alberta but you already got a BC connection you played U-15 in a clona and your coach was Jerome McGinnell I think you billeted with him too how was it being coached in living with Jerome McGinnell? Yeah it was awesome Jerome was was such a huge influence on my career obviously he was kind of one of my coaches in my earlier start of defense so kind of having him growing up from U-15 all the way to U-18 was super important and super helpful for my my development on the ice he's obviously the stuff he can teach you just from all the his experience and whole fame experiences is out of this world and then obviously the stuff off the ice

57:49also really really really had so many things to learn from him just kind of the the way he's able the way he carries himself and the way he acts off the ice and around his family and around people in the public as well I mean I remember going to we'd be in Calgary for tournaments and obviously being the guy he is there there are so many people that would come up to him and just kind of seeing him the way you would treat those fans and the way you would treat everybody with such respect with something that I really I really have learned from him and it really taken pride in myself doing as well just treating everybody with the same amount of respect whether they're a fan family or a friend everybody deserves that same amount of attention We're trying to get him on the show Jerome again on the show kit next time you see him Keaton it's Donnie and Dolly check come on and help the word for us help us if you don't mind 17 you were you're 17 years old and I know you're on top of the world right now at the level you're at but what improvements do you feel you have to make?

58:51Yeah I mean for sure like I kind of said I was a Goliathall as 11 so there's only up from here but kind of working on my skating for sure just kind of working on that transition and quick and quick kind of agility as well obviously being a bigger guy still not to say growing into my size but still kind of figuring out figuring out my body and figuring out the way it moves it's best so kind of putting that work and for me I know within the next couple of years there's going to be huge jumps in my skating and really everything too I mean there's still so much kind of off the ice training and I'm able to do here and that's another huge reason why I came in North Dakota just to have the opportunity to get those extra practice times to get those extra times in the gym I mean we have the best of the best facilities I'm sure you've probably seen some of the books at the Ralph so it's the best of the best I mean if you're a player that wants to get better and has that drive North Dakota is the place to be

59:53Yeah I was just going to ask you why was this the right move for you but I think you just answered that question does it make it a little easier for you having Cole Rushney your former Victoria teammate in North Dakota with you Yeah big time I mean obviously the type of player he is on the ice he's so helpful in that sense and then to be able to come here with him as just a person the person he is has been super has made the transition easier for both of us I think just to come to North Dakota with a familiar face was was something that kind of wasn't set in stone and wasn't by no means a package deal but when it works out the way it does it was pretty awesome to come here and have that that guy beside you that you kind of already know and have a little bit of relationship with that help build and grow with your teammates, your new teammates as well I know you're only 17 but have you ever seen a team scoring an important goal like the checks did yesterday with six players on the ice

1:00:53and it doesn't get called no I never have I mean I didn't even notice that right it was right as a half detail you kind of see all this deal with stuff after I mean it's kind of it's crazy how that goes on notice with so many kind of so many viewership too going on I mean it came all pretty quickly after but no one ever seen that it was kind of a maybe a blue cabin and we'll see what see what happens but it was pretty fun to watch no matter what made for an exciting game and just just glad Canada got got that win over time and got to move on Keaton this has been a pleasure this has been great all the best with uh with college hockey in North Dakota and certainly in in June with the draft yeah awesome thank you guys very much you bet Keaton Verhoff right handed defenseman North Dakota fighting a hawks out of a fort Saskatchewan they are 23 seven and oh over all 15 and five additional collegiate uh hockey conference in in conference play
