Extraordinary Thrift Store Opens in Carrboro

0:00From Durham, this is your March 2nd update. A new thrift store opened in Carborough this week, bringing fresh job opportunities to the community. Extraordinary thrift store held its ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, February 27th, at 125 West Main Street. Run by the Chapel Hill nonprofit Extraordinary Ventures, it focuses on employing adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The space used to house community works, which shut down last December. Extraordinary Ventures started renovations in January, and soft opened the doors on February 20th. They have already hired more than 20 people, including 12 who carried over from the previous store, and 10 with disabilities. This fits right into the nonprofit's mission, which also runs a laundry service, event center, and cleaning crew. Leaders say the store offers more public interaction for employees than their other businesses, helping fight stigma around unemployment for people, with disabilities. Right now, 90 folks are on the waiting list for jobs, the store stocks close, dishware, home decor, jewelry, and leftovers from the old owner.

1:08It accepts donations in the back lot from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. They plan to keep partnerships with local groups like schools and refugee services. Community leaders and locals are excited about the organized setup and job creation.
