This right here is the daily tech news for Tuesday, March 17th, 2026. Happy St. Patrick's day. We tell you what you need to know. Give you some important context and faith and baguara help each other understand. Today Nvidia announced a lot about its profitable data center chips at GDC, but gamer backlash against DLSS 5 is getting a lot of attention. That's funny. The first stories I saw were all like, oh, this is good. And then like immediately everyone not liking it. Me, oh, I'm Tom Merritt. I'm Sarah Lane. Let's start with what you need to know with that big story. Yes. Indeed, we have a lot to tell you from Nvidia. So we'll save the DLSS 5 stuff till the end. But let's start with the data center stuff. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang made several big announcements. First and foremost, they are confident about making money previously.

The company forecast it would make $500 billion in sales from Nvidia's data center chips by the end of 20, 20, 20, 26. Monday, Wang extended that by another year for a total of more than a trillion dollars by the end of 2027. So he really didn't increase it. He just said, we'll keep making $500 billion. Maybe a little more to further make that case for the market being real, that this is not a bubble. Roche, the pharmaceutical manufacturer said it has deployed more than 3,500 blackwell GPUs, calling it quote, the greatest announced GPU footprint available to a pharmaceutical company company company. Nvidia also discussed deals with IBM, HP Enterprise, Adobe and Uber. Uber is going to use Nvidia to handle fleets. It's going to handle the fleets that run on Nvidia autonomous car software. BYD and Glee also going to be using Ed Nvidia's autonomous taxi platform as well. We also have chips because it's Nvidia. Nvidia announced the Nvidia GROC3 LPX.

It's first product to come from its acquisition of the talent behind chip maker GROC because that weird thing where GROC still exists, but they like basically bought everybody from GROC to come over to Nvidia. We must always remind you though that this GROC has nothing to do with XAI's GROC. That is with a K. This one's with a Q. The GROC with a Q. Two different. Two different. Very different. Both in A. This isn't the definition of trademark confusion when you have to anyway. The GROC with a Q, 3 LPX is an inference server rack with 256 GROC language processing units or LPUs and 128 gigabytes of SRAM. That's where all the RAM is. They'll be manufactured by Samsung on a 4 nanometer process and be available in the second half of the year along with the previously announced Rubin server racks. Roughly speaking, the Rubin chips are for training your models and LPUs are for inferencing

AKA answering your queries. If you would like an orbital data center, which is an actual thing being explored by multiple companies, not just the one you've heard of, Nvidia announced space one Vera Rubin, a space oriented version of Rubin with 25 times the space based inferencing of the H100 that it sent up into space. It will be used to operate an orbit by ether flux, axiom space, Kepler communications, planets, Sophia space and star cloud. Sarah, I imagine you're wondering, but what about open claw? Yes. That was my next question. Well, I'm glad you asked. Nvidia is getting into the open claw game with Nemo claw, which adds Nvidia's agent tool kit to open claw. Among other things, that adds some privacy and security tools, specifically new open source security runtime called open shell. The new product is formally known as the Nvidia Nemo claw stack for the open claw agent platform. Okay.

I'm at the speed. Yeah, yeah. We'll be throwing that one around right and left. Nvidia announced the Nemo tron coalition, along with thinking machines lab cursor and mistroll to develop an open model trained on the Nvidia DGX cloud. And looking to the future, the next generation of data center GPUs after Rubin will be named after Richard Feynman. So their tradition of naming after physicist will continue and video announced it will sell computers running on its own virus CPU. So it didn't give as many details about CPUs this time as I kind of expected, but they did indicate that they'll be putting those in computers that you can buy. All right. You gamers got an announcement whether you liked it or not. Nvidia showed a preview of DLSS five. What it does is real time rendering to add realisting lighting and some coloring to go along with it to game frames, which make computer images look more realistic. DLSS five will come this autumn. If you have an Nvidia 50

series GPU, you can use it. Major publishers, including Bethesda, Capcom, NC soft 10 cent and Warner Brothers games will support it. And they showed demo video of it being used in resident evil Requiem Hogwarts legacy Starfield and EA sports FC. If you're concerned about how this changes the aesthetic Nvidia's Jacob Freeman said developers, quote, have artistic control over DLSS five's effects to ensure they maintain their games aesthetic. So even though it's changing the look, the developer controls how it changes the look. Bethesda back this up by posting on X this will all be under our artist control and totally optional for players. You can not turn on DLSS five if you want to. Now, the people are complaining that this is AI slop. A lot of people think it looks bad. A lot of people think it looks great. Sarah, what do we think? Well, so my my initial reaction because I've always I've always thought and I think it was one of the articles that I read about

this this morning is, you know, someone saying we're just used to those video game characters who sort of have the dead eyes. Yeah, they they they look human-esque, but not really. I mean, you know the difference. And this makes them look a lot more human. And for me, because I don't do a lot of gaming, none of these games that I saw examples of this on, I have personally played. When I looked at the examples of before and after, you know, which was Nvidia's kind of PR thing, I was like, wow, that looks way better. Isn't this great? But I can I you know, thinking into it a little bit more, not necessarily just as the end player, but as the artist who put a lot of work into something looking a certain way, maybe it is supposed to look a certain way. And this reminds me a lot of you know, when you mention AI Slop, that sort of like AI making everybody look more beautiful, you know, like you look younger, you know, your hair is better, you know, your your the bags

under your eyes are gone. And that is not necessarily a bad thing. I mean, I use it on Streamyard. But but it also it does tend to make everybody look a little bit more the same in the same way. And I can see where people say, no, no, no, no, let me decide if I want to do that or not. And to Nvidia's point, you can yes, you can say, I don't I don't want to use this. As an artist, you can say, we're going to dial this back a little bit more or you know, make this work for us a little bit more. I don't think Nvidia is doing anything wrong here. I can't really see a reason that someone would be hateful of this unless you just say, I don't want AI to be on top of the artistic product that I was given initially. Yeah, it's definitely feels like an I object to the idea of this being some kind of algorithm that is making this look the way it looks.

I thought it was interesting. The register felt like, yeah, it looks like a really good AI generated photo, but that still looks better, which you know, the register isn't known for pulling its bunches. So I was I was very curious to see that take. Whereas in gadget was was like, this is a bunch of slop. This looks horrible. This looks like the kind of thing that's made by Sora and VO and you can tell. And I don't like it. And I think both those opinions are perfectly justifiable. However, I think as long as it's up to the game maker to say, yes, this is how I want it to look. We are getting very, very close to just dismissing tools out of hand because they're tools, which is sort of a a Luddite position rather than actually judging whether they make a better video game or not. Yeah. And I'd love for anybody who does have a strong opinion about this and you know who you are out there to say, I want something to be as photo realistic as possible. Because to me, these do look more realistic. You know, they look like real people more

than the original versions. But do you want that? Is that something that you're looking for in your gaming experience? And maybe for some people it's like, no, no, no, it's a little too much. And also a little too much kind of in the same way, the lighting, you know, the wrinkles. It is, it's definitely, it's adding a, it's basically an Instagram filter. Yeah. For our memories. Very similar. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, sometimes we don't want realism. That's why we have cell shaded graphics. That's why we like eight bit and 16 bit games and stuff. But I think that there is a place for video games to be more photo realistic and it seems like that's something most video gamers have appreciated in advances up till now. But yeah. You know, I'm curious if there's somebody who says that I have an objection that I don't think is just anti LLM. I think this looks bad because of this. I'm curious what that that argument because I'm sure there's some good arguments in that vein out there. I know you've talked about a lot of other stuff that Nvidia announced. I would like

to know more about the partnership with Roach just because we hear a lot about, you know, the pharmaceutical industry getting so much more power to make us all live forever. I think that's not necessarily what they're saying here. But it's like, okay, great. What are we going to cure faster? I want to know more about that. I love the idea of it. It's like, give it to the people who are going to cure cancer. Thumbs up. But how? How? How are we doing that? There's clearly good articles out there about drug discovery and how these algorithms can like do lots of protein folding, for example, to be able to accelerate drug discovery. But I'm with you. Roach seemed to be there to prop up in video saying, look, we're selling plenty of chips. And I am also, maybe this isn't the place for it, but I'm also curious like what comes out of being able to use all that power from Roach. Specifically, I'm with you on that. Indeed. Tom, as one foldable opens, another closes the window. Oppos Find N6 with an almost invisible crease almost has launched in Asia, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand. Quite a few markets there. At the same time, Samsung told Bloomberg it is ending sales of its Galaxy Z trifold, which launched in South Korea just back in December. Once inventory in the US has sold out, it will be discontinued here as well. It's also listed as sold out on the Samsung site. So it may be available in some stores, but basically they had a first run and they're taken their workshop home. It was only ever available directly from Samsung as well. Last month, Samsung COO of mobile

said the company hadn't decided if we would make a follow-up trifold. Yeah, so this clearly was a test. They just wanted to make it show they could make it, put it out there, see what it was good for. I imagine some of the aspect ratio management that they had to do to make this work will be useful in your buy folds as well. I just made I just said that as I was saying it, I was like, is that right? It makes sense. It's what I call my wallet. So yeah, I think there is a place for a trifold. People seem pretty excited about it. I think the price was too expensive. It's interesting to see Samsung pull it so fast, but I can't imagine somebody in China isn't going to continue along the trifold. We've already seen a couple of models out there. This is not going to go away. The Galaxy Z trifold was what? 2400 bucks? Yeah. I mean, come on. That is cost

prohibitive. If you are really interested in form factors and you've got the disposable cash, great. You could buy four MacBook Neos with that. Yeah, I think this is really good. This is a great way for Samsung to be like, okay, who's into this? Who's using it and why? And then they can come back to the table. Yeah. I think I'm curious what they learn from this. I don't get the sense that this will be like, that's it. We tried it. It didn't work. See you later. But will they try a different take on it? Will they hold off until they can bring the price down? I mean, that is one of the things is that the price of materials for these things is only going up as we're going to hear later in the show. So maybe it takes a couple of years off before they bring it back. I think also the idea of having three screens, the trifold, when it's fully folded out, can be a little daunting for the average person. I mean, myself included. It's like,

I'm looking at one screen right now, granted, my desktop monitor is quite large. So I don't need another one. But it's like, if you're using three different screens and you want to make the most of it, I think some people are kind of like, I don't know. I mean, what do I do on the third one? It just unfolds into one big one. The idea isn't to use three screens at once. The idea is just to unfold it and like, oh, now I've got a tablet size screen. Yeah. But again, it introduces a layer of complexity that I don't know if it's a problem being solved. It's just more of like a, look what we did. I wonder if they can take a cue from what Oppo did, which is pretty amazing to like use droplets to engineer the hinge so it has as little creases possible so that it's almost invisible to the human eye. I wonder if Apple's going to do something similar to that. Is that another reason Samsung wants to hold off? Is they want to get their display tech up to snuff to do what Oppo and possibly Apple are going to do in which case they could then make it so

that it's like, yeah, it's, it's just a phone. And then you could make it slightly bigger or tablet size, you know, and you'll never see a crease. Maybe that makes it feel less complex. The information reports that OpenAI signed its contract with AWS to sell OpenAI products to the US government for use in both classified and unclassified work that that confuses you. AWS has a contract to sell cloud services that are approved. Basically, they host them. OpenAI has a deal with the government to let them use their products. Now they needed this to be like, they'll be hosted on AWS so they can be provided to the US government. This of course follows OpenAI's agreement to provide services to the US Department of Defense. That of course also follows the DOD's decision to stop using products from Anthropic within the next six months. If you missed all that or maybe you just want to refresh it, let's bring you back up to speed on what happened with Anthropic. Because I feel like this story has been moving really fast and it's worth taking a step back and

like providing the context again. So Anthropic has provided its products to the US Department of Defense starting in 2024. This has been a couple of years and they are providing basically the same cloud that you use yourself. This isn't some special version that does different things. It's been adapted for government work. So it has some modified safety filters to meet government standards. It has better handing of classified data, but it's caught. It's a chatbot. Anthropic learned that its tools were used in the operation to bring Venezuela and President Maduro to the US for trial. And in discussions about that, two points of contention emerged. This is where I think a lot of people are playing fast and loose with what happened. So I think this is worth going over again. Anthropic did not want the Department of Defense to use its tools combined with publicly available commercial tracking data, something you can just go and buy from data brokers. Because with Claude, you can use that data to de-anonymize people and Claude or Anthropic did not want the

DOD to de-anonymize data about US citizens. That is technically legal. So the DOD says, hey, if it's legal, we should be able to do it. Anthropic saying, yeah, it is. It's legal because we haven't thought about it before. Let's wait until the law catches up with the practice because we think maybe there'll be some guidelines built around this. And the DOD said, no, we'd rather not. The second one is the one that gets most of the attention, which is autonomous systems. And this one I think also gets pretty misunderstood. Anthropic didn't want its tools used to inform autonomous systems to choose targets. Remember, this is just Claude. But they were basically like, you could ask Claude like, where's the missile launcher? And Claude would say, it's right there. These coordinates, you could make a system that would then pick those coordinates and fire against them without a human intervening. However, Claude isn't good enough not to make mistakes and pick the wrong target. And Anthropic said, until our products are improved to make fewer mistakes, we don't want to be on the hook for that. Exactly. The DOD just didn't want that to be in the contract.

They weren't about to start doing that. But they're like, we want the latitude to be able to move on this once we think it's good enough. And Anthropic wanted to determine when it was good enough. So discussions broke down over all of this, which caused the DOD to threaten to declare Anthropic a supply chain risk on February 27th. However, I think this also gets lost in a lot of the reporting. The two sides were actually close to a compromise. They were apparently two or three words away from an agreement on March 4th when that slack chat from Anthropics CEO was made public in which he claimed the company was being punished for a lack of dictator style praise. That caused the DOD to just break the whole thing off. They followed up with a formal letter to Anthropic declaring it a supply chain risk. It's still unclear if any of the other steps, including notifying Congress, that are required by law have been taken. And of course, because of that, in part, Anthropic is suing to reverse the designation, a hearing on a stay of the designation, while the court case proceeded is scheduled for March 24th. So in next week, we'll find out

if Anthropic can get the DOD to not use that supply chain risk designation. Am I call me crazy? Please, Tom. If I am, I know I am, but call me crazy. When we're talking about the slack chat, I understand that feathers will get ruffled by somebody saying something like that. This did not seem like that big a deal to me, you know, unless you just, you have a fragile ego. Emotions run high in these sorts of situations. I could imagine a scenario where someone says, look, it's very clear now to us how you really feel. Let's just not do business with each other. That would be the reasonable reaction to that becoming public. If that's how you're talking to your employees, let's just not do business. Yeah, we can go with somebody else. Instead, they had already done the supply chain risks thing. So they basically were like, well, we told you we threatened and then they went ahead and did it. Yeah. Well, TechCrunch has a report on a startup named Ruby. That's our UBI, which is developing a

way to turn carbon dioxide into cellulose, which could be used for things like making clothing. Other startups have used bacteria for similar conversions, but Ruby uses a cascade of enzymes to process waste CO2 and uses some machine learning algorithms to boost efficiency. The enzymes float in a solution and as CO2 is added, the cellulose suitable for high-quality tech tiles appears within minutes, supposedly. Clothing Retailer H&M is one investor in this project. Yeah, which is why TechCrunch put H&M in the headline, but H&M isn't really part of the science here other than funding it. I'm sure they would take advantage of it. The idea here is pretty fast, though. It's faster than the bacteria synthesis. I don't know that this is going to take significant amount of CO2 out of the atmosphere, frankly, but every little bit helps, right? And if you can buy a shirt that took CO2 out of the atmosphere and was made even if it's synthetic

in a way that is considered environmentally responsible, I'm sure you can sell a few more shirts. H&M not exactly known for having the most environmentally responsible fast fashion on the planet. So I can see where a large retailer like an H&M or a Zara or a Forever 21 or just big box stores being able to make a t-shirt that, sure, it sounds good on paper. We took some CO2 out of the atmosphere and made a t-shirt, but made it cheaply, I think, is the key here. Yeah. I wonder, I mean, there's a lot of clothing. So I'd be curious what the numbers are on how much would get removed. There are other uses for textiles like this, long chain textiles like this that are industrial out there. And I wonder if you could get somebody who's like, actually, that's going to be good use in our industrial process, where we need this sort of thing. Maybe, you know, some kind of material for manufacturing of equipment or something.

Scientists at cortical labs in Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia, who previously taught lab-grown neurons to play pong have trained a petri dish of 200,000 human brain cells to play doom. Yes, human brain cells have joined the ranks of things you can run doom on. For comparison, the average human brain has 86 billion neurons. So this is quite a bit smaller than a fully working human. Of course, they asked him, like, do you think this is sentient? Do you think it's conscious? He's like, I don't think so. That's not very many. It does show that you don't need that many neurons to play doom, though. If you're really good at doom, you're not taking up too much of your brain. You might wonder where these neurons were sourced. They came from one of the scientists,

Han Wenchang, but they didn't take them out of his brain. They took 10 milliliters of blood and then turned the white blood cells back into pleuripotent stem cells. This is a common practice that you can use for lots of different things. And then once you have a pleuripotent stem cell, you can program it to become a different kind of cell and they programmed it to become a brain cell. So I don't think it has Han Wenchang's memories. It's just white blood cells that were turned into brain cells. You then place those on a glass chip. You interface with electric pulses and then some special code was written to convert game info. So things like your health, your enemy position, your own position into data signals that the neurons could understand. The neurons then fire in ways that are interpreted as control signals like left, right, or shoot. The neurons at first weren't doing very well. They would take a couple of steps, maybe shoot an enemy and then stop, but they got better as they played the game more. And this could be the more important part of this is scientists learning how those cells were able to learn could help us

understand the wider workings of the brain. Chong says he'd like to get it to play Pokemon next, but also maybe some more practical things like modeling diseases to test drugs for conditions like epilepsy. Pokemon first, of course. Then we'll go into something like epilepsy. But okay, so this is fascinating to me. The idea that brain cells can play doom, I'm sort of like, okay, good for you. I don't really know. I understand that it's a proof of concept. But the idea that you can take white blood cells out of my body, at the blood lab, and then turn them into what eventually become brain cells, which could then help me in the future say, I have epilepsy. I mean, I don't have epilepsy, but I've definitely had some brain issues in the past. That is huge. That's a big deal. I don't know how we leap from fun, you know, game playing stuff to that. But it seems like we're getting there.

Yeah. And the pluripotent stem cells is kind of old tech at this point. You know, you can, you've, they've made petri dishes of brain cells for lots of reasons, including playing pong. You know, so getting it to be able to use more of them to do more things, and like you say, and then be able to say like, oh, we can now treat your epilepsy. And maybe specifically yours by growing your brain cells in the petri dish, and then seeing how they react to different drugs, and going, this is the one that will work, and then administering to you. That's pretty great. And all sorts of neurological things, you know, could be epilepsy, Parkinson's, yeah, I mean, you know, all sorts of, you know, frontal lobe stuff that people suffer from. It is that, you know, the medical, the medical side of all of this is always very fascinating. So, you know, kudos to Honweng Chong, who's like, use my white blood cells. These make you feel smarter, don't they? I'm pretty sure they do. Medical equipment maker Striker, that Striker with a Y, says the attack on its systems was contained to its internal Microsoft environment, and its products are safe to use. It's begun restoring its internal systems as well. That is good news. Amazon is relaunching its three hour delivery windows in 2,000 U.S. cities with one hour delivery back in hundreds of cities. This is for up to 9,000 select products. So, not everything, but, you know, that Amazon prime now that they used to have. They're not calling it that, but it's coming back. Pittsburgh's Gecko Robotics has signed a deal with the U.S. Navy to make robots and sensors for inspecting large equipment, starting with 18 ships in the U.S. Pacific

fleet. Sam Altman's tools for humanity company has launched agent kit. This is a way for commercial website to use TFH's world ID, you know, the orb thing that scans your eye. It can use those identifications to verify that there is an actual human being and which human being is being represented by agents. Google has added desktop mode to Android 16 QPR 3. So, developers can test how their apps work in advance of Android based desktop and laptop computers. It's coming. Following a release of Android for users in August, WhatsApp users on iOS test flight can now also test guest chats. This lets you send a link to somebody who doesn't have a WhatsApp account, but still have a chat with them. Nintendo released an update for the Switch 2 that adds handheld boost, handheld mode boost, rather, for instances where an original Switch game looks kind of blurry and handheld mode on the Switch 2. So, the mode essentially provides the same upscaling that you

get in docked mode, which will use the battery faster. Yeah, you make the trade off, but at least they're letting you do it. Wall Street Journal reports that open AI CEO of applications, Fiji Simo, told employees in an all hands meeting last week that the company, quote, cannot miss this moment because we are distracted by side quests. We really have to nail productivity in general and particularly productivity on the business front. That's on how Fiji Simo sounds at all. Basically saying, like, let's not get distracted doing what sounds like consumer level stuff. Like they're saying, let's go fully business. Let's go fully enterprise. SK Groups chairman told reporters at GTXC that the supply of chips is lagging behind demand by about 20%. And that added capacity won't balance things until 2030. That's not great news. 2030. I mean, it's not that far off, but, you know, it's not right around the corner either. Yeah. And that's one of the SK high necks is one of the biggest chip makers for RAM specifically in the world. So they kind of know what they're talking

about. And they would have a vested interest in telling you it's coming faster, I think. Sure. Thanks to Tech Z Explore for noting this one on our subreddit. Encyclopedia Britannica has joined the ranks of those suing open AI for training on its IP without consent. More specifically, though, outputting substantially similar text. So not not a new take on a lawsuit, but now Britannica's in on it. Denon has launched its first turntable model with Bluetooth. So you can stream its high quality audio to a speaker. The DP 500 BT sells for $899. And Denon fan, I say that's expensive, but also I want it. They're pretty. Yeah, you pay for it. And they're also good. I'm not saying that. Yeah, no, it's, they're solid. They're like us pretty, but also good. Books has released a new version of its Android-based ebook reader, the Go 10.3 Lumi, which adds a front light, something it didn't have before, and also updates it to Android 15,

and it's $450. Samsung has patched it. Samsung Galaxy Connect app, and Microsoft has pushed a fix for those you might recall. Some of you lost access to the C drive, something very important to you as a result of a bug in the app. The ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals has paused a lower court order, which prohibited Plexities agents from accessing Amazon. The agents can now continue to access Amazon while their case is heard. Google is going to let free users of Gemini in the US integrate personal intelligence, which lets Gemini use what Google knows about you from other products like Gmail and Google Drive, if you allow it. And Wired has a good read called How Invisalign became the world's biggest user of 3D printers. The company that like straightens your teeth is transitioning to 3D printers to end longer, more wasteful process of making molds each time you need one. This is a very timely story because I'm considering doing

in Visalign again, which I have done once already. Bottom of teeth are getting kind of weird, but yeah, I mean, it's what a perfect use case for 3D printing. If you could just do it at the dentist too. Yeah, yeah, that's awesome. We like to end every episode of DTS with some shared perspectives. Today, Matia has a thought about why Apple made that MacBook Neo easier to repair. He thinks it has to do with their marketing to schools. That is really good point, Matia. Yeah, indeed. Indeed. I haven't been in elementary school for a while, but Macs used to be like, that's what you would have. A select few kids could access them in certain classes back in my day, but it was always Macs. Pretty much nobody had a Mac at home, were at least not in my realm. That was the classroom thing. Interesting to see how far we've come from those days, and how much Apple could really benefit from getting back into the Macs.
