ESP Could See The Eagles Drafting A QB In the Second Round

About this episode

Elliot Shorr-Parks joins Ike, Spike, and Fritz to explore a conspiracy theory about Howie Roseman's future plans for Jalen Hurts. They debate if the Eagles' front office is prioritizing a rookie contract model over committing long-term to Hurts' current massive salary. The discussion also evaluates potential draft replacements like Drew Allar and the specific physical traits Roseman values in a quarterback. 01:00 - Hockey And Hockey Takes 02:06 - Hurts Trade Conspiracy Theory 09:50 - Paying The Quarterback Price 14:35 - Talent Vs Cap Management 19:10 - Scouting Future Draft Prospects

00Girl, it's a WIP afternoon show with Ike Spike and Fritz. Stress tested our number. Now we're gonna stress test Elliott. Tuesdays with Elliott, Elliott Shore Parks at the Goldbirds podcast. Hey, Elliott. What up, how you guys doing? How you doing, Sassy E? Good, I'm excited, you know, an art time working together. I haven't really been able to drop flyers takes. So now that they're gonna be in the post season, I'm very excited. And an entire new fan base to infuriate. Yeah, my first one is they got to play more than like 18 minutes a game. Who? Oh, the players? Yeah, not dude, we're gonna play hockey. The best players are there for a third of the game. Yes. Porta Martone's 19, put them out there. Nah, I'm luck. You're out there playing hockey after two minutes are exhausted. Well, I've made it clear I could not score a goal in hockey. I know, I know. I do think it is the heart can join home, but I'm saying. Yeah. Score a touchdown, one touch push. Yes. Yeah, luck into a home run. Score, well definitely score a basket and basketball. Yes, but play a score goal. Yeah. Yes. So Elliott has not heard the conspiracy theory yet because he was in a meeting at Rob Lincoln's

01start making Academy. And that was the meeting you were in. Yeah, intentionally told him, do not tell him. I want to hear it on her. So here is the conspiracy theory. As I do enjoy conspiracy theories, is that all of these leaks, we've heard the story it's to motivate Jalen. I don't believe it's to motivate Jalen. I believe these stories are for one person and that is Jeffrey Laurie. And Jeffrey Laurie loves Jalen hurts, right? So convincing Jeffrey Laurie to move off of Jalen is going to take more than the offense not working all these sorts of things. What I believe is that how he looks at the two times he has built Super Bowl champions. Carson Wentz was on a rookie contract. Jalen hurts, it was on a rookie contract. I also think he looks around the league and sees that the team he's going to have to trade AJ Brown to is New England Patriots just in the Super Bowl quarterback on a rookie contract. Denver Broncos, AFC Championship game, quarterback on a rookie contract. Seahawks, bargain contract. Like not a super expensive one. And then you even look at the elite guys. It's been more difficult since Patrick Mahomes started getting paid big money. It's more difficult for Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen.

04And then even more, let's put those guys to the side for a second, the next group. That Jordan Love, Dak Prescott, Jalen hurts, assuming we think those teams are at a disadvantage. And I think when how he is cooking, how he is building a whole team. And I think how he is setting this up for, look, even if Jalen hurts, plays pretty good, that's even better for him because it makes the trade easier. I think he is setting up to move on after next year, unless they win the Super Bowl or anything. And I think all of this is a setup. I think how he wants to build with a quarterback on a more manageable contract than Jalen hurts. I don't think he wants to pay him again. Yeah, I think that's smart. I think that's a good conspiracy theory. I think if you look, it's possible. Yeah, I think if you look at the three main deciding voices in that building, Larry, Howie and Nick. I think they're at opposite ends of spectrum in some way. Like, I think Larry is definitely a big Jalen guy, for sure. Really likes Jalen for all the obvious reasons, right? He won him a Super Bowl, all those things. I think Nick has become a Jalen guy. I don't think, you know, he is like,

05he's my ideal quarterback, but I think Nick likes, he can win with him. And I think he does like his intangibles. I don't think Howie is a big Jalen guy. You look at the players, Howie likes. He likes star-studded guys at a, you know, like top 10 picks, five star recruits, all those things. I don't think Howie wants a quarterback that was drafted in the back end of the second round. I think Howie would prefer a quarterback that's six, five, rocket arm, elite physical traits. And I don't think that's Jalen. Now, it doesn't mean Jalen's not an elite quarterback, but I think Howie has like a talent evaluator that puts so much into like the analytics and the measurables and all that. Like, that's not the boxes at Jalen check. So I tend to agree with you, like, if they're not gonna pay him this off season, I don't know why you would pay him a year from now at way more money if you don't believe in him now. So whatever we would do, I agree. I'm sure Howie is very much into the idea of having the quarterback in 2027 be much cheaper than Jalen is. So a rookie. Well, so I don't know. I'm not locking myself into that. I think you could do a thing

05where there is Mr. Wright and Mr. Wright now. And I think if they move on for Jalen, even if there's not a rookie that they're able to get that they covet, I think that they could get a, somebody that they find good enough until they find the next guy. So, you know, I keep bringing it. It could be a rookie though. Yes, it could be a rookie. You build the defense up and you have an elite running game. That is a good situation to put a rookie into. Oh, an elite running game. Yeah. Where's that coming from? Well, I'm saying you'd have to have, I said elite defense in a run. Well, we're okay. Where's the elite running game coming from? Well, yeah, you have to have the offensive line be back at a better path. Running back or as well, right? Yeah, well, unless we still believe Saikwan is an elite running back one. Well, this could be Saikwan's last year with the Eagles too. So, I get weird. I what I'm saying is putting a rookie on a team that can run the ball and has great defense is a good setup to put him into. Yeah, when everybody's healthy, everybody's in their prime and everybody's playing at a high level. So there's less pressure on the quarterback and have to do much. When those guys are either past their prime over the hill,

07then somebody has to be able to pick up the slack. I agree. If they have a bad defense or not a great running game or the defense isn't good, it'll be tough for the rookie. Forget about the defense because it's a luxury, right? That's 10 to 10. I can't say. I'm just saying. So now we're going to go win by defense now, right? We're not winning with the offense. So it wouldn't be my perfect. So we're looking at not paying the quarterback, but the wide receivers will pay $25, $30 million a year. We'll pay offensive line and $20 million at each position and a running bag, $20 million. But we don't want to pay the quarterback. I don't think how we've used Jalen at the talent level of AJ, Devonte, Milada, Lane, and those guys. So I think he's happy to pay sake one and AJ and all them big. Do you agree with him? No, I would pay Jalen. Because I think what Jalen does in this city is taken for granted. But what I'm saying is how he specifically, I can't imagine he'd be thrilled about paying Jalen $60, $65 million a year. Well, he may not have to pay that much money.

08Well, he's making 50 now and that's the gamble the Eagles are taking. If they don't want to pay him now, and he actually does do well in this offense and they win to playoff games. What do you want to pay him, don't you? But $65 million. Why wouldn't he? Because I think it depends on how they win. Do you think you guys always tell me? No, no, we're talking about what how we think. So do you think how we think Jalen's the main reason they won the Super Bowl in 24? No, okay. So that's what I'm saying. I wasn't, but that's, but that's beside the point. That's beside the point that's one year. Right. We're talking about building the team moving forward with the essential piece being solidified. That's what we're talking about. Forget about how you won the Super Bowl in the past. We're talking about how do you build a Super Bowl team moving forward in all the parts matter. You got a 26 year old quarterback, 27 year old quarterback. You're telling me you're ready, or he is smart for him to want to move off of that guy and put an unknown guy in there with the rest of the team that's around there because he doesn't want to pay Jalen a few million dollar, a few more million dollars to solidify that.

11You got a team that's a play all team every year. You know what you're getting with this quarterback and everything else. He would much rather go find an unknown. That makes no sense. And here's the one thing I know about how he roseman. He likes for sure things. Now sometimes they get fortunate and look into some things. That just so happens. But how he's biggest moves aren't necessarily drapics. They've been free agent signings that he's went out and got that word for sure things. Already proving commodities. I did it. He's plucked the quarterback. They got fortunate with this one. Now you're telling me that they're going to go out and find another one. Yes. I think, look, we can have our opinions of this. Is there anything coming out of that building that makes you think they believe Jalen is an elite special talent? You say how he likes for sure things. Just quickly, like how we also like big swings. How he likes big swing. I don't think. Well, who's the elite special talent? If you're giving me a better option than I'm all ears. I'm all ears. You're telling me somebody out of a quarterback class that's weak in a quarterback class, that we don't know what.

11A versus some other journeyman quarterback that's been on multiple other teams. That's going to come here and all of a sudden. That's the guy that this fan base is going to be okay with you moving on from this guy with to bring in somebody else who hasn't accomplished with this guy's accomplished. So I don't think the fan base will be okay with it. I wouldn't do it. But we're talking about what how he would do. In the 2027 draft class, I went to Temple. So I'm not a big college football guy. But it is viewed as one of the best quarterback classes in a long time. You're telling me how he would rather pay a quarterback. 2027? 2027. Yeah. Is viewed as a special quarterback class. We know one quarterback Archmani, who've been telling him, he's been special since he was in the ninth grade. He looks like every other running a milk pocket quarterback. Ain't saying nothing special yet. Let me just put that out there right there with Archmani. What's the other quarterback? The quarterback from Oregon, who was supposed to be the number two pick this year, but went back because he wouldn't have been the number two pick. That guy. Yeah. We're all these other quarterbacks at that are supposed to be so special. I mean, to be fair, he drafted up from number like 19 to two

12to draft a quarterback out of North Dakota state, right? So it is about what they think of the prospect, right? And they would have to like the prospect, but you say it's only a few million dollars. Yeah. It's not more than, it's not only a few million dollars. It's like 55, 60 million dollars. And the worst game of thing is a few million dollars. No, because a rookie quarterback will cost them 12 million dollars a year. I have to look and see what the top tips are. It's more net. It's 20 something million dollars. Not as a, not as a rookie. I don't think any rookie. Well, first of all to contrast the guarantee. Right. But I'm saying you are guaranteeing Jalen probably another hundred hundred million dollars, but the cap difference would be astronomical. It would be a big one, right? And again, this is not about what I would do, but I've just never personally gotten the sense how we've used Jalen as an elite talent. I think they like what Jalen could do and you're right. I think they like that Jalen is dependable and he can handle the market and everything. But I also think if they have a chance to acquire a special quarterback in the draft, they would jump at it. You know, I'm bad you'd have to be to get that. I mean, there are 23 now, where did they go from Carson? Where did they start at? Nineteen? Just so we know the number one pick will get a contract

13at about 10 million dollars a year to start. So that's a little higher than I thought. But it still is a big difference between 65, 65 million dollars or whatever, right? I just think that if you look at the player's how he pays. If you, even the Jalen thing, put him in a bit of a tough spot. He had to pay Jalen right off of 2022. Jalen in 2021, right? He, he was here, 2020, 2021 to 2022. And he had his breakout year in his contract here, right? So I think they paid Jalen at an unadventaged time for the franchise. And I think that if, especially with everything coming out of the building, they would be interested in finding a quarterback that how we probably views as more of an elite raw talent than Jalen. Yeah, what I'm saying is, first of all, I've never said Jalen wasn't an elite talent. I, that's flawed for people who think that. I'll never say that. I think he's an elite quarterback. So it's not about him being an elite talent. When I'm saying this, there are elite talented quarterbacks out there that are making that money who have an accomplished what he's accomplished. I agree with you. So I, so I, so my, my thing is,

13is this just about saving money or do you want to have the best players on your team? I think it's about from how he's perspective, it would be paying a player more than how he thinks he is worth. If you're paying Jalen 60, 55 million a year, whatever it is, that's what I think it would be about. Can we get a rookie on a rookie deal that we think has a higher upside than Jalen on a much cheaper deal or are we recommitting ourselves to three more years of Jalen? And that's where I think how we might, might bulk at it. Now, to your point, Spike, I think Jeffrey would be into it because Jalen has won him a Super Bowl. Jalen does win him games. Jalen does represent the franchise in a way better than maybe any quarterback will for the Eagles. But how he, I think, doesn't view Jalen as an elite talent. Yeah, you keep saying that. I don't know who does, do you mean as an elite talent? I don't think anybody does. Who said he's an elite talent? Well, because we're talking about going up and getting a quarterback that they really do. I want to back so I can go down the list of guys that get paid that aren't elite talent. It would be a risk, but I'm saying the Eagles in this situation would have to evaluate a quarterback in the draft.

14They view as having higher upside than Jalen. That's where they would go get a quarterback. Yeah, I just think it would be a mistake. It might be. And I tend to be on your side. And I don't think that they would put their, how he's also big on his reputation and what's attached to his name. And you're moving on from somebody that's a known commodity that if he plays well, this, it's seemingly for financial reasons. But imagine financial reasons. Now, he doesn't play what that's one thing, but you're telling me this sounds like you're saying money is the motivating factor here that I want to pay him cheaper. No team says that in favor of a running back, a defensive end, a quarterback, or any other position on the team. No team says that about their quarterback position. Well, but they do say it about running backs. Well, that's not the quarterback. I know, but I think there was a point at which the quarterback position, at least in the game at this moment, has become the quarterback salaries are overvalued compared to what's been overvalued.

16But it is in a place. But all those players that you name that are, that you name that you said are getting paid that aren't elite level talents, those teams are not winning. Those teams are not winning. They said people say they are elite level talent and they still aren't winning. Well, but my point would be where I'm winning Superbowls. Yes, but I just think everything that comes out of that building does not paint the picture of people in that building, viewing Jalen as a special quarterback, right? We can all of our opinions. It seems pretty clear. So you're saying like, what would they have without him being special? I think he was special on a really great 24. Like I don't want a rookie contract. No, no, he wasn't on a 24. He was on his big deal. 22, they got there on a rookie contract. Well, but 24, I don't even think the money had started yet. We can look to see because he was, he was still on his, he's a free age of four year guy. Cause spikes point, his cap hit was probably small in 24 because the way they structured the deal, but he, but he was on his, yes, that's all I said. Yes, it was already past four years. But the big contract had not, in my,

17just the way that I'm painting this, his big contract had not made team building prohibitive the same way it is now. Right. That is the point. To spikes original point, though, I do think the barrier or the block between them moving on from Jalen and not is Jeffrey. I don't think Jalen salary is prohibiting them from doing anything financially. I would agree with you. I don't think his salary is doing it to prohibit him doing anything. Cause cap hit is low. But it's more about, do they want to give him another 110 million in guaranteed money? That is what it comes down to. Right. Okay. And that's fine. And I'm saying if he goes out and owns it, look, if he, if he plays elite this year and he looks like a different player and he's, then yes, that's what we're talking about. Right. But I'm saying, like, if he is mostly the same guy, I don't think they will want to give him that type of money. I would agree with that. I would agree with you. And then even if he's elite though, right, you're still talking about giving a player a ton of money where they might be able to look and say, it's a risk to your point, but we can get someone younger and cheaper. And apparently someone they, like they maybe might not have the issues with that they seem to a Jalen, where you are saving a ton of money and you're moving forward.

19And to your thing about how he's reputation, I agree with you. But I would also say how we might love the idea of being the GM, the first GM that's smart enough to move off a massive contract for a rookie and to keep it moving in terms of keep winning. Like that could also be something how he might like. It's a dangerous game. We're playing. It's a risk. I agree. It's a dangerous game. I'm saying it's fair. They just care about winning football games, man, all this who's the smartest in the room, man. Now we're, we're, we're projecting he's going to be this and this is the conspiracy theory. I'm planning for another guy I'm ready. I'm planning. That's what this guy can fail. I can move on from him. Like what are we doing here? That's what we're doing as a football team. So I agree. But what are we talking about here? I think we have to consider too, though, is like I think that Jeffrey is a great owner, right? Jeffrey Laurie is on board with this, allowing this, the way they tell they balls, they're balls who thinks they should go out and win a championship this year that we're planning to lose so we can get rid of this guy. No, no, no. That is what I think these leaks are doing are trying to show Jeffrey that there is a

23different side of Jalen. So when the team only said, I don't think I'll get Jeffrey Laurie enough credit for knowing that. Well, I was going to say I miss Jeffrey. And no one was going on in that building. Yeah. My guess exactly what's going on. He's probably real quick. He's probably closer to Jalen than a lot of them are, meaning that they, they've had more dinners and intimate meetings and, and, and things that nature probably didn't Jalen has had with anybody else in that building. Yeah. I think Jeffrey's very informed of what's going on. But to your points, Mike, I do think that the issues raised in those articles are probably not issues Jeffrey cares about as much as how he and Nick do because it's like day-to-day problems. And I think it highlights them on a broad scale. Yes. Well, we'll see. What happens? Elliot. You, well, I was going to move on to the next one. Well, the, the one thing I would say to sense, you know, we're in draft mode to an extent. An interesting part about them drafting a quarterback early, if they do it, and I don't think they'll do it in the first round, but let's say they do it in the second round. Yeah. When you say early, do you mean first or second or do you mean first, second, third?

24I do not think they will take a quarterback in the first round. So you're talking about top two rounds, not top three. Top two, yeah. Yeah. I don't think the third round is a bit of a grayer, but I don't think someone you have to, if they draft quarterback in the second round, my guess is he starts this year. I don't think they would, at some point, you mean, yeah, I don't think they would sit because the, the thing that happened with Jalen, which was unfortunate for a degree to the franchises, he had two years of developing on a rookie deal, and they got one year of him being an elite quarterback on his rookie deal. I think if they draft someone, and I'll use Tyson Simpson, because he seems like the guy that might be at, like they'll want to get him on the field, I think, if they draft him in the second, like get him to develop, they draft him in the second round. They were already showing that the right is on the wall. Exactly. Yeah. When you draft the quarterback in the second round, yeah. If you take the quarterback in the second round, he becomes the most important person in the building from a player perspective. He does. Can you imagine? A franchise quarterback. What do you think the chances are that they would do that? It's like, I mean, I wouldn't do it. I'm not asking you to do that. I know, I know, but I'm saying, I think we'd be, we would be ignorant to say it's zero.

26Zero, right. Yeah. Look at everything coming out of there. Like 18%? 20%. The tough thing is, is who is it, right? Because there's Tyson Simpson, who looks could go like end of first, beginning of second. Maybe he makes it to 53, or 54, and these are all just smoke screens, so get drafted high. The guy I think that they would be in on, Drew Aller out of Penn State. He's six five. He was a high recruit. He was a number one quarterback in his draft class. He has a strong arm. He's mobile. Like, that's the guy I could picture them falling in love with. Penn State quarterback. I agree. I'm just saying, I don't think they'd take him a leg in the third round. I mean, we all seem Drew Aller, I have to see things special. I see things special. I see things special. He's just Hackenberg. I haven't done my, I haven't done my YouTube stuff yet. Jack, have you, in all seriousness, have you watched him? I've watched him enough. I'm surprised he doesn't, he reminded me of Josh Allen. I'm surprised you weren't there. Yeah, if you squint, you got to really squint. Well, I mean, he's, he's six five with a rocket arm and can move.

27Like, I don't know. He's when you salivate over, but if you watch him, he's a total loser. You got to get Garrett Nutsmire. No, I'm out on Nutsmire. Yeah, dude, big game. You can't make it. Oh, man, that's Mac Jones. I can't, I can't wait. I can't wait to start doing my YouTube stuff. There's no style. No, Garrett Nutsmire. Probably not. What? It's a tough name. It is tough, man. It is. It is new smart. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I don't care. I didn't know. Yeah, and they got Tyler Shoewa, whatever the hell is name, whatever. And New Orleans, they're not going to draft him. No, he's bringing him here. There you go. They can't, they can't take a quarterback. They can't run. 888729. Why not? 94 in skill. All right. No, it's not physically. No, it's not. No, it's not. year with jalen he stopped running in the whole offense felt like you don't hold on hold on that that that he doesn't suck it though i don't know who the who the second that i think the top three offenses in the NFL last year in terms of points per game were the rams the bills and they uh... and the yorks
