Episode 212 - Consider it PURE JOY

0:00All right, everybody. Howdy and welcome back to another episode of the painted arrow podcast. I have Travis Osborne to my left. Yep. And I'm on your right. You are, yeah, that's how that works. And we're in this new studio that it still isn't like, it doesn't feel normal quite yet. Yeah, are you there? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, no, I'm right about the same where it's, we're still. I think, I think also to a certain extent, we're still working on this space, which is kind of fun. I mean, there's, yeah, we've been filming this, this series for our YouTube channel that we plugged in the last episode. We talked about it briefly, but basically it's a building the brand series. And that's like, it's, it's not out yet. Nope, it's not out, but we're like making it. Yeah, we just shot the, the, the pilot episode for that this last Friday.

1:03And it's, it's gonna be a lot of work, but it's also, I think it's gonna be so worth it. So we get to the whole point of this thing was kind of, as we're growing our, specifically our YouTube social media, we're trying to create a good base kind of a foundation for who painted arrow is, who Nate and Dev are, and part of that is, you know, telling the story of painted arrow and of Nate and Dev in a way that we've never been able to before in terms of like depth and a lot of archival footage and getting into some of like the nitty gritty of the decisions that have been made and some of the, you know, the historical stories of like, yeah, and this is kind of, this is what happened and this is how this played out. And we've never been able to do that. We've done, back when we were in the pull barn, we did a very small, I think, what would that video turn out to be like, maybe five minutes? Yeah. A video that was sitting down in those series. Yeah, a little interview, which is great for what it's for,

2:03and we actually have that up on our website, just kind of telling the story of painted arrow, but in a really quick kind of nitty gritty, this is what you need to know way. And this is our opportunity to really kind of like, sit in it, allow people to know who we are. And if I may interject, the thing that, the thing that's interesting about telling a story, is it's not done. No, not even close. We were talking about that at the end. We were like, we're gonna have to do another one of these at like less than a year. Yeah. So it's like, we feel like now's the time. We've grown our brand, we've grown our dealer network, we've grown our online presence, our social media presence to the point where we feel like it deserves like, a lot of people don't really know how it started. Yeah. That's the reason for it. And it is, it's so interesting. We did on, it was on Friday, we went and literally rehashed.

3:07Like, truly, yeah, drove to every location that painted arrows been based out of, essentially. It truly rehashed the inception story by physically driving there and telling the story. That's a little bit of a sneak peak tease, I guess. That's good. Yeah. But like, it was for me, like, I was exhausted that day. Oh, man. Like, we got back home and I was done. That was my birthday, actually. So my wife had a dinner planned and like, I went to dinner with her and she's like, you know, what'd you do today? You know, like that? Start the conversation. I was today, honey, you know? And it was like, it was like an emotionally draining day for some reason. It was a lot of driving and a lot of, you guys having to be basically, I don't, so as you're, you're a media traffic guy, I know some of what happened with painted arrow, but a lot of it, you know, I wasn't there. I've only been here for what three, coming on three years now.

4:08And so like, for a lot of, like, the inception and inception of the story and a lot of the places where we're going, I had no background for, like, except for the stories that you guys have told me over the years. Yeah. And so it really was kind of, I told you guys beforehand. I was like, I can plan this to a certain extent, but the rest of it, like, you guys are going to have to be in your, your head and thoughts, yeah. Thinking about, okay, what happened at this location? Give me some of the, you know, the, I kept calling it color throughout the day of, like, give me some of the color, like, paint this for me. Like, give me some of, you know, the humor that happened here, some of the questions that you guys were thinking. So you really did, you guys had to both lock in and, and to your, your credit, you did. And we only had to, what, reshoot like maybe two times because I was like, you guys look tired. Yeah, you're like, oh, fine. And like, all right, let's do this thing. Yeah. It was just, I don't know. It was good for me to do that. And it was, it was a reminder of all of the challenges and obstacles and the things that, again, it was before,

5:08it was before you, a lot of that grinding phase. We're still grinding, but like, truly trying to get this thing to be something, to be something that could actually support anyone. Yeah. Yeah. It was just so unconventional. Mm-hmm. Like, the story is, I'm expected as well. Yeah, but like, the story is so, like, you can't write it. Like, it is, it is exactly what it is because that's what was needed at the time. And we did the next best thing that we thought was, you know, the right move. It's just crazy, man, rehashing that all, getting ready for this episode to, you know, really, this whole series, sorry, to launch, has been forcing me to, like, think, you're saying you're challenging us to, like, think back and think about all those, like, those times that were difficult. And I brought, I'm gonna relate this into. Yeah, I want you to. To the Bible here. I love that. Everything should relate to the Bible. We're trying to, we're obviously gonna continue to keep this podcast live forever. Like, that's, that's, that's a given.

6:11Yeah. But like, sometimes we have a really good juicy guest lined up and they're coming in and it's like a thing, but like, I'm, I'm pushing to, to kind of do more of these, like, call them like a caffeine lipper. Call them like a caffeine lipper. Like, some, did you, can you explain what that is? Because I could already see my mom listen to this and not having any idea what you're talking about. We'll see, Judy, your son buys these tins. Oh, he's gonna throw me right out there. Your son buys these tins of caffeine. Yeah. So mom, it looks like a dip. My caffeine. It's like, if you've ever, if you've ever seen people throwing little nic, nic teen pouches into their, their lip, almost like a, tobacco pouch, this is the same thing, but for just caffeine. It's just coffee. I'm just, I'm just doing some caffeine. I mean, I'm only slightly addicted to it. This is a total side tangent here. I have a good friend named Chad.

7:11He's been on the podcast. Chad Snyder. Oh, Chad Snyder, yeah. He doesn't listen to this that I know of, but he's a pharmacist. And he talks about caffeine like it's a drug. It is. It's like hilarious because like, he's an intellectual. And so you talk about caffeine versus nicotine versus whatever. He categorizes this cup right here as a drug. 100%. It's 100% a drug. It's interesting. You can't get away from it. It's 100% a drug. That's a little side tangent. Yeah. But anyway, Judy, that's what we're, so this is, I think what Nate's trying to say. Let me, let me, let me cap it all. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, it's, oh, it's translate for, for Hicks talk there. I think what Nate's trying to say is this is our little, our little pick me up, our Monday morning pick me up. Just supposed to be a little small thing. It's not going to be like super in-depth episodes on these Monday mornings. It's just going to be us touching on some of the things that we're thinking about, but then also most importantly, touching on the word and getting our week started off right.

8:14And maybe that helps you start off your week right too. Bingo. Bingo, bingo, bingo. It's a camping liver, yeah. We're both sick, too, by the way. Spending a year, man. Yeah, if you're here, if you're here in our, our sinuses being clogged, you're here and I'm right. Go ahead. So we talked about this again in the last episode. We talked about the book of James. Yeah. And it's just like one of those books that's like, it's like super straightforward. It's in layman's terms. You can, you can start reading it. And it's like, you're not, you're not wondering like what they're talking about. Yeah, it's not very, there's no cryptic talk here. He's pretty straightforward, yeah. And so I, this is, this is, it's like the first, it's the first words in James, but it's like my, of my favorite. There's like four or five things in the Bible that like I can just stick out to me. This is like in the top. It's like the weather circle.

9:15It's up there. And I love it. And because it, it, you can apply it. You can apply it. You do love practical things, yeah. You can apply it. But there's nothing else that Nate is. It's practical. But again, I'm tying this into like our, as we're, it really like shine bright when we were doing this recap of how, how painted air started. The Inception store were filming on Friday. And I'm gonna read it right now. It's titled Trials and Temptations. Consider it pure joy. My brothers and sisters, when you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. If you let perseverance finish its work, you may be made mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault. And it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea,

10:16blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. Yeah. I'm gonna just, I'm gonna point out the thing that I always point out to people. Yeah, I love this. I go for it. I preach to my, my kid. I preach to my, my family. I use this like a lot as like a tongue and cheek. Like consider it pure joy. Yeah. But like literally that first line, consider it pure joy. If you're listening, picture like the perfect joyful evening, whatever that is. Like a pure joy. Maybe you're sitting on the beach with your family and your kids are playing in the sand or maybe you're having dinner with your mom or your dad and your brother and your sister. And everybody's there and everybody's happy and it's joyful and there's music playing. It's just a joyful moment. The most joyful thing you can picture, picture it. Whatever that is, it's this is saying consider it pure joy

11:21when you face trials. Think about that one. Yeah. Yeah, I had this, there's a sermon that I was listening to. I think it might have been a podcast. It was, yeah, it was. It was on actually on our theology of suffering as Christians and how we don't do great at that at realizing or being able to understand suffering as part of our Christian walk and part of our getting closer to Christ. Usually we see suffering as we've done something wrong and now we're paying for something. Like we have that old school thought of like suffering equals I'm being punished when the reality of it is and then they said this in this podcast and it kind of blew my mind a little bit. They're like, if we say that we wanna be like Christ and I think that you and I would both say that we wanna be like Christ. That's like one of our main goals in life is actually the main goal in life.

12:22We wanna be more like Christ. We wanna be Christ followers to the greatest extent. Suffering is a sharing in what Christ was and what he suffered here on earth. And if we wanna be like him, a lot of his experience was informed by son of suffering. Like that was one of his titles. And to think that we can be like Christ and bypass all the suffering is to think that somehow we can be better than Christ and bypass all that and just be like Christ without any lessons being learned. And we've talked about this a lot like and Devon's usually one that likes to bring this one up is like when we talk about our kids, right? We all three of us have sons. Devon has said this before and it's stuck with me. He said if you were in charge of making your son strong and a good man, would you give him only easy tasks

13:22or would you give him hard tasks? And it's like obviously you give him hard tasks because you want them to be strong, you want them to have perseverance, you want them to have all those intangibles that make a man a good man. You wouldn't just give him easy stuff because then they would end up being something they had soft, yeah, exactly. So if we can do that and see that within our own sons as humans, as imperfect humans, how much more would the father choose to give us hard things so that we trust in him and that he can create and craft and mold strong men that are actually warriors for him. And it's like, so I think it all comes down. What James is saying here is it's a perspective thing, right? That's right. It's a perspective thing. You can choose and you're like one of the best examples of this actually. You're like one of the best examples of this. Devin, I also talk about this. Whenever Nate had something that's hard in his life, which is frankly recently been a lot

14:23of just stressful things happening, right? Like big life things. Yeah, life life has not been super easy for any of us. Whenever Nate runs up against a brick wall, he just starts like, haptalking himself. If you'll see Nate just start like, nope, this is great. Let's do it. Come on. I want more. Let's do it. And he like starts like just like ramp you up like, yes, come on, let's do it. And you know that Nate is speaking into himself truth and he does it for us as well as like as a company. Where when we hit something, he's like, yeah, come on. Give us more. We got this and it's like just a small microcosm example of like, hey, we're going to embrace this because we know that we're going to come out the other side as stronger men, as a stronger company. And if we choose to actually give it to the Lord, we're going to be stronger Christians. It's interesting to like, I know I'm not the only one. I know I'm not the only one when I say this,

15:26but like, it's almost like a, it's like, I've approached life now like of course that was going to happen. Like you go get your truck fixed, you're on the way home, the light comes back on. Yeah, of course, right? You know, I just did all this work to whatever and it like just undid itself like like that. Yeah, you fill in the blank. Yeah. Like that is life. It literally is like, I'm not any different than the person right down the road. Yeah, be assured that in this life, you have like any of trials and troubles here. It's like, it's like of course. Yeah. You know, and I think the mindset, it's a big part of it. But like to this point, if you can understand that you're not the only one. It's a perspective thing and it's like, it's part of how you're being crafted. Yeah. Like think about it like a piece of steel being honed.

16:27Mm-hmm, right? Or gold being purified. Gold being purified or clay being molded or whatever. Like you're being made just absolutely rock hard. Yeah. That's part of the process. Yeah. You can't get there any other way. And if to your point, like if you were to say, hey, make me the hardest man ever, you'd be put through the hardest stuff. The hardest stuff. You wouldn't be said, hey, go walk through the garden and pick some roses and come back and make me a bouquet. No, it'd be, walk through the shadow. Yeah. And learn how to trust God even within the shadow. I think that there's another, one of my pastors over radiant pastor Jeff said this. He was, he's like a deep theologian. And he was like, hey, in the New Testament, when they talk about trials and tribulations, trials and temptations, he's like the Greek word for trial and temptation is exactly the same. Yeah. He said, it's the context that makes it different

17:29within whether it becomes, you know, translated as trial or temptation. He's like all that to say anything that you go through, any temptation that you go through, you can either look at it as I am being tempted and oh no, I'm being tempted, I'm gonna fail. I'm gonna, or you can look at it as what the Lord is giving you an opportunity, which is could be a trial. A trial has a purpose off the back end of it. Like if I'm going through a trial, that means that there's something that I'm learning through this, a temptation has a failure on the back end of it. And he's like, look at everything that comes your way and go, I have the opportunity to give God the glory through this temptation, I have the opportunity to give God the glory through this trial. I can grow or I can fail and take myself right back to where I was. It's like with everything that we go through in life, we have, it's that perspective thing. We have the option to either take this and go,

18:29okay, Lord, grow me through, find me, yeah. Or we have the option to go, oh, this is too much and just stay where we're at. And I don't want to just stay where I'm at. We're gonna go through hard things regardless, right? Like you said, there's no escaping it. This is universal. Like hard times are universal. I want to grow through my hard times. I don't want to just say stagnant and get stuck in my hard times. Yep. I want to have it be joy. To tie this into to the end of this, the part that I read, it says, if any of you likes wisdom, you should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe in not doubt because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea blowing and toss by the wind. How many times? I'm speaking for myself. But like how many times have you asked for something and all of a sudden you get what you're asking for? But the way that you're getting it is through that lesson. Yeah. What the heck? You're like, why am I going through this? And then like, oh, I did want to actually become efficient

19:31at X, Y and Z, but I'm only going to become efficient of that if I have to go through this trial. Yeah. Yeah, it's like, it's like the cliché that the thing that pastors always say, like if you pray for patience, he's going to give you opportunities to be patient and those are always hard opportunities. You're like, ah, it is 100% that where you're like, why? And then you realize like, oh, this is actually part of the process. This is a large provision, man. Yeah. So I don't know. I, all that came to mind, the trials, the temptations, the perspective, when we were recapping our story and like all the things that got us to where we are now, I'm, man, I didn't come easy. I'm thankful for them, all those lessons that we've learned and life and I just, I'm excited to bring that series to you guys. I'm also excited to continue to do more of these episodes where we're just like, trying to cut through the BS, you know, and just, I mean, everybody's got,

20:31everybody's doing the same thing. And don't free one second kid yourself to think that somebody's got it figured out. No, the grass is never greener on the other side. Like all dudes, all ladies, all people, we all have the same issues, man. It's a human condition, baby. It's like, oh, I used to, I used to convince myself that like, you know, I'm going social media and you see somebody's family. It's like that person you follow's wife and they got a gorgeous family and they got money. You think that there's just like, they're just living it. They got the same problem. They've got the same problems that sometimes even to a greater degree. It's, yeah. Amen. Yeah. And it's more money, more problems is the truth. Yeah. More money, more problems, but also just like, man, it is, it's a human condition. It's right there in the scripture where it says, be sure that in this world you will have trials and tribulations. Like, be sure this is universal. This is going to happen in fact, it's even to an extent more guaranteed for the followers of Christ.

21:32Like that people will hate you because of my name. Like that is all a guarantee. And I do think that there's, some of that is like a blessing in disguise because I think it's those things that tie us back to the fact that we cannot provide for ourselves. It's right. The only provision going forward is to lean on the Lord, man. Yeah. It's the only way that you're going to make it through this thing. Excuse me. Um, you want to wrap us up on a quick prayer? And then I'm going to give a couple updates and then that's it. Love it. All right. Hey, God, it's good to be in your presence this morning. And we just thank you for, for Painted Arrow. This has been such a cool thing to be a part of. There's been a very obvious movement of your hand on this company, on the people within it. And God, I pray that we would be faithful to the gift that you've given us that we would continue to keep this your presence, your, your purpose as the front runner of this entire company.

22:34It's like we, we say it a lot. It's not about the products that we're selling. It's about the lives that we encounter. And so God, I pray that this podcast would be just part of the tool set that you've given us to accomplish your will that there would be people on the other side of this audio that are listening and being encouraged in that in a small way, we'd be your hands and feet Lord in that. And so I pray for this week going forward, not only for Nate and I, but also for anyone who's listening to this, God, that you would be glorified in all things that we'd be willing to trust you, even when times are hard, because that is, like we said, universal God. And I pray that in those moments, even more so, we would lean into you and go, God, I don't understand what's going on, but you do, and that we'd have faith for that.
