About this episode
We can’t have nice things. After a performance for the ages, a weird game in weird circumstances ends in a weird defeat. Archie is joined by Chris, Mark and special guest Sam Roberts to review the batshittery.
A line-up that was hard to place positionally (more on that later) and a deflected early goal set the tone for a frustrating afternoon. Reshuffled players in a reshuffled shape, predictably disjointed. Terrible sentence, but actually exactly how it felt. A change at half-time and a constant rotation in search of a lucky break, which almost came. A penalty that wasn’t, a decent chance, a late, late goal disallowed. For once, some sympathy with the ‘one of those days’ merchants. A point would have been more than fair.
Part 2 quickly revisits the midweek cup exit to Luton, which sowed the seed of the major theme, a catastrophic series of first-team injuries. Training, recovery, selection and signings all seem to be playing a role in limiting success on the field. Is the season all but over? Or is a bumper run of games against mid-table teams giving some room for optimism? And it’s episode 200. What a ride it has been.
Downwards.

2:12hello and welcome back to the filmers podcast actually here in johnny me today is mark level Chris Alan and Sam Roberts it's back down to earth with a bump last week's pod was uh you are it on one of the ages if you will that thumping five to victory uh make way to begin I guess with the starting line up which saw not one but nine senior players not making the matchday squad through injury it that's uh that's quite state isn't it to be in yeah don't do the bare bones I mean yeah the web rumours before kick off about hazard being injured um good that uh plaggy came back for 45 minutes before getting injured again unfortunately
3:19um yeah uh it's not great is it not great no it's not so so Sam you've got Edwards in midfield like Mark said a plaggy return who knows of his fully fit or what his situation is there actually having back and gold it's at teagin fin in fairness to the guy who scored in the week but for him to be starting that usual kind of suggest that we are down to the bare bones it's it's not it's not good is it it's not good that amount of injuries not good at all um the teagin fin thing I think is particularly depressing he seems to go off either injured or particularly disheartened uh as well so again you know you can't be putting as much expectation on the player of that age you know he's he's obviously very very new very young he's he's coming through to to have to kind of rely on players like that at the at the sort of um uh detriment of players like Amici who surely should be kind of coming into this into the team as senior pros to me sort of suggest there are some serious issues with that recruitment I know we've talked about it
4:21before once you're past that first 11 it just feels like there's so much weakness in the squad and the performance they really just demonstrates that it's hard to believe that we were watching performances like the one against late Norian and the one against Cardiff less than a fortnight ago and you know the same the same team is putting out stuff like today it's it's unbelievable doesn't look good and I will just say Ashby Hammond I don't think was uh the problem today for for once I think he actually did a relatively good uh 90 minutes I don't I don't think he was at fault for the goal necessarily although others may disagree but um but you know I as you say terrible terrible injuries and and a really really lackluster performance which surely a squad of that size should be able to raise themselves even in spite of the the injuries um so if I just read them out just for the listeners sake and our sake as well to be honest so Kane rules and Galloway we knew before before Cardiff right but in the last week to my mind we've had Dale Ibrahim we're a do Ross hazard and to lie which is uh that's a spine has a spine and a half and it's more than a spine
5:27actually play us about you could start at 11 but it's not like it yeah well I mean I hadn't got a yet but yes it gets worse now then it's it is absolutely you started with nine out probably by the sense of it finishing with 11 injuries and with that 11 is a bit table seen uh minimum in this league so yeah I mean there is the part of me is how's it gone from last week to this week apart me is well that's how well I just didn't allow obsessed with it I know but you know Edwards is a hero I mean he actually had quite a good game today you know did what he was asked to do but when you when you're on you know your club captain left back have a good play in that position because you've got three if not four players we play there out I'll actually come to the point where I've got seven sympathy for the manager but he seems to be picking the wrong fights after the game that's another conversation yeah so I would agree regarding sympathy but let's park and come back to it um because I think there's something in that I Chris that for the rather
6:31on goal seven for a minute uh your thoughts just they get it doesn't what it doesn't rain but it pours right oh one goal wasn't it like raise the be good header raise the be good shot and actually it was a sort of intended deflection it on the first look at it you thought oh they've got lucky but he actually did read aren't it that kind of happens and this sort of agreed with the comms in some ways it's gonna happen it's better I happen then than with six minutes to go right you've still got the whole game ahead of you but it just set the tone it was just the whole game was like not in a good way was like watching park football you know I mean they were a bit shabby we had half a team like if you were with your mates in a park after ten minutes you'd be like actually saw it that's going like it's no one's really in this tonight like you're a bit no of it sheer we're a bit broken let's not but I I'm fully fit I did watch it but I was more distracted than ever so whatever
7:37I could do it we wouldn't great if we lose don't really care this is just a very strange afternoon it felt like the last game of the season bit much hmm yeah they yeah they started the game 23rd in the table they probably didn't deserve to win but neither did we a few months ago as well so yeah I mean the draw would have been a fair result for me but yeah I don't like the phrase they wanted it more I think we we huffed and puffed we had a few chances but it had you know had the look of that sort of day from an early early juncture and obviously on the back of that virtue defeat as well whereas you know I mean we would have hoped there were two games from
8:37Wembley you know and we can say yeah it's a Mickey Mouse thing it's Mickey Mouse but losing tola as well you know who's become you know he's our best player and our biggest asset losing him on on the eve of that game it's just another you know just a massive ball like and compounded with today the only good thing about it I'll wrap up only good thing about we're still only six points from the playoffs only six points because there's other dross there pudders field lost again we're we're still in the mix we just got to win every home game and see where we end up so that's my positivity and I will button with more bits of positivity when I feel like it very good I'm sure Chris appreciated that virtue loving sam is there anything you want to touch on the government before I move on again just a really low quality piece of a low quality match I mean to Chris's point it
9:42was really dross it was it was a poorly low quality I think both teams were terrible I'd also say it's interesting to see the way we play against Cardiff who I would argue actually put out a very sort of you know considered system something that was kind of you know obviously is running away with the league this year and the way we're able to kind of react to a quality team playing you know tempting quality football seems to completely fall apart I mean admittedly there are lots of injuries the squatters is is really has been rocked but you know the quality was on the floor I thought I felt that argol really struggled playing against the team that was also you know I basically just a dross you know low quality outfit seems to struggle a lot more than they do against teams that actually try to put together a decent performance we talked about Blackpool the other week I think also you know I was at late in game the other week it felt like there was a lot more that planets could do argol could do against teams that are trying to to impress and the mentality of the argol squad at this point just feels like it is absolutely you know raise a thin I guess like there is there is no you know get up and go or show dragging ourselves out of a difficult game
10:43like that once we were one kneel down it just felt like that was going to be the way it was and that's how it transpired Sam the response if you're if you're into your kind of fought more momentum charts suggest there was one in the kind of the any middle third of that first half a flurry of chances perhaps flurry of chances sure there was the the chance from pack all that went just over there was you know a number of kind of breakaways but but it never looked like a serious a serious chance I I have to say that the were rather undefended so deep as well like it was very very difficult to get behind that back line obviously the momentum chart show one thing but you know I sat through that 90 minutes and I've got to say like I didn't see any any clear cut any clear cut real chances there was the penalty shout you know again that's a tricky one for me it looked like came up a defender so you know how is how is papal offside in that position he was then fouled in the box but you know the referee decided very quickly that wasn't the case so there were there are flourishes but it never felt like there was a serious chance that we were going to get through and and get that equalizer again others may disagree but that that's certainly having having sat through
11:46that's the only what I felt yeah you'll get to that 50% of the ball if you look at it you know our top mobs and we always struggle we've got 50% ball don't need like that's why we look better against Cardiff because we had to space and they were trying to do stuff I mean what I will say they they were brilliant at tactical fails today that was a that was a masterclass in how to stop a team playing um any time anybody had the room they were called they were you know if you're them you're like that's exactly what we need to be doing in our position of the league scoring early government then just absolutely shit house um but yeah there is a disconnection I was I play really close to Etchins the first half and it didn't look like we were as dominant as that chart makes us look that's all and it was kind it it was just a series of like half child season scuff balls over just there was no real substance to it and actually if anything they look more threatening
12:47like it when they had a chance those were slightly better than ours um well I've got a certain that sympathy like to Mark's point in the week you know I'd like two players who were picked that didn't even make it onto the field two more today it's gonna be that isn't it it's like we start it's like the first game is I've been like the last game of the season or the first game of the season in you guys there's another bunch of people that barely played together some of them carry injuries just yeah I've sort of tried not to get too bothered about it it was with it what it looked like what it was it looked like a thread together team against a crappy team and the crappy team just about didn't know um Mark there was certainly the what Chris is saying there's almost callbacks to the beginning of the season right when it was so perilous um if you will that throwing together team not quite knowing what to do and so on every game felt like a a new invention or if you a new starting excite for sure Ashby Hammond talking about throwback
13:52to the start of the season Ashby Hammond he actually pulled off quite a decent save what do you think no it's tremendous the double save and uh you know this could like he's had to play today it doesn't say much for um Zach Baker really um I mean as a goalkeeper I would like to have seen him get a chance but credit to Ashby Hammond yeah the goal was a deflection so it's it maybe look like he should have maybe got closer to it but it's it's a tough one double save everyone will remember that tremendous double save that he made in the to keep the score line at one nil um so yeah let's give him some credit today um yeah 10 minutes before the halftime right Mark yeah I mean kept us in the game and it goes too new I don't you know you know that was that would have been it I reckon but it's not looking like as you are girl keeps like even the free kick that you stopped you did well
14:56if it wasn't like the great save but there are ones that can get away from your right sort of swirl the in and bounce right in front of the beer they look very if that I could eat really didn't do a lot wrong to like you if you were watching that team for the first time you wouldn't say that all keep us a crown oh probably he was he don't get good yeah not we need him to be good no because I added so again so um yes basically the most important position on the pitch that's why I said at the start of the season that we needed to strengthen no there you go Sam I got written down here tactical hot a tactical reshuffle at half time flaky with drawn I'm not sure if there was an injury there yet to kind of hear anything clarifying the matter that McKenzie's brought on harding Edwards Watson sonola kind of shifted around a bit how did you see that oh yeah again it was kind of rough I thought I thought you know plaggy looks very rusty indeed I have to say like first half I don't again the moments he was
16:00involved in the game he didn't look up on play he didn't look like he was handling the physicality particularly of non-bay who I think was the striker that we saw rather in last time he played them actually about two years ago just again like you know head on a stick type striker you know strong powerful but you know really struggled with that I have to say good to see Jack McKenzie coming coming into the team like he seems to be another one this season that we've not seen hardly any of and was brought in in the closed season as a sort of like a quite a big signing actually and someone that was going to be kind of you know someone that would be trying you know pushing to for a first team position I thought he did very well second half I thought you know really really tried to kind of get keep things rolling at the left back position I thought the reshuffle defense weren't troubled hugely there were a number of kind of breakaways towards the end when we were pushing for that equalizer but I don't think that was a particular problem I have to say I thought Soranola's delivery was poor almost throughout the entire game like there were quite a few chances where he'd be whipping balls in that we're just getting easily picked away that the weren't you know again just not adding any sort of quality to that kind of final final push for that goal but you know in terms of the actual tactical
17:02reshuffle didn't didn't seem to be a big problem the bigger tactical issue I think was going from the 442 that we've seen over the recent weeks to obviously by necessity having to go with more of a I guess a 4451 type set up because we had pebble kind of up top with I guess you know what's playing just off him and that is not I don't think that works and I don't think we've seen that work at all this season really and that again is another issue for us in terms of trying to break down those defenses against teams that will just sit deep yeah what I want to say about something so the earlier arch about being like the first early bit the season there was some similarities in the chaos but it the changes felt like the liberate chaos and we ended up with like nearly 20 shots so the game will be like one or two so it wasn't as bleak as those cleanest ones it was just it almost felt like we'll get it 10 minutes move that person swap them over they're bringing people off like it felt desperate and the jitter would be desperate whereas earlier in the season it was we should have a plan whereas today it was sort of
18:04I'm a bit sympathy for that just try everything different and kind of how one of them comes off the little one went on the boy it looked like it might but they were on the council but there's a couple of these chances in there yeah we're going back to the positives all these injuries shows you how far down the pecking order and Michi had a sin and you know they fall in completely off the radar down you know off down the pecking order these injuries will well they have to provide an opportunity for them to do something actually for the club and justify there because they are the higher owners in the in the club you know they're getting paid top whack and it's time for them to deliver and Tegan Tegan and Michi they're basically in competition for us they were in competition for a spot on the bench that's why Tegan couldn't get in the squad so it's time for him to do something not just stand around and wear gloves
19:10so if it's a bit he did a bit he did a bit so he did do a bit stab it around right but there was on by a Premier League call it either the Chancellor he created was that's what he could literally right it sort of came inside and flagged it in a perfect form like cut with a fence open that will chested it bowed on one of the day in your school so when you can that's the frustration is there's there's like 20 seconds every now and then oh like yeah this guy can play but then about two or three minutes after that it was twice where someone played it towards him and it was just in like a drink left like you just saw not with it now maybe that if you hear me like well I've not really balled up yeah but all I get is 20 minutes here and then I get thrown in what we got made with fear it doesn't dare himself with this kind of quiet explicit don't give away whatever that's how it looks
20:12that's maybe unfair on him but at least even maybe try and look like you're able to go because there's no little touch and you think well this guy can play they're sort of surrounded by absence so speaking of a meachie for him to come the pitch he can fit obviously he had to go off which is frustrating in a number of other ways Chris because not only have you just had that kind of reshuffle at halftime but five minutes in we've got another injury enough and then we are literally getting we're one away from your starting 11 right that's injury number 10 and especially so much well so many ways you could go at it right we want is to see something from Finn for so long he gets his chance in the week and scores will be a bit odd goal but he did well to take it is up he did well to seize opportunity but it was something odd based deserved his spot he's got it he's been firing under 18s whatever it was and then this happens it just feels as you would say typical typical but he was also a couple of times grabbing the back of his leg in the first half way you start to like you when you're watching us now you start to look for that
21:16right man and did he come out with a bit of a twinge and give it a go to him and is that why we've got so many out because you know oh you're a bit injured just keep going because we need you um I mean he was as long as he's not majorly injured it was just good to have him on the pitch for 45 minutes but no it's not me you said it earlier like what can you do he can't really judge him on that kind of you can just say he played 45 minutes football in a like some game of football football if he's injured my god like there's something in it but at some point you've got to say this cannot be unlucky and he'd be the best example of that he hardly played he's done 45 minutes he started clutching his leg and let it go up five minutes after half time it comes summarises off season doesn't I mean the kid 17 and he he played what the the majority of the game on Tuesday like it's this is not normal to be having like players of that age coming in and playing
22:20uh in a game of this nature I would say unless unless they're needed through you know injuries but but having a Michi like again I don't I cannot understand how the likes of the Seni and Michi and others are not being kind of considered uh given you know that they are meant to be the experienced as as Mark said the experienced pros that have that have been coming in in under quite big contracts actually for for the for the team but it just doesn't make any sense to me yeah I would like to touch on those uh Seni impacts and um the down there substitutions the kind of state of play and the other career are already but we'll touch on that when we um and uh near end of the game uh Mark here I've got written down penalty controversy offside Pepple does that mean anything to you? so triple level is fuming yeah I mean we're feeling sorry for ourselves we're looking for every excuse um it looked to have come off their player I mean it just looked obviously it came off a red shirt and Pepple went to ground in the box and the linesman's flagged for offside
23:28that's my understanding of it and the ref wasn't willing to have his uh mine changed funny that um and uh on we go and there was descent from every corner I think uh it would got bugged and uh we felt yeah it was it in just uh but it's a type of decision that tends to go your way at home I think if it was a home park it you know we'd we'd get the decision and uh they just it just felt like one of those days do you ever watch the first show and lucky elf and lucky elf yeah okay oh bugger it was two it was two it was two things on that actually it was two things on that sometimes like there is a like a bayon mob is never helpful but sometimes a bayon mob could be right like number one it is that shirt that we got that many injuries
24:28and number two the cliche that on another day we could have easily got a point is also true it's not an excuse like there was so many they descended well they threw themselves in football you know there was a couple of half-charts it's like it wasn't it was cracked to watch but it wasn't bleak it was it you've got to go like like it was easily you could have said that was a one or draw either they didn't get a flexion you say like what did I just watch or one of ours a pedal is given it's not offside at the end sorry I'll tell you like they all collapsed to the floor they didn't realize that was upside they that there was no more mail in the llama right so that was kind of must have been marginal it wasn't it wasn't a disaster it was just crap are we are we giving this incident enough kind of enough emphasis on it Chris cleverly was absolutely fuming in his post-match words with that this answer yeah that was what I was saying got yellow you
25:28know like in the bigger picture are medieval torture chamber injuries are the bigger problem than referees referees up good games referees up bad games for me it's frustrating in the old man shouting clouds I used to understand the upside right in the old days came off the fender it had been just through now there's stretchy inverses under control versus phases so it's open to interpretation but I don't see I didn't feel like we were broke by the referees they made a couple of dodgy decisions but it seems that we have one to hang the hat yeah I take it as a positive for cleverly only got a yellow today he wasn't sent off normally would have been sent off because he's unlucky out there was a serious point there about cleverly's conduct though like and admittedly like
26:29watching it on TV it did seem like you know that that was a you know that should have been a foul that should have been a penalty given you know like you say Chris it felt like it was it was on side of camera for the fender but I mean cleverly keeps doing this and it's it's getting to be a problem I think you know it's no wonder there's there's there's issues you know with discipline if that's the way your manager's going to be going to be carrying on and and I just think it's poor it's poor from him it feels like recently we may have turned a corner and that his techniques are finally bearing some fruit after you know two thousand of the seasons basically gone and it doesn't it doesn't help him that he keeps doing these things and yeah as Mark says other days that could have been a red but some of speaking off air and he claimed cleverly this is claims that he's had a call with the whoever that is who then told him appeased him with the line that our gala are actually in the top two when it comes to wrong decisions or big decisions against so he was he said that but Cornish fans for him can arms in the air saying well so you have got a point
27:29to your sympathy or things maybe just been fobbed off for the sadly wants to hear I think we both agreed off line actually that that may have not been an accurate an accurate representation I mean maybe that conversation took place you know maybe his girlfriend goes to a different school but I just don't I don't think that's I don't think that's a credible thing to hang out on and I can't imagine anyone ever admitting fallibility to that level just just you know of a professional you know area like refereeing it doesn't seem credible to me but you know what I would say is you know we watched the games like today did not other than that one incident there was not a I don't think the referee had a shocker like anything it was like incredibly bias one way or the other I think he you know he missed some stuff and then that's league one refereeing for you we've seen it all season it's not the same standard as it was last season championship like that's just a fact of life and you have to control for that I think is a as a league one and outfit and it feels like that's just a poor excuse for for for kind of not having pressed to get a to get you know successfully get equalizers there and it's hard isn't it Sam because we don't have we've got some data available to us as kind of
28:32armchair fans with through fought mob and the like we can't see a referring decision so they're not really quantified and dated I mean I'm sure they are with the refereeing bodies they can no they'll have metrics to measure through but it's not released to the general public so it's all very much kind of vibes and recently bias which kind of dictate these debates right absolutely and obviously we don't have the AR at this level which is actually a godsend I think but again it's one of those where is vibes based it all depends on the context of the particular situation as it's unfolding and there was again nothing today that I saw that I felt was like you know the we were particularly hard done by you know apart from that one incident as you say with Pepple but I'm sure those things you know the old phrase you know these things even out over a season like I'm sure I'm sure we've had more than a few in fact I'm all right seeing gets Cardiff we kick someone up in the air at one point right on the edge of the box and that didn't get given out it was late in orient sorry and you know you get away with that one so you know we pay the price today yeah yeah we've got I've got mixed up Pepple the big Pepple chance we're on a Nietzsche corner crossing if you will we're lovely ball but Chris did did mention that so I don't think there's
29:34a lot more for us to talk about regarding that particular yeah yeah I mean I watched I wonder if he wondered there's more time he had more slight yeah he had more time because his control was perfect absolute sweet first touch delivery from and he means he was on on the money he had it he had it too well we needed to scuff it the scabby off off the shin or something that goes in the corner connection is too good and if I move things on to the substitution we mention them Osseni and Patterson Chris I mean Patterson do you remember him yeah I mean that's the you can only sum it up can't you say probably five reputation or leaked might be true noose got nine out we've got some of our highest paid players coming on late and not making a team
30:38when you've got nine players out it's just again like just a kind of metaphor for the season isn't it like he didn't do a lot wrong I tell you did that with good games he came up with this is a mechanism he would he would eat plate really really well um so maybe there's a good in that but that's two of you if that's a good enough any any other team apart from asking you to shoot but if you had nine out your star alleged star players would be in but they seem to be the part of the the challenge um and what can you judge somebody in the last 10 minutes what it did in the last 10 minutes was it made it even more playgrounds you know went from park up all the playground football they could attack it well and lay their second bombs so they probably scuffed two or three judges to win it and then the fantastic Curtis Cross and a great Adler and he was off-site it was just it was like that for 90 minutes like Cardiff was just relentlessly brilliant today was just
31:40relentless the amateur um Sam I guess anyone I have a slight bit more sympathy towards because A we've seen hit that purple patch before Christmas and got injured didn't it which was quite unlike a bit we've seen glimpses there is a quote-unquote project that Patterson and I simply kind of runs out A I don't quite know well what is best position or what he's meant to do and B yeah like Chris kind of alluded to he was our first signing I'm sure he's not cheap this experience there and if you know if the injury crisis is as deep as it is and then he's coming on in the 10th minutes pretty uh with 10 minutes to go rather um it's pretty damning yeah is I I would say this goes back to the recruitment that was done at the beginning of the season just being basically wrong and a squad being assembled for and not the first time I've done this by the way this has happened a few seasons in a row now where we're almost buying in players to build into a system that is just not a practical system to be playing at this level or for this kind of you know uh divisional
32:42I guess right so you know you look at a player like Patterson coming in there have been others as well throughout the season that we've seen Amichi maybe another one I think like these kind of champagne footballers that are kind of you know at a championship level playing like an attractive you know four three three you know sort of pet style tick attacker maybe maybe that was the vision in the beginning I mean this podcast I talked about it before in recent weeks that this this sort of moving back to this kind of slightly more shit housing you know 30 percent possession but we win games five two kind of approach is is what we should be building towards and the players that are now making the first team are optimized for that approach which is working at a league one at a league one level Patterson Amichi um you know there are others frankly that have been brought in in in in the kind of closed season that I just feel were built for a vision for this team and a vision that cleverly had for this that just is not happening and is not ever going to happen at this level Patterson was the first but we're the first signing and therefore the first mousselich signing of the summer I can't think of how he would have fit into the mousselich ball but it's a not really a problem we have to answer because he's gone obviously but how that would have
33:44worked no idea I think maybe Rawls has become the player that Patterson was supposed to be right which is just kind of a more experienced head I think I'm writing saying he's about 33 34 like to come in and have that level of experience and and guide the the team towards success hasn't happened that's ended up being Joe Rawls instead I think and yeah sorry Sam which is really going to answer him right because today we could have really doubled with somebody in that position with the experience for their football and it's like chucking one of the last 10 minutes and see what happens like there's something behind the scenes there that either he's not doing we're not seeing like ask you much in this other day I'd forgotten it obviously but it's true it was like when he was out for a bit and coming back it was like we can't wait for him to come back like he was cleverly was a big talking him up a lot earlier in the season Patterson yeah yeah yeah like you know going to have him back he's a great pro yeah I'm amazed he's still here uh the other side of January but um there we go I'll be I think you've got to be there in all here after all that you've
34:48got better soon we kind of be registered every registered he just out of the patch telling the fucking shit show you know really there's no other word for it it got us if you can't see the funny side of like it's like Laurel and Arctic today just and we could just we could just we could just sweep it you know if you made it up I don't watch 10 lesson but if you're about to 10 less so episode that was that line up injuries selection baggage registered unregistered play you tell me this is men's always can't be real come on this isn't kind of happens to one club but yeah well we don't make things I mean I'm going to really go back to Luton yeah yeah I mean obviously we're all sad that tollae got injured all right but we're two games from wet what Wembley all right we need all hands to the pump so we decide we're not going to take an extra striker
35:49force him to sit on a bus for four hours and we end up playing two sub keepers on the bench I'm sorry but I have absolutely no sympathy at all that's just crazy don't you I'd go you probably good to some laughing like it is it's but it's just I mean it's either cataclysmically awful or it's just one of those seasons yeah before we dig into that can I just look what anything else from the game that we want to highlight what's technically got the ball on the back of the net and the dying moments of the game anything else you guys want to touch on before we take a break can I just come in and just say I think Ronan Curtis was a little bit anonymous today and I'm not entirely sure what his best position is I think he obviously is a very impactful player and he's done a lot of good stuff already since he signed for us but he seems to be kind of being played through the middle quite a bit and I don't know if that's his best position given he is an incredible dead ball specialist in the good crosser of the ball it
36:51just feels a bit strange that he seems to drift like this in games and that I would have liked to have seen him step up and and have more of an influence and I felt he wasn't anonymous but he was kind of anonymous right like throughout I don't I don't I can't remember any kind of moments where he really stood out as he has in in the previous couple of games that we've won because he's not in the position to your point to do much right well he walked right towards the end when he was sort of roaming and it was him that put the crossing that was offside it's that's the problem and that is again what was like was earlier in the season it's hard to judge individuals where the sun total is so out of whack and that shape and he neat he needs more than anybody else that solid midfields be feeding him the ball in good positions we talked last week like him and Edwards haven't understanding Edwards is not in that position like kind of sort of here he could feel for him like what what can you do when it was just pinball wasn't it like the map times the ball was bouncing off people and it's shambolic but he looked at his best when we were throwing caution to the wind
37:53and they were just it was feel like like get up all the curses because he's got the one that might unlock it be so so all those didn't so no very good very good let's take somehow we've got um near 40 minutes of potting about a one-neil drab or weight victory against rather only one thing Chris I can't believe that we we beat not only not of course I can believe that we beat them at home but in the manner in which we hung on right because this is a seriously average our position made it I mean the positive could be shows how far we've come if you want to end on a positive yeah or this way you shouldn't blame referees but we were terrible against them and we won one no and today it was terrible and made one one no but isn't that how referees are like in the round it evens itself out like it was it's not a season for science but I mean a sort of football
38:55prediction group and as I've said it there it gets angry every week but I'm trying to predict school so you're like you just you're shit then you go win five something then you lose two something like what's going on well some of that is injuries and some of that is a whole week's a bit like that what the couple of things long you do well we'll touch on the injuries in a bit of greater depth and see if we are unique or not because it does feel unprecedented so that little nugget of joy to look forward to in part two with a host of a few other things back in a second all right welcome back to part two of today's program's podcast Mark we've kind of talked around it mentioned it if we just spend a minute or two talking about our virtue trophy exit two one two luten do you want to sum up your thoughts quickly on that one disappointed I was cancelled my flight to stanstead
39:58well gutted gutted yeah it's frustrating can you know it's big chance for a reason yeah I mean I was you can't scoff at a trip to Wembley you know it was a perfect opportunity to to get there um you talk about the tarnished nature of the trip to lute and yeah it's a joke it's a joke they shouldn't be playing in it um Swindon should have got by to the or whatever from them both out um we should have got the semifinal then we wouldn't have played that yeah you you're half joke Mark but I don't think you're entirely wrong no it doesn't feel I mean it doesn't add to the integrity of the competition that looser well frot there's good chance how going on with it right yeah certainly a very good chance in the Cheltenham home draw that they'll be in the final it does cut yeah yeah EFL were attracted by this form a Premier League giant you know and all the droves of fans that they might
41:02fucking bring to Wembley now while it's its crap um in danger of going on a hollow way tight rant um yeah um disappointed because we got back in the game at lute and Tegan it's a nice bit of a composure a nice nice finish because he could have easily bounced at it and it goes over the bar and we lose one nil but it was a quality finish from a quality young player I didn't you know pine sights are one other thing I didn't enjoy rash the rash challenge from Ross I hope he didn't get injured doing that crap um because he's ruined my trip to Wembley sorry Archie you're going to have to do some editing apologize yeah you're on you're on it you're on a yellow uh I don't think there's an awful lot more to add Sam a frustrating a frustrating night with some odd circumstances up like yeah I mean I'll be honest I caught the highlights I was actually on a delayed train to manage to that night and I'm pretty grateful because otherwise I'd have been starting the uh
42:04in the stands watching it um I had to say uh it's look the virtually trophy is not yeah like you say it's not serious thing it's it would have been a nice thing to do this season I mean it was only what two three years ago we were in the final um and got absolutely battered by Bolton uh again another one that was just kind of yeah does it help our season probably not is it something nice to look forward to probably yes does you know was that match on Tuesday a great exhibition of football from what I've seen absolutely not and yeah we just move on I was also thinking potentially the mindset may have shifted because of our recent form in the league if it may be something to do with the fact that there was an outside chance of making the playoffs and the focus shifting away from the cup and back to the league um but then today today today put pace to that theory I think yes yeah Chris would be delighted to know we won't mention the virtue for another year or maybe even longer should our league form um pick up you never know you never know Chris I'd like to move on from that you'll be pleased to know and talk about the injuries you you speak about
43:06sympathy for cleverly and I have a certain amount of it too for him because we have picked up over the last three months pretty dramatically and I as I've went on last week's pod and said I do for the playoffs are a tangible option an outside chance but they're there but now I'll kind of come around to the opinion that it's not going to be our form but the injuries are just such an issue that despite all that good work it's going to be our undoing yeah I mean some of the more statistical than me and I ran for the chat some of it up as well like they've actually got the data on them it's something like two more day times and now that you're done playing so yeah but just three and a bit of it because well like it is it's our third up there's a weird angle for this though so cleverly sort of point in the fingers of the players a bit up to the game today isn't it like you know they need to look after themselves which suggests that we've got a load of them like I don't know going out of
44:07like riding their bikes and falling off or something the other way again okay I don't see that until you get it yeah I remember when it was off to the that fans for a minute it was Alex it was very eloquibly we were sort of sort of going through how does this work with a CDO coming in and a director of football who reports the CEO a head coach who reports the CEO right you've got that structure who do you quite that but who who looks after in these days like in the old world that would have been I'm the Derek because I assume it still is but there's a little bit of maybe the other thing we need to do is look at our important structures because I didn't you know I've sort of stopped listening to what cleverly says because it's a bit odd at the best of times you know so midweek just announcing Pepples got a release calls out of that
45:08way right he is a bit unpredictable in multi-sets but yeah that did that's what bizarrely I think about the injuries does it help say who's fault it is but this you can then try and fix it but we're in a very sort of weird flat structure where some of it might be who's picking the team and they pick it in your players the fitness team might be saying you know well that isn't helping the manager might be like well your job is to keep them fit you know I mean you can sense who where does the buck stock in our structure yeah I think yeah yeah I don't get that I think I think you're certainly on a conversation with head of head of physiotherapy and head of sports science right and I'm not saying it's their fault but I think it'd be ludicrous not too not to ask them a few questions and it may well transpire that the footballing staff are completely ignoring their they're kind of professional advice but they don't know that those teams are not saying we told them that we've got four players that are injured and every week they pick them
46:14so now we've got six now we've got eight and now we've got ten right that is as possible as they're training with a rack and spikes you know if there is then they're the fitness team and someone's doing the on the pitch of the graphs work like you see what I mean but it's it's got to be the summed total of the selection the preparation or lack of whatever they're doing recovery all that calls it must it must be hard to get a handle on that because there's no one nurses running all that they will buy Sakura the men's structure so after after the looping game cleverly spoke to the spokesperson and he dropped a bit of a line which I thought was quite interesting saying we are not keeping our budget on the pitch enough which is I mean it's I think I grew them it's hard to dispute right we've got a top six budget and we that is not on
47:15the pitch you know as Chris said a whole starting eleven is currently injured if plekki is indeed injured I imagine he is going off at half time it's a huge issue a huge issue and if you're the you know the board the owner whoever the people pumping money and you're going to be you're going to be fuming aren't you to see your money not being kind of well utilized that's outrageous I mean let's say it's a number of things it's the injuries obviously terrible again modern football is so I think you know there's so much analytical element to it this is there's a huge amount of training and as you say kind of like you know diets the way they the way they kind of cool down warm up there's a whole level of complexity to it which I can't pretend to understand and so the injuries could be for any reason I remember the days when you'd see trigger an Ian Stonebridge down at Destiny's on Tuesday night that's not that's not happening anymore obviously that's a very different world that we're now in and I think that you know that's obviously one area but honestly the the investment has not been a good one and this goes back to my previous point about the team being sort of created for a vision that has turned out to not be one that is a is a
48:17viable vision to pursue right so a lot of the investment that's gone into this squad a lot of the bigger name players I guess you could say all the ones in the higher salaries are not fit for the start of football that we've ended up playing and we've actually gone with a much more agricultural or be it sort of successful in recent times approach so I think yeah that he's not wrong but again he does tend to come out with these things and it's it's confusing because surely that's an internal conversation not one you'd be telling pretend yeah I guess I'm not to fight his corner but if you look at that cardiff game that run of games where he's found a system and then it's to lie and pepper up front and it's all kind of ticking and you've I agree with you about the the mixed recruitment over the summer is it was a mess but it looked like between him and Derek they're kind of figured it out which is why it's so frustrating that it's all feel like you've slid down to the bottom of the snakes and ladders board with this whole host of injuries but I guess Sam you could come back and then so we've signed an injury point players which in part we have
49:20yeah I mean I've I'll dare Ben a rooster on the on the bench being a good example kind of I just say registered deregistered and registered again it does it does feel like we are we are sort of scraping the barrel of players that we can bring in running out of squad depth and also like squad unevenness I think it's fair to say as well like we we don't have anyone that could step in for Tulli really which is why today we had pebble up top on his own with either Curtis or Watts playing off him right we didn't seem to have a ready made number nine to come in and sort of play alongside him despite double osani being there available so it just feels like again we've stumbled on a system that works and now we're changing our system again to kind of you know accommodate the injuries but there isn't a squad that has enough depth to be able to properly accommodate that so we're making we're making a lot of difficult decisions I guess to kind of put out a team that's competitive but on today's evidence they're saying it's gotta be there's gotta be better investment going forward I feel it could possibly I guess I was going to say it's reactionary but again I'm feeling I'm just also on cloud loan nine last week I don't do a complete 180 I guess
50:24maybe a fairer assumption Sam would do that when you make a short term fix you open you expose yourself to such things happening right that it can unravel pretty quick it's true although you could say that that run of good form was only what three matches like so you know I was three months three months Sam three glorious months we were we were drawing a lot in that in that period I would suggest I would say that those three matches that look like a step change and now we're back to back to what we were doing before right so like a swap once what it doesn't make a summer and I've been asked all week are you cleverly in now you know if you change your mind on this like everyone in my WhatsApp chat saying you know are you on this now the answer was you know if we can win today then maybe I will be and we haven't so yeah I'm not having three three kind of encouraging performances and a fantastic result against Cardiff no doubt to you know that doesn't doesn't make our season doesn't make our season sorry yeah I wasn't here last week unfortunately so I couldn't join in the love in yeah it was working with 442 or two up top it was working so today
51:29all right injuries but we had Oseni could have played up top with Pepple in form striker Oseni who has had his moments but we prefer to play Curtis out of position or you know try what's at the end there they're okay I mean especially Curtis is he's quality cutting in quick pass a quick crosser but he's not an out and out striker so you're doomed let's we tried that against Louisville didn't work we tried it again definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results sorry Tom didn't work try next time to bring Oseni make him sit on the coach for four hours and play him at Lou and instead instead of having two subkeepers on the bench mark I've got I'm looking for fixtures and trying to look ahead with some optimism is there's an international break coming up right which may or may not affect us we lost brawling it lose we sent him back to millsboro McCabe so I believe we are no longer kind of eligible
52:34we no longer have three players we should trigger an international break for us but I'm hoping the opposition might my point is if we could then it would just be four games to get through just four games and then we can hopefully then have to take a break whether it's a week or two to get some bodies back that is my here that's my plan for navigating this choppy waters with about 12 games left so you know I haven't looked at it but it suggests we might have six at home we're gonna have to win all of those win all of those and pick up a couple of wins away from home and see where we're at um you know we tolla is going to be out for a month or something like that um excuse me miss three or four games but we've got don't we've got to take it one game it don't custom next week got to be them um brass you know I'm going to we're not going to have nine or ten every from now until the end of the season they're going to dribble back we've got beat don't
53:35curse don't see where we're at get some momentum it's looking pretty bleak now but things change really quickly um the trend on that note mark is the trend is we absolutely we're of eight or nine now because every time we get some bad some others four over like if there is a a theme running through stuff that sadly is the fee I know what you say time once we've been like oh we might get that player back and when we do they either last a galley for me or someone else drops off some are more important others some are more dead wood than others some are absolutely necessary um we're obviously I mean I said about a month ago we're not going to make the playoffs if Galloway gets injured he's he's gone hopefully he's back um yeah it's it's not it's looking pretty bleak but you know maybe that's the we'll have to give it one more push one more push and see where we're at one game at a time you know unlucky alph at the moment but things change very very
54:40very quickly um yeah it came back like he was two weeks yeah he's he's he's soon back how does field is the game that Galloway is put mark to come back for yeah mark up how does field our goal hardest field 20 second of March would be could potentially be called off due to the international break I'm very much operation get to international break to lie Galloway cane hazard if you get though that spine back then mark well raise a positivity that we love to see from Barberry I may just be shooting up if your Huddersfield though you'll be looking at our gold bear bones in you well you know I mean Ryan Hardy's not going to be called up for Scotland um yeah that's for sure um they'll you know they'll be looking very closely at that fixture and uh yeah so you know we'll see what happens um things change so quickly though yeah it's um it's not looking great but that's it would never going to be an easy ride that's why the odds were
55:43200 for one third promotion um yeah I looked in the week after after Cardiff they were down to 16 to one so that's quite a shift it is indeed it is indeed yeah so Donkaster next Sam I don't been not an awful lot to say kind of one of those must wins I would I would say that yeah another one um yeah let we go again or I would say is you know and I don't know haven't seen Donkaster for a while but if they do play a slightly more possession based game then that could suit our guy right and we don't need players to be putting in eight nine out of ten performances if we can do what we do against Cardiff and against Layton and almost play a little bit on the break and draw the team on and then get behind the lines and and hit them hard get Curtis whipping in some great crosses get pedal on the end of those you know I think there is a there's a world in which we could regain that form that we've just abandoned in the last week uh even in spite of injuries I truly believe that and I think that having Jack McKenzie back in as well is a big plus I thought he looked really good
56:47today um and having hard in playing in his natural position um and maybe pushing sorry another forward a little bit more as well will uh will will also improve things so there's little there's a little raise at sunshine that you could sort of look at potentially for that game but um as I say or it's a it's a must-win game as you say it's is this is really does hinge our season does hinge on this I think and we've got a huge run of games coming up where we've essentially playing the five teams in front of us or six or so I won't talk you through it but you can you all have a league table to hand so just to get a bit of momentum before we go into that which will genuinely be a season defining run would be good wouldn't it yeah absolutely I think that's what I'm saying is if we can get that win against Doncaster that's the the catalyst to then start to kick on and get back to that run I don't know about you guys as of like you know the Cardiff game the Orient game um you know a Blackpool game it felt like there was something building here which you know we could withstand injuries we could withstand you know kind of buffeting to the to the squad because we had this
57:47way of playing now we'd stumbled upon something that actually worked this level and today just feels a bit flat because it feels like actually haven't got that um and we never had that and maybe it was all just you know minds but but you know I think if we can get that win statement win against them uh get back on track and and hopefully start to pull some results together against those teams ahead of us then that could save our season but it's a long shot or we could keep losing two players plus every game right which was happening to happen for us two or three games like another two players around and by the end of March will be like four fitted games or playing kids like that that is equally possible unless something changes do you think then Ben Aruse might get back in the team probably not no in gold will add him in gold or five foot two of him that Baker up front well did I apparently our loan sidings were on fire today weren't they down
58:48in true road don't see that oh this is a midfield that you know Caleb Roberts you know he was good enough to play against leads twice last season and then starred in the cup win at Brentford in central central midfield but he's he's not good enough to get in our squad no don't agree with that either but uh there you go well well and well Mark let me lighten the mood before we bid bid farewell can you take all your clothes off again you've got a quiz you've got a quiz you're going to stretch actually actually don't actually don't have a quiz Mark I apologize I had it in mind but um time yeah it's not nice and so on just because it's not what was it but that's that Mark this is hard work isn't it but Mark try again if I can back it work but Mark we are this is episode number 200 of the pilgrims podcast and anniversary if you will or not and certainly a milestone it's not an anniversary 200 episodes Mark I will give you 30 seconds to uh to
59:55bask in the sunlight of such glory well that is quite an achievement for us you know such a tin pot podcast um no I digress I mean yeah thanks for all your hard work and I mean that you know you've uh you've put in some serious hard work um on this pod gone above the call of duty on many many occasions and uh I appreciate it and I hope you're uh yes um you can take special pride in in the achievement of uh 200 and let's hope um we make it to 200 more mmm I actually have you since we've started it our points per gauge for another cliff yeah like if you did 200 if you did that's 200 before against this like make it with a with a problem well yeah I think you're gonna have to work on this yet since we started recording when we started weren't we like the 10th best team and but in Britain and regarding the game was like
1:00:59it was we'd won more games in the last five years than anybody a professional football yeah but not even joking and then we started with this noxence every week and we've got two goalkeepers of the bench half a team and losing the world the river shot I tab believe how naive I was you know because I'd actually believe that we were smart and you were top six level when you top six times top yeah well we had looking back in hindsight I mean we had all these tremendous players didn't we we more than we took a Michael Cooper Finna says and and a brilliant coach so it was only right to dream and if you couldn't be positive after 101 point season when could you be positive mmm a bit of symmetry to that mark that obviously all kind of came crumbling down against rather than at home in the championship regarding she might as departure and here we are who knows will be for episode 400 if we'll get that far if I can offer an outside of perspective really quickly this podcast gets a huge amount
