Meetin' with some investors and all that other stuff for Hearty F Seltzer. Show goes on. I hear you. We're selling out in a lot of places and all that other stuff. So it feels like that's a lot of our time these days. However, once that gets settled, we're good to go after that and who cares? But occasionally pop a bear will take over. In the meantime, I caught my buddy's trailer on the interwebs and it's our good friend, Derek. How are you, Derek? Welcome back to the show. I love your new show, Pimp My Hunt. It is out now on Wolf Untamed, Derek Wolf. We helped you out with this in the beginning of it and your wife had pitched us on it. I was a huge fan of the concept. It's a lot like Pimp My Ride, except for hunting. How did you guys come together and figure out what was going to be the pilot episode and all that other fun stuff? Well, Abby was my wife, obviously.

So Abby was talking to me about, what am I looking to do in this hunting space? I'm just going to do what everybody else is doing and just go out and show me shooting stuff and whisperin' around in the woods and it's just the same thing over and over again. It's so boring and people are just kind of sick of seeing it. There's nothing really new. And she just, I don't know, she just out of nowhere comes up with this idea. She's like, you remember Pimp My Ride and I was like, yes, she's like, what if you just showed up at someone's house and just took them hunting. And I was like, I was like, yeah, that sounds great, honey. But like, you realize there's like all these regulations and tags and all this other stuff that you have to do to make that happen. She's like, well, so what? Let's just do it and let's make it badass. And I was like, all right, let's try it. So she kept, for about six months, she just kept kind of coming up with ideas and talking about it. And then one day I was down there with you guys, and we were just sitting there and I was talking to Joel about the idea, you were like, hey, you know, Joel was the editor

on Pimp My Ride, right? Yeah. I was like, no fucking way, it was meant to be. And it just, it all came together and man, it was so cool because it went kind of exactly how we wanted it to, like we snuck up in this guy's house, woke him up at a bed, tossed him on a helicopter, took him to the western slope of Colorado, which is just like, it looks, it's a crazy scenery. The scenery is just unreal. And then we took him into this cabin and just hooked him up with like 10, it was 10 grand worth of gear. So clothes and shotguns and packs and energy just all kinds of shit and he got to keep it all. Yeah, he got to keep it all amazing because when we were talking about it on the show, we were kind of promoting it on Drinking Bro's Sports during the NFL season. Was it Caleb Newberry? Is that it was one of our, I think it was one of our listeners. Who did it? And I actually know him personally through the years, just at live events and shows and

all that stuff. He's a great person. How I got to meet him was, he came up, he was in a live show and then he came up the end to give Drinking Bro the week away and he said, I was in Columbine. Yeah. And I had no idea, I'd never met a kid who was actually made there at Columbine during that process. I mean, sorry, not during the process, but during that horrific shooting. But in the process, we became good friends after that where I was just, I mean, I ended up hanging out with him for like an hour, hour and a half in the studio afterwards, just asking him questions and I was like, man, I hope this isn't too invasive. I've always been curious about the story of Columbine, what actually went down, how bad it was. And then since it was so long ago, if people were still going through that, did you get a chance to chat with them and say, hey, do you still think about this on a daily basis or any of that stuff? Yeah. Yeah. It was really actually, it was actually kind of perfect the way it worked out because I

was, I told him, I said, hey, man, I know, like when I picked him up and we were driving to the airport and everything, you know, he kind of mentioned that he was at Columbine. I said, don't tell me anything about it. I said, wait until we get to the blind. We're going to set up on a blind and wait for some turkeys to come through. We're going to call him in. I said, while we're sitting there, that's when I want you to tell me about it. So there's like a whole little four or five-minute segment of him just telling me the story about that day and what it was like and what the school was like and it's just, I just go check it out because it was, it's such a cool video. It's unlike any other hunting video that I've ever seen. There's nothing like it, man, and it's just, it goes from, it goes from all this action and helicopter to, you know, getting them geared up and getting ready to go out into the woods and then we get out there and set up on a blind and then he just starts telling a story and, man, it just blew my mind because like, you almost, everybody's been, everybody's been a high schooler. Sure. So everybody can relate to like what it's like to go to high school and, but nobody can,

not a lot of people can relate to what it's like for a couple of psychos coming there and just shoot to place up. And you know, the funniest, I know that there's nothing funny about it, but to me, the funniest thing he said to me was, he said, man, I thought it was a prank. He said it was like kind of closer to the end of the year. He's like, I thought that they were just letting off fireworks because that's what people did at the end of the year. Like we would let off fireworks and the ducks and stuff and, you know, like that was like a normal thing back then, you know, people used to be able to play, play, play pranks because their school shootings just weren't really a thing, you know, that was the first one I can remember. I don't know about you. You do. Yeah, I was in college. You know, I remember going back and some of my fraternity brothers were like, hey, dude, do you believe what's going on the news? And I was like, I just got out of class, I don't know what's going on. And then we all just kind of watched the television together. And all of us were stunned, one, because I was in college at the time, but two, I just graduated high school. And you look at those scenes and you think to yourself, there's no way this could happen to me at my high school. And then it happened to him.

And that's what he said. He said, man, bullying wasn't like a thing. It was like the norm, it was a normal school. It wasn't like this weird bullying culture. It was just like, it was really surprising for it to happen, you know, and he talks about how he comes up into a hallway and here's bullets whizzing by him. Yeah, like, man, I was like, did you're so lucky that you didn't get, you know, get shot? He's like, I know, I just, he's like, I still didn't think it was real, but you could, like, there's a certain scream, he said. There's a certain scream that you hear that you know shit's real, that it's not a joke anymore. And then he said the way teachers were responding, he was like, okay, yeah, this is not a joke. We're going to get the L out of here. Man, it's, it's just such an insane thing. And then now I feel like in today's world, you hear about it every couple months or three to four months and you're kind of used to it. But anytime you say the word Columbine, it immediately takes you back to that place where

you were, where the first one was and all that other shit. And then I remember as it happens when I was sitting there watching it with the rest of my fraternity brothers, I, I set out loud, I go, I guarantee you this is going to start a trend. There's going to be cats, bull shit and everybody wants to be famous because now these two guys are famous, even though they're fucking dead. And sure enough, over the years, you know, you have the Aurora, you know, a story with a Colorado. I think it was the Joker movie the guy showed up to, it was, yeah, the Dark Knight, Dark Knight Rises. That's it. The third one in the trilogy actually. Oh, thanks, Bob. I appreciate that. But yeah, and you know, you hear about these shootings all the time, but like still to this day, rap references Columbine and all that other shit, like I hear it all the time still. Yeah. It's, it's pretty wild. You know, I've met a lot of people, obviously living here. I've met a lot of people that go at a graduated from Columbine, but I've never met someone that was there when it all went down and he was the first one I met.

And it was just an incredible story, man, it just, just, but it's just, it's, it's makes you, it scares the shit out of me, you know, because when you have kids in school, there's just like, who knows? There might be some psycho trans kid that decides they're going to show up and shoot everybody. It's like, you know, when are we going to make it, when are we going to make a decision to, because that happened in nine, that was 99, right? Yep. It was in 1999. We still haven't put guard armed guards at this school. Like why are they're not, so we have a Texas. In Texas, we do. So when I drop my kids off, there's a police officer there all day, and then trying to get through to the school itself, good luck. There's two separate doors, two different types of bulletproof, proof, proof glass. And usually, like public school, yeah, yeah, public school. And so that's every school in the state of Texas. And then usually my kid forgets something, you know, I've got to drop it off a class, a water bottle or whatever, and the woman will just politely motion, there's a cart

right in front of the glass and she'll say, hey, just drop it there, we'll come out and get it later and then give it to your kids. They won't even let me, even though it's my son, inside, to drop off his water bottle or anything else. And by the way, I don't mind it. If you're going to that precaution, great. So when I drop my kids off every single morning, I don't have any fear that anything's going to happen because it's pretty secure. Now the thing that you can't stop is kids themselves bringing in shits because there's no metal detectors or things like that. But also do you really want that? I mean, you and I grew up in a time where we didn't have any of this bullshit. So do you really want to walk into a school every day where there's metal detectors and then, you know, people write fun through your backpacks and shit? No. Is it going on at some schools around America? Yes. So you're torn on it. Like how far do you go? I mean, Ross, I graduated high school in 2008. And even then, if we were going to go hunt, like sometimes we'd go hunting after school.

So like I would have my shotgun and like all my other shit, like in my truck parked in the parking lot. And it was like normal, no big deal. You know, as long as it was like in a case and, you know, that nobody cared, wasn't a big thing. And that now they would crucify you. Oh, it'd be a, you'd be on national TV for some reason. That was, you can't even do that anymore. So yeah, I mean, I just think that, I think it's a good story and I think that it has kind of everything you want in a show. So I'm really hoping that, you know, maybe we can get somebody to pick it up because, you know, we sell fun to the pilot. Yep. And, you know, that was my first, you know, that was our first crack in anything like that. And I'm just really, that's like, that's the thing about, and I don't mean to, you know, just like height my wife up, but she's so talented. It just really, everything she does, you know, as when it comes to like building homes and it comes to investing money and it comes to like literally everything that she touches,

it like works out because she just has a mind, she has this like artistic mind that just, like when she sees it, she like has a plan and puts it in motion, whereas I'm just like brute force, you know, yeah, I just want to lift my way through it or, you know, just, you know, struggle my way through it. What she thinks of like the best possible way to do it and, man, just watching her coordinate everything and in the, in the video, you'll see every now and then you'll see her pop in and out. But she just really coordinated the entire thing and it just, I don't know, man, I was, I was stunned. I was kind of, I was shocked at how well it actually turned out because I wasn't sure what to expect. But you never see down to the detail, like if she didn't like the way I, she was like, I, she, because I was tired of shit, you know, like, we went to wake up at the ass crack and on and go wake this dude up and then like, I was, so I was tired and she kept telling me like, you better cheer up, like, put smile on your face. Be nice. And I was like, all right, sorry. That's the entertainment, but that's show business, baby, where it's just like the audience

doesn't care how shitty your day was, all they care about is, hey, dude, this is my entertainment for 30 minutes, for a half hour show or for a podcast, 90 minutes or whatever. They don't give a fuck what you went through at home. And like, I learned that a very, very long time ago and first movie I was on, I showed up. It was hungover. The next day I was like, I need some aspirin or whatever and they're like, hey, you're on in like 15. I was like, I don't worry about it. I'll be there. And they were like, oh, good. Because a lot of people aren't. And you have to realize that it's about what you're seeing on screen. No one gives a shit about anything you went through behind the scenes. All they care about is the finished product and whether or not they were entertained for that particular day when they watched that particular show. And that's it. Now with your wife, when I talked to her in these production meetings, she's a natural born producer. I mean, she had contracts on lock, ideas, creators, producers, everything, credits, everything in contracts that you need to get in and out the door. And it's very, very smart because no one does that.

Nobody's prepared for the other side of the business. They just look at it like, oh, hey, we got this cool thing and they shoot this cool thing or whatever. But they don't think about the contract aspect of it. And then for us, since we were homies, I'm like, all right, let me try to just get this budget as low as possible because I know you guys are coming out of pocket on it. And then go with God after that and it appears as if it turned out amazing. I can't wait to watch it tonight. It just dropped yesterday and I'm looking forward to it. This one was a turkey shoot. What are the hopes and dreams for the future? Like what's the ultimate kill for you as far as hunting goes? So from Rossi, here's what's happened in the hunting, in the hunting universe. There's a bunch of these super wealthy Americans and a bunch of super wealthy Russians that they all love to hunt, right? Yep. So they would pay an exorbitant amount of money to go on these crazy hunts, whether it be a big horned sheep or a moose or a big elk.

But what they do if they've inflated the price because when you have, there's a guy, you know, Jimmy John, Jimmy John's a big hunter, right? He'll pay millions of dollars for tax. He doesn't care. And he's inflated. And I'm not saying it's Jimmy John's fault because he does a lot of work for conservation too. I'm just saying that guys in those positions have inflated the hunting community and to make it so that the average guy, like, you're the clumber that makes a hundred grand a year or the, you know, the teacher that likes to hunt. Like his opportunity to like draw a tag and then, okay, so he draws that tag, right? So he draws an elk tag in a certain unit. Well, he doesn't know that unit from, from anything. So he wants to go hunt on this ranch. He's going to pay 15 grand just to go kill an elk. Yep. And that's not like, that's not reasonable, you know? You want to go kill a stone sheep up in British Columbia right now, $120,000. Holy shit. How much meat are you getting out of that, too? You're not getting shit for meat.

You're doing it for a set of horns. You're doing it for an Instagram photo at that point. You are. Yeah. Well, and there's this thing called the sheep slam. So there's four sheep in North America, four big horned sheep in North America. There's a desert sheep where she could do down the Sonora. That's a $75,000 hot. And you can do your doll sheep, which is up in like the Yukon and Alaska and it's said, all white big horn sheep. That's 50 grand, 60 grand. And then you have your stone sheep, your stone sheep, 120 grand. And then you have your Rocky Mountain big horn. And the only way to get that one is to draw the tag or buy a tag at auction. The cheapest one I've seen is 200 grand. Holy shit. So you're talking, you're going to spend a million bucks. Like if you do it, like, you're going to spend half a million bucks. Nobody has that. Nobody has that kind of cash just laying around. I mean, I guess some of these rich dudes do. But that's what I'm saying. These guys will pay, these guys will pay it. So a moose hunt. You want to go to Alaska and shoot a moose in a grizzly bear?

You better be ready to rent a $50,000 check, $60,000 check. Yeah. I've got one friend who's done it and he's rich and he does it once a year. He goes to Africa and hunts a bunch of wild shit. I'm like, well, Africa is affordable. Because once you get over there, getting there is the most expensive part. Once you're there, you can wheel and deal with those, with those PAs, with those private hunters. Oh, yeah. They will wheel and deal with you, like, whatever your budget is, say your budget's, you know, five grand. They'll figure out a couple of animals for you to shoot while you're there. But then you could spend a hundred grand a shoot an elephant if you want. Yeah. Yeah. He was spending, because I asked him and he told me, he said he was spending 50. All in as far as flights, getting there and then what he was killing, right? And it was some exotic shit that like, you know, it was like a half a zebra, a half elk thing where you're just like, oh, shit, what the fuck is that, right? And I would see. I know what you're talking about. It was a, it was an island, it's probably a big island. They're like the biggest antelope there is. They're like a, like a thousand pound antelope.

It's crazy looking. It's weird looking, dude. It looks, it looks like ice-white shut. Yeah, the hunting world is crazy, man. It's a, it's, there's a lot of the people blur the lines between like trophy hunting and meat hunting and, you know, but the problem is is that, you know, a lot of these guys, they do, they hunt public land every year. And if you're a public land elk hunter, you're with a bow in your hand. Your chances of success are less than seven percent. So like, you're probably not going to kill an elk, like it's just, you know, you're going to try your ass off and you might, you say you get five days. You took five days of work off of work, right? Now your wife's pissed off at you. Yep. Right? Because you're gone for five days. You're taking five days off of work where she would rather go on some fucking vacation or something and you're like, well, I'm going elk kind of September, you know? So now you've spent five days, you've hiked a hundred miles, you, I mean, seriously, like you're putting 10, 20 miles on your feet every day.

And then just to come home with nothing, right? And I just, it's those guys that I want to be able to take them on a hunt that they would never get to go on, right? And I'll give you an example. So, so last year I did an over the counter elk hunt. That's an elk tag that it was a Colorado and you can just go by and hunt public land. I was able to kill an elk. I got lucky and had a little piece of private I was able to hide. But even I had a thousand acres, I was allowed to hunt, right? Seems like a fuck ton of land, right? There wasn't, there was elk, there was a 20,000 acre piece next to us. That's where all the elk were. So I had to like call an elk off of that property to get it to come over. So even if you have private, it's still really hard. So what I did this year is I bought something called a commissioner tag up in Wyoming. And how much, how much of those run you? 35,000. Holy shit, for, for one year. Yep. Okay. And then is it unlimited? Do you get to kill as much as you want? No, you kill one. Whoa, dude, no one. Wow. So what is it?

What is it? What's the one? Just an elk? You get to pick the, you get to pick the unit you want to hunt in Wyoming. So Wyoming has the biggest elk, honestly. If, if you ask, well, the people will say, no, that's Arizona, whatever. I like Wyoming hunting better because it's more mountainous than everything. But the area that I'm hunting, it's a 330,000 private acre ranch, right? So not only am I spending 35 grand on a tag, I also have to pay the outfit or 15,000, right? Because I want to kill one big giant bull once in my life. Yeah, and that's what I have to do to do it. Or I just wait for another 10, 15 years until I have enough points to go to one of these and draw a tag on one of these units in Colorado. It's like, that's what I want to be able to do. I want to be, I want to get a budget so that I can do things like that and take people to do that. Like I want them to experience that, you know, because not everybody got the play in the NFL. Not everybody, you know, started a sandwich company that sold for billions of dollars.

You know, not right? Now, some people are just grinding it out, man, and they're working their ass off, and they're good parents, they're good fathers, or they're good fathers, good husbands, and they work their ass off. Those are the people I want to take and give them those opportunities, because there's a ton of organizations that take veterans and do cool shit like this all the time. You know, but there's nothing really for the regular guy. Like for the guy that's just like, he loves to hunt. He loves watching hunting, he loves supporting guys that are hunting, but fuck who's doing anything for him? Exactly, and it feels like everybody's been priced out of it. You're right, man. I mean, looking just looking back at my friends on Instagram, the ones who were doing it are all rich. Yeah. I don't know any poor dude who's out there just got lucky. It was just like, holy shit. I fucking killed this, this one thing, and yeah, you have to have access to it. I mean, where it is, and that's the other side of it, is where that's why I want to like really not just take them on a hunt. I want to hook them up with the best fucking gear that you can get, right?

Like if the next one ends up being like a guy that's an archery hunter, boom, we take this archery hunter out, and I'm going to hook him up with the bet, because honestly, if you go buy a brand new bow, set it all up, you're going to be in that bow for about $2,000. Oh, easily, a danger spot one. He bought a bow, and I was like, hey, man, how much was that fucking thing? Because they're so sophisticated now, that it looks like a goddamn machine gun for you. Well, it's carbon fiber. Yeah. Made out of all carbon, and then it's like, you know, it's crazy. The bow sites, and then the arrows are fucking titanium and fused with carbon. Like there's all kinds of cool shit, you know? Yeah. All kinds of cool shit you can do, right? It's not like it used to be where, like, you know, you used to be like, you know, you get a bow for $500 and, you know, get your arrows for a couple hundred bucks. You'd be in it for, you know, $6,700 and you'd have a bow that you could shoot for a couple of years. Now, it's like every year, they're pumping out a new bow. And, you know, some guys are shooting bows that are old as shit, and it's like, you know, they're not wearing the right boots.

Like, it's because a pair of boots is $700. Yep. Yep. A pair of mountain boots, $700. It's become such a, I feel like, and I'm not shitting on Rogan here, because he brought hunting, I think, and bow hunting in particular, back to the forefront with camhains and all those guys. But, because of that, and because it just took off, it's also gotten very, very expensive, not only for the hunts, like you were talking about, but the clothing and the gear and the outfits and the boots and all of it, who were your sponsors at the end of the day? Because I know you and Abby were working on some behind the scenes. Was first form on this? Yeah, first form was on the show. I just had sponsors set up just for the show. So I had a company called Born Primitive for Gear. You know, I had a first form, I had Garmin, I had Mossberg, I had lacrosse boots. So you're the best of the best on that? Turtle box, for like outdoor speakers, grizzly coolers, half face blades with Andrea or Beto, knows like, that's the other thing.

You want to get a good knife? Andrew's knives are like, they're like custom one of a kind hand forged knives. You know, it's not like this bullshit. You just go buy it at Cabela's. This is a knife that you're going to have. I'll tell you, I had a knife that I skinned an elk in three deer with it and a sheep this year, and I never had a sharpen it once. Yeah, and that's no bullshit. Like normally while I'm skinning an elk, I got to keep sharpening it with most knives. But with that fucker, it is sharp as shit. So I hooked him up with one of those knives. I had six hour binoculars. They have these binoculars that are like three grand, and they're stabilizing binoculars. So you can literally glass and drive. So you can look through your binoculars and drive, and it will stabilize the thing. So it's not bouncing around. It's the coolest shit of holy shit. Oh, that's rad. Marsupial for like buying a horn. That's just what people don't think. Like you need a bino harness. You need a pack. Initial ascent came through with the packs. So we had a bunch of sponsors on board

to like really to really hook it up. And I don't know if I'm forgetting. There were so many sponsors on this one. And I just had a really good call with a company, you've heard of Kuyu, right? Oh, yeah. I just had a really good call of Kuyu the other day. And they were like, hey, man, if you want to do this, again, we would love to be the gear sponsor for this one. And I was like, fuck yeah, that would be sweet. Because that's the other thing. Go look, I want anybody that's watching. Go get on Kuyu.com right now, or SICKA, or any of these companies. And look, you're paying two, 300 bucks for a pair of pants. You're paying 200 bucks for the top. And then you need like layer, you have to layer yourself up. I mean, you're going to spend a thousand bucks on just your, just walking out the door, just walking out the front door. You're going to spend a thousand dollars. Let alone the equipment and everything else that comes with it. Then that price gets even higher, along with the tag fees and everything you were talking about earlier. They've made hunting very, very expensive now. And what I'd love to see, Derek, is one red piece of yarn,

a tree branch, just like the engines used to use. And then, hey, dude, go out and kill something with that, sharpen the stick on your own, you know, a tree branch that you kind of do, and then see if you can kill something like you're in the 16, 1700s, and then find that out. Because right now, for the cost of an average, you know, normal dude to go out and do this, it's just too fucking high in the economy we're in right now to go out and have an experience like this. I mean, just for, well, think about this, Diesel's fucking $5 a gallon right now. Yep. So now you've got to fill your truck up. You've got to pay 900 bucks to 1500 bucks for a fucking elk tag, just for your over-the-counter elk tag. And then just, and then you've got another 1000 bucks in clothing, you've got 700 bucks in boots, you've got a $500 binon harness, you've got a pair of $2,000 binoculars, you've got a $2,000 bow, you've got, yeah, you've got another,

you've got a $1,200 pack, yep. I mean, think about the numbers, like you're starting to rack up here, and you go out there and hike your dick off for days, and you don't kill anything. No, you're coming home empty handed, which Derek, you did a lot. And I kept seeing it on your Instagram, and I kept making fun of you. It was like, man, I hope he gets to kill something one day. Just one day, it'd be great, and then he'd find it. He finally did. It's hard, man. It's hard with it. I don't care how, I don't care how, that's the other thing. Sneaking around is six foot six, 300 pounds. Sneaking up on anything is not easy, dude. It's so fucking hard. You're coming from whoever way. It's like, yo, there's a fucking bear out there, bro. Like that's you. You're the bear in this situation, it's trying to sneak up on these bodies. Yeah, I gotta do it. So I have to do, I have to approach everything differently, because if you look, everybody that is like a really highly successful bow, honor is built like campaigns. You know, just a shorter guy, they can walk for fucking 30 miles, and nobody cares, like it's not every deal.

But I've figured out ways to get around that, and that's why I like hunting out, because you can call Elk and get them to come to you. So if you just give yourself a good backdrop, and set yourself up in a position, and think like, where would the Elk not go? And where do I think he's gonna wanna walk? And that's kinda how I did it. For too many years, I tried sneaking in on you. My camera guy would be like, dude, there's no fucking way that this is gonna work. And I'm like, telling you, dude, I'll sneak in there. And it's like, all right, I'm not going there. And what do you know? I get busted, as soon as I get in within 50 yards, they start seeing me, it's just... The animal's literally just pointing upon you, and it's just like, I see you, mother fucker out of you. I see you. Yeah, fuck outta here. So, you know, it's just an expensive, hard, but I love it so much. You know what I mean? I love doing it so much, and it's been such a great outlet for me for coming out of the NFL, and something for me to like, hyper focus on,

and just, you know, but it is, it's fucking expensive, man. Even for, I mean, I made a ton of money playing football. And even something, and I still, I'm like, I'm not gonna pay that much money. I'm not gonna do it. Like, I'll pay this, I'm gonna do this outcome one time. It's a one time thing for me. I did a desert big horn sheet last year. That was a one time thing for me. It's like, you know, we've made it so nobody can do it. It's not, it's not cool, it sucks. Nobody gets to do it. And the guys that do do it are just grinding an out on public land, and I just, those are the guys that I want to give an opportunity. Like, just give them a chance to come do something bad as. And I know we started with a turkey hunt. And the reason why I picked the turkey, Ross is because it's the easiest, like, entry level hunt for somebody to do. And I think that's smart, by the way, because, you know, some of the shit that I see you on, obviously we're friends in real life. Some of the shit that I see you on, and then I'm texting you back and forth with when you're on these hunts and you come back empty handed. Like, I know how hard it is. I think a lot of people don't know how hard it is.

But with a television show, it's different. You have to present a pilot to where it's like, there's a beginning, middle and end. And then at that end, if you're doing a hunting show, it better end with you killing something. So I think you guys were smart and picking a turkey for the first one. Because some of these shoots, you wouldn't know how long your days are gonna be. Like, oh. So remember, we were gonna do the bear, right? Yeah, and I said that's a bad idea, Derek. I said it was a bad idea. Yeah, and I went on that bear hunt by myself, right? Oh, how did that work out? What was the end result? If I would have, I should have took a rifle with me. Because these fucking bears, so listen, so the first, I had a new camera, I have a new camera guy that I've been working with his name's Randy Rocker. He's an awesome camera guy, awesome editor. And he's really good around in the mountains. He does a lot of work for like these big rifle companies. So he's not really used to bow hunting. So he's used to be in like set up for like a 500 yard plus shot.

He's not used to be in 30 yards from a fucking bear. Did the bear charge him? No, it didn't charge us. But the first day, the weather sucked, right? It was too warm. It was just, if it's hot, bears are like us, man. If it's hot as fuck, they're just like gonna stay in the shade. They're not gonna be out in the open. So you're just, you're looking for bears all day long and it just looks like you're covering so much ground. We were on horseback. It was, it was a really fun time. But the first day, we finally started to get a little sprinkler rain. And I'm sitting there and I'm like, man, this is a perfect time for bear to step out. And the camera guy goes, you mean like that one right there? And there's a fucking bear coming right at us. So we, boom, we go down and set up the wind's perfect. And he's not a bow hunter. So he doesn't understand. He's used to being able to move around and not be seen. Bear's not looking 500 yards away looking at you. Like they're just, they're just fucking around. They don't care. But this bear's coming and he just acts, he's like, I'm hiding behind a tree.

All that's out is like my eyeball. Like I'm just barely looking at like this. Cause I'm waiting for him to come down through here. So I can shoot him. And he just like stops him's tracks and looks and he's like, well, fuck, I'm not going that way. And he like, it does a big circle and gets our wind and bus. And I'm like, what the fuck happened? And I turn around and I ran, he's like, I think he saw me. And I was like, well, what the fuck were you doing back there? He's like, well, I couldn't see around you. So I was like, standing up behind you. I was like, so I'm hiding behind a tree. You're just standing up. I was like, with a camera in his hand too, staring at the bear. Yeah. I was like, no wonder any fucking saw. So that was like our first learning experience. And then we go for Ross. We went four days without seeing another bear for long days. I'm talking about hours and hours behind glass. Just looking, when I say behind glass, I mean, just looking to your binoculars, just trying to find one. And then finally in the last day, we find one. And we bomb off this hill and we hike. It was like a five or six mile hike through some nasty,

gnarly shit, get to 60 yards on this bear finally. And I'm about to draw my bow back and I hear, hold on. And I'm like, what? I look and he has no shot. He can't see the bear, right? He's like standing below me. So I like wait for him to get up. And as soon as he gets up there, go to draw my bow again, the wind switches and the bear just fucking, boom, bolts out of there. So I was like, I was like, dude, good thing I didn't bring some fucking poor bastard out here. Did you get it? No, I never got to draw my bow because I was waiting on the camera guy to get set up. No, that fucking way. Yeah, so that's why it's, but I told him I said, listen, man, I said, don't ever tell me to hold on. I said, if you get the shot, great. If it's just me, if we have like a hunter out here that we're trying to like get on film, that's different. But if it's me, I don't give a shit if we get it on film. I'm just trying to kill bear. Like, don't worry about it. He's like, I know me. I just want to do a good job for you. So we did part one, we set that up as like part one.

I'm going back to the same spot, may second. And I'm going to try to do it again because I can't just, I can't just take the defeat. It was just too difficult. I got to go back and finish it. And for the cameraman, he can get the aftermath after the bear shot. So it's like, cool. Like we did this. Don't worry about it. And that was one of my biggest concerns when you me and Abby were in these producer meetings of like, look, Joe's great. And he's super talented and he's here. But he wears like skinny jeans and he's from LA and he's, you know, a Hollywood DP. And I was like, man, I don't know how, he would hold up on like, you know, a shoot that's like five, six mile hikes and all that other stuff. Cause those dudes, those cameraman and those DP's are on a different level where they're probably in either the same exact shape as you are or in more shape than you are because they've got to carry around gear the entire time and pass. Yeah, they're carrying around a bunch of shit. They're carrying around multiple lenses. They're carrying around a tripod. You know, they're carrying a lot of shit.

And that's why, that's why I think Randy's going to be really good for the next episode because I want Joel to edit it, but I want Randy to film it because he's capable of being out there. And that's not a knock on Joel. He's just not built for that shit. No, no, look, our audience knows. Our audience knows Joel. They know that it was funny. Cause Clay was with us too. And there's a scene in there where I'm like, telling Clay, like, if you fuck this up, Clay, like, I'm going to shoot you. I put him in a ghillie suit and it's stuck him in a tree. I didn't even, as that guy even been in a ghillie suit his entire life. No, it was so funny though. And you're sort of seeing Joel was so scared. We were in the blind and Joel was, I kept telling Joel I said, listen, dude, these turkeys can see everything. Like, if you fucking blink, they'll see you. So you're just seeing Joel in the blind. He didn't, I don't think he realized it. Like, he can't, they don't have x-ray vision.

They can't see through the blind. He was so scared to move and his legs were going numb. It was so fucking funny. I was dying. I was fucking dying. I was like, dude, you can move. It's okay. I can't see you in the blind. I was like, but when you're up above this little screen, don't be fucking around too much. So he was so scared to move because he didn't want to fuck it out, but it went perfect. Man, this bird, we call this bird and he came right down. And Caleb just blasted him and high fives who ran out there. Then we took the, and then the great part is we took it. We showed everybody how you process that meat so we can eat it and we chopped it up, fried it up, made like a turkey nuggets out of it. And it just, man, it was like everything that I thought it, it was better than I ever thought it would turn out. That's amazing. By the way, I, because I saw Caleb a little after that, and he said, man, it was the greatest time of my life. And he goes, what I didn't know, he was,

he's a diehard Denver Broncos fan. Yeah, so he knew you and he was, you know, a huge fan and all that shit and I was like, even better like holy shit. What are the chances? And yeah, that's cool. Did he ask you questions too about like the Super Bowls and all that shit? Not until afterwards, and it was funny, because you know how I am. Like if I don't like you, I just won't say anything to you. Yeah, but if I like you, I'm just busting your balls the whole time. So I was just giving Clay shit the whole time. Like I had no idea that he was like this huge fan of the Denver Broncos. I'm like giving him shit and making fun of him the whole time, because he's funny. You know, he's a funny guy. Yeah, it's great. So I just kept giving him a hard time. Like he was, because he was like, he was all jacked up. He wanted to do the bear run. He was like, I want to film the bear run. Like I want to go on that in this night. And he was breathing hard, just getting in and out of the truck. Oh, I'm sure. I'm sure he's a big dude. Caleb's a big dude, man. And for anybody who's not, you know, that in shape to track five, six miles and everything else, you don't realize what it really requires

to get in that kind of shape to go hunting for that shit. Yeah, and people think like, you know, I have a good friend who's a, he's a sheep guide up in Wyoming. And it's a once in a lifetime tag when people draw that sheep tag. And there you, his average hunter is like 65 years old. And he says sometimes he gets these guys that like can't even get on the fucking horse. And he's like, buddy, this is gonna be a long fucking hunt. But he gets him, he gets him on the horse and he gets him up there. And I'll tell you a crazy story. He told me he had an elk hunter one time. It was a Texan. And this guy, he was, his dream was to just kill a Wyoming elk like he just like, that was like his dream. Well, he lied about his health, his health issues and stuff on his, on his release form. Smart. And he was up there with a bunch of his buddies. And he said this guy was bigger round than he was. It's all, and he said, all of his buddies were often, you know, and they finally found a bull that was in a position

where they could get this guy to get a shot on him. And the guy gets all excited, runs up to the horse and they're like, where's your rifle? He's like, oh, fuck. So you know, waddles back down to his tent and grabs his rifle, comes back up and goes, he's climbing on the horse, falls over dead. It's hard to stop it. Yeah. Falls over the shit. Apparently he had like some serious hard issue. That is, all of his friends kind of told them after we're like, yeah, he had a really bad hard issue. And this is like his last chance to ever kill an elk. And, you know, they're running joke was like, well, he's still chasing elk, you know, like he's living his dream still. He died doing what he loves. So what do you, what do you say about that, I guess? But it is, that's why I think the turkey was a really good intro. You know, I think there's even, there's other things that we can do, like this bear hunt that I do. As long as you can climb on a back of a mule, you can do it, you know. And then the same thing with that wagon,

this hunt that I'm doing on this property in Wyoming, they have roads and trails built all through that thing so they can get you around on side by sides. You know, I don't think that taking a bow hunter is probably going to be the what I do because it's such a small, like the success rate is so small. It's very specific and you've got to have trained for a long time. I mean, I've shot a couple of them and dude, it's hard. It's hard. It's really hard. Instagram makes it looks easy, but it's not. And not just the shooting part is hard. It's the controlling your adrenaline when you're fucking 30 yards from a screaming 750, 800 pound bull elk, like they're screaming at you and just like ripping trees apart and your adrenaline's just pumping in. I mean, I'm, I practice shooting my bow all the fucking time and I'm like, I've been in some of the most high stress such, I mean, I've been in front of 80,000 fans screaming their fucking heads off, but dude, I'm telling you when a bull elk is coming in, I get so nervous and jazzed up and anxious

because like everything has to go right, you know. And it's a little different when you have a rifle. So I think that like, we'll start with rifle hunters and doing shotgun hunts, you know, and stuff like that because, you know, at least I know they're gonna get the shoot, they're gonna get an opportunity to shoot at something, right? With a bow, they might never even get the chance to draw their bow back. And he's like, man, sometimes you're going 26, 30 miles. Days, not getting anything, going back up there, trying to get other shit and he goes, even as skilled as somebody like, he is, it doesn't matter. Like the animal might not be there that day or might not be one to cooperate or the weather. And there's just so much that can go wrong. It's the wind that gets you. Yep, the wind, because these elk especially, they survive with their nose. They don't, they don't see that great. They can see, but they don't see that great, especially when they're like all horned up in the rut and they're chasing that, chasing cows around

and fighting each other. They're just not looking, they're looking for elk. They're not, so like anything other than an elk, they don't really pay attention to. But if they get it with for you, they're fucking gone, dude. And it's not like they just run a couple hundred yards. They run like five fucking miles. And now you're like, oh great, you know what I'm trying to, so I can't go back up. You're gonna spend, now you're gonna spend the whole next day just trying to find them again. And it's just, it's really hard, man. And so what I always say with bow hunting is that, you know, you need, you have to do everything 100% right. And that bull has to screw up though. He's gotta make a mistake. If you do, you can do everything right. That bull can still make a mistake and the wind will still come and fuck you. It will, it will switch at the last, because they're not stupid, do they hang out in areas where they know the wind is gonna move around so they can smell everything that's around them. And like you just have to hope and pray that you get in there in the right time. And everything just goes your way.

And it's just to do that within like five days. And you know how production costs are? Oh yeah, dude. Fucking run production costs for five. We ran production for one fucking day on that turkey hunt. That's all we had to do was one fucking day. And we were in that fucker for 30, 40 grand. Yeah, yeah, dude. And imagine if you don't get the animal, then you keep going, then you gotta pay the camera guys and all the other shit. I mean, it's, and then the edits have to that. And it's like, the camera guy is a thousand bucks a day at least. Yep. At a minimum and it sucks. And then that noise too, God, I can't get that noise out of my head. Mmm. Like that, as they're tearing through it and you're just like, holy shit. I couldn't imagine doing it with a bow. I've never gone hunting with a bow. I've done it in the backyard with friends and all that other shit, but nothing, not to deal with it. Everybody's getting out. I think that even if you're not a hunter and you're not into hunting and killing, I think that you should at least experience

the elk rut one time. Just get into like an elk rut where the elk are fucking rutting and fighting. And they just, they'll get into a tree and just start ripping a tree apart with their antlers. And they're screaming at each other back and forth and their dicks are hard and they're pissing all over their own necks. It's fucking crazy. It's like, it's fucking insane, man. It's the coolest thing you'll ever see. And I just think everybody should just, just explain. You can do that at a, there's a place called Estus Park here in Colorado and if you ever heard of that. These elk are just like pets basically. Okay. If you go up there in September, you'll see them out there fucking going nuts all day, just screaming their heads off. And it's the coolest thing ever. And it's, man, it's just something everybody should get to experience. But I'm really looking forward to my neck. The next thing I want to do is on top of Pim My Hunt is I want to take some of my former teammates. Like I'm trying to talk, Emmanuel Sanders is a really good friend of mine, right?

Why receive it? Yeah. You know, he's a, he's a pro baller and an alpro and just a great dude. And he's always like picking my brain about hunting. Cause I know that he's like interested in it. He's from Texas originally. So he really is, he's a country boy. And he's just never hunted and killed anything before. And he's like always picking my brain about it. So I'm like, you know what? I was, I was thinking about this one time I took him four wheeling, right? We took side by sides out. Yeah. And you know, he's a receiver, you know how receivers are. He shows up in Louis Vuitton. Oh, dude. He was not prepared for any of that shit. What's up? We're in a Louis Vuitton jersey. It's like $1,200 a shirt. And all this is going to get fucked up. And I just got fucking ruined in the mud. And he was like, I told you, I was like, dude, I told you it was going to be dirty. He's like, well, that was really dusty. I was like, why are you wearing Louis Vuitton? So my next thing I want to do is I want to take guys like that.

Down to Texas and go on like pig hunts and shit like that, you know, just to just to get them out and see how wild it is. Sure. You know, that would be really fun. And then, you know, Abby, that was another one of Abby's ideas. And then another idea for us is take your wife hunting because there's a lot most hunters. Their wives aren't into it. No, they hate it. They fucking hate it because their husbands are gone. Yep. And they're like, home alone with their fucking kids. And you know how that goes? It's just, you know, and they're like, oh, your head must be having a great fucking time. It's like, yeah, I had a great time getting my dick drove in the dirt hike in 20 miles, not to kill anything. You know, it's like, so she had this idea of taking, taking wives and their husbands in film and that interaction just to see like how funny that shit would be, you know, because I took her turkey hunting last year. And no bullshit, Ross, we're hunting turkeys. And I told you they could see everything. She comes out with this bright orange hat on. I'm like, what the fuck? She was wearing orange boots.

I was like, honey, you can't wear that. She's like, well, what if it's cold? I'm like, we'll put something that's like, not a fucking bright orange. You know, I'm right here, sign on that, you know, and she was funny because I filmed it all with my phone because I thought it was hilarious. She came out three different times and three different outfits. She was wearing deor sunglasses. Like, sparkly shiny deor sunglasses. Nope, nope, nope. I was like, honey, that's not gonna work. So I think that doing stuff like that is like super interesting for people. And, you know, could just be fun for the series. But, you know, pin my hunt is where the focus is at right now. You know, I stopped doing the podcast even because my heart really wasn't in it, man. I love the hunt. Yeah. And, you know, I was good at podcasting. I just didn't love it, you know? You know how it is. Yeah, you gotta love what you do every day. And you gotta love what you do every day. I just had this conversation that chat with somebody today and I said, look, man, you gotta wake up every morning and love what you do.

If you don't, it's not gonna be good, whatever it is, right? It's whether it's podcasting, hunting, working out, relationships, all of it is something you have to want to enjoy every single day. And that's all that it really is. And you personally love hunting more than life itself. Like, I've never met anybody besides camhains. I think that love is hunting more than you do. And you're in a fortunate position where you get to do all that stuff and say, all right, great. I can afford to go on this hunt and do all, you know, all the fun stuff that I've always dreamed of. But you also worked your ass off to get there. A lot of people don't realize that either. So, to me, I was just like, yeah, dude, you know, continue and have a fucking blast. Because also, you know, people don't realize they see the show or the NFL show or whatever it is we're doing. And they're like, I wonder if they're friends in real life? Well, the answer is yes. And also, I know the hard shit you've been going through over the last year with your mom and everything else. And the audience was asking you what happened to Derek

and I was like, look, when the time is right, I'm sure Derek will share it with the rest of the world. It is not my job to speak out of school and say what's going on in Derek's personal life. So, since you did post about it, I feel like I can ask you about it on here. How are you since your mom passed? I know that was extremely difficult and you were going through some shits and I texted you and I said, hey, man, I lost a father and the grieving process is weird for a parent. I would say more so than a friend or, you know, in acquaintance or a cousin or whatever it is. Because your mom and your dad are with you for your whole life. And it's something that's so indescribable until you go through it. You don't really know what to tell people. And yeah, I know that you took some time off personally for that. How are you doing since that? Yeah, I'm doing good. I've got a little backstory. My mom and I had a really, our relationship was estranged because really, she hasn't been in my life

since I was 11 years old. She's just been in and out. She's struggling with alcoholism and drug abuse and just wasn't like a very loving mother. And I always felt, I always felt like a lot of hers. I felt like a lot of resentment towards her because I didn't have a father. I had to step dad for a while. He was abusive. I just never felt like I was protected by my mom like you're supposed to be like every son. Like, you know, even I played with a lot of dudes from the hood man, like none of them had fathers. Yep, most of them didn't have fathers. But they always had a mom. You know, and I didn't have that. And I was just pissed off about it forever. Just so mad, you know, because especially once I had kids because I was like, I can't imagine letting something like that happen to my daughter. You know, I can't imagine like just not giving a fuck about my kids. And, you know, as I got older and then, you know, what happened was that, you know, I got baptized

and, you know, became a follower of Christ and put that, that just taught me how to forgive people. And really, I just, I was able to forgive her and I started to have a little bit of a relationship with her, you know, just like, with a bent arm, you know, just keep her head with a bent arm because if you let her do close, she'll start to manipulate and that's just how she is and she'll try to get something out of you. That's just how she is. She can't help herself. She's just a survivor. She survives by any means. That's just how she is. And she's very selfish and doesn't really think about anybody else but herself. But when she got sick, she had COPD. She was only 57. Oh, wow. She had bad COPD and, you know, I was supposed to go, I was going to go home and visit her. I was like, all right, I'm going to come and see you, you know, while you're sick, this nap, but I was supposed to go right after Christmas. I was going to go and see her. But we had planned a, as a family,

we had planned a Costa Rica trip with our kids, with Tatum and Roxy. So we took them down to Costa Rica and as I'm getting on the plane to fly back from Costa Rica, I get this call that like, hey, your mom's not going to make it to the night. And I'm like, well, what? I was like, the last time I talked to a nurse, she said she's going to be fine. Like, well, she's not. She's not going to be fine. And they were just pumping her full of morphine because she couldn't breathe. Like, you know, see anybody that has, I didn't know COPD was that painful, but I guess it's like super painful. Yeah, it's in your lungs and your chest, right? Yeah, yeah. They said she only had a quarter size piece of her lung that was working still, like a quarter size of a quarter. So she's, every breath was just like pain. So from the airport, my face primed her and she kept, she always wanted to meet her granddaughter, Roxy. And so I let her face time with Roxy. And I got the face timer and I told her that I forgave her and that I loved her and that, and then she told me

that she was really proud of me and that I broke a generational curse. Wow, she said, I'm so proud of you and you broke a generational curse. And then later that, on Christmas Eve, I was in church and I got the phone call that she died. And I just like, I didn't think it would affect me like that because we hadn't been so close, but there's a part of you that always thinks that your mom's going to come around. Like eventually she's going to come around, figure it out and we're going to have that like mother-son relationship that you always wanted. And when that's like a definite God, it's, now it's definite, it's like not going to happen. It just hit me hard and I just, man, I just broke down in tears. Like I was just like a, I just folded, you know, and I'm so upset and I felt like I felt like a shitty son because you know, it's still my mom, maybe I should have done this. What shit, you know how did you start blaming yourself,

figuring out what could I have done different and when written reality, there's nothing I could have done. You know, and then the whole situation was so fucked up. Like she was living in, she was living in this like, she has, she's a cat lady, she loves cats, right? So she's living in this shitty little fucking house and right off the Ohio River and one of those little shit towns, you know what I'm talking about? Yeah, dude, those are, I mean, it's a one, it's a one bedroom, you know, family room, you're looking at eight, 900 square feet. Yeah, just a nasty piece of shit, she's 57, she's got some boyfriend that's like in her 70s and there's, I'm getting calls while she's dying, I'm getting calls from my uncle and he's like, hey, you know, these people are in here, they're stealing her shit. And I'm like, what? So the cops get called because like my uncle and this guy are getting in fist fights and shit. So I'm, you know, I'm talking to the cops and the cops are like,

and I'm talking to the nurse and the nurse is like, we need to move her back to the, to hospice. And I hear, and I, so I tell him to put her in the hospice, I was like, all right, take her to hospice and she was like, that's the best thing for it. Dude, I guess she fucking threw a giant fit, like flip the fuck out, did not want to leave, wanted to die in her own house, like just freaked out. So I felt so bad that I like made that decision and she like went, she was like freaking the, I guess she was screaming, like going nuts. And I felt really bad about that. And then I felt really bad about all this white trash bullshit that was going on. And I just, man, that's why I just had to take a step back and take a break from everything. And because I just wasn't in my right mind and had to do some work and things that I thought I'd healed myself from, I clearly have healed from. But I, you know, I feel way better about it now. Like I have days where I'm like, because what happened Ross is I stopped seeing her

as this neglecting mom. And I started seeing her as like this young girl, right? Yeah, because I had daughters. So that's how I was seeing her in that way. And I felt so bad because she was abused as a, she was, you know, brutally abused as a child too. You know, she was, her stepdad raped her and she was, she had all kinds of abuse. Her whole life was just full of abuse. So I just started feeling so bad for her. And that empathy, right? Like I started feeling empathetic towards her. And that just hurt me even worse. And so it took me a while to like, I just, I couldn't focus on anything else. And then on top of that, we're going through this fucking home build that's taken four years now. So we're like, like, we're on top of each other in this little rental until we get in there. So like all this shit was going on. And that's kind of why I had to take a step back because I needed to do some work on myself before I could like get my shit together. And, and I have, I've gotten my shit together and, and came back around. And all I had to do was go to a couple of music festivals

and melt my face off a couple of times. And now I'm good. Yeah, and it's, it's a weird thing. So my father died when he was 59 and told the story on the show. I don't know, maybe over a year ago or something like that. And I got a call out of nowhere. Same thing. I had said on that show where my regret was, I didn't get the chance that you had. I didn't get to say goodbye on a FaceTime call or anything else. And I wish that I had. He had called. I didn't answer the phone that day. And I just thought, all right, I'll talk to him another day, no big deal. And at 59, you don't, you don't expect your parents to die in their 50s for Christ's sakes. You're just like, all right, well, they'll live in, in, in, in, who the hairs. And then when it happens, you know, you get the call or whatever it is. And you're so shocked and stunned by it. And then yes, you're immediately filled with this weird regret where you're like, all right, well, maybe I should have done this, this, this, there to this. And then you realize over time that it's just kind of life.

And what they went through, hopefully you can teach your children and your, you know, your family to live a different way. And that's, you're taking lessons and kind of passing them down to the next generation and hopefully breaking that curse like you said or the cycle or whatever the fuck it is. And then instilling that in the next person. What's wild to me, though, is that you were able to make it through all of this. Go to the NFL, have this massively successful career. And then come out of it on the other side because I know the relationship you have with your wife. I know the relationship you have with your kids. We've all been in dinner and hung out together a million times. And it's actually shocking to hear. I would have said, you probably came from a great family and this was normal. But in truth, you fought your way out of that. I didn't know that about you. Yeah, you know, and it's funny, Ross, because the area I live in is called Cherry Hills, right? And it's like country clubs, you know,

NEPO babies, great steakhouse. Yeah, great steak houses. Like it's just a lot of a lot of old money over here, right? And it's fun. People always say that to me, they're like, man, you just don't seem like you came from that. And I'm like, I said, well, I'll tell you, and it's, I never say this to them, but I always tell them like, when I walk into these places, I feel like an imposter. Like I don't feel like I belong in this motherfucker at all. Like, you know, I know I don't, I got tattoos and dreadlocks. I know that. I know that. It's like the first time, but like my mentality is so different. Just from the way I was, I was brought up that, you know, you can't, it's so hard to reverse that thinking, you know, of like that survival, it's like a survivalist mindset where these people have never had to survive shit. No, like, no, they're like, they're the upset because they didn't get a fucking Lamborghini. Like, you know, they're paying, they're paying 200 grand

to join a country club, you know, like they're, it's just fucking crazy. It's just a whole different world, man, and out. And when I see this, when I see these people like going through like crises, I'm like, you guys are fucking so soft, it's unreal, you know? But I've met a lot of good people as well, you know, who have, you know, have done it on their own and came up that way, but they're all different because did the nepotism is unbelievable how these people act? Like, it's fucking crazy how they act. And you see it, you know how this is? Yes, I see it all the time and like, you know, I didn't have a rough childhood. However, we didn't have, you know, like a crazy amount of money or anything else, like if we, like Red Lobster was our, like our big meal, like for the Friday night, it was a fucking big deal. I'm sure, yes. Cheesecake Factory, like shit, all of Garden, things like that, it was a big deal. And then, you know, my parents, we were renting a, they rented a house so I could get into the school district. And we were the only ones renting the neighborhood and there was some, some fucking dickhead kid

who came up and told me and I was like, you're, you guys are the ones that are renting in this fucking neighborhood and blah, blah, blah, blah, right? And I was like, fuck you and I had to ask my parents. I was like, is this true? And they're like, yeah, we don't have, we don't have the money and any of these people have, like this fucking, this is, you know? And I was like, oh shit. And it was kind of a big wake up call, but also it made me more proud of what they did. And then two years after college, I'm starring in my first movie, I'm the lead and all this other shit and I get invited it's like huge fancy Oscar party. I don't have a fucking suits or any of that bullshit, you know? And so I had to go out and get it, kind of fake my way through it and then figure it out and then I'm with the biggest celebrities on the planet. Like I'm talking like your top 100 of all time. Tom Cruise, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, everybody's there or whatever and I walk outside to have a cigarette. I'm just looking at this huge lawn and pool. There's big fat dude next to me. And I think he's, you know, like me. And I'm smoking cigarettes with his dude and I go, man, do you imagine I'm in a house like this one day? This is fucking insane. We're at this Oscar party or whatever.

And he just starts laughing and he goes, yeah, it would not be something, you know? And I go, yeah dude. And I go, this guy, man, I mean all this shit and it's just him living in this house like fuck. I go, that was amazing or whatever, right? And this was, this is no lie. So this is Oscar party on a Saturday night. Watch the Oscars on a Sunday night, which is the next night. And I'm just watching like a normal fan, you know, on TV and they go, and the Academy Board for Best Director goes to Peter Jackson. I'd never seen Lord of the Rings. I don't know who Peter Jackson is, nothing. And it's him who goes up and gets the best Oscar. And I'm like, oh my God, dude, I feel like such an asshole. Just bummin' his cigarette going, cause you imagine I'm in a house like this fucking rich dude, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And you're like, yeah, you're unprepared for all this shit. And you feel like an impostor and you're like, oh, yeah, you do. You really do. The fuck. Yeah, bros, I was, I golfed with the guy the other day. His family is so wealthy and he's an impressive dude.

He's got his like masters and finance and then he went and got a lot of degrees. Awesome, dude. I had no clue who he was, right? I just think he's a normal fucking guy. You know, he pulled up in like a regular Tesla, like, you played around a golf and we got along great and we're fucking hanging out and he's asking me about my childhood and everything. And you know, something got brought up about flying, you know, and I was like, yeah, dude, I never flew on a fucking plane till I got to college. Like, they put us on a, on my first time flying, we flew to Norma, Oklahoma and got our ass beat by the sooner. Like that was the, that was the first flight. That was my first flight. I was in college. I'd never even been on a fucking, we didn't, dude, I'm from the Ohio Valley. We don't leave the Ohio Valley. Nope. Like a big deal is going to fucking Pittsburgh. It's 40 minutes away. Yup. And by the way, nobody makes it out of there. I mean, they live their whole life. No one makes it out of there. And he was like, he starts talking. He's like, you know what, man? He's like, I was like, what was your childhood like? And he's like, honestly, man, nothing like yours.

And I was like, oh, yeah, I was like, when's your first time flying? He's like, I'll tell you this. When I was a kid, I thought everybody flew private. Oh, boy, no. And I was like, dude, seriously? And he was like, yeah. And I was like, that's fucking crazy. And then we've become really good friends now. And he's like the shit that his family does is incredible. Like they were like, they had a limestone mine back in the day that he saw it for stock and Pfizer and just fucking crushed. Like, absolutely crushed. And now he's like third generation and he's just like growing the wealth even more. It's fucking cool, man. It's cool to be around people like that. But it's also like, man, what would that be like? You know, what would that be like to just not have, I know what it's like to not have a safety net, you know? And they don't know what that's like. No, we don't have a safety net. It's just a whole different feeling. Yeah, and I've asked all these investors and I started the top of the show. This is, you know, Dan's meet with one for heart AF. It's like, dude, you meet with these guys and all of them say the same thing.

I go, when, like, I ask them, same as a podcast. I'm like, when's the day that you know that you made it? And everybody who says the same thing, the day that I never looked at my bank account again. Yeah. That I knew that I never had to look at my bank account again. I knew that I made it. And I was like, interesting. I was like, I don't know what that's like yet. I have no idea what that's like. And God bless you. And that sounds fun and all that other shit. But I was in a similar search when I went to Ohio State with finding wealth for the first time and meeting wealthy people and NEPO babies and all that other shit. One of my roommates had a fucking plane. He was a rally for Christ's sake. Since we went, we went on dates. It was me, him, and we took two girls out to dinner. We flew from Columbus to Cincinnati. So whatever that five star restaurant is on the river up there in Cincinnati. And then we flew home after that. And I was like, oh my God, dude, is this how you're pulling ass on like a weekly basis? And it goes, oh yeah, dude, isn't this the best? And I go, God, damn it being rich is awesome.

And I try, it really is. It really is. And I try the rest of my life to be like, okay, cool. I gotta get to that level, let's go. Well, the funny thing about wealth is every time you hit like a new level, you get introduced to these people that are on a whole nother fucking, can you, I can't imagine what it's like to just fly around on a private plane all the fucking, like, oh yeah, let's just get on the jet and go to a fucking Aspen this week. What a dream. What a fucking dream. I have a house in, I have a ski and ski out in Aspen. Then I have a place in Florida and I have a big ranch in Wyoming. Are you fucking, like people live like that? Yeah, and they just fucking fly all over the place under a jet and it's, it is. And people listening right now are probably like, dude, Derek made a fucking good doing knowledge in the NFL. It's like, hey, a private jet and owning it is a whole nother level, don't you know what I mean? It's three to five for that private jet. Then you gotta maintain it and all that other shit and everything that comes with it. You would blow half of your fucking savings accounts just trying to keep up with this one goddamn private jet.

Just trying to keep up a fucking jet, dude. That's fucking crazy. Yes, insane. And then like the trips that they get on, they're like, oh yeah, we're going to, we're going to light comeo. Yeah. What the fuck is that? Is that Kentucky or something? They're like, no, it's in Italy. That's where George Clooney lives. You know, that one you're like, oh, okay, cool. Well, what the fuck? Yeah, or they're like, oh, we're going to, like, I'll give you an example, because you know, Abby and I go to EDC in Vegas every year, right? And we were looking at like table men prices for like, because Omnia is open on a beach club, right? So we were looking at table men prices. Based on the fuckers, I'm like, who the fuck is spending 50 grand for one afternoon? Yeah, yeah, oh, dude. I'm like a 50 grand for a four, it's going to be four hours. You're there for four hours. It's, it's absolutely, there's a guy in the chat who goes, you ain't no Joe Rogan, buddy. And I go, no shit. Our YouTube channels throttled all, you know,

we signed a video deal with Spotify, which is fine. But I'm like, yeah, dude, Joe can do that. Absolutely. And then you know, you know the money, like the scales of all this shit. And you're like, cool man, I make decent money. But yeah, I'm not on a Joe Rogan level, not even fucking close. I'm not signed a hundred million dollar fucking Spotify deals, all right? Yeah, that was, I didn't sign a hundred million dollar fucking NFL deals either. Right. And people don't understand me. You're like, there's levels to it. Oh, yeah, I mean, it was even in the NFL. It was like, there was Vaughn Miller and fucking Peyton Manning. And then there's like the rest of us. Right. Right. You know, it was fucking crazy. Like Vaughn, I remember the one off season, Vaughn was like, oh, yeah, I'm going to Europe and I'm going to follow Drake around. And I'm like, what? You're like, oh, okay, for the whole summer. Or it's like, no, I just flew on, I just flew, I just got on a jet, flew over there and we fucking followed him around. We just went to all of his shows. Wherever he was at in Europe and party to that fucking area.

And I was like, well, how much did that fucking cost? He's like, it's like a million bucks in flights. I was like, what the fuck? No, no, dude, no, no. And then like when you gamble with these guys, they're like, fucking spending 20 grand a hand. Like it's nothing. Oh, yeah, I'm sure Vaughn Miller was just dropping. He was probably in the high roller rooms just dropping 10K a hand, 20K. 20,000 dollar hand. Like it's fucking nothing. And when sometimes you lose it sometimes, you know, it's just, but he like, he like set a little limit. Like, all right, I watched him do that. The first time I ever went to Vegas my rookie year, I watched his mother fucker lose for 20,000 dollar hands back to back to back to back. Oh, it was like, all right, let's go. And we got up and left. And I was like, dude, what the fuck just happened? That's more than somebody makes in a year. A lot of people make in a year. And it's gone in 20 seconds. And then you see, then you see, I know we're talking about like wealth and how, like clothes.

Yep, the money that people spend on designer clothes is fucking mind blowing. It blows my fucking mind. When I see somebody wearing a $1,700 tank top, I'm like, what the fuck is this? It's nuts. And people like, I got this, I'm wearing this gold watch right now and people are like, holy shit, dude. What did you do? And I was like, this is the Casio, it's rubber. This is, you know, the rubber Casio G shock. I was like, this is like 80 bucks, 90 bucks. And they sent it to me for free for Christ's sakes. I go, it's painted gold. But this is rubber, dude, it bends. That's all this is. Like it's hilarious and it's from the 80s. But yeah, I could never justify that type of shit. And I don't, man, there's, there's limits that I have to spending where I'm like, I'm sorry, I just can't justify this. This is fucking retarded. Yeah, it's, it's, and there's, I'm, I'm all for, I'll spend money on experiences. Yeah. So like, when it comes to like an experience like a, like I said, it would go to easy every year, right?

So I will splurge on a fucking table at the festival because I'm gonna be there from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. Mm-hmm. So I'll spend, I'll get a group together and we'll all pitch in five grand a piece. Right. But you can do that. And I'll do that. And then I'll spend, and I'll have to spend another couple, I'll spend another couple thousand just in my room and on food and everything and whatever. But like, it's also my wife's birthday weekend. So it's like a whole fucking celebration. I'll do that because it's an experience. Sure. And trust me, when I first got my first big payday, I did do dumb shit. I went and bought a fucking stupid big wall. And a, and a fucking Cuban link diamond out chain. Like a fucking ring. Did you really? You fucking wore on, dude. That's an idiot. I traded that chain in for my wife's engagement ring though. So it all worked out. That's smart. That's smart. Never, I'll never get the money for the watch because it's got fucking diamonds in it. But yeah, that's the, that's the weird thing. And then since you brought it up in an engagement,

before you get out of here, I got to ask. It just got announced that your buddy, your beef fry, Travis Kelsey's getting married to Taylor Swift on July 3rd. I would have met, I mean, you guys have been best friends forever and grew up together and all that stuff. I would have imagined you'll probably either be in the wedding or at the wedding or something like that. I'll be there. Okay, great. Because when you introduce us to him, when we were at the Denver game, God damn, is there a nicer dude on the planet than him? No, Travis is the best. He's the best. It's hard to hate that fucking guy, man. It's just, he's good looking and funny and cool and you're in a bad ass and you're like, God damn it, man. I wanted to hate you, but I just can't, dude. No, dude, he's got so much slagger somewhere else. Like he's just, nothing affects that dude. Nothing affects that fucking dude, man. He just doesn't get like, it's funny because Jason is the opposite. Jason's like super emotional and gets fucking crazy mad and Travis is just like, yeah, whatever.

And he seems to have fired up and he's competitive, right? Like in a competitive situation, but like for the most part, he does not give a fuck about anything. Like he just does not care. I've got two boys and they're each like that. One of them, super emotional, the other one isn't. The other one wants to kill people on a daily basis and he says fucked up shit. My wife's not here today, so I can say this story, but like we were playing soccer and football at the same time and I can only coach one of them due to my schedule. So I'm coaching soccer and I see this kid that he's guarding and his face just goes white and he whispered something to him. So at halftime when he comes over, I was like, hey, what did you say to that kid? And he just goes, he's seven. He just whispered in his ear, I see dead people. And I go, what? And I was like, I screen all the movies and all that other stuff and I'm like, hey dude, we've never seen the M Night Shyamalan movie together. Like Annie, and I was like, I've never,

like that's too scary for you. I go, where did you hear that? And he goes, yeah, it's in a Kendrick Lamar song. And I was like, okay, I was like, which one? And I was like, you know, we play it, but I play like the ones without the curse words in it. And sure enough, that's the top of, they not like us, which was like the biggest song in the world last year. And that first opening was that. And I go, man, as much as I could, I would love to punish you now, the fact that you thought of that and knew it would freak out the other team. That's fucking awesome, dude. God damn, I loved it. I loved it. But yeah, I played the head game, man. He's seven. But he wants to kill people. My older son is more emotional. And he thinks about things when he's out on the field versus just my other one, just a beast. He wants to just kill and pillage and all the other stuff at all day long. So yeah, I get it. Now's the boy in the show we get to the Drinking Bro of the week, which is someone who has inspired you. It helps you become the person you are today.

We never did that on Drinking Bro's sports, but you've been on this show before, which is like to give Drinking Bro the week too. You know, I'm gonna give it to a guy who's running for governor in Colorado here. His name's Victor Marx. Yes, you've been in a lot of his events. Yeah, we've gotten pretty close. And he's just an impressive guy. And he doesn't really let anything get to him. And he's got an uphill battle obviously here in Colorado. But he's been a really great mentor and a really good friend. And he's really just doing things for the right reasons. So I'd like to give it to Victor. That's awesome. Is he on November's election? Yeah, he'll be the Republican. He still has to win the Republican nomination. What is your primaries in Colorado? It's November. Okay, gotcha. Yeah, yeah. So he's got to win November. And then, you know, you know, you know, it's crazy. They said they have to raise 30 million just for the governor race. 100%.

Colorado is one of those states where if you lose it for like the Democratic party, that's a big fucking no-no. And so they'll spend a lot of money in Colorado. They're spending a shit ton down in Texas right now to try to get a new senator in and things like that. Which I don't think will happen now. Sadly, I think it'll happen in probably eight years just because of everybody from California that's moving here. But Colorado, you guys are fucking going through it, man. It feels like Colorado might be the next Minnesota. Dude, it's bad. It's really bad here. And... And that's kind of what my wife and I have talked about, you know, I beg her to like, let's get the hell out of here all the time, you know? But I feel hopeful with Victor because he's electable, right? He's electable. And I encourage anybody to go watch his story. He's got a Sean Ryan podcast too, okay? Go watch his story, man. He comes from a really rough childhood.

Then he was marine and then he started ministry and then he started going and he goes into like the worst places in the world in rescue's kids. Oh, man, that's amazing. With his own team, with no air support, anything. And just a fucking incredible guy, man. Just a great human. And you know, he just, he's really our only hope to win the state and take it back. Cause there's enough people that are getting sick of the shit and you can tell. Yep, but there's still like, I was downtown trying to get petitioned. We had to get signatures just to get him on the ballot, you know? Yeah, it's usually like 200,000 or something. Yeah, like that. Yeah. Yeah. And then I was down in, I was down in downtown Denver and like a bunch of people were coming in. You have to be a registered Republican to like sign your name, right? And there was a bunch of independence. And I'm like, well, why are you an independent? And they're like, because I'm afraid if I register as a Republican, I won't have a job. Yep. And that's the real thing, man.

It is, it is a real terrified to lose their job over their, over their political affiliation. And that's bullshit. I was not be afraid to be persecuted because of your fucking, whatever, I don't care what religion you are and I don't care what fucking political part of you're with. Like what is the character of the person? That's what matters. And are you good at the job? It shouldn't matter if you're a Republican or a Democrat. Like that is unbelievable to me. But then there was also a bunch of these independence coming in there and they were like, they don't know anything about Victor. So they're asking me questions and they're like, well, what is his stance on ice? And I'm like, I don't know. Are you an illegal immigrant? Are you here illegally? Then you don't have to shit the worry about. And they're like, well, my friends are all, my friends that are Hispanic are all really worried and scared. I'm like, are they here illegally? Yeah. Well, no. And I'm like, well, they don't have to shit the worry about. What the fuck are they worried about? Yeah, what do you care? Like it doesn't matter. And by the way, I was one of those people so I'm in California because of what I was doing in Hollywood. Dude, I left the box unchecked.

So I wasn't a Republican or Democrat or anything for that exact reason. I was afraid going through what I knew I was going through. And it wasn't nearly as bad as it is today as it was then. But I am hopeful, like I know I told you in the past, hey, move to Texas, like you'll be happier. But with all the people that are moving from California and everything else here, I don't know that you would be. I think your best shot is maybe to find the community that you love and then stay there and try to change it from the inside and go from there. I really do. So I know you love Colorado. I know you love Denver. And I know the people love you there because every time we go out for Christ Six, they're giving wolf shouts and all that other shit. So I think your best shot is to stay there and try to fix it like you're doing. Because obviously I see on Instagram every day giving speeches and all that other stuff trying to help these guys out. And I think that might be your best bet for real at the end of the day. Yeah, I think so too. Well, because there's an exodus happening. I think 12,000 tax payers moved out of the state last year.

That's a lot. Yep. That's a lot, man. And the housing market is fucking shit right now. And so property taxes are going up and property value is going down, which is like, that's a recipe for disaster. Yeah. It's just, they tried to fucking legalize prostitution. But you think that's a good idea? Like really, like we have all this other shit going on here and all this crime. And you're worried about fucking prostitution because they, like that's just going to encourage more human trafficking. You don't want to see whores underneath the bridge? Stand on the drive. Oh, yeah, I want my fucking daughter to see some. I mean, it's already bad enough. There's so many fucking weirdo trans people walking around. Like mentally ill people walking around the fucking streets wearing a dress with a full beard. Yeah, dude. Like, dude, like if you're going to be a chick at least try, like shave your fucking beard, maybe? Yeah, give it a go. Give it a real college try. Yeah, like I listen, I give respect, I listen, if you're trying real hard, I got respect for that.

Yeah. But if you're just some fucking psycho walking around in a fucking dress, like in a beard and armpit hair and hairy ass arms and legs, like, dude, get the fuck out of here. Like go do that shit at your house. Yeah, you can cosplay at your house, but leave it to the others, you know? It was the others. Well, I appreciate you being here. The show is called Pimp My Hunt.
