EP 3819: People-pleasing, pleases no one
About this episode
People pleasing looks like kindness, but it can quietly become one of the biggest obstacles to living a strong, authentic life.
In this episode of The Strong Life Project, Shaun O’Gorman explores why constantly trying to keep everyone happy often leaves everyone—including you—less satisfied. When you spend your life seeking approval, avoiding conflict and saying yes when you really mean no, you can gradually lose touch with your own values, boundaries and identity.
People pleasing isn’t simply about being a nice person. It can be driven by fear: fear of rejection, criticism, disappointing others, conflict or being seen as selfish. The problem is that continually prioritising other people’s expectations can create resentment, frustration, exhaustion and damaged relationships.
This is particularly important for leaders, parents, partners and people working in high-pressure environments. Strong leadership doesn’t mean making everyone happy. It means having the courage to make difficult decisions, communicate honestly, establish healthy boundaries and accept that not everyone will agree with you.
Shaun explains why saying no isn’t selfish, why discomfort is sometimes the price of self-respect, and how learning to tolerate other people’s disappointment can actually make your relationships stronger.
If you’re constantly worried about what other people think, regularly put your own needs last, or find yourself saying yes when you want to say no, this episode will challenge you to reconsider what being a good person actually means.
Real strength isn’t being liked by everyone.
It’s having the courage to live according to your values—even when someone else doesn’t like it.
