EP 3663 Only simple people think it's simple
About this episode
EP 3663 challenges the seductive lie that the best answers are always the simplest ones. It is easy to look at someone else's life, business, relationship, or mindset and throw out a clean one liner. Just work harder. Just be confident. Just leave. Just meditate. Just set boundaries. Those lines feel good because they reduce uncertainty and make you feel in control.
But simple people think it's simple because they have not done the hard work of seeing what is really going on. Real growth requires you to hold more than one truth at the same time. You can be grateful and still frustrated. Disciplined and still exhausted. Strong and still carrying pain. Committed and still unsure.
This episode is a call to stop hunting for shortcuts and start building capability. When your nervous system is overloaded, your thinking narrows. You want fast answers. You want someone to tell you what to do. But the life you actually want is built by learning how to slow down and think clearly under pressure. That means asking better questions. What is the pattern here? What are the trade-offs? What is the cost of staying the same? What part of this is mine to own? What is the next right move, not the perfect move?
If you want a calmer mind, stronger relationships, and better leadership, stop searching for simple fixes and start practicing simple behaviours consistently. Simple behaviours done well create complex outcomes. You do not need a dramatic reinvention. You need an honest assessment, a clear standard, and the courage to stay in the work long enough for it to change you.

Hey guys, welcome to today's podcast. Today's episode only simple people think it's simple. So I saw a video yesterday on social media from someone who was talking about in this instance, please mental health, and it just tweaked me my interest because I was like, does my healing when people have these simple solutions to very complex scenarios? This particular person had this super simple solution. I won't say what it is, I don't identify them, I'm certainly not trying to be mean to this person. I'm sure it was done with the right intention. And it's somebody who's been around the police for a long time. I just looked at this and thought, oh my god, the solution this person came up with just just ridiculously simple and ridiculously ineffective would never work if you had any idea of the nuance of how police think. And it just does my head in because it's this grandstanding
simplicity of, I have this fantastic idea that's going to solve the problem, but you like, and it's not. And actually the idea that had would make the problem worse because it would make cops far less willing to open up about mental health or whatever and blah, blah. And this isn't a police mental health conversation. It's about anything. People have these super simplistic ideas. And it's only simple people that think things are simple. For instance, look at the Ukraine war, Iran, look at Israel Gaza. You will notice I give no opinion on any of those things because I do not understand the nuance of it. I've not spent the time to go into the depth of understanding of both sides of the argument. I would literally just be sprouting out what I've heard on media social media wherever. And that would make me one of those simple people because there is no simple solution to any of those problems. I'm sure. So simple people suggest the simplicity of
these solutions. And it just is unhelpful. It's unhelpful for people on a global stage. It's unhelpful for people in the simplest personal interaction. So when I talk to people and I talk to people daily, multiple times a day I'll speak to different people about issues, dramas, difficulties, having their life, things. I want to buy some problems that they're trying to work out. And invariably I get great success with people because I talk to them about there are simple things you can do but they will certainly not be easy. But there is never a simple solution or an easy solution. So I'm thinking of someone at the moment who I'm helping with something that's gone on their life and I'm like, cool, we look at multiple different behavior changes, strategies, circumstances, things that they can do. That all added together and multiplied and compounded over time will bring a big change to their scenario. But it's multifactorial. There's multiple
different avenues, strategies, behaviors that they need to change. There's so many different things. There's no one size fits all simple solution. Just do X and Y as a result. That's so rarely the case in anything. Yet particularly on social media we have these people who are just spreading out these super, super simple scenarios. Well, I know what to do. Builders do this thing. The person I'm talking about. I watched the video. I was like, somebody sent it to me and goes, is this person lost their fucking mind? And as I watched it, I was like, oh, mate, it's insane. Because it's obviously not something they've thought through. It's not something that they have put any real, like they haven't steal me in the argument. They haven't straw me in the argument for themselves. They've done nothing. Then gone, this is a great idea. I've had a little fucking life on moment. I can't believe no one else has thought of this. I'm a fucking genius. Let me tell the word what a genius I am. This is how we solve this problem. And within, I don't know, the video was only a minute or too long. Within about 11 seconds, I was like, this is the worst idea in history. And I can think
of seven reasons why. And I don't claim to be an expert on police mental health. I'm how to do with it. I think no, a reasonable amount about it. But I'm like, oh, my God. And the problem is when you make a solution so simple in anything. For instance, if you're in a relationship and it's not working, and your simple solution is, you just need to treat me better. I go, what the fuck does that mean? Or whatever the case is. And we all go through these facing relationships. You need to listen to me more. I go, cool, what does that mean? Or I will say something to something like a partner, I'll have a guy, I just wish you were more supportive. And they go, cool, what's that mean? And then what I think supportive is, what do they think? What's the language behind it? What does that mean from the point of view of how we communicate? How does that work around time? What does it do with other priorities? Like, it's not simple. You need to be more supportive. What's that mean? Does that mean I need to, like, I don't know, does that mean I need to talk to you
more? Does that mean I need to spend more time? Does it mean that you want me to, do you mean I need to be more supportive with I walk around and I carry your body weight because you literally want me to support you. What's supportive of me? Is it physical, mental, emotional, and what is it? Like, these are the things that I think the simplicity of these comments we make about particular things. We just need to do blah. And this is what I certainly, I can hear you're sorry, but I don't know where they are. I certainly am very, very cautious of using any example that is, here they tell me the forest, using any simple example from, you know, politics or global conflicts. But let's just say, for instance, there are around conflict with, you know, Israel and the US and bombing Iran. There will be people on one side of the fence that will say, well, we just need to bomb Iran so they don't have a nuclear weapon. Cool. There'll be people on the other side of the fence that go, well, they didn't have a weapon, so we got to stop bombing them. And they go, both of those are so simple. And there's no way in the world you're, I can understand whether the intel is correct,
what the nuance of it is, what's a complexity of the situation, who's in charge, who's in charge, is it really, is it the, you know, the IRGC, is it in the Iranian regime? Is it, you know, out-of-state actors that are using Iran as a proxy for terrorism? Like, I don't fucking know. All of that stuff I've heard on different podcasts and different things, I understand a little bit about it, but I don't really know what it means. And I guess I know more about it than probably 90% of people who have a simple view of do X or do Y. You know, Y, because I heard it on fucking TikTok or whatever, like I talked about yesterday with my daughter. And it's just hilarious to me that we all have this propensity to believe we are geniuses. I think I'm a dumbass. I don't think I'm a smart person. I think the more I learn the dumber I realize I am. And I think that's a trap for most people, that I try to learn. You think instead of realize how freaking stupid that. And that's, you know, a judgmental thing to say. And I think probably pretty accurate, as I spend more time in this planet talking to different people. Only simple people think anything is simple. Nothing is simple.
If I look at the circumstances in my own life with relationships, things that I haven't worked out, things that have been difficult, none of it has been simple. People will give me simple solutions. Why don't you just do Blah? I go, because of about 11 other things that that won't help. And now I'm the bag of this people. Good on them for suggesting something. But we all think we have great ideas in that we're geniuses. And we all look at the first three millimeters of depth of a problem and go, I know what to do. And we give our great advice to someone else and then realize a period of time later, oh fuck, I haven't actually got a clue. And my simple solution is simple not only in its structure, but simple, it makes me simple in my thought process that it could be an answer. Like it's just so difficult. And the only reason I made this is because I just see this so often that people try to give the simple brilliant, you know, advice or the simple brilliant beliefs or whatever it is to people and I'm like,
it isn't simple. It's not easy. It's so complex. No one really understands how we do the best thing with some of these things. And then, everybody's like, I don't want to do it. Just do this thing. And I'm like, it doesn't help. It doesn't help me. It doesn't help anyone. Because ultimately, then we're stuck in this place in a life where we believe the situation should be a really simple solution. And it's just not. And then we apply all of this ridiculously simple, you know, logic to it. Well, this is why and then people get very tribal about it. They never know. He's about it. Instead of going, hey, this situation is extremely complex. How do we come up with a really easily executable plan that is strategically solid that takes time and nuance and understanding that this is not an easy thing. Because everybody wants instantaneous solutions because we want everything instantaneous these days. Simple people believe in simple solutions. But they're never real. Talk to you tomorrow.
