acast.com Welcome to the Poisoners Cabinet, I'm Shanay. Well, I am Nick. And this is your weekly podcast exploring the lives of the great Poisoners, Macabre murders and captivating crimes from across the centuries and creating curious cocktails inspired by the tales of Britelle. And it's episode 287. Rea, rea, rea, rea. Rea, rea, rea, rea, rea, rea, rea, rea, rea, rea. How are you, Nick? I'm fine. You're good. You know, I said, can't be. Can't be, can't be. Click that's when. Great thing you're all energized up from your blending. Had a blending. He's got gains, man. So heavy. All the stuff we have been discussing in After Dark, I'll warm up chat. But that's good. Any Poisoners this week, have you been poisoning yourself with all the blending?
That means so much health. So much terrifying amount of health. If you've just been blending the Snickers. Blending makes things healthy. I've told you. Liquid form, delicious. Liquid form, exactly. Wasn't that a diet in the fricking 80s? Probably. It was. Blend it, and it's fine. It was just the liquid diet, everything is liquid. It's exactly the fewer calories. You can eat exactly what you need, but just blend it, and it chops the calories away. Blend it. It's good. There you go. Suppy, Suppy goodness. Do you do the eat it, but the spoon or just with a lovely card jelly glass? Knock it back. Nice, excellent. How is that working out for you? I'm so far-filling it. Everything all right internally as well. I'm worried, but so, so far. You stay over there. Yeah. So far, so good, so far, so good. Oh, good. Well, speaking of blending everything inside, but for health reasons, including your family, I think it's time for us to thank our delicious Patreon subscribers. Yes, indeed. This week, we must say thank you very much to ISIS Lima,
to Jillian, to Christina Salah, and to Helen Eilit. Thank you, sexy, sexy Patreon subscribers. We had fun on Patreon this week. Didn't we, Nick? Yes, we went through an island. Err, Eilit. We went to the Galapagos Islands. Galapagos Islands. What are you doing? I'm stretching. I had a crampiness in my leg. Is it all right? No, it's fine. No, it's stretched. We sometimes just get terrible leg cramp when we're doing this. It's probably because we can talk in. No, I've been doing all sorts of leg struts, my legs. Since we started doing the podcast on the sofas, rather than at the table. Yeah, you said a table in a very organized, efficient way. Nice, good for the back and everything. Now we're just like curled up, like, soon up, just be pajamas and blackers. Exactly, I'm going to go do this one bed soon. Some people do. Yeah, I think I could probably get this to attach this to the headboard. Yeah, but we do recording person, Nick. So where am I? We're in bed. Yeah, I'm we're pajamas. Oh, can I get on the bed as well? No, I don't want to get on your bed. Your bed is a rock. Well, you're not going to be sleeping on it. You're not going to be sleeping on it. I have to sit on it and it won't be comfy. They're fine.
They're no, see? I'm sure they are getting down. I'll get you a rocking chair for the end of the bed. Nick, this is setting up a weird, weird, precedence wheeler. You'll be in the bed. I'll be in the rocking chair. Go to sleep now, Nick. But we had fun on, on Patreon this week. We went to the Galapagos Islands. So many creatures and species and one of all things, but also mystery. Yes, that's crazy people and possible murder. That was a short shot, but amazing story. Yes. And that did send me down a rabbit hole. I know there's films about it and everything. Yes, I would watch them. Yes, Galapagos affair. Who would have thought such a place with such rocks and such blue footed in boobies? Not rocks. But there's a lot of rocks. There's a lot of rocks there. On the Galapagos Islands. There's a lot of rocks on most islands. Is it a nice luxurious island? I don't think it's a luxurious island. The picture I use on the episode. It's all cany, so I think it's quite. It's got nice blue seas. Yes, lots of lovely seas, because it's in the middle of a lovely, in the Pacific. So lots of, yes.
It's a lot of nice. But the land. No, I don't think it's sort of like tropical island. Type thing. No, not white sand. I don't think it's palm trees and sandy beaches. No, just rocks. Just rocks. And it's just plainly rocks. And and and and and various birds. Lots of birds. Just Darwin's ghost hopping around the place going, I came here on a beagle. Yes. He did. Riding a beagle. That was one of his favorite things. That's why they named the ship after it. Yes. And since he wouldn't stop riding these. He's just constantly doing laps around the boat. If you want to know what the hell we're talking about, please do consider joining us. I don't know what the hell we're talking about. Well, why don't you join us, Nick? Well, Nick, are you ready? Yes. You drink cocktails and talk about poison. Yes. Or are we get drinking poison? Talk about ourselves. Yes. Should we have the first one? Yes. Whatever's going to be quickest. I've got TV to watch. What do you mean you got TV to watch? I was realised. I just remembered. You've just remembered this TV in the wild. I just remembered. No, HBO Max is now on now TV. So there's a little bit of you. OK. And I want to watch the pit. What is happening? What HBO the pit wants? Yeah. And I want to watch it. So I can watch that. What is the pit? What's the pit? It's a big thing. It's a big, it's a big, it's a big medical drama. Oh, Jesus. And it's got like all the, all the awards. And it's meant to be like the best thing in since like house or something like that. It's going to be amazing. It's got no a thing in it again. What? It's got nowhere in it. It's got a big boat. No. Medical procedure on Noah's Ark. On Noah's Ark. That's what I will watch. Yeah. That's what I will. The haulers are a pit. No, we're sorry about that. I'm going to take it out on a pit and it's like. Or is it the pit is in the name of the place? Like they said like in an ER sort of room. So no one gets thrown in a pit? No, I believe no one gets thrown in a pit. Oh, I don't want to watch it. So yeah, I want to watch that. So let's go with it.
Stop this talking. Come on. I want to write Nick. You do realize that that's a streaming platform. It's not going to be on and then you can't ever see it again. I want you now. No, I'm taking away your streaming privileges. I can do it. But the power of my mind. Well, let's go with the first one. Hooray, hooray, hooray. It is my story this week and we can't, we can't, we can't. Possibly have a story. Without a cocktail in hand. As you know, dear listeners, every week we choose a secret ingredient that is inspired by the tale that we tell. And it will flavor our cocktail of the week. Nick, this week's secret ingredient is... The gallows. The gallows, yes. The gallows. I am shocked we have not used this before. Yeah, probably because I mean, cocktails about my hanging people are slightly few of arbitrary, and that's what we said. I wouldn't have thought so. I mean, it's a very, it's a thing. I mean, it certainly is a thing, yeah. The gallows, yeah. I mean, I didn't really think much about the cocktail. I was just like, oh, we haven't really talked about that. You don't know. Don't concern yourself how easy it is. And I may regret using the gallows because it does figure in this story, obviously.
But then I thought it was, I just, maybe I could have used something else, but I've done it now. So, yeah. Do we have vodka as in this? Is that a feature a lot in this story as well? It is all about the invention of vodka. There's various cheeses and lovely fruits and mixes tonic water. It's like, it is in it a lot. You'll probably pick out loads of stuff. I didn't even look after. I just went with canelos and I wrote it today. I was like, oh, fuck, there's a lot in here. But I went with gallows. Gallows. Gallows, as you're ingredient in your inspiration. Yes. I want to have you come up with. We're going to have. Okay. Hangman's noose. Ooh, there you go. Perfect. Sorry, that exists. It does. I had to search for it. You had to type it in and wait for two seconds. Shut up. Was it on page one of Google? Shut up. There we are. There's a hole. Oh, yeah. That's scrolling. Oh, I did me my finger. Wonderful. Well, I think it is high time for us to walk solemnly in with great reputation
into the poisonous cabinet kitchen and shake up a storm. So we'll see you in a minute. We'll see you in a minute. And we're back. Hello. Shonik. Yes. The hangman's noose. Hangman's noose. Hangman's noose. It's that, don't know why I said like that. Yes. Hangman's noose. Hangman's noose. It's brownish. Brown, brown has a brown. It's all the color. Oh, yeah. It's kind of an ambery. Amber? Is it amber? Blanky brown. Brown, fine. You feel like this is a brown drink, too. Okay. Well, that doesn't bowed well. Do you feel good about this one? I'm curious. Curious. Oh, that's always interesting. Okay. Well, Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Okay. Have some flavours. It has some flavours. Yeah. It is sweet. Yes. For a brown drink, that is a surprise for me. It is sweet. Bourbon. Yes.
The bourbon. The bourbon. The bourbon. Right. What else is in this? That is sugary. There is something sugary in that. Sugar syrup? No. Some sort of sugary liqueur. Probably, I would say it's relatively sugary, yes. Okay. But it'll liqueur rather than another. Yes, it's not like a syrup. It's not a syrup or anything. Okay. Is there a vermouth in this? There is a vermouth in this. Red vermouth? There's a red vermouth. Oh, for the amary colour. Okay. So we've got the makings of a red hook. Yep. Bourbon. Marish. Marish. No, no, no, no, no. Okay. Bourbon and red vermouth. How many more? One more. One, just the one? Just the one actually. Just the one actually. Breathe. Is it nutty? There, no. Would you be near, no? I mean. A nut has been near it. One's. A nut is involved. Yeah, no. It's a, it's a bushel. What? I could die from an allergy from it. What? Are you allergic to nuts? No. That's all right, though. It's fruity? Floral? Yeah, no. Jesus. Twiggy?
What is wrong with you? What? It could be considered all of these things. All nutty, twiggy, floral, fucking fruity. So it's got a million and one things that Benedictine. No. The, like, a Monty, not a Monty Negra? No, no, no, no. A strager or a drum buie? Or a... Why, no, no, no, no, no, no. No, no, no, no, no. Blended many flavours. Oh my God. No, no, no, no, no. Did not say it was a blend of many flavours. So it could be considered all of those things, but they're not. Yes. Is it lies, name? Oh, swear to God. He just does this to fuck with me these days. Yeah, pretty much. That's my main goal in all of this. So you can consider it fruity, floral, nutty, fucking twiggy. I would say so. I'm going to punch you. Have I got any chance of getting this? I think so. Well. No, no, no, no, no. Do you have every confidence? Do you? Because you've given me all of the clues. Possible. Oh, we had it before. Yes. Cush answer. No. Run. No.
Is it a liqueur? Yes. It is not a base spirit. Not a base spirit. Right, a liqueur. Well, we're getting somewhere. It's not a nut one. So, hmm, I need to stop talking. I need to think. I need to think and not speak. The Flula Vernon. No. It's always that, to those. Soos. No. No, that's not sugary. That's routine. With the fucking not maraschino, elder flower. No. Am I ever going to get this? Give me a hint. Because give me a better hint than all of the things. Oh, my God. Something cryptic. Something gross. I want to puzzle clearly. Yeah. This isn't enough of a puzzle for you. This is two vague. Two vague. This is two vague. Okay, forget the, forget the floral. No floral. Right. Do you say floral? I don't know. Yeah, thank God that's out of the mix. Yes, forget the floral. Right. I mean, yes. How many syllables does the name have? Oh, I thought you were going to sound it out there. It's going to get you. Yes.
Go reencharges. Is it greencharges? No, Jesus. Oh. I thought he's not that stupid. How many syllables does he have? Kind of counting on his hand. Four. Four. Four. Four. Four. Four. Four. Four. Four. No, it does nothing for me. Or two. What? Depends if you want the long version of the name. Oh, God. Or the more succinct version of the name. The good thing is, is that I know it's two syllables or four syllables and it's nutty, twiggy, floral, fruit. Is that any of those? It's not floral, right? Oh, they've got the floral out of it. They've got the floral. They've got the floral. That has been cast out of the household because now I'm on much more even keel. I feel like I need to give up on I don't want to. I don't know how you haven't got this. Oh. So I've never been this angry. Mine is a wine. No. How would that be twiggy nutty? I don't know, Nick. I don't know if you know what this is. Twiggy nutty. It's not drambu-y.
It is not run. Okay, forget the twiggy. Forget the twiggy. Nutty. Go, but not. But savoury? Well, it's quite sweet. As you said, it seems like it's quite sweet. Sugar. Just sugar cake. No, it's just lumps of sugar. Honey. No. Honey, dates, cake, vanilla, vanilla, vanilla cake. No, it's cake. We have a cake. I'm gonna go ahead and eat it. Cake. Vanilla herbs. I think, okay. Go think, think, cake. Oh. Oh, think, think, cake. Potentially, think, cake. Creak, cacao. Yes. Ah! Ah! I did it. Oh my god. The nutty twiggy. I will knock all this shit over here. That's why it's okay. Fine. Forget the twiggy. So what? Creme de cacao. Cacao de blonk. De blonk de blonk de white cacao. Lovely. Wonderful. Cacao. Cacao is a journey.
Cacao is a journey. Cacao is a journey. Cacao is a journey. Oh, sorry. With fruity and floral in there as well. Oh, good. Cacao. Cacao. Two. Four. Four. Jesus. Do you like it? It's all right. It's all right. It's all right. It's drinkable. Oh, no, definitely. Definitely finish that. I'm not getting huge amount of chocolate. It's just the sweetness. That's the thing. It's not very chocolatey, which you would hope to have. Yeah. It's just very sweet with it. That's what the recipe originally called for. But this is one of Nixon's favorite. It called for this. So I put it afterwards. It called for a dark chocolate. Look here. It's a different type of chocolate or cream or whatever. And I just had the more traditional kind of cow. So it may be that one is we more intensely chocolatey potentially. You should order some of that. So yes, yes, so there is that sort of slight substitution for a one chocolate for a different type of chocolate. Well, I like the different sort of thing. I think I can imagine that. So yes, maybe that'd be less sweet. And more yes, cacao-ish.
Well, that was a journey that way we talked. Yeah, I mean, you used it. Everyone must have milked that, so I broke the bet. Nicked. She bruises like that. Well, with the hangman's news firmly in hand, which is a disturbing image. As we walk down the street, hello, anybody? No, don't run. We're going for the news. Would you like a news? No, it's a lovely cocktail. What's it in it?
You'll never guess. That's what you have between you. I'm putting that on your headstone when I kill you. Would you like a story, Nick? Go on, man. Yay! So this story, it's a story. It's a story where I thought, oh, it's going to have lots of things in there. It was explained. It was weird. It's just a good old fashioned murdery story. OK, it is. And it does have a moment in the gallows. As I said, I thought, yes, it does. It does, and we have to wait for it. But it's quite striking, in a way. If you find other ingredients during this episode, feel free to shout them out. Because I feel like I went for the first thing I saw, and that'll do. We're off to the Vodka Islands. They are resplendent. Anyway, to the story. To the story. To the story. What could happen? Well, there's a lot of shit that happens apart from her final demise, lovely.
So this is the story of Eva Duggan. Ooh. Eva Duggan. She was born, at some point. She was born. Well, she was born, we think, maybe June, some time in June, in 1878. Nice. We believe in Salisbury, Missouri. Missouri. And Natmach is known about her childhood, surprisingly little. She's a woman with various rumours about her, and then chunks of her past are missing. She's a woman with no past. Yes. There are little bits peppered through where you go, that's fabulous. And also, oh, we need more information on that, because people have drawn conclusions, or basically went, well, it was probably that, but never mind. One thing that we know is that she wasn't a woman who liked to stay in her place, but it's still for very long. She traveled. One source, I say source, it was a weird history blog website that someone has put together. I'm not going to say the name of the blog, because it's a good one, but it's also, this is coming from your mind. And nowhere else, I fear. It said, somehow, she managed to survive a hard,
scrabble childhood to become an adult with few skills, and even fewer expectations. That's hard. I know. We don't know that. She could have been, had great hopes for the future. She could have. I'm going to be president one day. She could have dreamt of being president one day. Well, I think she dreamt of doing certain things, but that's what we call padding. So we assume hard, super bit. Hard, super bit, from her background. But we next meet her when she's 16, and she is married to a man, married to a man. They were going to have two children together, or she already had two children, but she has two children. She has two children. She has two children, and she meets this man, settles down, married, wonderful. Oh, he didn't like being married for long. He abandons them, leaves the family in the lurch, fleeing for the hills, the family are poor, and they are desperate. So yes, this being left alone. This is what we know happens to that husband. He runs away. He runs away. She will end up moving to what was then known as a Laskin Territory. During the Klondike Gold Rush, yay, late 18, 90s,
everyone's in there. Sometimes when you read other reports of this woman, people pad out a lot in the Klondike Gold Rush, and we like this as nothing to do with that story. We were in massive bids. She had a massive beard. She had a massive beard. I hear this gold, if you have a massive beard. Massive beard, I had a massive beard. To pad the gold. Exactly. How else are you going to do this? Exactly. You need the beard for the gold strength. It's a fact. It's how this thing works. This is the tiniest footnote in our life. A lot of gold rush. Huh? The TV program. Oh, what? The whole Discovery TV series. Oh, God. And there's been 400 seasons. Right. It's called Gold Rush. And they follow a load of crazy miners and stuff as they're all trying to dig for gold. What? Shoot it. What? I love that gag. The following miners are it. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. It's enough of that now. Sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt you. Fascinating. You were the president. About the thing on TV. About there's a fun thing on TV. And you watch crazy people. And they've all got really big bids. They've got big bids. And they've got much gold. And they've got lots of gold.
Great. Well, you're doing a great job of padding this. So with that, as much as everyone else has, she's in the background going, where's everyone keep talking about this gold rush? I just moved here for the air. Yes. She moves to that area. And she has obviously got the two children. And I will say, the kids happened. Nothing else is known of them. Sometimes they are there. Sometimes they're not. We just assume they're fine. They're not panning for gold. Exactly. They're panning for gold. They probably go on to live happy lives until they were eaten by a bear while panning for gold. It was probably fun. The bear was panning for gold. Yeah. And the children were having a cross the bear. Yeah, it's a territory. Yeah, fair enough. Exactly. The bear's like my gold. Yeah, he needs that to buy shoes. Famously bears need shoes. They need shoes. They do need shoes. So, well, they're off. When she moves into this area, she starts doing various jobs. Most fabulously, she works as a cabaret singer. Nice. She is a cabaret singer, also, which is sort of shoved in there as well. She's a cabaret singer and sex worker. And a sex worker to provide for the family and for herself.
Both professions. And for the many gold miners. For the men. OK, there's that, maybe. Both professions require her to be charming and have a way with men. Yes. Obviously, you don't want to be not charming when you're a cabaret singer, or a sex worker, to be fair, you wouldn't get very charming. I don't have a color, I don't know. All of that bothers. No. You don't have to be charming. You do have to be a bit. You don't want to know. Well, I mean, I know people make money from that now. I've been really horrible. I know there's much in them really horrible cabaret singers unless that's a particular kind of act. Because of these unique cabaret singers. Screaming down the microphone. Yeah. When she gets older, because obviously this is just a bit of her youth, but she ages rapidly in this story because we get to her in sort of a middle age. And someone said of her, she had the appearance of being good-looking when younger. Hosh? Hosh. She looks like she was a real looker a few years ago. She looks like she's at a hard line. What we know about her final years could lead us to assume that she was a resourceful woman, making her own costumes and her outfits.
That's nice. She was on the stage and she was sort of getting new Hannah get a dollar out of someone, if she did, in order to make her money stretch. It's not that she's a con artist necessarily. At this point, the accounts of her is that she's making her way. When she lives, though, in Dawson City in the Yukon Territory, she reportedly calls herself Claude Fingert Kitty. Nice. Now, we don't know what that is connection with. I don't know if that's her name of her Cabaret Act. Sex worker or just her on the streets. Claude Fingert Kitty stealing maybe doing stuff or making lovely costumes or providing services, there you are. Love that name, apparently, she did. So over the years with her singing and entertaining, she met plenty of suitors. And we jump to, well, we really know her. We know either in her late 40s, early 50s. During her life, she is said to have married five times. Nice. She has had five husbands. And all of them have disappeared.
Mysteriously disappeared. Some reports have it that they have abandoned her, left her, others in massive, massive capital letters go missing, missing. Let's go, please, go, binding. Yeah, ask her and all those things as it is. Well, she's locked in sort of place. Bopped around the place, she's met people and maybe they have just let them in the lurch. Yes, yes, but there's this implication that she had many a husband, but no one really knows what happened to them. Ooh, dear, no, but no, no, but he knows. There's enough records, but nothing of what happened to the men. So, you know, you would think people'd look into it more, but then they were very happy with just that. Yeah. She had five husbands and they were all vanished. But we come to the 1920s and she's had her run of husbands and jobs and disappearances. And she's traveled around and she's come back to the US and she's come to Arizona. And she's going to take on a new role, maybe her least convincing reinvention as she's going to be a housekeeper. Oh, that seems like quite a dramatic departure from her previous life. People need housekeepers.
Well, this is very true. And at a certain age, you go, I don't want to be out there dancing all night. Exactly. I need a more sedate way of life. Well, I would, oh, it's very sad to give up the stage, but there's not a lot of demand the older you get. But housekeeping, yeah, you have to be old to be a housekeeper. Do you? Well, I think traditionally, and you need a big bunch of keys. You need what, the strength to carry the big bunch of keys and to look weathered. Yes. Yeah. Yeah, dead behind the eyes. Sort of stand in a corner and just go, you're not welcome here at Mandeling. Exactly. Yeah, there we go. I love it. She's wandering around and she's become a housekeeper in 1927. She ends up taking a job for a very wealthy, old chicken rancher, named Andrew J. Mathis. Yeah, she ends up working for him. He has his ranch in Pima County, and he has made a lot of money from poultry. It's a lot of money in chickens. A lot of money in chickens and his livestock. Oh, he's done very well. And he is known as reclusive. He is to contancress.
He is demanding. He's tight-fisted and mean. Oh, best. That's how this is a life. And it gets worse. Oh, OK. In various sources about either, there was a link that I clicked on and just the internet exploded where I went, oh, good Lord. So Andrew Mathis, and again, in a lot of the reports about him, do not mention this, that they say he was mean to a core, mean to the, you know, absolutely to the ground up, and was horrible and tight-fisted, and it was an awful working environment for her. They clashed and they butted heads. This is the whole thing about their working together. He's a horrible man because he had previously been convicted and served seven years in jail for his part in a truly horrific crime. And I'm going to share bits of with you. And here we go. You go, go, go, go, Jesus. He was involved in the lynching of two Native American teenagers in Oklahoma. Oh, Christ. Yeah. And this is, this has an entire entry on Wikipedia. This was a case known as the Seminole Burning
and Seminole of Native American People. In 1898, apparently, and this is, yep, guys, I'm going to tell you what I'm going to be as diplomatic as I can, there was in Oklahoma, apparently a woman was murdered allegedly by a Native American man. It was a robbery gone wrong. That this woman was at home with her children. Her husband was out. Someone came to the house looking to rob them. The woman was killed in trying to defend her homestead. The man tried to rob the place and he went. All they knew was that he had a scar across his face. And at this point, as soon as they found out what had happened, the husband gathered a mob of white men together and including Mathis. And they went marauding around the place to find the perpetrators, harassing beating people, doing mock lynchings of anyone they could find. They settled on two teenagers, two Native American teenagers, deciding they were guilty. These teenagers, one of them couldn't speak English. They just decided that they were guilty, harassing them
torturing them and they then started telling all stories and bellishing it that they had assaulted the woman, that they had assaulted her after she had died, that they were doing all sorts of rituals or stuff like that. And these two teenagers were burned alive. Christ. Yeah, so this is the double light. But I know, I know. But it's shocking this case. And again, there's a lot of detail about what happened. In their detail, I'm not going to go into on this show of literally the sight of what happened in terms of detail of the words boiling brains. OK. Oh, it's a start phrase I ever particularly needed here. No, no, no. I was happy now. I was happy. I know, I know. But yeah, Mathis, this is... So in case you just feel any sympathy for this moment. And not anymore, no. No, there we go. Mathis, now, charges were brought. There was obviously a big concerted effort to find the people responsible for it. What would hope? As you can imagine, it was a complicated process
and it was not easy, because a lot of things were ignored, a lot of things were thrown out. You can imagine what would happen. Let's pursue all these white men for killing two Native Americans. 200 men, six men were convicted, charges were brought against them. Six men out of the 200. And one of them was Andrew Mathis. He was jailed. He was the one who lit the fire. I said, he must have been heavily involved, not just standing around in the background sort of thing. He must have been one of the key people. He lit the fire. There it is. While in prison, side note, Mathis lost four fingers on his right hand during an accident in the woodworking department. OK. Good. Yeah, I know, what is the name? And he was released from prison in 1906. So we can agree he's awful. Not a pleasant man. No, we'll go with that. A pleasant man, and his time in jail has not softened him at all, has not made him a nice, lovely, fluffy man. So on his farm, on his ranch, he is there, either comes to work, and they butt heads constantly. Yeah. She's not the sort of woman to take a lot of crap from him,
but they're working together and it's a few weeks, really, that she is there. And he is always demanding more and more and more from the housekeeper, from what people can see from the outside. Everyone knows that Mathis is cheap, that he won't give an inch, won't give her the proper materials to work, is always demanding make her stretch things as far as they can go and shouting at her about not doing a proper job and criticizing her constantly lamenting everyone who comes to work on his ranch. He is known to be completely reclusive apart from when he comes into town and bitches to everyone about how awful his life is and how everyone's terrible and everyone's pretty bloody. Oh, he sounds absolutely delight. Yeah, quite, quite the delight, quite the delight. He apparently fired her multiple times. She goes, shut up, you old man. I'm just gonna keep working, yeah, sure you'll fire me. But then Mathis apparently went to town at one point or certainly two people outside of his ranch complaining, shouting and raving, she's poisoning him. She is poisoning him, he's so sick. He's so ill, she's been at the rough on rats.
I won't say it. But she's poisoned, his rabbits stew. No, my God. I think we've already had rabbits as an ingredient. I don't think we've had stew. We've probably not had stew, but I thought that would be worse somehow. Potentially, yes. We could have just made a lovely stew. We could have just had a stew or a glass. And you need to rebuild it. You could have blended a stew for us. Yes. No, she poisoned the rabbits too. Not the rabbits too. Not the rabbits too. So he tells people, doctor does come out to see him apparently because he is ill, oh God, I'm so sick. And people ask him, did you? And he goes, no, I didn't poison the rabbits too. I didn't need to because he's got food poisoning because that was bad rabbit meat. Because it's been there for six months and he won't throw it out. Literally that. He has the meat. She apparently the rabbit meat had boils on it. And he went just cut around it, just scrapes the mold off. Scrape the infection off that.
Put it in, I know. Put it in the pot and serve it up. And she's like, absolutely, have her go, mate. Crack on me, yeah. And he eats it, pustules and all. And he gets food poisoning. He gets food poisoning and the doctor's like, yeah, you've got food poisoning, please don't call me. So yes, this apparently is the big forrury that happens of him claiming she's poisoning him when he is just too cheap to waste a scrap of meat, even if it's rancid in the household. So people really pay no heed to him. They know him and they know he's a successful rancher. And obviously he makes a lot of money and he's successful. But no one likes him is the impression that you get. So they keep away from him. But then in January 1927, Mathis probably fires her properly. That is, this is it, you're out, you're out. I'm sick of you and your rabbits and your pussy rabbits get out and you can go to hell and either leaves and neither leaves. But it's around the 27th of January that Mathis disappears. There's no sign of him for several days.
People are like, well, we normally would have business dealings with him and this sort of disappearances that there would be comeings in going around the ranch, but he's not seen. He's not seen. And there is someone who calls to the ranch. And they say a friend of his, not probably someone who just, he has no friends. But they come to the ranch and they see at this occasion of one eyewitness says Eva is there. She's got a young man with her. Sort of, she's packing up Mathis's car, his old Dodge car. The sort of clearing out and sort of putting stuff in there. And this man, Jack, the person doesn't recognize, they're loading up and she's saying, well, he said I could use the car so I can travel. Because he's kicked me out, but, you know, Jack's going to give me a lift. And then he's going to bring the car back. So we're just putting everything in there. Okay, okay. And this person goes away having seen them but doesn't really ask many questions. They notice they haven't seen Mathis around, but the livestock are all still there. And then there's also talk that, that Eva has been to the neighbours
and in town sort of selling bits of items from the house offering, you know, furniture or little bits and pieces, even some of the chickens. And the chickens from the poultry farm just sort of like flinging those over the fence and going, oh, did she get a cow? A cow? And I think some people bought them going, okay, fine. So no, no, Mathis is fine. He just wants me to sell these. Get rid of you bit to pace us. But soon Eva is gone. She has fled the scene. Yeah. Taken car as well. So the car's off on this joyride. So his car is gone and Mathis is gone. And then when people go to the house, some of the chickens are gone. Well, there's still livestock there. Some of the chickens are gone. And the house, there's weird stuff because his cash box has gone as well. But some of his possessions are there because those who know Mathis are going, look, this is weird enough. So maybe we need to get the sheriff involved as well. When they go up there, they notice no one is on this farm. No one's been here for a few days. The animals are still here. And this is not about a duty of care you would hope to look after them.
This is your livelihood. Well, yeah, absolutely. You can't leave the chickens and the cows and all the livestock out here without feed, without stuff because then, yeah, you're going to lose money. The house is deserted. But they do find Mathis' ear trumpet. OK. This is how contanker is this man is. You can imagine him with a full-on ear trumpet. Hey, that's in the house. He wouldn't go anywhere without that ear trumpet. He wants to hear the gossip, but he wants to yell a lot. Through it? That's not how it works. But they find the ear trumpet. So there's items that are missing and stuff that he would never be without as well. There's talk that there's a wrench that's found that's got weird stains on it. A covering of the car also has stains on it, but they can't find all of his belongings and stuff's in a state of disarray. So the sheriff concludes, something is up here. Yes. There's a mystery. We don't have a body, so we don't know where Mathis is. But he is left under very suspicious circumstances
and Eva has fled. So what has she got to say about this? We need to find her. And they think, well, okay, well, we can't bring her back on charges of murder because we have no body and disappearance kidnapping. That's not a thing. Cars gone. So we're going to get her on car theft. Car theft. That's what we're going to do. The authorities try to track her down. They again have little to go on. But they find that the car has been sold in Kansas City for $600. And the woman who sold it claimed that she was the wife of the owner, Andrew Mathis, that she was selling on behalf of a husband. So over the course, not too long it takes them to track her down. She's eventually found in white planes in New York and she's working there as a nurse. And she is found, she's arrested and she is convicted of car theft. She is brought back and right, you have stolen this car. You have to answer to it. They ask her, what's happened to Mathis? No idea. Nothing. Don't know. OK, I've got the car.
And she's taken before the course. She is convicted of the car theft. And she has sentenced to a minimum of three years up to six. She is telling them that the car was a gift. Mathis loved her. He loved her so much. Take the car and go on your way. I mean, he didn't love anyone. Yeah, no, no. So that's how I'd like him. So now, well, Eva's in jail for car theft. OK, you know, maybe she had a hand of Mathis disappearance but we don't know where he is. So I guess we'll take this. You maybe just wandered off somewhere. People sort of just let it go. Yeah. Until nine months later. Oh. Someone takes a little camping trip near the old chicken ranch. Oh. And they find something while putting up the tent. How delightful. And I think that's time for a drink. I think it's something to use. Over 90 of the top 100 U.S. accounting firms trust Bill to simplify and secure Bill Pay.

Nick, we have our drinks. We do. Oh, the back of the ranch. And it's a big, big property. Yeah. So it's very sizable. Yeah, very sizable. And a man named Nash has been traveling in the area, just happened to be traveling in the area. I mean, what's the chance? You're going to put your tent back. What are the chances? I mean, yeah, a massive old ranch. But it happened. And you put your tent peg through someone's buried skull or wherever. The man is camping for the night. He is on the edge of the property. He decides he's going to set up camp because the weather is turned apparently.
And he finds some loose ground. He's like, that's great to put up my tent peg. Put it in the ground straight through some bones. Yeah. Through a foot, apparently, a little foot. What is the odds? I was like, I'm going to call the sheriff. I'm going to pack up my tent. I never go camping again. Another thing against camping. Yes, exactly. It's a luxury hotel. That's why hotels. There are much less trials of dead things. So the calls the sheriff out, obviously, they found a human foot. A human foot there. It's not just an animal. It was a chicken foot. It was a chicken foot. Not quite a panic, so I feel. He says, this chicken's everywhere around here. Would you stop calling us? How have you never seen animals? The sheriff has called out. They dig into the ground and they find a full human skeleton. Their skeletal remains uncovered at the edge of Mathis' ranch. So right on the edge of his property, which would be a fair distance from the house, they find this full human skeleton and they are positive that it's Andrew Mathis.
Yeah, who else is it going to be? The appearance of it based on the clothes, the tuffs of the hair, and it seems that he's died from blunt force trauma to the head. Yeah. No poisoning for him. Nair. So the sheriff is like, great, we now we have a body. Now we have a body. Definitely foul play, I think. Fowl play has played. Been in play about, it's been there. It's totally happened. Totally played. Totally played. Now we need to pin this on either. Oh, we need to get evidence because all they've got though is a skeleton in the ground. Yeah. How did it get there? Who knows? Who knows? Let's ask Eva. We've got her in jail, so we can ask her. And apparently, the sheriff and his deputies, they call Eva in for her interview, and they call her in, and they put the skull on the table. Do you recognize this man? You can only out, that's what they said. Do you recognize her skull? Have you seen this man before? She's like, no. They have it on the table to intimidate her or just, you know, what do you see here and everything?
So yeah, apparently that happened. She walks in, does not give an inch. No. She sits there going, no, what a nice skull. Oh, I love that skull. Great. Don't know. Don't know anything about it. No idea. Have you killed Mattis? No. No. Have you found his body? Oh, that's awful. Terrible, terrible, shame. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. Yeah. She tells the police as they're saying, well, you must be responsible for Mattis. She says, I didn't do it. But she says, if I had killed him, I'd have buried him deep enough so he wouldn't have been found. Oh, there we go. Yeah, that's a good line. Because it's a shallow grave. Yeah. Took a tent peg to go in. Exactly. If I did, I would have done a better job on this. Well, exactly. You kind of get the impression that the body was there just sort of dusted over with a bit of, this guy went, I know. I'll put a tent. Shit, that's a body. What's the chickens? Chicken. Well, the chickens killed him and treated him. Chicken's killed him. Picked out a very shallow grave. Oh. Very nice. Picked out a shallow grave. You can't trust chickens.
Yeah. Well, he has been slaughtering them. What exactly? And I can't imagine he treated them well. No, no, no. He wouldn't care what he. Yeah. Chickens remember the chickens. I like that for them. Oh. Yeah. Now, the sheriff is annoyed that the spooky skull hasn't scared him. I don't know if he's walking around going, ooh. I'm the ghost of Athens. You can't be. Doing whole scenes from Hamlet. And they're like, at the sheriff, you can't act. We lost you not to do this. Put the sheet away. But even though she has not confessed to anything, they'll go, well, fuck you. We're still going to charge you. Yeah. Because they go, well, well, it's circumstantial evidence, but it's the best we've got. Yeah. And also we don't think anyone else was involved in this. Yeah. I haven't got any other ideas. And they're kind of dead right. Because they're like, let's charge her with murder. Or she'd probably go, yeah, I get it. I'm not admitting to anything, but I get it. The case is tricky, because obviously it's circumstantial evidence. It's brought to trial. And this is where Eva changes her story. No. And she shares more.
Okay. And her name, insisting that she was not involved, she says that it was the young man who was with her jack, this jack figure who had killed Mathis. She shares the details of that Mathis, yeah, was a horrible boss, horrible man, to everyone who worked on the ranch, to everyone. It went beyond with him and her, him just being a skin flint and contancorous. She claimed that she had also been servicing him in other ways. Okay. And that he had decided that he could profit from her skills as a sex worker, so that he had started to invite men back and that she, she charged a fee. It's kind of this muddy area of where she was just like, look, I'm going to do my sex work here, but him demanding a cut. Yeah, him taking a cut. She charged up in like three dollars and he took about 50 cents of that. He wanted a cut of that. So whether it's not implied that this was a complete manipulation
by him, but that he wanted in on the money and she was just getting very annoyed at him. But not a nice man, obviously, not like, you know, being completely manipulative. So she shares this and she shares all the stories about him complaining about the food and about everything and would make up all this stuff, but she hadn't killed it. She said that Jack was a young fellow who'd been hired to work on the ranch, but he had gotten into a row with the old man and it was apparently that Mathis took, got really annoyed at Jack because he wasn't milking a cow properly. But he hired, he was the first time on the ranch who might be obviously inexperienced. And Mathis was yelling at him saying, if you can't milk a cow, what the hell are you good for and hit him? Struck the boy. And the young man, furious, gets up and wax Mathis. Yeah, wax the mark. And the old man went down and didn't get up. So one of those sudden punches, you know, young, strong man knocks him on the head,
hits him on the temple, whatever. Jack ran to Eva, according to her story, told him what happened. She ran out, tried to revive the old man, pulled out his false teeth. That was a little bit of a detail. But they tried to revive him, but he was dead. And they end up sort of arguing back and forth and Eva said, oh, I want to get the authorities and Jack, no, no, no, you need to help me hide the body. They end up burying the body on the edge of the property and then sold what they could before running away. Where was this Jack? No one had a trace of him. Yeah, plausible. plausible. It's a good story. Is this a good story? Yeah. It's a good story. No one has seen Jack. Now there were, when it's reported, there was someone on this farm. Well, yeah. There's people who've seen him. So people, they know he does exist. Yes. Maybe it's just there's this guy that she'd had to help fill up the car. Was he there? Were they in on it? Who knows? But no one is ever able to find Jack. He may as well not exist. Yeah. There was a whole substory.
And I didn't include it in here because it felt so far fetched. Where there was a man in, I think it was California County. He was absolutely Lord Lucan. There was a guy who was a child killer. Like he'd been convicted of killing a child. And he bore a striking resemblance to the description of Jack. Right. Where the authorities brought a picture of him to Eva. And she was like, yeah, that could be him. That could be it. Like they were trying in the same way that this person has to be Jack the Ripper. And they're trying to find this Jack character. But no one was willing to pursue that because they were like, we need to get him on this horrific crime he's committed here. We don't want to involve him in this case. So we're just leaving this be. It was a really weird side, but I didn't really buy it. It felt like anyone was trying to link the two together. Grim also didn't really want to go into that story. Yeah. Yeah. So there's no sign of him. So that tactic doesn't work with the jury in this case because they're like, well, where's Jack? Okay, you can't find him. It's a prosecution going lovely story. Eva killed him with an axe in the head.
She ran out. Beth is with an axe. Look, an axed him to the ground. Right. Yeah, but that'll also do it. Killed him buried him. Had someone help her bury him. But yeah, she definitely bashed his brains in. And everyone goes, yeah, we get it. Yeah, okay. And that sounds like a much more plausible thing to do. And then she does sell what she can to get a profit from it. She is convicted of murder. Yeah. She is sentenced to hang. On hearing her verdict, Eva told the jurors, I'll die with my boots on. And in full health. And that's more than most of you old coots will be able to boast of. Nice. So she was proud and she was strong. And in jail, Eva flourished. She flourished. She clearly decided she was going to go. She was going to do it in style. She was going to do it on her terms. She was known as cheerful Eva. Nice. In the jail. And this is great. So she knows she's going to make money to get the best funeral. And the best sort of, you know, the best burial. So she gives interview to any press for a dollar each.
So she charges them a dollar. Well, go come on in. And I'll tell you everything. And it bellishes whatever story she likes on that one for a dollar a piece. She starts making embroidered handkerchiefs that she can sell to sell the execution. People who want a souvenir from a killer. And this is where the press reports come out. Five husbands. Where did they go? Is she a serial killer? Is she a serial killer? Souvenir from the serial killer? That will raise money for her coffin. Yeah. Because she doesn't want any of boxed and a coffin. She wants a good one. Yeah. She is very happy. And she makes herself a silk beaded jazz dress for her execution. Nice. Yeah. Absolutely. She does a lot of beating work for others, but she made this beautiful jazz dress. She wouldn't wear it in the end because she was worried it would get my stop on the day. She kind of was like, oh, I don't want to ruin it. Yeah. I don't want to ruin it. But she made this jazz dress for herself covered in sequence. Covered in sequence. There were appeals against her convictions. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful. Someone tried to suggest it maybe insanity. And they were like, this woman is completely.
She is very, very skilled in many ways. She was due to hang on the 21st of February in 1930 in the Florence State Prison, Arizona. In the hours before her death, the 52 year old woman maintained composure. She was hanging out with the guards and the inmates. She prepared her own last meal of an oyster stew. She had an oyster stew. She played cards with fellow roommates and she enjoyed some orangeade. Nice. So she was just playing cards. There was a rumor that she was going to try and take her own life before the gallows. The warden searched her cell. And they did find apparently a two ounce bottle of poison and several razor blades hidden in her mattress. But she never used them. They were taken. Okay, fine. But she was happy and jolly and all good. And on the morning of her execution, 5am, she was taken to the gallows. Apparently, she kissed two of the guards who left her at the door of the... of the execution house. And she said, I love everyone connected with the prison.
You have all been good to me and I can't blame you for what the law is going to do to me. She was composed as she walked up the steps and she told the guards, don't hold my arms too tight. The people will think I'm afraid. There were gathered spectators there. The warden apparently came to her and before the hood was on, put on. They said, do you have any last words? She declined. And the warden clashed her hands and said, God bless you, Eva. And she smiled and said, goodbye, daddy right. She would call all men daddy, bit weird. But she did. The hood was placed overhead. The news ran to neck. At 5.11am, the trap door was sprung. And her head flew off. Yep. No, I should not laugh at that. I saw when you mentioned this one. I sort of guessed that's when we were going with this one. It's one of those cases where she was completely decapitated. I mean, such composure. Such composure. And I'm going out on my terms. And the hangman's got the length wrong and your fucking head comes off.
Exactly. Everyone's like, what a noble honorable woman. A long, too long. Because of her weight, her head flies off, rolls into the crowds. And obviously her heart's still going. So blood is just spurting out of her neck as the body collapses to the ground. We thank God she did wear the sequins. That dress would have been ruined. That's the first thought when I read that. And I thought that's not a good thought to have. And I was like, no, you were down right there to wear that dress. You knew something was going to happen. Five people passed out watching this surprise. And it's noted that five people passed out two of them were women. So three guys passed out. Three guys passed out. Three guys passed out. Two of them were women. Two of them were women. Yeah, yeah. The others were definitely men. Yeah, so just this last image of her head being popped off. And I did look into my original thought with this episode. But then this ended up being a full story. It was looking at boxed executions.
I think we've had one before with her head coming off. There's been some others. We've had to be like, strangulations and things. Which are grim and awful. But yeah, it happens. It can just literally the head is ripped off. And so everyone's standing there going, weeping the arms, blood on their faces. Okay, perhaps unsurprisingly, she was the first and only woman hanged by the state in Arizona. Certainly by the hangman anyway. Well, she was apparently the first only woman executed by the state of Arizona. And people sort of make the conclusions going, but a few years later, the gas chamber, much worse. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, it's not going to come off. But you're also going to be sitting there holding your breath as long as your boss will be fucking can. You know, gas chamber. Not nice. But also the three other men were hanged before the gas chamber came in going. And it only took three more hanging. Yeah. I mean, your head comes off. It's quick. But yeah, she wouldn't suffer. Yeah, exactly. You're not going to, yeah, you're not going to be choking and strangling and stuff like that. It's over and done with.
Sorry, I just had this thought there. Your head comes off the chickens at the back going, why isn't she running around? Sorry. Sorry. Sorry. But yes. Anyway, from findagrave.com, some accounts on there, which is a great resource, in the small prison plot behind the browning grey, concrete walls of the penitentiary, Miss Dougan's body was buried in a scant ceremony at three o'clock in the afternoon, announced by the warden. But she will have a better coffin than those provided by the state of Arizona for hang murderers for her sale of beadwork. A little separate plot for her head. Yeah, she had much more of a elaborate casket. Yeah. She had a really fine casket because she earned money. And apparently a lot of her visitors as well paid towards it as well. That's what we've got in here. Yes. That is a story. That's a dramatic end. Exactly. Of Eva Dougan. I mean, I read the end. That's the thing that she's most known for for her head flying off. And there's another woman. And it may be a,
I think I might do it on Patreon next week. If we're in the mood for more heads flying off of execution. Where are we not? Where do we not? But yeah, it happens. But then the stories behind them. Sometimes they're just bleed. Yeah. Because I found a few and it was just like this person killed someone who was horrible to them. Oh, Jesus Christ. But there's another one. I think it's Elizabeth Not or Elizabeth Not or something. Where it's crazy, crazy but short story. Yeah. And yeah, she did not fare too well. She did not fare too well. Yeah. But there we go. Flying off heads. So, weird story. I mean, good, good. Yeah. I mean, she lived life like she fucking wanted. She went for it. Yes. She did. Yeah. I mean, a hard life. But yeah, she made the most of it. Exactly. And we're not at all sad that a man died. I mean, he does not seem like the most pleasant of men. No. Absolutely. I kind of feel good for her. Yeah. I don't know what happened to her husband in the past. True. But we don't know. Well, exactly. We don't know. So. Yeah. Yeah. It's quite good. Yeah. But they all went off and all had a lot of time.
Yeah. It's actually been rushed in the sky. The other guy is burning in hell. I think I'm hoping that a few people, one of them they found out he was dead. We're going, yeah. Yeah. There you go. Well, what do you think people? What do you think of the story? I have Eva Duggan and her murderous ways, her crazy past, the little bits that we know of her and the awful, awful Andrew Matthias, Matthias, Matthias, whatever you want to call it. That's also different ways. Clearly. That was so. What do you think of the old chicken rancher and his awfulness and, yes, and the murder trial and the way she died? I mean, you may want to weigh in with that if you want to, you're not going to forget it if you witness that. Exactly. Are there more stories of botched executions that we should be talking about if you want the gory details? Fun ones. We can find them. Well, we'd have to laugh at them a bit. Yeah. Let's hope that they were all awful murderers. Yes. Or just terrible people, or people who made bad cocktails. Tell us what you think.
Jump on the comments of this episode. You're thoughts, you're feelings, you're musings, but most importantly do mix up the hangman's news. Yeah. I really enjoy that. I mean, you haven't got where you were talking a lot. I've been talking a lot. I've been talking a lot. I've been drinking. You have just been coughing every time. And every time. So, yeah, absolutely. So, yeah, definitely mix what up if you can. It's, yeah, exciting, tricky, heavy nutty, floral beanie, never explain it to a friend. It is lovely. Yeah. It's a good, spirit-forward twist on something like a red hood. Yeah. Something to enjoy. Do tell us what cocktails you are enjoying, wherever you are in the world. Welcome to Giggly Squad, a place where we make fun of everything the most important for ourselves. I'm Paige Disorbo. I'm Hannah Berner. Welcome to the squad. Giggly Squad started on summer house when we were giggling during inappropriate time. But of course, we can't be managed. So we decided to start this podcast to continue Giggly. We will make fun of pop culture news.
We're watching fashion trends, haptalks where we give advice, mental health moments, and games and guests. Listen to Giggly Squad on Acast or wherever you get your podcasts.
