Today I'm going to give you two meanings for the phrasal verb to fool around. F-O-O-L, fool around. Well, to fool around has two very common meanings in American English. One meaning is a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, kissing, hugging. That can be called fooling around. So if a boy, you know, a young boy, 17 years old, brings his girlfriend over to his house. The dad or the mom will probably say, no fooling around.

2:06No fooling around. And that means no hugging, no kissing. That's the idea. But the other very common meaning of two fool around means to play. That's the idea. And for me, when I use the verb to fool around, it's usually regarding the kitchen or fishing or on my bike or on the computer. Yeah, I like to fool around in the kitchen. I like to cook things, make things, organize things. I like to fool around on the computer. I like watching YouTube videos and watching my interesting Twitter, the people that I follow on Twitter. I like checking out the news, the latest news, fooling around, not doing anything too serious. Kind of playing. But when we say playing, we think of children or maybe some games.

3:08But I don't really play games on the computer. But I fool around. Nothing too serious. It's how I relax. Now, a lot of guys, they like to fool around in their garage. In their garage, they have many tools. Maybe they fix their car or they create, I don't know, electronic things. Or maybe they're cutting wood and making something out of wood. This can also be fooling around. Let's check out a dialogue. I like fooling around in the kitchen. With your girlfriend. No, when I cook, I like to create different things. So you're a creative cook, huh? Yes, true. Fooling around in the kitchen with your girlfriend or your wife. That's dirty. Yeah, don't do that in the kitchen. But fooling around in the kitchen with different foods, different ingredients, creating different foods.

4:15That's fun. I like it. Yeah. You know, I think if I were young again, I'm not. I would probably be interested in chemistry. I could become a chemist because I like to mix different things together to see what I can create. But in the kitchen, it's safe. Fooling around in the kitchen, creating new different foods. Having fun in the kitchen, fooling around on the computer, going to Twitter, going to Reddit, going to YouTube, going to the news sites, checking out the information, just watching things, entertainment, and playing. That's the idea of fooling around. Do you fool around? Everybody does. Even the really serious people. They need a chance to fool around too. Everybody needs that mental break to just do something silly.

5:17Do something pointless. Do something relaxing. To have fun doing something. Even my dad, my dad is always serious. But I think for my dad, fooling around for him would be a fishing and hunting. Yeah. He doesn't have to catch a fish. He doesn't have to find an animal, you know, get an animal. He just likes being out there, messing around, walking around, looking at nature, enjoying the water. Fooling around. It's a great phrasal verb.
