All right listeners, today's story has some big highs and lows.
0:56
It involves a man named Peter who was one of Jesus' close friends.
1:04
We just celebrated Easter and Peter was there when it all happened.
1:10
We're going to rewind and walk through Peter's experience from before Jesus died to after
1:21
I want you to pay attention and listen for how Peter changes and remember this.
1:28
No matter what we've done, when we come back to Jesus, he welcomes us with open arms.
1:38
Let's begin our story here.
1:46
The room was quiet, lit only by the soft glow of oil lamps, shadows danced along the
1:55
walls as the small group of friends gathered around Jesus.
2:02
Their bellies were full from supper, but their hearts felt a little heavy.
2:10
Something about tonight felt different.
2:14
He was the way Jesus looked at them, calm, but serious.
2:22
Jesus turned to Peter and said, Simon, Simon.
2:29
Jesus said, speaking Peter's other name.
2:34
Behold, Satan has demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat.
2:41
But I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail.
2:47
And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.
2:52
Peter said to him, Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.
2:59
But Jesus said, Peter, before the rooster crows tonight, you will say you don't know me.
3:08
And you'll say this three times.
3:14
The friends looked at each other, unsure of what was coming next.
3:21
But Jesus knew, and still he loved them deeply.
3:28
See, Jesus is warning them, he's explaining that Satan is seeking to shake them all, test
3:38
As farmers do to wheat, but what does Jesus say he will do to protect them?
3:55
Okay, let's continue and see what happens next.
4:02
Peter had just come from the garden.
4:07
Listeners, that's the garden of Gethsemane, that we just heard about on the Easter episodes.
4:15
He had been with Jesus among the quiet olive trees, where everything had started to go wrong.
4:25
Or at least, that's what they thought.
4:29
Soldiers came with torches and swords.
4:32
Peter watched as Judas gave the signal, showing who Jesus was.
4:38
And suddenly, the soldiers arrested Jesus.
4:42
The friends who said they would stay close, had scattered into the night, their sandals
4:51
slapping against the dirt path as they ran.
4:56
But Peter didn't run far.
5:01
Now he was following behind at a distance.
5:05
He didn't want to be seen, but he couldn't just leave Jesus either.
5:12
His heart pounded with every step.
5:15
The guards led Jesus to the high priest's house, where important men would decide what to
5:26
Outside in the courtyard, people had lit a fire.
5:31
It crackled in the cold night air, and a few folks huddled around it, rubbing their
5:40
Peter quietly sat near them, trying to blend in.
5:47
The flames flickered, lighting up his face, just enough for someone to recognize him.
5:56
A servant girl tilted her head, squinting in the fire light.
6:02
Hey, I've seen him before.
6:06
Peter's eyes grew wide.
6:10
What would happen if they knew?
6:13
Peter shook his head.
6:17
Peter looked down at the ground, hoping she would just drop it.
6:23
A little while later, someone else looked at him closely.
6:28
You were a dim, aren't you?
6:34
Peter firmly replied.
6:39
The fire popped, and voices mumbled around him.
6:44
Peter's hands were still cold.
6:47
But now, it wasn't from the air.
6:50
And it was fear creeping in.
6:54
About an hour later, someone else spoke up, looking directly at Peter.
7:01
I know for sure this man was with Jesus, why you can tell, he's from Galilee.
7:09
Man, I don't know what you're talking about.
7:12
And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
7:20
The sound broke through the night air, loud, clear, awful.
7:38
Jesus had said it would happen.
7:42
And across the courtyard, Jesus turned and looked at him.
7:48
Peter met his eyes, not angry, not surprised, just knowing.
7:59
Peter stood up quickly.
8:01
He couldn't stay there.
8:03
He ran out through the gate, tears streaming down his face.
8:11
He told Jesus he would never leave him.
8:14
Well, he said he would die for him.
8:17
But now, he had said three times that he didn't even know him.
8:24
And the rooster had crowed.
8:28
Well, after this, Jesus went to the cross, died, and was buried.
8:39
But on the third day, tell me what happened.
8:46
And let's see what happens with Peter after this, as we continued.
8:55
It had been days since Jesus died on the cross.
9:00
Peter had seen it all.
9:02
The sky had turned dark.
9:05
The earth had shaken.
9:07
And Peter remembered the rooster.
9:11
And denial, the tears.
9:18
His heart felt heavy with sadness, but then, oh, something amazing happened.
9:26
Jesus didn't stay in the tomb.
9:30
He really did what he said he would do.
9:34
He had risen from the dead.
9:37
And Peter saw him alive.
9:41
He touched his hands.
9:43
He even saw the scars.
10:01
One morning, Peter and some of the other disciples were outfishing on the sea.
10:08
They had fished all night and caught nothing.
10:13
Then, a man standing on the shore called out to them.
10:20
Throw your net on the other side of the boat.
10:26
And suddenly, the net was full of fish.
10:30
So many, they could barely pull it in.
10:35
John looked at Peter and said, it's the Lord.
10:43
Peter's heart leapt.
10:48
Without waiting another second, Peter jumped into the water and swam to shore.
10:58
When Peter got to the beach, there was a warm fire waiting and breakfast.
11:05
Fish and bread, Jesus had made it for them.
11:11
After they ate, Jesus turned to Peter.
11:16
There were no crowds, just the sound of the sea, the fire crackling, and the gentle voice
11:28
Peter, do you love me more than these?
11:34
Peter looked down, then back up.
11:38
Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.
11:44
Then feed my lambs.
11:50
Then Jesus asked again, Peter, do you love me?
11:57
Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.
12:01
And take care of my sheep.
12:09
Peter, do you love me?
12:15
Peter's eyes filled with tears.
12:18
Jesus had asked him three times.
12:22
Just like Peter had said three times, he didn't know him.
12:28
Now Jesus was getting Peter the chance to say three times that he loved him.
12:36
Peter didn't hold back.
12:40
Lord, you know everything.
12:42
You know that I love you.
12:48
Then feed my sheep.
12:52
Well, that is it for our story today.
13:00
But before we go, let's think about what we just heard.
13:06
How many times did Peter say he didn't know Jesus?
13:14
And after Jesus had risen, how many times did he ask Peter if he loved him?
13:21
Say, yes, good job.
13:26
Jesus forgave Peter.
13:29
He didn't say, oh, you messed up, go away.
13:34
No, he said, I still want you, I still love you, and we'll use you to go out and spread
13:43
the good news about me to others.
13:48
Peter had messed up, but Jesus gave him a new start.
13:54
Peter was different after that.
13:57
Before Jesus died and rose again, did Peter run away?
14:05
Yes, remember he did and he kind of followed at a distance, trying to see what was going
14:15
And after Peter saw Jesus alive, everything changed.
14:20
Peter became bold and brave.
14:23
So brave that later in his life, he even died for his faith in Jesus.
14:33
If you ever think that you made too big of a mistake, I hope that you remember Peter.
14:42
No matter how far we've run, Jesus, he still loves us.
14:49
When we ask him to forgive us, guess what?
14:57
And just like Peter, he welcomes us back and gives us a fresh start.
15:06
Well, that is it for today's story.
15:09
Thanks to today's Special Voice Guest, Andrew Cahulis, who played the voice of Peter.
15:13
He's a great dad to three little kids and a really talented musician.
