More than 700 people registered, and 400 showed up in person. The event aimed to fill openings in teaching, student support, operations, and other areas. School districts across North Carolina face ongoing staffing shortages. State data shows more than 4,600 classrooms lacked a qualified teacher at the start of fall, 2025. That number climbed to over 6,700 by the 40th day of school. One standout story came from Milton Jordan, a former student now licensed as an assistant vice principal. He wants to return home to Durham and contribute his experiences to the district. His enthusiasm highlights the personal drive behind many applicants. Superintendent Anthony Lewis pointed to fewer people entering education and less value placed on teachers as key issues hurting students. Meanwhile, talent acquisition leader Michelle Hayes stressed that beyond credentials, the real fit comes down to loving kids and showing up every day.
