Duke Student Faces Disciplinary Probe Over Immigration Protest

0:00Durham's story is making news on March 16th. A Duke University, Jr. is facing a disciplinary investigation over her arrest at an immigration protest in Miami. The 21-year-old student, a Miami native named Artivista Carlin, was among more than 30 people detained in November for blocking the entrance to the Chrome detention center. She joined the action as a photojournalist documenting the event, which temporarily halted operations at the facility. Florida authorities charged her with unlawful assembly, obstructing a highway and resisting an officer, but those charges are set to drop this summer. Through a pre-trial diversion program, Carlin is active in student organizing at Duke, where she leads monthly protests, calling for the school to resist immigration and customs enforcement, and raise its minimum wage. Her off-campus arrest has now drawn scrutiny back to campus life. In late February, Duke's Dean of Students' Office notified her of the probe, citing potential violations of policies on disruption, interference, and disorderly conduct.
